What Will It Take to Bring Diners Back to Dallas’s West End? | Eater Dallas

"A barbecue spot built around family recipes and named for the owner’s wife’s family, positioned to appeal both to barbecue-loving locals and to tourists seeking an ‘authentic’ Texas barbecue experience. Located about a mile and a half from a famously busy rival, it intentionally differentiates itself on home-style recipes and family roots." - Diana Spechler

We were a trio from Tyler, Texas, that came up to do a lunch after taking Amtrak. We decided on this place because of its close proximity to the train station and the west end Dart stop. I called ahead as I had a member in our party that required wheelchair access to the facility. They let us in through the back door ramp kindly so we were seated. The place was empty as we got there right around lunch, but it started to fill in. Everything was clean and on point. The staff was very attentive. Everything was nicely presented from the condiments and sauces that were sitting out the drink fountain everything was clean, fresh, and they aimed to please and did! We cleaned our plates of half chicken and fried okra jalapeño bread on the sausage sandwich was what we thought homemade or definitely locally baked. The rib sandwich was also good. The onion rings which I thought would be more housemade but they were good. I just wanted a little more crispier batter. All in all, we had a great experience, and we all three agreed that we would return.

As far as Texas BBQ goes, this place is not it. The brisket was moist but very fatty and bland. The jalapeno sausage was very good. Turkey was bland. The mashed potatoes were bland, no gravy, nothing. Literally just a mashed potato. Cornbread was cake, not actual cornbread. The Mac n cheese was very good but it would've tasted a lot better if I didn't have to go up to the counter near the end of my meal and ask for it, and they didn't believe that I paid for it so I had to wait for them to look up my ticket and verify that I did indeed, pay for an extra side. Much better BBQ in the Dallas area that I would go to before I came back here.

Dallas, Texas little kept secret, tastiest BBQ in the heart of downtown Dallas! Great ambience to play darts and billiards, and please ask for the specials! Don’t forget it plays the heartiest country songs you’ll just come here to sing along I reckon!!!

Save yourself the headache of Dallas Convention Center food that is overpriced, underwhelming, and requires waiting in long lines. Jump on the red or blue DART rail to get dropped off at the front door is this BBQ gem instead! We came on a Saturday during FanExpo at the convention center, and it was such a good call! We made great time (between sessions) and left full and satisfied. It was so so good!!

Google
Excellent food. Son rated Mac-n-cheese a 7-8, and that’s a good rating for him. 2-plate meals are only enough for one person.

Google
First, it may not be the fanciest place, but def is one of those where you can prob try every single dish and be happy you did. You get both Quantity and quality at a great price. It is one of those best bang for your buck in town. The orders came out quick and The service was amazing. I will def comeback and recommend it to friends and family.

I had a bit of a layover in Dallas and decided to head over to Dealey plaza. After walking around for a little bit, I wanted a bite to eat and this place was conveniently located. It was good! The brisket was the most tender meat! Alejandro was a friendly host/server. I left a very happy and full customer.

Yelp
Leaving this place now and might not make it home before puking. This BBQ is so incredibly VILE! Where do I start? I have never seen such disgusting ribs in my life. We got a pound of beef ribs that came in one massive, hard block that was impossible to cut or bite into. The inside was dry and charred, and the outside was just globs of sauce and peppercorn. We ended up trying to take one bite without breaking a tooth, and then gave up on the entire pound. It all went in the garbage. Okra was terrible...really don't know how you manage to screw up fried okra. Cornbread was inedible. Threw that away, too. The brisket...probably the only semi decent thing on the plate. Still was just a large piece of fat with too much peppercorn, but at least it was edible. The bbq chicken. Another failure. Threw a half pound in the trash. Really don't understand the good reviews. This was by far the worst bbq we've ever had in Texas. I hate leaving a business such a bad review, but $100 spent to throw 95% of the food away deserves it.

Yelp
We walked here after being at Dealy Plaza museum and Holocast museum. I ordered a brisket sandwich combo. The brisket was overly seasoned with black pepper, thick sliced and very fatty. I needed to trim off a lot of fat. It should have been rendered longer. I didn't eat the bun and had some of the homemade potato chips. Prices were high for a side $7.95 for basic French fries. They have sweet tea, which was good. Although I love barbecue and brisket, 2 days in a row is too much. Review 10 in 2025.

Yelp
This is a nice looking place they've slapped a new coat of paint on what was a Sonny Bryan's previously. The location is inside a very cool historical building. You can really appreciate the hardwood floors and the large wooden pillars around. The staff was very welcoming. I went on a Thursday 8/22/2024 I believe their second day of soft opening. After ordering, I asked about the restroom, and i was led by the cashier to the nearby elevator in the hallway of the building where you have to go down a level. The restrooms weren't very clean. Price per portion was pretty good for downtown. The brisket itself wasn't anything to write home about. The sauce, while nice and warm and sweet, just gave me bottled vibes. My texas torpedo order only came with 3 jalapeños vs. 4, the online menu said. The flavor of the texas torpedo was great. My only issue is some inconsistency in the heat levels. Overall, it's a nice addition to the west end that was missing something after Sonny Bryan's left. This was the first week of their soft opening, so only time will tell if they will fill the void left by SB's. In a state and city that prides itself on BBQ, you can't just be mediocre P.s. bbq is relative from Texas to Memphis to Carolina and Kansas City. Stop in to Moak's and give it a try to see if you like it.

Yelp
Having lived in Dallas for 4 years and eaten at multiple BBQ restaurants, Moak's Family Texas BBQ is one of the best when it comes to food quality. The brisket is a highlight--juicy, well-seasoned, and infused with a deep, smoky flavor. The turkey is tender and delicately flavored, offering a lighter option that's still satisfying. The sides are well-executed, particularly the cream of corn, which is rich and smooth with the hint of cinnamon, and the banana pudding, which provides a classic, creamy finish to the meal. One of the more unique dishes is the jalapeños wrapped in bacon, offering a perfect blend of spice and savory goodness.

Yelp
If you're looking for dry, cold brisket and cold queso then this place is for you. The owner should be embarrassed they serve food like this.

Yelp
Cozy place with large portions. The barbecue was savoury and smoky, the sauces were sweet.

Yelp
Food was great! Texas doesn't disappoint. The portions were just right....everything had a great taste and flavor.

Yelp
Front cashier lady was a bit rude. Brisket was really fatty, no drink menu offered, they were sold out of items during dinner time.

Yelp
From the moment my family entered the restaurant we knew this place was a mistake, but we endeavored to sit and eat regardless. The employee at the front was unprofessional and seemed uninterested is being courteous. We were handed three menus and instructed to find our seats and come order when we are ready. When we asked for the combination to use the bathroom, we were told that there would be a code on our receipt. At this point I was ready to leave but we stayed in hopes that the food would make up for the poor service. Unfortunately, it did not. From one dish of a baked potato being cold and the side dish of macaroni n cheese being solid from how long it must have been sitting out. The meat tasted spoiled. My family decided to stand up and leave but not before insisting that we were refunded for the inedible dishes that were provided. I would NEVER go back. Especially when there are several other options within 5 mins.

Yelp
We ordered a tritip sandwich which was mostly fat. The lady up front was kinda rude needed better customer service

Yelp
Excellent food, fast and friendly service! Meat was very good, sides were excellent! Would make a point to stop by again next time i'm in town.

Yelp
Good BBQ...service not so good, actually no service. You order food, pay (w/ tip request), go get food when your number is called...self serve. Plastic knives & forks don't work well w/ BBQ. Prices are too high for do it your self...all sides are $8. Chicken, brisket & a side (no drink + tip) was $40
