Mộc Mạc - Review - East Village - New York - The Infatuation

"Mộc Mạc is a Vietnamese restaurant in the East Village serving things like Vietnamese-style hot pot loaded with shrimp and pork belly, and oxtail and shank phở. Everything on the menu is under $30, except that hot pot, which is made to share." - Willa Moore

Moc Mac is absolutely phenomenal. Def one of the most exciting new Vietnamese restaurants I’ve experienced recently. The moment you walk in, you’re struck by how warm and thoughtfully designed the space is which makes it feel both contemporary and deeply comforting. We started with the Basil Clams which were fragrant, light and very flavorful. The Chili Shrimp Salt Wings were perfectly crunchy and dusted with a sweet, spicy, and umami seasoning. The Beef Salad was one of my favorites- Great mix of flavorful beef, herbs, roasted peanuts, crispy shallots and a fermented anchovy sauce (which was new to me but a great complement). We got the Lemongrass Kumquat Tofu and Tofu and Mushrooms dishes for some vegetarian options and they proved just as amazing with lots of layers of texture and flavor. The Quang Nam Golden Noodle and Betel Leaf Wagyu (which we got extra orders of) were my favorites of the dinner. Both were so perfectly balanced which is hard to do with so many competing flavors. I was running out of room in my stomach when the Oxtail & Shank Pho arrived but it was the table’s favorite and we all made room. Amazingly fragrant broth with tender meat. Going to be coming back for that in the winter. The service was exceptional- everyone was genuinely kind and every interaction felt personal. I will be taking everyone I know here….not just because the food is incredible but because it feels so good to be there.

The newest opening of Moc Mac was magical. Every detail— from the decor to the soft music and paintings, told a story of Vietnamese culture and added warmth. The food was authentic and full of flavor, served with care and genuine hospitality. Every dish tasted homemade. I tried the Chicken Wings, Beef Salad, Basil Clam, Passion Fruit Salad, and the Lai Dac Thom (a jasmine green tea with pineapple and lime). My favorites were definitely the salads— they were super fresh, light, and so cleanly made that I left feeling satisfied but not heavy and the tea was a perfect refreshing match! The flavors were bright, refreshing, and perfectly balanced. I cannot wait to come back!!

We enjoyed our dinner at Moc Mac, Viet food is definitely getting more upscale and trendy in NY now. The betel leaf wagyu wraps and beef salad had great flavor and sauces to go with them. Pho noodle textures were just right and soup broth was wonderful. Did not enjoy the clam bowl though, didn’t taste any clams at all and the one flavor was the flavor of the sauce on the side. We were sad they didn’t offer any desserts at all.

We visited during soft-opening, and the experience was actually good. Tastewise, cơm Hến was good, great portion with a variety of veggies, which I really enjoyed. The sauce can be funkier & more flavorful if it is less sweet and retains more fermented flavour. Oxtail Pho presentation looks pretty decent & neat, the broth is northern style, good amount of meat. We really liked the pork jowl with fermented bean curd sauce!! Highly recommend for app:)!!

Google
soooo yummy and tasty. we got all these three dishes for two people and it was way too much !! I didn’t like the hot pot that much bc there were a lot of random things that I personally don’t like .. but the flavor of this and the golden noodles is very good !! the starter we got was also very yummy. we came around 6 pm on a Wednesday, no reservation and thankfully got seated but the restaurant filled up quickly after. I like this place, and would definitely come here again. but not sure if I would die without it (I save my 5 star reviews for such a restaurant)

Google
One of the most authentic Vietnamese spot in NYC. Moc mac doesn’t let me down with how authentic the food tastes, with immaculate quality and creativity. The grill pork marinated (má heo nướng chao) is so authentic, smokey with the best sauce brought a tear to my eyes. As someone who grows up in Vietnam, I haven’t tasted anything close to home but dishes at Moc Mac for years now, hence the reaction and adore. I also highly recommend the cocktail and the hot pot. The cocktail is so smooth; the transition from hong kong milk tea to the alcohol is just amazing. All staff were so nice, friendly and attentive. I can’t wait to come back and try more dishes!

Google
omg the pork jowl appetizer was literally everything!!! we also loved the mì Quảng & cơm Hến, super flavorful and portion were big too. for the drinks, lài đác thơm is a great choice if you want some thing sweet and sour, hồng kong bên hông chợ lớn was quite yummy too tho a tad bit too strong for me. very very sweet people working there!! quite small space so it fills up pretty quickly, highly suggest calling to reserve a table before you come by.

Google
The food was absolutely delicious, and the service was excellent! The betel beef is definitely a must-try — super flavorful. The baby clam bites were also amazing, and the char-grilled pork jowl with okra was perfectly tender. They have a really interesting selection of drinks too. I’ll definitely be back to try more!

Yelp
Came to try this new Vietnamese spot based on a friend's recommendation, and it did not dissapoint! The appetizers were very tasty, anc had some creative flavors relative the typical Vietnamese restaurant. The entrees of pho and clam rice were both delicious and decently portioned. Out of all the food items, my personal favorite was the pork jowl, which had a nice smoky flavor which paired well with the chewy bites. The accompanying sauce was also tasty. We were at the restaurant in the middle of the afternoon, so there were only a few tables at the time. Service was great as they were not too busy then!

Yelp
I ordered takeout from Moc Mac and really enjoyed the meal. The beef pho was delicious the broth was the true standout with a perfect blend of spices and just a hint of heat at the end. The beef was tender as well, though I would recommend adding extra beef if you like a heartier portion. Everything was packed perfectly and arrived in great condition. All I had to do was reheat the broth, which I prefer piping hot. We also ordered banh mi sandwiches and tried their Saigon version. It was solid fresh bread, good flavor, and a satisfying portion size. Overall, a great takeout experience and definitely a spot I'd order from again!

Yelp
Cute little Vietnamese restaurant that just opened up in the East Village. The restaurant literally just opened, so imagine some things are subject to change as this place matures. We had the beef pho and chili shrimp wings. The beef pho was solid, the meat quality was good and the broth is above average for New York (though I wouldn't necessarily rave about it). The wings were fairly standard, but feature a type of umami-style seasoning that I enjoyed. As a heads up, they do have a lunch menu with banh mi, though for some reason they didn't really advertise it when we were there. Overall it's solid, and I enjoyed the meal we had, would come back.

Yelp
I had a delivery order from this fine Vietnamese restaurant I ordered Basil Clams, Shrimp Summer Rolls, Grilled Tofu Bun, Grilled Chicken Banh Mi and Oxtail & Shank Pho. Everything was delicious. The clams were in a broth that was heavily flavored with lemon grass. Shrimp rolls had 3 fresh large shrimp inside each, vegetables and soft rice noodles with well-made peanut dipping sauce. The banh mi was crunchy and fresh with adequate chicken and vegetables though not much pickled or lemon grass taste. The tofu noodle dish was excellent with well made grilled tofu, vegetables, soft noodles and delicious sauce. The pho was the real highlight of the meal. It's always difficult to do a noodle soup as a delivery order but they did it perfectly. Everything was separated into different containers and lots of side condiments were sent. When combined and warmed up, this was a real treat! Packing was excellent. Delivery was quick. Highly recommended, especially for a pho at home, but also for everything mentioned.

Yelp
The food here was just okay. It's surprising too because when you look at all the pictures, and see all the items on the menu, you'd think this place would be phenomenal just given the rarity of some of the dishes, and the quality and variety of herbs that you don't get in most Vietnamese restaurants in NYC. But the food ended up just being OK. Nothing was all that impressive besides the fact that it's hard to find that particular dish. The hot pot looks delicious but is mostly standard, the betel leaf wrapped beef is normally one of my favorite dishes but it was just so-so, and the beef salad was kind of passable. I can't quite pinpoint why but everything just tastes a little bit off.

Yelp
My friend and I came here for lunch for their soft opening this week. We made a reservation in advance and we were seated right away. The staff was super friendly and nice and there is plenty of seating. The menu isn't huge but there is definitely something for everyone. My friend and I decided to get different dishes to share. -Chili Shrimp Salt Wings: These were pretty good, very crispy and flavorful, it is pretty much two large wings and they cut the flat and then the drumstick on the side. -Betel Leaf Waygu: I saw this highly recommended on Tiktok and was really interested in trying it but it was just okay - it was not as unique as I thought it would be. -Oxtail and Shank Pho: The pho, meat and sauces come separately and then they bring over the soup. There was a decent amount of meat but I felt like the amount of pho was actually pretty little. The broth was pretty good but it did not wow me. I was really excited to try this place but unsure if it is because it was a soft opening and the food was just alright to me. Nothing really stood out to me.

Yelp
Came here for their soft opening this week. Service here was phenomenal. Frequent check ins to ensure we had everyone we needed for our stay. My favorite dish was probably the chicken wings, albeit could use more spice. The steamed little neck clams were a hit and cooked in the most fragrant broth. A third of the clams weren't open though so that's my only complaint. The baby clams were interesting but prefer the little neck clams as it had more flavor. Overall would come back to try their other dishes like the pork jowl.

Yelp
Been wanting to visit this Vietnamese Restaurant located in LES since I heard many good things. Beautiful atmosphere! My family and I dropped by for dinner on a weekday to try their food. Their Ox Pho was delicious and flavorful. My mom had the Mi Quang noodle and she enjoyed it. Their chicken wings were good but enjoyed the Betel Leaf Wagyu more. Service was great and attentive. Price is expected for the area. Would definitely return.

Yelp
Food is amazing, had to fortune of eating there the first week of opening, the appetizers wings were excellent, the pho was out of this world, soup was flavorful, not greasy and had a generous amount of protein to keep me satisfied, the presentation was great, took pics to share with friends, would definitely recommend to all the people in the neighborhood, also service was great from very friendly staffs, left a generous gratuity, the ambiance was beautiful with great art and antiquity collectables by the wall, would definitely be back the next time I am in the area, definitely recommend to anyone who is a fan of Vietnamese cuisine
