Best Asian Dessert Shops and Cafes in San Diego | Eater San Diego

"The mochi doughnut craze has found firm footing in San Diego with several locations of this shop that combines mochi with an American-style doughnut, the result is a hybrid pastry that’s both pleasantly chewy and airy. Flavors rotate every Monday and Friday with favorites including the blue Cookie Monster, churro, and funnel cake that comes with a choice of chocolate, strawberry, or caramel drizzle." - Helen I. Google
A quick, simple, easy donut joint with great donuts and drinks. In and out in five minutes with good snacks.

Google
Staff is not super friendly, but the drinks and hot dogs are good. Donuts are overpriced. I still go here regularly for the half and half hot dog, omg it's amazing

I entered this place out of curiosity and I liked its style and originality. Ideal for a snack or as a dessert. There is no place to sit and share in the place. You should definitely eat it in your car, office or home. The girl who attends is very friendly and polite. Ample parking space.

Google
I constantly see this place but looked on social media to see favorite items. I got the half and half Hot Cheetos and the potato mozzarella. I’m disappointed, not sure if people on social media lie, but I did not like this, I would rather get mozzarella cheese sticks instead. The hot dog was decent but it would’ve helped a little more if there was the same amount of cheese and mozzarella wrapped around each other vs on half sides of the stick. Nonetheless I wouldn’t go back.

Google
These were so stale and as if they were left over from the day before or two! Definitely not fresh. We got the Oreo one and it was horrible my daughter didn’t finish after two bites. I tried it too and can say it was stale and def not the quality I’ve experienced before.

Google
Tried it for the first time. I liked the chewy mochi on the chocolate donut and the original rice hotdog, that had an unexpectedly crispy deep fried mochi crust with a juicy hotdog. It was interesting and a nice place to grab a snack.

Google
The customer service was great. As soon as you walk in, a bell rings to alert employees that you are present. The donuts are also very delicious. But they do not have any seating, so you basically take your order and leave. This is not a hangout spot.

My kids absolutely love these mochinuts! The Managers are super friendly & committed to the local North Point Reston community. They generously sponsored the local elementary school Bingo Night with one of the bingo prizes & also donated tons of mochinuts - a HUGE success! The kids & parents alike devoured the delicacies! THANK YOU, Mochinut, North Point, Reston!!!

Yelp
I really enjoyed this Mochinut location. It's actually quite small, but the one staff that was there was really friendly and patient. I think they were by themselves when we came in, and then we heard someone else come in shortly after. I don't remember what milk tea my friend got, but I got the Ube milk tea and it was absolutely delicious. I know my friend also enjoyed her milk tea (I'm sorry I just forgot what it was!). We also ordered a bubble waffle with half strawberries and half oreo toppings. My friend also got herself a hot cheetos original hotdog. She loved the hotdog! We shared the bubble waffle and we both enjoyed it! We loved everything we got! They just have a small storefront where you can wait for your order. They don't have any tables and chairs. There's a small table on one side where you can grab napkins and utensils, but otherwise, there's nowhere to eat them. They also have a small fridge on the opposite wall with bottled and canned drink options if you wanted some. Overall, great experience and the food and drinks we got were tasty! Will definitely be back again.

Yelp
I recently visited Mochinut and was pretty disappointed. The corndogs were just okay, but one of them had burnt potatoes on it. When we walked in, we weren't greeted at all -- the vibe made me feel like we were more of a bother than customers. What was even stranger was that the person who originally took our order (a lady at the front) didn't give us our food. Instead, a random guy who had been sitting in the front suddenly left, went to the back, and came out with our order. While handing it to us, he touched himself inappropriately beforehand, which was very unhygienic and off-putting. Overall, the experience felt unprofessional and unsanitary. I definitely expected better from this location.

Yelp
I've been here a couple times, and the hotdogs are fantastic, but the mochi donuts are just ok, and the boba is garbage. Pearls are overcooked, and as far as the donuts go there are plenty of options in the area for better quality ones. I'll be back for the hotdogs though since they're close to me and there aren't many options in the area. I wouldn't go out of my way for them though. The service is quick though and everyone that works there is super polite! There isn't much to say about the ambiance since there's nowhere to sit, it's pretty much just a counter and small fridge.

Yelp
Loved this place right when it opened! I got the churro, late, and Biscoff! Although all were pretty good, they gave us stomach pains:(

Yelp
Walked in and wasn't greeted. Person at the counter was busy on her phone. I interrupted to ask if I could order and she looked at me but didn't respond. I began to order, "can I please have an Oreo..." but was interrupted by someone who came out of the back and started having a full on conversation with her. I was just standing there mid-sentence. The conversation was a couple minutes long and I debated just walking out. The conversation finally ended and I asked for 4 donuts. She took 2 steps to get them off the rack and asked me again what I wanted. She had forgotten that quickly. Painstakingly slow to box up 4 donuts, ring me out and give me a receipt. I said thank you, but thank you wasn't returned. The donuts were chewy like reviews described. They didn't seem as fresh as I would have preferred, as the icing was a bit hard. It was fun to try something different. Ample parking in north point. Kiosks provide an easy way to order (maybe that's why customer service was negligible?). They have a few types of drinks in a cooler (milk, juice, etc).

Yelp
One of the best mochidonut shop is finally opened in Reston, VA!! In the North Point Village shopping center. I'm giving 4 stars on how everything tasted overall. Definitely 5 stars for their mochidonuts!! 4 stars for their Korean style corndogs. And 3 stars for their boba milk tea. As many people know Mochinut is most well known for their delicious chewy soft sweet mochidonuts! These are tasty, perfect snack, sweet treats and delicious must try desserts! The mochi texture makes this donuts chewy and it stays soft even when it's cooled down. And good for a couple of days! Mochinut also have the popular Korean street food, which are the corndogs!! These are perfect snacks for any time of the day!! My favorite is the crunchy ramen crusted corndogs because it is super crunchy!! And next is the potato with cheese inside. To be honest, all of their corndogs are super crispy crunch flavorful goodness. These Korean corndogs are a must try as well! Last but not least their boba milk teas... as I expected it was sweet and flavorful but nothing too special about it except it comes in a bottle unlike the usual cup you punch a hole in with your jumbo straw. I've had way better brown sugar milk teas, so this was just ok to my standards. Some of the boba pearls were soft and some got hard. But if you are in need of a urgent crave crushed for some boba milk tea in Reston area, give these boba milk teas a try. For me, it's not a must try. Customer service was friendly and welcoming.

Yelp
I'm not a deep fried foods fan but this place was getting so much buzz on the Reston foodies Facebook page I had to stop and check it out. Surprised they sell other foods than just doughnuts. I ordered 3 random mochinuts for the experience: mango, chocolate, and churro. Not surprisingly the churro was really sweet. Surprisingly the mango was also sweet, and the chocolate was the least sweet and also my favorite. There was a line when I stepped in and a line when I left. Not exactly my kind of dessert place but they seem to have a huge fan base. Hopefully they do well!

Yelp
Stale items and the employees didn't greet or say anything to us. Very cold atmosphere and it was reflected in the taste.

Yelp
Tried it second time after I didn't like it first but I don't see my view has changed. I have tried almost half of the mochi donut on the menu. Chocolate, black sugar, matcha, red velvet, pistachio, cookies and crème, strawberry, blueberry, black sesame and couple more. There's not a single one that I would recommend. I didn't like the mochi feel and sugar content on some were too high. I think It's not for me, maybe you'll have a different perspective based on your taste buds so give it a try before ticking it off. Place is decent and abundant parking available. Service is quick and staff is friendly.

Yelp
The Ube Mochinut was delicious. I had no idea what it was, but the person behind the counter recommended it. My wife and I thought it was amazing. I also had a mango green tea with boba that was also great. Something I would get again. Definitely coming back and ordering a half a dozen Mochinuts and another bubble tea.

Yelp
So happy that a mochinut place opened close by! I've walking by this place waiting for it to open up for what seems to have taken over two summers! Went there during their soft opening and got one of each flavor - my faves were the matcha, original and ube at this time. Mochi donuts are known to be more chewy and less sweet in my opinion, which I like better and I prefer the ones where the toppings/icy are not too overwhelming/make my teeth ache from all the sweetness. The fun thing about these places is looking forward and trying all the new flavors! I wonder if they will have seasonal ones for the holidays?! That would be a great incentive to have. Welcome to North Point Village!

Yelp
I've ordered a total of 3 times before. The first 2 times through DoorDash they were amazing, they were soft and fresh and I loved them. The 3rd time I went into the store and got a box of 6 donuts, 5 of which were stale and hard as a brick. I was so disappointed and I'm iffy about whether or not I should try again. I went on a rainy day so I'm sure that maybe it was slow and she just gave me whatever donuts they had already made, which likely had been sitting out. Since the donuts are stored out in the open I'd assume they go stale quicker. Storing them in an enclosed space, im sure would help. The service was great though.

Yelp
Potato mozzarella and mochi donuts were yummy! Hot Cheeto mozzarella was good too just didn't take a pic.

Yelp
Stopped in the late afternoon. The brown sugar milk tea was the best thing we got here. While the hot dog was good, they lacked sauce options and only offered ketchup in single plastic portions. The motchi donuts lacked that motchi consistency that you'd expect. Maybe it was just stale by the time we visited but we were left a bit disappointed.

Yelp
The donuts were amazing I loved them the corn dog was amazing it was an amazing experience. I will definitely go back.

Yelp
The milk tea, donuts, and rice dogs we ordered were incredible and the speed of service was great. My only wish was that there was some sort of seating area because we wanted to dig into everything as soon as our orders were ready.

Yelp
This place is great. Im making this review partly as I have to note that every time I've gone, at least one older person walks in that's never tried it before and is generally apprehensive because it's not Dunkin' Donuts. Unfortunately, it looks like those same old timers figured out how to download yelp and leave reviews. Ignore the entitled complaints; no, you won't get white-glove service to valet your Honda when you stop in to buy some donuts and milk tea. What you will get is a good product in a timely manner with no frills. If this place was truly 3.5/5 they wouldn't be completely sold out at the end of every day. Any complaints to that point must have a financial stake in a garbage company or have a favorable attitude towards wasting food.

Yelp
Little store for mochi donuts or boba tea on the go. The mochi donuts are crazy good and so are the Korean corn dogs. The boba tea is very tasty as well. Awesome place for a quick Korean snack/dessert.

Bobbie L.

Yelp
Love the mochi take on donuts! Super delicious and unique delicious flavors. I'm obsessed with the soft chewy texture of these donuts. The hot dogs are also delicious. Boba is good, but I go to mochinut for their donuts! 10/10

Yelp
Cute little spot with ample public parking. The specialty corn dogs are delicious. My husband had the Hot Cheetos original corn dog and I had the Ramen corn dog. The Hot Cheetos corn dog is definitely spicy but also delicious. The ramen corn dog is actually more tasty than any other ramen corn dog I have ever had. The service isn't fast but also isn't slow considering the fresh deep fry that occurs to make the corn dogs. I did also order a a Thai tea with boba. This is where my minus 1 star comes in. The tea was delicious however, the teas come packaged in clear plastic "cans" with pop tops. Boba straws are provided, however they don't fit into the pop top. Then, with all the ice in the drinks, the boba doesn't easily come through with your drink. I had to finish my tea, wait for the ice to melt and then consume the boba. Not exactly the best boba experience. Overall, if they can get the boba issue remedied, I would return.

Yelp
I went here with friends and tried the boba. I got the Ube boba for the first time ever and it was a bit too sweet for my taste but I still really enjoyed it. I also really liked that they didn't fill the cup with ice at all, but the drink was still nice and cold. The cup they give it in is also really cool. Next time I'll definitely try one of the donuts. Service was pretty good too, my questions were answered

Yelp
This place is a delicious fixable mess. I hope they fix it. They primarily have three offerings: hot dogs on a stick, mochinut donuts, and boba tea in a can. I really like the fact that the Boba is fully prepared and does not require a long ordering process. They have six flavors. Pick one, get a can and go. Awesome! Round two: Mochinuts - $3 per donut! No kidding, $3 per donut. Even with their buy 10, get two free deal, we're still talking about $30 per dozen. Even with inflation, that's insane! Krispy Kreme box of a dozen donuts is $15. You can get 24 Krispy Kreme donuts or 12 Mochinut. If this store cuts its price sure, they will do fine. If this price remains, they won't be in business in 6 months. I'll restate this Mochinut wants $30 per dozen donuts. INSANITY!!!!!!! Now let's move onto the hot dogs on a stick. $7 per, with all sorts of crazy toppings, potatoes, cereal, ramen, etc. I had the original and the potato dog. They were really good! I enjoyed them. For what they were, the price was reasonable. BUT, there's a big problem with the dogs. They are a mess. They will get on your clothes or your car. So you would think, no big deal, I'll just sit at a table. No you won't. There are no tables or chairs. There is no place to sit. The store is too small. There are two benches outside, but that's only good for March - October. The packaging provided with the dogs is just a paper tray. The only way to eat these without making a mess is to take them home or to your office. Unless you don't mind having food crumbs all over your car, you're going to take this to another location. They need some kind of packaging that will contain all the crumbs for when you get to your destination. I really _hate_ a food store that doesn't provide seating, but the food taste was excellent. I hope they get reasonable pricing on the donuts and better packaging for the hot dogs. Last part, on the receipt I was charged a "Support Local Fee". It was small, probably about 3%. The cashier could not explain what it was for and could not remove it from the bill. It's not a tax, that was charged separately. With no other explanation, we can only speculate that it's just more profit for the store. If they need more money, just charge a higher price. But wait, they are already twice as expensive as Krispy Kreme. This "Support Local Fee" amounts to nothing more than fraud. I truly hope they fix these problems. I would like to go back. But these three problems will do the store in if they don't address it.

Yelp
The corn dog was awesome! Crunchy and lightly sweet. We also got the ube Mochinut and it was so chewy! The icing was thick too. Highly recommend the donut. Could use better customer service but I'm okay bc the food came out fast and good.

Cesar D.

Yelp
I thought these things were a fad. And yes they are a fad but man they are so chewy good. I wish they were fresh or warm. A little expensive but it's also not something you get all the time. Would come back in a couple of months.

Tammy B.

Yelp
Delicious! Donuts but different- my son and I loved them. Definitely going back soon!

Kianna P.

Yelp
Delicious donuts with a twist. Hard to describe them but they're good! Store is super small, kiosks to order on, or with an employee. Service was fast!

John H.

Yelp
Hate to say it, but this place was a huge disappointment, and I'm being generous giving them two stars. I thought that after all the hype, and for $3 a donut, they would be extraordinary, but they made Duck Donuts look even better than they are. Seriously, I thought of how tasty and warm Duck Donuts are, and how much better their toppings are than Mochinut's. And I've never had a corn dog before, and after the one I had at Mochinut, I never will again. I tried the Hot Cheetos Dog, and it was definitely not worth the 10-minute wait. The thick Cheetos-stuck-to-Mochinut coating was just plain gross. Way too spicy, and the whole beef hotdog underneath was rubbery and looked & tasted like it had barely been cooked enough. Needless to say, it was definitely not worth its $6.99 price tag (plus tax). And needless to say, I won't be going back to Any Mochinut.
