11 Affordable Seattle Restaurants the Whole Family Will Love | Eater

"As the name of this locally grown chain suggests, the crust (or the greens, in the case of a salad) is your canvas for endless modifications. A six-inch base with or without gluten makes an individual order, but you could consider sharing an 11-inch version in either regular or thick crust. From there, go wild with more than 30 toppings like pesto or barbecue sauce, roasted or chopped garlic, asiago or gorgonzola cheese, anchovies or salami, and a swirl of ranch or buffalo sauce. Don’t forget the Cokes to complement your creation." - Vox Creative

Google
The front entrance is hard to find; it’s in the alley but no visible signs to help you find it. The service inside was good, the pizzas tasted great as well. We have two veggie pizzas that they had as new specials.

Google
This particular establishment is located near the University of Washington campus. Its location is good for the young college life. The pizza was delicious!

Google
Love the food here, salads are awesome, the specialty pizzas are so good. Love the drizzle options. The spicy honey is a personal favorite. The personal size pizza is big enuf to share between 2 people & be full. They are fast friendly & efficient! A large group of us came, about 25 and they flew thru are orders in no time! Only waited 10min max for food. They have plenty of indoor & outdoor seating. The outdoor area is covered which is great in Seattle. If your having trouble finding the entrance you enter in thru the alley just past the outdoor dining area.

Lily

Google
The front entrance is in the alleyway . I found this location to be less well lit than other locations. There is plenty of seating here. One of the few cheap eats on the ave. They are fairly generous with the toppings.

This is definitely a great spot to come before a Husky game! The MOD pizzas are always tasty and here is no different. The only reason for less than 5-stars is like most of this part of town, it's a rougher area. If you are going to a game though, quick, warm, yummy, and easy walk to the stadium from here. Worth a stop, and you can customize your pizzas, your way. The option for a double crust is good if you like thicker crust, the bread is good. Also, I thought one pizza was good per person, I forget these are a bit bigger than traditional personal pizzas, we could have shared three pizzas for 4-5 people in our party.

Google
This place was slammed with customers and online orders when I got in but the line kept moving steadily and the employees were all communicating with each other well. There was a problem with one of my pizzas and the two people finishing pizzas out at the oven (short dyed hair in a ballcap) and cutting and boxing (long hair tied back with a bandana) who seemed to be in charge made sure I was able to get a remake quickly without being too disruptive to the rest of the line, and quickly let the rest of the team know about the problem to prevent it happening again. The customer service was above and beyond expectation. Food came out great. Absolutely getting pizza here again.

Nicholas Smith

Google
Food tasted good, but this is my 2nd time picking up from here and opened my box and this was my pizza. One of the employees must be skimming tiny slices because this does not = a full circle. You can even tell by 3/4 of the pepperoni slice in the middle is missing.

Tiffany Chou

Google
Great pizza! Crispy thin crust that holds up pretty well (and I don't usually like thin crust). As many toppings as you want for the same price too. Staff is super nice. I'd recommend coming here. They've also got dairy-free cheese!

Yelp
Awesome spot in the U district! It's hard finding good service and good food in the U district. Walked out of a few places due to bad attitudes so I stopped in here and it was empty but the staff made my bad day into a great day. Staff is upbeat, professional, hard working, and super kind! The pizza was made just how I like and was super tasty! Clean lobby with booth, table, and large group seating. MOD Pizza is similar to chipotle or subway where you tell them what you want on your pizza then it gets prepared so it always hot and fresh. My go to is pepperoni pizza with a marinara, garlic, and pesto base. I love to put broccoli, corn, olives, and spinach on my pizza. At the end you get to choose your sauce on top which is optional and I always choose lotssss of Buffalo hot sauce! Super delicious! Would totally recommend and return! Thank you for the great service and great pizza!!!

Yelp
Damn! That was good! Damn! That was good Damn! That was good! (OK. Now I have put the minimum 85 characters) lol

Yelp
Mod never lets me down. Great food. Great people. Their employment assistance is great. The place was very clean. Love Mod! Good job guys!

Sebastian H.

Yelp
WOW! the manager here is unmatched. his service and attitude to me and my friends was impeccable. I'm so impressed by cole's attentiveness and customer service!

Doug B.

Yelp
I don't get it. This is really BAD PIZZA. First of all, you can't have a good pizza without a good crust and this is the worst crust I've ever tasted. None of their ingredients are above average and many are worse than average. I don't care how friendly the staff are or how clean the premises are...that's a McDonald's excuse. Instead, they dodge creating good pizzas by encouraging you to "build your own," meaning "don't blame us if you don't like it!" If you are judging by how many calories you get for the money, then this is your place. If you're looking for a decent pizza, this is NOT THE PLACE.

Jayne R.

Yelp
Don't understand the positive reviews. The cheese, the toppings (supposedly all regular) wouldn't even qualify as light. The cheese was barely a skim across the surface of the really bad crust. Pretty much the worst pizza I've ever had.
google avatar

Yelp
I'm a big sucker for pizza and also unlimited anything, so I knew it was my calling to try out MOD Pizza. You can either choose between build your own pizza or from a menu of pizza choices. I opted for the build your own pizza, which cost around $12. The great thing about build your own is that you get unlimited toppings, you can definitely get the most out of your money!! They made the pizza in less than 10 minutes, and some delicious, hot pizza is served! I normally can't eat an entire pizza in one sitting, but this pizza was gone in 15 minutes. Because the crust is thin, it was easy to eat this pizza without feeling heavy afterwards. The tastiness of your pizza honestly depends on what toppings you like and what you put on your pizza. So it's great that you have that creative freedom!
google avatar

Alex H.

Yelp
Food has good quantity and good portions for the price. Taste is also very fresh and well made. Was well filled afterwards and definitely will be coming back again.

Yelp
MOD Pizza is great. It's fast, tasty, and you always know that you can order what you want. This particular MOD location is conveniently located off the Ave, an easy spot for any UW employee or student to enjoy. It gets busy during the busy lunch hour breaks so make sure to plan ahead!
google avatar

Sijeeta D.

Yelp
It's both mine and my husband's go-to choice when we are craving pizza. The best part is that you can have toppings of your choice. So generally, there is a lot of variety in the meat options available. A couple of times, the servers are generous enough to give a little of each of the meat options too. There's a wide range of greens and other toppings to choose from. The portions are always very generous. I always get a loaded pizza with greens and protein. It is really stomach-filling and more than sufficient for one person. very reasonable price and really good customer service. They also give the choice of any two sauces
google avatar

Kimmy L.

Yelp
MOD is one of my favorite pizza chains. I always layer my pizza up with red sauce, dairy free cheese, and double of all veggies. Yes, I'm a veggie monster, and proud of it. I love the variety of toppings, but my favorites are the roasted broccoli and roasted corn. The employees are friendly, quick, and efficient. My pizza is usually done within 15-20 minutes, depending on how busy they are. Pro tip: I just tried their Mike's Hot Honey Sauce for the first time, and I am addicted! It has the perfect balance of hot and sweet; it will make your lips tingle for sure! Ask for it on the side though, because a little goes a long way. I've also tried their Buffalo sauce, SriRancha, and Balsalmic Fig sauces. The Buffalo sauce is spicy, but too tangy for my taste. The SriRancha is on the mild side, so if you don't like a lot of spice, I would recommend it. I used to like the Balsamic Fig sauce, but I think it's overpoweringly sweet unless you order it on the side.

Yelp
Overall, this was a pretty average experience. I'd been to this location twice before and had better pizzas, but this time it sort of fell flat. The workers were nice, but the interior of the restaurant was sort of a mess with boxes all over and just had a dim sort of feel because some lights were out. This gave it a subpar atmosphere. I will say, I am pleased with their outdoor seating area! That's a huge plus. Then when it came time for me to make my pizza, the workers didn't seem very generous about the toppings and the crust was a little bit over cooked on my girlfriend's and undercooked on mine. After that, we had super unevenly cut slices, but no harm no foul cuz the pizza would still taste the same. As I said, it was an average experience: the pizza was still tasty, just not as good as it usually is and was a little disappointing.
google avatar

Kalani R.

Yelp
Lol just look at the pic. Super tiny and burnt. And expensive. Only got it cause they were open late

Mr R.

Yelp
The lettuce was wilted, and going bad. Had to ask the person making the salad to pull out the bad parts. Each time they pulled one out, they said "this one?" Then another "this one?" They were obvious pieces of bad lettuce and it the fact that they continued to positively identify bad pieces of lettuce made me question why they were seeking ongoing guidance. They should have gone to the back to get a fresh batch of lettuce. There doesn't seem to be anyone on duty that is in charge of quality control.
google avatar

Steve S.

Yelp
Super fast. Cheap (7$ for a large pizza (enough for 1.5 meals)). Thin crust. Tons of toppings. (This is a review from years ago; I'd bet with inflation the prices have gone up).

Anderson G.

Yelp
I felt discriminated against by this store for not speaking English. I arrived applying for a job and the answer that I mean was we can't give you a job because you don't speak English
google avatar

Tammy E.

Yelp
Good pizza - decent salad - fast delivery time. A good place to grab food when you're in a hurry. Nothing beats fresh hot pizza when you're hungry and have limited time to eat. Portion size is ample for one person and the price is right. I haven't been to this physical location so will update once I have.

Foreign M.

Yelp
They ruined my pizza. Howwwww???? I tried to eat it still but it's literally burnt just as much on the bottom as on the top. How could they even approve this to serve a paying customer. Highest level of disrespect in this one
google avatar

Julian S.

Yelp
I rarely rate chain fast casual restaurants, but MOD is a standout among national fast casual chains. I have been coming to MOD over the years going back 4-5 or so years ago in Seattle. I've eaten MOD in Seattle and around the Puget Sound and MOD in Houston, Texas, and the consistency and quality has been the same across geographies and over time! Affordable pie at a great price! I love being able to customize my own pizza to order and having it come out fresh and piping hot!! Whenever I make my pie, I always load up on plenty of meats, roasted garlic, onions, and all sorts of other goodies! I love the variety of cheeses (mozzarella, ricotta, Asiago, etc) they have to put on your pie -- they even have some sort of Gorgonzola if that's your thing! I do wish the MOD here on the ave had Serrano chili peppers--I loved having that extra kick back in Houston! I also wish the ranch had more of a tang, but this is just a minor complaint! Pro tip: if you're loading up on toppings and don't want a soggy pie, ask for the pizza to be cooked well-done for maximal crunch and fresh-baked taste!
google avatar

Jordan H.

Yelp
This spot has very good service . Gives the customer the option to customize a pizza . The pizza is made fresh in front of the customer . Unlimited toppings and good sizes for price .

Yelp
Mod Pizza is pretty awesome. It's a spot that you can stop in and tell them exactly what you want on your own personal pizza, then the cook it for you! It's a dream. I came here with a friend and it was not busy at all. We were greeted by a friendly associate behind a counter who guided my friend through the process of choosing a crust, sauce and toppings for his pizza. There truly are a ton of options. I opted for a traditional pepperoni pizza with lots of veggies on it - which is my typical jam. I adore the standard thinner crust how it comes out all crispy and perfect. I did burn my mouth on it with my first bite though - so be careful! I went to the dentist the next day and she noticed the scarring on the roof of my mouth! Anyway, this location was great and I found parking right out front. Although, I must say the entrance is kind of weird - you have to go into the alley to go in the front door, which was confusing at first. Please add signage to make it easier to spot the entrance! (or maybe this makes it extra hip to have a "secret entrance?" I dunno - but I'm glad this location is here! Thank you!
google avatar

Bo L.

Yelp
Great customer service and super fast pizza. A previous order of mine at another location was burnt on one of the pies. Kristina, the U.District manager went above and beyond to comp the three pizzas for me to take home to my family. I truly appreciated them going above and beyond. Thank you so much.
google avatar

Jennifer F.

Yelp
Fast and fresh. Great pizza and the salads are amazing. The cauliflower crust is the best. And get the fig balsamic glaze drizzled on your pizza once it comes out of the oven. Yum.
google avatar

Willa C.

Yelp
Made my order incorrectly (I asked for a pizza salad but received a plain cheese pizza, and the employees were not helpful in resolving this issue), and charged me extra for a gluten free crust that I did not ask for. I will give them some leniency as it was somewhat busy and the employee seemed to be new. I like this restaurant usually, and I appreciate that they have vegan options, but I'm definitely turned off on coming back for a while
google avatar

Yelp
A fully customized, make it while you wait pizza joint right off the ave in U- district. In addition to the make it your way pizza, they do offer some fan favorites with set ingredients. I like that you can order a mini (6") as well as other larger sizes. Its a perfect size for a smaller eater. They have a lot of topping choices for vegetarians and meat eaters alike. My favorites were the roasted corn, roasted broccoli, spinach, mushrooms, fresh basil, tomato and artichoke hearts. Even with all the yummy toppings, the pizza fell flat on the flavor in my opinion. The cracker like crust didn't help (I simply prefer it thicker), but I also wish the sauce was tastier. While my pizza was 3 stars, the staff making the pizza was awesome (friendly, patient and super professional - I'm sorry I didn't get his name) and bumped up this review to a 4.
google avatar

Joanne H.

Yelp
Pizza or salads you can make it your own! I'm not a huge fan of pizza - but in the days that I want some it's a good place to go. The setup is a choose what you want any size you want! They have a long list of options for toppings and sauces. It can get tricky for those indecisive folks though so they have preset options. The pizzas are very thin crusted though- if that's anything you have a preference for thicker crusted pizza! I think it helps with the speedier cooking
google avatar

Edward S.

Yelp
I decided to try this place out after some good Yelp reviews and I was very pleased. It is an unusual setup--people queue up lie Qdoba or Chipotle to order a custom pizza. I went at 3pm--and testament to popularity that it was still crowded. I ordered the Mad Dog and added some veggies. The pizza prep people are really quick. I love a thin crust cooked in a wood stove oven and they deliver that. The pizza was delicious and the Modern size was perfect for me (although some may want to order smaller size). The veggies were fresh and toppings were also good. Definitely a good value. The only downside is that the wine is kind of what you would expect in chain, but at least they had wine. I will definitely be back.
google avatar

Mark N.

Yelp
I wanted to order pizza and so here is where I ordered pizza . Mod Pizza and I don't remember the time I order from them. So here they are . I ate one slice and it was alright. Not the best pizza I had in Seattle, but much better than other chain pizza restaurants.
google avatar

Devin S.

Yelp
Everyone loves pizza, and MOD does a great job of serving quality, small pizzas that a single person can order and eat in one sitting (though you certainly don't have to). MOD allows you to create your own pizza from scratch or choose one of the pizzas off their menu, and you can add whatever toppings you would like to it. I usually keep it simple and stick with something like Calexico, and then add all of the peppers they offer for toppings. When it comes to food, I always like to spice things up, and pizza is no different. This particular location has had some douchier types working there in the past, and in the U District that probably is not the biggest deal in the world. They clearly do not all understand customer service, though, which is unfortunate in and of itself.
google avatar

Yelp
Pizza craving? Gone! There are three kinds of pizza cravings that I feel in the night. The first kind is the "I want to stay at home" craving. It's where I want to order pizza delivery and just eat it with a good movie. The second kind is the "fine dining pizza" craving. That's where I would want to go to Tutta Bella or Serious Pie for some seriously fresh, expensive pizza. And the last kind is the "I don't feel like staying home but I don't want to pay so much" craving. This is where Mod comes in. :) Price? Fantastic! As of May 2014 it's 7.17 to get one of their classic pizzas. And if you're a UW college student, you may be lucky enough to come across a Mod coupon that says "buy one get one free." Basically, two pizzas for 7.17? What a deal! It's exactly what my partner and I did. The place is pretty easy and organized. Just walk in and you'll be greeted by the staff and the menu is right in front of you. You can order from their 10 classics and also add whatever toppings you want for no extra charge. However, I like to just stick with the classics and not mess with it. The toppings they pick seem to meld together quite well. So all together we ordered 4 pizzas: Calypso, mad dog, jasper and Ulysses. They are made to order and are definitely fresh. You watch your pizza get made and then put into the fire. However, they do skimp out on toppings a bit. It's not exactly even but still good enough. Within minutes they'll call your name and you can pick up your pizzas. They have shakers of red pepper flakes and Parmesan. Make sure to put them back though because the whole dining area has to share! Let's eat! The mad dog and jasper are pretty much the same except the mad dog has pepperoni and the jasper has mushrooms. Both are red sauce and have spicy sausage. Basically your classic pizza, but still really good. The crust is thin and perfectly crisp! The calypso is smothered in BBQ sauce, has chicken and red onions. Pretty good if you like BBQ chicken pizza. I'm not a huge fan, but I know my partner is. It's his favorite one. The Ulysses doesn't have any sauce. It's actually just based on cheese, herbs and mushrooms. Definitely a strong cheese and mushroom flavor. It is quite strong so if you don't want an overpowering Parmesan like flavor, I wouldn't recommend this one. I'm not sure if I would get the Ulysses again. It definitely was interesting, but not something totally mind blowing. I might try the sienna and see if that's any better. Overall though, cheap, really filling, and the staff are friendly. The pizzas are thin crust and quite good even if the toppings aren't put on evenly. Still satisfies that pizza craving though! :)

Yelp
MOD Pizza is great! It's a short walk from campus and they always have great coupons for BOGOs. You can find these in those Student Guide handbooks or app (not sure if it's still going on), and sometimes they give them out on campus during events. I love that you can customize it however you want with no extra charge. I can finish the regular pizza by myself in one sitting, it's $7.77 (though I shouldn't). I like to order a half & half of one of their options and then add pineapple to the whole thing. I try to get something different every time so I really don't remember what is my favorite. Check out my photos for reference. But anything with pineapple makes it super delicious. My only complaint is that sometimes they burn the crust pretty bad, and I wish that the crust was a little thicker.

Robyn C.

Yelp
The mega dough crust, that you pay extra for, is as thin as paper. Absolutely disgusting dry and crispy pizza. My husband ordered a salad and they didn't include the dressing at all, he even asked for extra.
google avatar

Alex N.

Yelp
Great place for fast pizza! I would say this place reminds me of pieology! I would say pieology is a tad better however this place is the best fast pizza you can get around here!
google avatar

Ly V.

Yelp
Pretty good for a fast food chain pizza, I must say. Love their "subway" model where you can choose whatever toppings, sauce, cheese... on your pizza. The price is cheap and the pizza came out fast and amazing!
google avatar

Rachel M.

Yelp
I really love the concept of this place. It's the perfect college food, because it's a great price for the amount of food you get. You can customize one for yourself so you don't have to compromise what toppings with friends if you shared. They have a great selection of toppings.
google avatar

Luther N.

Yelp
Apparently, in this misguided age of lockdowns and face covering to get food, portions had always been given adequately to anyone wanting to create their own pizza. I went here Thursday of last week and was greeted by unintelligible remarks that I could not understand (due to the mask etc.), and small portions of toppings requested, but the price was even more. Is this likely to be the 'new normal' for MOD Pizza? The first time I came to this location I was overjoyed with the freedom of choosing as many toppings as I wanted and the price was exceedingly reasonable. The staff seemed to enjoy my business and I was happy bringing friends in even picking up for them. Now, I realize many things have changed due to a 'plandemic' but I would like to relive some of those days again at this location (employees that knew my name are no longer there apparently and I miss their spirit!) if ever possible, it's time to make some changes, pronto!
google avatar

Justin B.

Yelp
Food was excellent and the service was quick. Various different options for pizza and toppings. The only complaint is one of the employees wasn't very friendly about opening my friend's Fanta cap. Would recommend

Yelp
Quite impressed this is my Favorite Location of a Mod Pizza! yesterday Special ordered an off menu item double layered alternate -"mega" ha-sent been on the menu in at least couple to several years, the guy and manager wiped it right up perfectly custom also. It's a favorite of mine in terms of the explanation: Instructions to: Currently the perfect pizza! & Tips & Tricks "Ask! Buffalo souse and Ranch on the side -Highly suggested Buffalo Sauce and Ranch on the side! !Neumonic!-!

Yelp
Mod pizza has a horrible staff that is rude. Everyone here should be fired for touching raw meat with your hands without gloves. This place should be shut down and is obviously constantly way understaffed. I finally just got my pizza and they completely burned my pizza.

Odalys N.

Yelp
Food is good, but service can be pretty rude or inconsiderate. Today one of the works continuously mispronounced my name repeatedly after I asked her to stop and she wouldn't stop laughing at my name. Not cool or "socially just" of her.
google avatar

Jen J.

Yelp
I am a pizza lover. Put any pizza in front of me and I'll probably enjoy it. Mod pizza is no exception. I have enjoyed every pizza I've ordered. My typical order is pepperoni, mild sausage, red sauce, parm, mozzarella, ricotta, mushrooms, chopped tomatoes, and garlic drizzle. The only reason it's not 5 stars is due to the service. It's hit or miss. Either the worker is super kind and friendly or they're completely rude and angry. Breadsticks and milkshakes are also very good.
google avatar

Clare B.

Yelp
Usually pretty good but last time I was there, I had some issues. First off, it took around 15 minutes to get my pizza even though there were only 3 people waiting for their pizzas. Second off, the oven person burnt every single pizza to the point where I was watching him pull off completely black ingredients. When I finally got my pizza, it was missing ingredients and there was black stuff from the oven on it? Lastly, my pizza had no cheese on it whatsoever. The cheese maybe went halfway from the center. Read a lot of reviews about similar burnt pizza situations and I'm assuming it's one guy that just doesn't know how to cook.

Tom D.

Yelp
The only delicious pizza around University of Washington! Multiple veggie options plus you can add toppings. The people are very friendly and quick. Also, the price is reasonable. Definitely recommend.
google avatar

Jerry s.

Yelp
I don't see what all the hype is about this place,Pizza was just ok,nothing great about it,small, thin.I enjoyed the garlic cheesy bread more than the pizza.probably won't go back.
google avatar

Jeffrey C.

Yelp
Discovered this place by accident and we love it. Picking your pie, then your sauce, but for real any and all the topping you want, they are not kidding. It's delicious and you'll want to go back soon. Took some friends and they love it now too.
google avatar

Lori C.

Yelp
Delish pizza, good company spells good reviview. We got Lucy sunshine three different ways gluten free, regular with olives, and regular with olives and chicken. All were good. Service was quick and easy. Only thing I can suggest is deliver pizza to the table. But I can walk less than 10 feet. It is nice to have just what I want. Will certainly come back.

Zachary M.

Yelp
The pizza was very undercooked. Doughy. Barely any crisp on the crust. This was after waiting a long time for the pizza to come out.
google avatar

William W.

Yelp
MOD Pizza is slightly above average, but an understandably tasty stop for U of Washington students. It's much in the same vein as Texas-based Pie Five and California-based Blaze Pizza. Like those recently-established franchises, there is a certain appeal to watching the construction of your personally-crafted pie right before you eyes, thin enough to hastily bake in the oven. The mega size was nothing more than two discs of medium-sized dough double stacked. The cheese was of mediocre quality and sparsely spread, like Pie Five and Blaze, but the red sauce was good. The garlic strips were the highlight of the meal because they didn't hold back on the minced garlic!!! The ingredients were fresh but they didn't amaze me. But MOD Pizza is in business of feeding hungry coeds, not dazzling food critics.

Yelp
I feel like this is a really overlooked lunch spot right next to the UW. It's tucked away on the corner of 42nd and the alleyway (the same alleyway in which Cafe Allegro resides). The interior of the shop is slightly cramped but nice and full of light, with a nice little patio for sitting outside. You can get a personal-sized pizza for around $8 with an unlimited number of toppings and options. They also serve salads and pizza-salads, which is a salad placed on top of a toasted pizza crust with cheese. I've only been once, and I tried the pizza salad. I've been searching and searching for a good salad spot and it seems like Mod Pizza is THE place to get salads in the U District. I was given a heaping portion of caesar salad with chicken, all atop of a warm and crispy pizza crust with asiago. It was tons of food- far more than I could finish in one sitting! The pizza-salad is a little more expensive than the pizzas but its still a great value. My food came out quickly and the price is a great value. It is right next to campus so it is perfect for a quick lunch in between classes.
