By now, I've tried at least half a dozen brands of Mochi Donuts throughout the states...but I must admit, THIS brand takes the prize!
Let's go back. This is actually a Korean-owned business, as is apparent in the Korean letters printed in the boxes. The place itself is very cute, with bright, popping colors...but sadly, horribly air conditioned. I about died while inside!
As is the case with most Mochi Donut shops, they exchanged the flavors of donuts (6 at a time) every day (some places, it's every few days, or weekly). The only flavors that interested me on the day I stopped in was this Matcha and Ube flavors (LOVES!!). Nevertheless, I ordered a half dozen, a full variety...which costed $18, with tax! NOT cheap. I also ordered their Rose Bubble Tea...which turned out to be a real disappointment because the drink itself was brown colored. I mean, where's the pretty pink color? Well, in their version, the rose flavor was just sprinkled on lightly on top. Definitely not the best Rose Tea that I've had! Oh Well.
Now comes the part that redeems all...the lack of A/C, BROWN Rose Tea, semi-boring selection of donuts, etc.etc. I had the Matcha and Ube flavors, and I gave the rest to my husband/son (can't even recall what those other flavors were?). Well, after finishing the Matcha and Ube donuts, all I can say is that they were SUPERB. I've had amazing Mochi Donuts before, but these were like boutique class! For starters, their donuts were SO soft, plump and perfectly formed...something I can't say is the case with all Mochi Donuts. Then the taste? SO delicious...and had this truly incredible, melt-in-your-mouth taste! BTW, for those that haven't tried Mochi Donuts, you don't bite into them like American donuts. I mean, you CAN, but the best way to do it is to pull each individual ball of the donut apart...thus, enjoying each of the 8 mini balls. For me, it's not just the taste, but the FUN of eating these as well.
So I'm a HUGE Mochibee's fan now. I know Mochinuts (a very popular chain that I love...but after this, just not as much?) is coming to Charlotte (my home city), but I can only hope that Mochibee's shop also opens in Charlotte in the near future. Honestly, it's not ethnic bias...in that these donuts are owned by Koreans. It's simply that these looked and tasted better than any Mochi Donuts I've ever had so far. I just can't wait to try them again!
