like most locals, i typically only go to faneuil hall when i have family in town and we're doing the touristiki stuff. Even though its a mad house, my favorite part is all the food in Quincy market. This weekend i noticed a new kiosk: mmMac & Cheese. my first impulse "oh hell yeah!" was quickly brought down by sticker shock. $8 for a small, classic?? them's tourist prices. The owner read my dismay and called us over. "Do you live in boston?" he asked. yes.... well you get a discount. (he's trying to develop a base of local devotees, not just one-visit tourists.) ok, i'll bite.
i'm a student of Mac & Cheese. i worship, adore, and study it. This stuff was good. really, really good. Its creamy mac, not baked mac. They've got a saute station set up. You order your style (classic, italian, meaty, etc.) and they throw the ingredients in a pan and make your sauce right there. Then they add the pasta and pack it up for you.
it turns out that a "small" is quite a big portion, it served two of us for lunch. So with the local "VIP" discount, it cost less than $7 for two huge portions of delicious, creamy mac & cheese.
i might actually go to Faneuil again just to eat there.....
