Ever since the first time I had heard about mochi donuts, I knew immediately I'd love them. Donuts? Great! Mochi? Great! Combined together? Doubly great! Even if there had been any potential of doubt (there wasn't), it was completely wiped away after I tried Hawaii's MoDo's mochi donuts at one of their pop-up events in San Jose. Which makes it all the more ridiculous that it took me so long to finally make my way to Mochill, especially since I had heard nothing but good things about this place!
Sharing a space with Takoyaki Yamochan, Mochill is an undeniably modest operation. That being said, it doesn't seem to limit them in what they're able to put out. Not only do they have a dozen different flavors to offer on any given day, but the flavors are both interesting and varied. Along side classic flavors like Cinnamon Sugar, Chocolate, and Cookies & Cream, you'll also find a mix of Asian flavors, like Matcha, Black Sesame and Kinako, and more unique and seasonal flavors, like Ruby Chocolate, Love Potion, and Earl Grey Strawberry Cake. That said, it's also not everything they have to offer either, as flavors will rotate in and out on a regular basis, so you very well could see something new to try whenever you come here!
-- CHOCOLATE
While the chocolate flavor on this one might have been just okay (it's not bad, just kind of generic), but the texture was perfect! The donut was crisp on the outside and soft and chewy on the inside, unlike others I've had in the past.
-- MATCHA
This was awesome! The texture of the donut itself was just as terrific as the chocolate one, but the frosting was better. Not only did it hold up better after a couple of hours (it didn't get as gooey), but the matcha flavor was a lot stronger.
The other thing that I really liked across all of the donuts I tried was that none of them were all that greasy. Even after sitting for a bit, there weren't any oil stains on the bag and the donut didn't leave my mouth with that coated feeling.
Although Mochill has some of the best mochi donuts I've tried in SF, so far, coming here does require a bit more effort compared to other shops that are closer to me. That being said, that's probably not the worst thing, as if it was easy, I can only imagine how often I'd come here!
FOUR AND A HALF STARS rounded up.
