I usually search and read reviews before I visit the restaurant. I was very satisfied with omakase experience. Handcrafted sushi just melted in mouth in second. It was my birthday dinner with my husband and my boy who's 10 years old starting to eating sushi, and he is a quite picky eater but he loves Modan Restaurant food. Staffs were very attentive and friendly. I will definitely comeback try other food in the future. I highly recommend you must try omakase and tasty cocktails! Everything was perfect except when we check out didn't waive extra parking fees.

It is our 4 year anniversary. We went to Modan in McLean for their omakase experience and it was a major letdown, especially considering the price. At $150 per person, expectations are naturally high. Unfortunately, the meal fell far short of what an omakase at this level should deliver. The courses were very minimal, basic nigiri, and the overall progression felt underwhelming and uninspired. Flavor-wise, the food was below average. Nothing was memorable, refined, or surprising, which is disappointing given how much care and precision omakase is supposed to represent. The fish did not stand out in quality, and the bites lacked depth, balance, and creativity. For the cost, we expected exceptional sourcing, technique, and flavor…none of which were present. To be fair, the service and staff were excellent. Everyone was polite, attentive, and clearly doing their best to provide a positive experience. Unfortunately, strong service alone cannot justify the price when the food itself does not deliver. Overall, the experience felt significantly overpriced for what was served. There are many other places in the area that offer far better omakase or sushi experiences at this price point or less. Based on our visit, I would not recommend Modan for omakase.

Fancy spot near the Cap One area in McLean. Food was pretty good and drinks were enjoyable. Bear in mind where you are at you cus you may be leaving with one less arm and leg lol. Just teasing 😉 But hey, they give a pretty good show on some of the dishes and drinks you can order. Not quite a cabaret but it’s entertaining at times. It’s definitely top tier hinge date treatment haha. Come here for a date or with friends to enjoy dinner. Probably not the best place just for a drink. But they aren’t bad either. Overall nice staff and nice environment. Definitely worth checking out for the experience.

I didn’t take anymore pictures after 3 dishes my table got out of 5 we ordered. Fine dining experience such as they give you wet hand towels after we ordered. However the food, I would say just okay. The tables in the center are round black fancy ones and all the edges and corners have wooden rectangular tables. They filled those corners and cheap tables first. I sat in the very dark back corner and didn’t like it at all. First time at Modan but had hundreds of dining experiences. They do try to be fancy to match their menu prices but the soy sauce that had leaked underneath, the server’s face when we ordered 3 dishes for 3 people, those corner cheap tables they gave us. Maybe they have their own rules how to fill the tables, I have never worked at a restaurants so I won’t know. It’s just my experience that I didn’t like much. I won’t recommend to my friends. My friend didn’t recommend also before I went but still went. It was just a learning experience I should go for good foods not good Instagram ads. Pink lady has too much sauce on the plate, too salty. 3 pc sashimi on martini glass, too much oil so I don’t taste spicy at all when they describe it as spicy dish, the third one in the picture, we all didn’t like it, tiny pieces of snow crab I couldn’t taste that’s why. They have 90 min parking validation. That’s good. Although were done in about an hour from sitting and leaving. Didn’t want to order more food. After 5 plates, 3 of us were full and unsatisfied with the experience. They came and checked us how we like their food. Only the server who refilled water and manager had smile. For 3 people with 5 a la carte orders, the bill was $150. Thursday dinner from 6-7 pm, plenty or tables. You don’t need to be nervous about not being able to get table.

Great food and Drinks. Their omakase is perfect for me because the quantity doesn't stuff me and it's a little shorter than specialized omakase places; every piece is great and it comes with a dessert too.

I usually don’t like leaving bad reviews, but thinking about how this dinner was ruined just makes me so angry. I live in this apartment building, so I placed a pickup order. I’ve been here a few times before and the food was decent, and I know this place isn’t cheap. But the sushi rolls were ridiculously small, and more than anything, I couldn’t believe the chicken karaage. It literally looked like someone’s leftovers. Is that really worth $25? Fine, I could’ve understood if the quality was good—but it was clearly refried and old. I’m not talking about personal taste here; I’m talking about objective quality. I’m usually the type of person who just throws the food away and moves on, but this time I actually went back to show them the food and asked to cancel the order. It was a relief that the manager refunded it without argument, but their attitude was unbelievably rude. Do you think getting my money back makes me happy? You ruined the joy of my dinner and wasted my time. And yet, the manager acted as if they were reluctantly doing me a favor—looking down on me with this arrogant attitude. The least you could have done was say, “I’m sorry.” (There were two managers and I’m talking about the one in front of) Selling food in that condition and still showing such shameless behavior—honestly, the manager’s attitude made the experience even more unpleasant. This really shows how little you care about your customers. Do you think just having a fancy interior will keep your business going? Well, good luck with that.

Modan doesn’t shy away from pushing culinary boundaries. Dishes like the creamy uni pasta and spicy firecracker roll show off inventive twists on Japanese staples. The plating is artistic, and each dish has a story behind it if you ask the staff. The staff were attentive and friendly, making us feel welcome from the moment we arrived. Perfect for adventurous eaters looking for something beyond the usual. Highly recommend!!!

We went there for my spouse’s birthday and chose the tasting experience menu. They let you try six different items: milk bread with caviar, sushi made from six types of fish, cod with a special sauce, wagyu beef sushi, and finally crème brûlée. Everything was fresh and very tasty. I think the experience is a bit pricier than it should be, but considering how delicious everything was, I can’t really complain. I’d recommend it.

Stopped by with a friend on a Sunday night with reservations. I don't think reservations were necessary though because it was pretty empty. This is not to say the food is bad but the restaurant is very hard to find! It's hidden at the back side of the Heming apartment building. We ordered a lot of food and everything was super tasty. I liked how all the flavors were not too aggressive and complemented each other very well. The presentation of the desserts was crazy too! The server explained all our menu items thoroughly and guided us through the selection process. I would recommend for a girls night out or a date night. It has a calm moody elegant vibe. Will definitely be back!

Service: 5 Decor: 5 Food: 2.5 We went for omakase and sat at the chef's counter. This was one of the biggest disappointing omakases I've ever had. And at that price, I'm not impressed. The chef was nice but the actual courses left a lot to be desired. The flavors weren't therefor those that weren't just fish. The presentation was fine. The fish was fresh but nothing to sing home about. I think the chef could have been more engaging about what we're eating. The sake was great- we ended up getting two bottles. Prices are a bit steep overall- def an amount we're willing to shell out for quality omakase. Not this. The restaurant itself is beautiful- so maybe a work event would be fitting.

I actually enjoyed everything we ordered. But the prices are a bit on the higher side for what you get. Also they charge extra for cucumbers (for uni sashimi) and jalapenos (rice dish wasn't spicy enough so asked for extra). My favs were the scallop, tacos and Indonesia hot pot rice thing. Sort of reminded me of bibimbap. Our server forgot our first order of drinks I think cause it didn't come out till first dish was done and we ordered everything at once. Liz bartender in training was running food came by a few times to check up on us and explain things. Even gave me a mini walk around tour of the restaurant. Super sweet and adorable! We got a huge dessert platter everything on it was good.

My friends and I came here for Happy Hour on my birthday. They serve this at the bar and high top tables as you enter the restaurant. Ambiance: nice clean open restaurant. Seating around the sushi bar, dining tables around the perimeter, separate large bar and high top communal tables. Service: it wasn't busy when we got there around 5:30pm on a Monday. Food and drinks came out at good pace. Food: we came for small bites and cocktails didn't their Happy Hour. I was hoping to be blown away but I was a bit underwhelmed by the food. I know they are known for their wagyu and omaske...I will see how I feel about dropping a pretty penny with those dishes. The cocktails were great!!! Definitely will come back for those.

One of my favorite sushi spots in the area. A bit pricey but it's great quality sushi. Loved the drinks and the ambiance too . Good service as well so overall a winner:

Lively atmosphere, and love all the windows too! Service was friendly and helpful as well. This would be a nice place for groups and get togethers. As for food it was ok. Spicy karaage- not really spicy but good Pink Lady roll- I liked that it was balanced and not too much rice Firecracker roll-salty Lava cake- was ok I think the highlight of our meal was actually our "old fashioned" they were awesome.

A chic and upscale Japanese spot in Tysons. My boyfriend took us here for our anniversary and the place was stunning. We came on a Friday night and the live DJ added a fun vibe. The decor is beautiful, the space is big, and staff was friendly. Parking is in a garage, and they validate, so bring your ticket. Food was mostly good. Sushi was fresh, flavorful, and nicely presented. I recommend the Pink Lady and Firecracker rolls. However, i'd say that the fancier items were a letdown. The wagyu dumplings tasted like cheese balls, and the 'bread' on the $42 lobster roll (which can be finished in 3 bites) tasted exactly like a vanilla wafer topped with caviar. The sweet Japanese omelet also tasted exactly like a Korean cheesecake. Service was fine. Overall, a fun spot with solid sushi, but I'd skip the overpriced premium dishes.

Modan is an experience you must try. Classy ambiance and great with kids. Our kids are the Karaage (fried chicken pieces) and Umami chicken (teriyaki). We ate everything on the special menu and all were soooooo delicious! Quality sushi and ingredients. Our server Josh was very helpful and expeditious. Can't wait to come back for more!!!!!

Made a reservation on a Saturday night at 8pm at the sushi counter, and despite the heavy down pouring rain just a half hour prior, I was surprised to see the entire restaurant was full when we arrived. The restaurant is easy to find when you're driving, but when the elevators from the underground garage are out of service, it definitely makes finding your way out a little more challenging! We ended up finding our way to the street level and then making our way up the steps to the second floor to get to the restaurant entrance. Upon entering the restaurant, the lighting was slightly dim, initially suggesting an intimate and sophisticated setting, but is quickly offset by the loud music. The dinner menu is pretty self-explanatory and not as elaborate as some other sushi establishments, making the decision making process less burdensome. We shared the roasted cauliflower appetizer, which had an interesting tart and citrusy flavor from the sauce. Although the dish enhanced our dinner by adding a satisfying crunch, I'm not sure I would order it again as the tartness just didn't seem to complement the cauliflower well, and instead, overpowered the natural mild and subtly sweet flavor of the cauliflower. The salmon carpaccio, on the other hand, was very well executed. The tartness of the dressing, texture of the toppings, and freshness of the garnish paired nicely with the salmon. I was definitely impressed by this dish, and would order this again next time without hesitation. The star of our dinner was the toro caviar, which comes with 2 pieces per order. This is one of the options on the Chef's Creation menu, and consists of coarsely minced fatty tuna held together by two small pieces of crispy milk bread and topped with caviar. This was a perfect combination of crunchy and savory without any fishiness, and the fatty tuna just melts in your mouth! I was impressed, and would order seconds and thirds next time (especially if the menu is unchanged, and nothing else stands out at the time)! As for dessert, we ordered the matcha cheesecake, which is Modan's most popular dessert option. The dessert can easily be for one person, but it can also be shared between two people if you're already both full. The dessert is presented as a creamy matcha filling within a small wooden square box, topped with small pieces of crunchy, slightly sweet and savory pieces of cheesecake "crust" and a few pieces of freshly chopped strawberry and an edible flower, with a side of yuzu sorbet on top of small pieces of cheesecake "crust." Without a dessert menu that provides a description of the dessert and all of its "glory", I didn't expect to be served a deconstructed cheesecake (let alone with a side of yuzu sorbet), and maybe that's the reason for my diminished enjoyment of this dessert. I will most likely skip dessert here next time. Overall, Modan offers a nice setting for a date night, but the loud music and the mostly mediocre food options make for more to be desired. I won't hesitate to come back, but I also won't have as high of expectations for the food next time.

Came here for date night and it was great! Loved the vibe and the music selection was exactly what I like, Afrohouse and house. Our table wasn't ready yet so we chilled at the bar for a moment and got a drink. My partner liked his and I got a mocktail, which was alright. They had a ton of food options! We shared a couple apps and rolls. The sushi was so fresh, amazing quality. Definitely want to come back and try more.

Modan's was quite an experience but I don't feel like it was the experience for me. We went as a group of 8 for a friend's birthday. The decor was beautiful and the large windows made for a spectacular sunset view. The bathrooms were clean and individually themed. Service was lovely, when they came around. It took quite sometime to get orders placed or received or the attention of the server. But, when he was with us, he was very informative and patient. Maybe that's why it took so long. The food was disappointing. We ordered nearly everything off the apps and sashimi menus because the portions were so tiny. (I would not recommend that as our bills were higher than the rooftop.) We left wanting more. However, the dry aged sashimi was delicious. This may be a class shock but, we ordered several cocktails and noted that some of us were charged for the square ice cubes vs the round ones. We were not asked if we had a preference so that was a shock. Overall, glad we tried it but would not go back.

Came here to celebrate my 41st birthday and overall had a good experience. I was a bit disappointed that the sushi wasn't spectacular, but the prices were. There wasn't anything special about their sushi or sashimi that was worthy of a $7-$10 price tag PER PIECE. We started with the tuna tacos, those were very good. We got a couple of rolls, some sushi and some sashimi but unfortunately none of the dessert options sounded that great so we went to get Coldstone haha.

We were pretty excited to check this place out and wanted to love them, but Modan was quite a let down. It took a while for anyone to greet us. Once they eventually did acknowledge us, our original server stopped by to let us know someone else would be taking our table and that person stood there confusedly asking why she was being assigned our table while we continued to wait to be given drinks or have our orders taken. This haphazard service experience persisted through a Saturday night dinner visit, when we observed that while there was a live DJ, the restaurant was strikingly somewhat empty for a nice weather evening. The lollipop special sushi roll starter we had was surprisingly kind of lukewarm and fishy tasting, as were the lobster and salmon tacos. Our seaweed salad was a unique but disappointing rendition that was oddly soupy / watery. The miso black cod was overcooked and the spicy miso lamb chops were tasty, but weren't the slightest bit spicy. This was one of the most lackluster meals I've had dining out in a while and I would say the ambiance is one of the only highlights we enjoyed here. Our server advised that their signature cocktails are all made in large batches ahead at the start of the day so if they run out of one, it isn't possible to order the drink which I found to be a little disappointing for $22+ cocktails. There's a cute backdrop at the entrance for photo ops, which is on brand with this place's seeming to focus mostly on aesthetic and not on actual food and service execution. We were lured in by their boasting that one of the head chefs was formerly with Nobu, but I think it would have been better just to have gone back to nobu or Shoto where we've had consistent better experiences than this place.

One of your staff members -- whom I have not personally met or interacted with in a service capacity -- disclosed to my business partner how frequently I visit your restaurant, how much time I spend there, and even what I typically order or spend on. This conversation took place despite the fact that I have never been to Modan with this business partner, and I have never shared this information voluntarily. Additionally, we my business partner and I do not have any pubic posted photos together so it brings up the question, why this connection and topic is being brought up. **Why This is Concerning** High-end dining establishments thrive on discretion, professionalism, and respect for guest privacy. When staff members discuss a patron's visit history, spending habits, or personal routines with third parties -- especially those not present at the time -- it crosses a boundary of professional conduct. This type of disclosure can be perceived as gossip or judgment, and risks damaging both the guest's trust and the restaurant's reputation for discretion. **Professional & Legal Considerations** In hospitality, guest information -- including frequency of visits, spending patterns, and personal preferences -- is considered confidential. Discussing this information outside the context of providing direct service can be viewed as a breach of privacy. At its core, this is an issue of data protection and professional ethics: if a guest cannot trust that their presence and habits will remain private, they are less likely to feel comfortable frequenting the establishment. **Recommended Next Steps** I would strongly recommend that your management team speak with staff to reinforce the importance of: * **Confidentiality** - Guest information should never be shared outside of a service context, even casually. * **Professional Neutrality** - Staff must avoid commentary that could be construed as judgmental or invasive. * **Discretion as a Standard** - For high-end restaurants, discretion is part of the luxury experience and should be treated as a core value. I value the restaurant, but this experience was disconcerting enough that I will not be return or recommend Modan however it may be best for your clientele to feel that they can have meeting and bring whomever with confidence of this not being discussed thereafter. I wanted to love this place, but it just didn't deliver. I'm giving two stars mainly because they kindly accommodated four extra people for my large reservation, which I appreciated. However, the service and food didn't live up to expectations. Several items were forgotten, and while everything from the edamame to the wagyu dumplings, spicy tuna rice cake, lobster roll, and nigiri was fine, nothing really stood out--especially given the higher prices. Even desserts like the matcha cheesecake, lava cake, and crème brûlée were just okay. The manager never stopped by to check in, which made the experience feel impersonal. With some improvements in attention to detail and consistency, it could be much better.

Get all the dry aged tastings, uni tasting, and A5 wagyu and thank me later. Dry aging tenderizes the fish and beef but gets rid of the "fishy" taste in the fish while accentuating the beefy funk in the beef. The Old Fashioned is well-balanced and delicious. The wine and sake list offers a nice blend of affordable bottles up to high end vintage. Modan easily has the most extensive sake offerings in the DMV. This restaurant should definitely be at the top of your list for your next special occasion.

Service - 5/5 Food - 2/5 Decided to venture out of our normal sushi spots with the hubs on a Friday afternoon to enjoy my birthday lunch here. We ordered the king salmon carpaccio, chirashi bowl, & the Chef's classic roll selection. Salmon carpaccio was good. Loved the tangy & sweet combination of flavors. On the downside, the rice in the rolls & in the chirashi bowl was overseasoned, overcooked, & mushy. A step up from grocery store sushi. The fish quality was lacking & was a strange, leathery texture. We were comped 3 different desserts, which was a pleasant surprise. Creme brulee was good, but the sugar crust on top was way too thick. Mochi icecream was delicious. The chef also gave us some little bites of cake & chocolate. Our favorite bite by far! The cake was dense but moist & had great cardamom flavor. Overall, great presentation but the food just fell flat for us & had us leaving very disappointed, especially for this price point. We'll stick to our go-to, Ariake. The space is huge & tastefully decorated & service was just excellent.

3.5 Tucked away in Tyson's, but still no readily available free parking, a paid garage opens right next to the entrance of this place. A bit overpriced. Decent service, really nice decor. Sushi was okay - the rolls weren't prepared that nice, with end pieces looking like they are falling apart, and the rice left a bit to be desired. The Dragonball Z roll was ok - you don't taste the fish much which can be a good thing, but I like the eel flavor and this tasted like just sauce. The salmon avocado roll was good but pretty standard. The nigiri is a bit overpriced at once 1 piece per order but I think they said it's because all their fish is dry aged, too. I personally didn't taste the difference in the dry aged sushi but maybe my palate isn't refined enough. I didn't like their ginger and their wasabi wasn't very strong (was it not fresh? I barely got the sinus clearing that I usually crave). Assorted vegetable tempura was okay, hard to share especially when they say this restaurant is supposed to be 'tapas style'- I also thought the vegetables didn't have much flavor and the batter wasn't that great. The eggplant was my favorite. The spicy Karaage was really good. Nice flavor and crunch. Would get again. A few at our table got a large Tbone to share. Very nice presentation and accompaniments (loved the pickled vegetables) - I don't eat steak so can't say much about it but I think they enjoyed it. It seemed pricey to me but I think for 35oz in a restaurant, that price tag of almost $250 is pretty standard. It was really nice of them to provide a hojicha creme brulee for my spouse's birthday for us to share. It was just okay, however, a bit on the watery side and the caramelized sugar crust was a bit thick. Unsure yet if I'd come back; definitely out of the way for us. I think if I came back it wouldn't be for the sushi -- would love to try the miso cod and other items.

We tried their omakase and we loved their high quality curation of fresh fish and their skillful interpretations. It comes with bottomless Champagne (I rarely drink but can't refuse a little bit of champagne!) It's bar seating for their Omakase and their sushi chefs are right at work where you're seated. The place is very spacious with very nice modern ambiance with nice private dining spaces as well. I plan to come back for their omakase again soon!

It is a relatively new restaurant right across from the Archer hotel with high price & small portion. 1. Reservation: tricky Well, they have a huge bar area with super long table that can sit up to 10 people and it has always been open, so reservation is not necessary. However, the greeter is so mean and will demand you to have a reservation. Also, she demands full name and number when you are just trying to sit at the bar. Even hospitals and police stations don't demand that to enter! 2. Food: tastes okay but not good for the price point it is at. Very small portion and high price. DRINKS: $30 old fashioned? and it didn't taste good and barely covered half of the glass. It is a rip off! - clear mushroom: truly is clear. no flavor. mushroom in clear water like. - rolls: for $20, we get a small bite that was not delicious - $21 taco: very small 1 bite wagyu taco. So, beware of the price level. 3. Service: good - door girl: terrible - server: never tried any of the stuff and can't recommend anything, didn't tell us the daily specials and when we inquired he had no idea - manager: awesome! 4. ambience: nice. spacious, tall ceiling. Good decor. Great for dates, business dinner or happy hour with colleagues.

Hated it - do not recommend! Frustratingly bad service for the grotesquely high price tag. For premium prices I expected a sophisticated experience, with friendly staff as soon as you walked in, and attentive servers that would explain each cut of fish as it came out. We got none of that. The sushi chef (we sat at the counter) literally handed us our plate of sushi over the counter, which was weird (the counter is a lot higher than our table, so we had to reach up awkwardly to get it). Our other dishes were served regularly by the servers, so this caught us off guard. The hostesses were unprofessional and aloof (it felt like I walked into a Wendy's), it took forever to get anyone to acknowledge us when we got seated, and at the end of the meal, they mischarged us. Extremely chaotic and unorganized. The food was overpriced for how mediocre it was. The karaage was pretty tasty, but kind of burnt. The wagyu taco was disappointing, and definitely not worth $21 for the tiny snack that it is. The spicy tuna roll was good, but nothing special. I liked the king salmon nigiri, but the barracuda was chewy and had a strange leathery texture. The trevally jack was unique. Overall, there's way better sushi in the area. We left hungry, and the whole dinner experience was ruined by painfully slow service, lack of care for the customer, and food that was not executed with the level of finesse required from a place charging such absurd prices. It was akin to eating at a busy fast food joint, though fast food would've been the better option.

Decor and ambience are stunningly beautiful! It's the first thing you notice in this new modern restaurant. The staff were friendly and our waitress definitely knew the menu well as she listed a bunch of "must try" items for us. Kudos to her because yep, we liked everything she mentioned! Appetizers and entrees came out in a timely manner and everyone in the restaurant were super nice. Food was awesome -- Wagyu dumplings, Wagyu taco, salmon carpaccio, yellowtail carpaccio, miso cod, filet mignon, wagyu on hot stone and of course the lobster to make it "surf and turf". I cannot describe how delicious the wagyu taco and wagyu on hot stone were. Every bite melted and I wish I could have just another bite, and another. We all had a lychee martini and a bottle of sake and both were great for our dinner and evening. I can't wait to come back for another meal but everything I mentioned, does run up the tab pretty fast. I enjoyed every bite and it was totally worth it for me because I enjoyed all the elevated dishes, but don't be surprised with the tab if you like to indulge in all ways of wagyu! They age the meat and fish in house is it does make a difference! It's so so good

Tried this Nobu sister restaurant, Modan, on a Friday night. Service 5 star with attentive cheerful and knowledgeable staff. Spacious and modern interior. Family friendly. Price is comparable to Nobu but choices are more limited including hot dishes. Tried Aged toro and salmon first time. Thumbs up on quality of sashimi and appetizers. Fun looking cocktails but pricey. Also had miso black cod and grilled salmon which had good flavor and tasted fresh. The cooked portion are considered entrees but it does not come with rice or miso soup. Also had their lava cake with marshmallow topping and Japanese shaved ice. All in all an excellent spot for special occasion because of the price.

We reserved and we ate. Starting off with a pro tip, don't show up early or before 5 p.m. because you'll be standing awkwardly in the little lobby in the front (a gentleman compared it to a bus stop!). We got our coats taken and led to a table by the large windows. It was beautiful, the sun was setting, the snow added perfect elements to the scenery. The restaurant has very chic cool girl energy. Our waiter was great, he was super attentive and recommended great dishes. Kinda felt bad for him because he was running around trying to serve a lot of tables so kudos to him for making us feel seen. The food was phenomenal, if you're a fresh sushi lover, definitely check this place out (the fish was so fresh you could barely taste it). Honestly, I could've skipped the filet mignon but my friend really loved it. Don't leave without trying the dessert because the matcha cheesecake was flawless and the creme brulee was to die for. It is a bit pricer, but definitely worth it for a special occasion or if you're just feeling a little fancy.

First of all--our reservation was at 5:30 on a Friday. And it wasn't until I went to their website right now to help write this review that I realized they had a happy hour. Almost everything we ordered is on their happy hour list, and yet they charged us full price. Nobody even mentioned a happy hour. So now on top of nothing really quite blowing me away, I'm irritated that I was cheated. Now onto what I was going to write originally: Really good, quality sushi--just not that interesting, or worth the money. I had a coconut-washed rum cocktail that was really delicious, and I was totally happy with. For food, we chowed down on the karaage fried chicken, salmon tacos, salmon carpaccio, wagyu dumplings, and the pink lady roll. Everything was perfectly good, but the only thing that really blew me away as being worth the price was the salmon carpaccio--it was incredibly flavorful. When we left, we talked about coming back for the omakase tasting menu at some point, but now I'm kind of just over this place.

The restaurant is stunning! We walked in with no reservation and luckily there was bar seating available. The bartender, Christopher, was nice, had great energy, knew the menu like the back of his hand, and made us laugh a lot. We got the waygu dumplings, shrimp tempura roll, lamb chops, tacos, and eel avocado roll. Everything was delicious! They also have a tasting and seasonal menu that is 5 courses. Also, if you're wondering, there isn't a specific dress code. I called before hand and they said come as you are.

This place didn't live up to the hype for me. While some of the staff were friendly, the front desk staff wasn't very welcoming, which made the experience feel a bit off from the start. We ordered a few appetizers and nigiri, but when the nigiri came out, they forgot some pieces, so we had to send it back. Although the fish seemed fresh, it didn't stand out compared to other sushi spots I've visited, it felt pretty average overall. With so many sushi options out there, I'm not sure I'd rush back.

I've always seen Modan on my way to work when it was under construction. After hearing about the soft opening and taking a peep at the menu, my friend and I wanted to try their tasting menu for 125.00/person. The tasting menu comes with five courses (~10-12 items for the two of us). The interior is very high-end, modern with an open kitchen and the sushi/drinks bar in the middle of the restaurant. COURSE 1: MIXED GREEN SALAD Hands down one of the best salads I've had, and it's so simple. It's mixed greens topped generously with crispy shiitake and drizzled with the truffle goma. This was so delicious. It was so truffle-y and the shiitake only added more umami to the salad. My friend and I were initially disappointed when we first saw the salad, but it ended up being one of our favorites this evening. COURSE 1: MODAN TACO: TUNA & SALMON We each got two Modan tacos (nori shell). The tuna was mixed with spicy mayo(?), and it made a tasty, savory bite. The salmon was mixed with a sweet marinade that I did not expect upon first taste. The sweetness was a pleasant surprise, and the ikura on top was a nice touch. Each taco was filled with a good amount of fish and both were enjoyable. COURSE 2: TAI UZUSUKURI The tai uzusukuri was a bit acidic from the yuzu olive sauce which I really enjoyed. The ume wasabi salsa gave it a slightly spicy kick that was delightful. I'm usually not a big fan of sour flavors, but this one was great. COURSE 2: YELLOWTAIL CRISPY SHIITAKE The shiitake, guacamole and yuzu miso definitely along with the light, but rich flavors of yellowtail made each bite an umami bomb. There wasn't a lot of savoriness, but it was very rich. COURSE 3: NIGIRI We each got a piece of tuna, salmon, yellowtail and shrimp nigiri. I personally am not a shrimp nigiri fan, and this one was no different than others. The yellowtail was creamy and rich. The salmon was extremely fatty and buttery, and it was definitely my favorite. The tuna was also delicious with its milder flavors. I would get all three of the tuna, salmon, and yellowtail again. COURSE 3: SPICY TUNA & SHRIMP TEMPURA ROLLS The spicy tuna was a regular maki roll that had a light amount of spicy mayo and a good tuna and rice ratio. It's simple and delicious. I don't normally enjoy shrimp tempura rolls (this one was inside-out maki), so this one was just meh. Nothing mind-blowing. COURSE 4: BLACK COD The black cod was marinated with a sweet miso sauce and topped with some smoked trout roe. I thought the cod was cooked well as the texture was buttery soft and melted in my mouth. Yet, I thought it was too sweet and the smokiness of the roe was kind of off-putting when eaten with the sweet fish. I personally did not like the combination. However, my friend enjoyed the cod a lot and she said she would order again. COURSE 4: UMAMI CHICKEN The chicken thigh was incredibly juicy and perfectly cooked with the crispiest skin. The teriyaki marinade was fine, nothing to write home about. My friend thought it was a bit too salty. We both were not a fan of the pickled vegetables on the side. COURSE 5: PASSIONFRUIT KAKIGORI This is Japanese shaved ice drizzled with passionfruit syrup (with passionfruit seeds) and mango condensed milk. Within the shaved ice, there were pieces of lychee. This was a phenomenal dessert (a lot of tropical sweetness and tartness), a lighter option to end a big meal. The shaved ice consistency could be better, though, as some pieces were extremely fine like snow but others were chunky. COURSE 5: MATCHA CHEESECAKE The matcha cheesecake came in a small wooden cake with a small scoop of yuzu sorbet next to it. Both were topped with this really crispy granola-like bits that was so good. There was also a sweet syrup we poured on on the sorbet but I forgot the flavor. The matcha cheesecake was very whipped and airy, not like the typical dense texture. However, it was still incredibly rich, not too sweet. The matcha flavor was definitely evident. The yuzu sorbet was extremely tart and quite overpowering. The syrup consistency was a bit watery and it was hard to get a good taste of it (in addition to the stronger flavors of yuzu). We got lots of food and were incredibly stuffed by the end. The quality and flavors were phenomenal, and the experience was better than expected. I will say though, for the regular tasting menu, they don't give you any of the "pricier" items here -- you'll probably just get a couple of the basics. If you were hoping to try more of their bougier options like steak or lobster, I would not recommend the regular tasting menu. One thing I didn't like is that they were not able to split the check per person. My friend had ordered a beer and our server told us he could not split the check accordingly for what we ordered and that we had to either pay under one card or split the check 50/50. I've not had this problem at other restaurants, so I'm not sure what happened here.

Nice ambiance, menu leaves you expecting more. Been here twice for special occasions, while the sushi is appetizing and delicious, the main dishes are dissatisfying. There are no à la carte sides and my table was offered plain white unseasoned rice to accompany our entrees. For the price, at least à la carte items should be offered as an option.

3.8/5 Ambiance: great interior design! Very modern with open kitchen layout. Tables were large enough so the 4 of us weren't elbow to elbow. Service: our server was very nice and explained the menu well however from the time we sat down and ordered, it was about an hour. We didn't mind too much though. Food: We ordered 4 pieces of toro nigiri which was about $14 per piece. It was a good treat/appetizer to start. We also ordered the tuna crisp and I think that was the group favorite! You can skip out on the tempura though.. we ordered a mix vegetable tempura which came with a few pieces that weren't very crispy. For our entree, we shared a 40oz tomahawk steak. The fattiness of the tuna and steak definitely made us feel full enough. They just opened so they didn't have mugs/cups for hot tea or warm water. They also weren't serving hot sake yet so that was a bit of a bummer! For the four of us the total came out to be around $450 It was good but the experience and food was not worth what we paid. However, I'd definitely come back to try their cocktail menu.

This was an incredible experience. The moment you walk in, the atmosphere itself just pumps energy into you. It's a precursor to get your taste buds rolling on all 8 cylinders! Went on a very busy Saturday night and our group sat at the bar. There was 6 of my closest friends celebrating my big event. Despite the busy night, (you could tell the waiters were busy), yet the service was attentive, prompt, courteous and polite. I posted all the pics of the food we ate and the sake. IT WAS GOOD!!!

I had the dry aged 9-piece sushi is my main course, and I have to say hands-down. It's one of the most delicious I've had at a restaurant. As appetizers, we had shrimp tempura, and Wagyu dumplings, and these were perfectly fried and savory. Overall, it was a very clean, seamless experience, and the interior was also decorated very nicely I had a pleasant time here.

Good drinks, albeit quite expensive as expected. Recommend the Fruit Ninja if you're not much of an alcohol drinker and want something sweet. Wagyu dumplings were like a bite of cheeseburger with aioli sauce. Very good, but at the end of the day it is a cheeseburger Chuutoro was dry aged to remove the fishy taste, but I still taste it--the flavor profile was not too different from regular tuna but it is very good and softer in terms of texture. The DragonBall Z roll was also good with eel and the eel sauce but nothing special. Karaage was very good but it's hard to mess up good Karaage. Weirdly enough, the steak is probably the best bang for your buck as it is priced normally when you go out. Nothing stand out, but it's pretty inside. We had a very nice server, and they were attentive. Warm towels were provided once we were seated.

We did the omakase on a Tuesday night at 6pm for a birthday. We were the only ones doing omakase at that time and we were practically done by 6:30- so it was very fast. The meal started with included champagne. 97% of the omakase was great, I just realized I'm not a fan of hand rolls and that was the last "sushi" before the dessert. We did add on the wagyu tasting which was three different wagyu pieces. With the omakase and the additional three pieces it was the perfect amount of food. Full but not hate ourselves. As we were there for a birthday we got an extra dessert but it was the same as the omakase dessert so that was just a little weird. Note that parking is not free but you can validate to get a discount at the host stand. We would go back to try their regular menu. The place was packed by 6:30 so that felt like a good sign to us in addition to the good food we had.

So happy that Modan opened in Tysons. I have a lot of business meals and always used to have to go to Arlington/ Falls Church/DC to get an upscale Japanese experience. Now Modan has become my go-to spot! Food is exceptional under Executive Chef Chico's team where they provide a wide variety of classics and enhanced menu with modern twists. Service was fantastic and overall ambiance helps with the overall experience. Highly recommend for dates, evening out for drinks, happy hours, and more formal settings like client dinners. I had the Omakase which was phenomenal with cavier hand roll service. Ross the GM is super attentive and checked in a few times for feedback which was appreciated.

2.5 stars. I know it's a high end Japanese restaurant, but the quality did not match the price. The sushi portion was very small per roll and the taste was just average. I also tried the lamb chops, and while the flavors were pretty good, it was very small. Also the bar was pretty expensive too.

Fancy pants rolls that impressed me, no. Quality cuts that could be tailored to an omkase experience, maybe next time. Wagu dumplings were too rich and unbalanced that didn't highlight the wagu, which was a waste imo. I can tell the staff were all new and were nervous since the Japanese pit bosses were marching the restaurant which made the entire place uneasy and unwelcoming honestly. Parking was easy but could be a troublesome when the area becomes busier. Overall, unsure what to think about it since the majority will praise the overly rich unbalanced wagu dumplings. For this price point, underwhelmed.

The ambiance was amazing. They had a live dj keeping the vibes cool but upbeat. Food was amazing, from caviar to the lamb chops. Highly suggest those as well as the wagyu dumplings. Also had the modan lava cake or desert. Stunning!!! And our server Jesh was so sweet amazing and knowledgable about food and gave great suggestions for our first time.

Good service, good food, neat decor, and seriously high prices. The King Salmon Carpaccio was recommended by our server, and it was really good. The salmon was fatty and high quality, and the accoutrements -- Sweet Onion Salsa, Truffle Aioli, Ponzu Gel, Crispy Onions -- made it a nice package. However, the price tag for the small portion was $26. The dragonball roll (eel, crab, avocado, cucumber, etc.) was similarly pricey. The sautéed vegetables (asparagus and bokchoy) are covered in a decent ponzu sauce. All in all, we had a good meal, but the price is kind of prohibitive.

Amazing experience! I say experience because the dinner was more than the amazing food. The personalized service by our waiter was great, and the showmanship and presentation of the food was outstanding. It was a destination dinner for us and it did not disappoint. So glad to have a top Japanese restaurant in Tyson's.

Unbelievable experience The new chicken wings and Ladt Sunada old fashion were amazing. Wagu and uni pasta always solid.

We celebrated my birthday here a few days ago with 2 other couples and did the Special Tasting Menu. The service, food and ambiance was perfect! The cocktails were ok, probably will stick to wine when we go next. But the staff was incredible and that is what made the food taste even better!

Modan is officially one of my new favorite spots. Perfect place for a girls night with a great vibe, and look. The staff were very welcoming, friendly and on top of everything. Absolutely great service. All of the recommendations were on point! The food was absolutely amazing, from appetizers, to drinks, to entrees and desserts. Definitely will be coming back soon to try more items on the menu.

My fav sushi restaurant!! I had the pleasure of coming here with a large group for a private dining experience to celebrate a friend's birthday and everything was phenomenal from start to finish. I got to try a wide array of food items from the appetizers, sushi, meat and seafood. A few of my favorites are the fruit ninja cocktail, spicy tuna rice cake appetizer, yellow tail crispy shiitake, the black miso cod, lamb chops and lobster. Followed by the most delicious dessert, matcha cheesecake! Even though we were a large group the staff was very timely and attentive, taking great care of us the whole night. I look forward to dining here more often!

Walked in at 5 pm, exactly, on a Saturday and was able to get seats for 2 at the sushi bar. I wanted to try this spot after seeing it on a few instagram reels. But, this place definitely did not live up to the hype. I was happy that they were able to accommodate the tasting menu for my date, while I ordered a la carte, as I don't really have taste buds that can handle whatever you throw at me. So that made me happy that I didn't have to compromise my date's experience. But, after going through the courses we kind of wished that they declined our request to do that... nothing hit the mark taste wise. Even for my a la carte food. Mushroom soup, very bland. Every time I sipped it, I dreamed of being at any ol chain hibachi restaurant that would've gotten it better. In the yellowtail hamachi dish, the fish is cut a bit too thick and the sauce is not good. Firecracker roll which is shrimp tempura with spicy tuna on the top, it was meh, at best. This is my go to type of roll whenever I eat sushi and I've had much better. Same with the ebi nigiri, it tastes just like what I would pick up from Wegmans sushi bar. Also wanted to note that a couple came in and sat beside us, and also ordered the tasting menu about 10-15 minutes after we ordered, and after my date's first course, all of their courses came out before hers. Even for the first course, the server presented it to them first, and they had to decline and inform that we ordered first. Serving of the courses was very unorganized. If you're looking for a nice sushi experience and are willing to travel outside of Tysons, please Shoto or Nobu instead. Way better ambience, way better taste for a fancy date night. For a more casual sushi experience, Sushi Prince in Fairfax tastes much better, in my opinion!

The food and service industry as outstanding! We went to Modan for our anniversary dinner. I would put Modan experience in the same category as Shoto or perhaps Wren at the Water Mark Hotel across Rte 123 from Modan. The vibe is modern chic. I was really disappointed to hear that they don't validate parking and we had to pay $13 for parking to dine at a restaurant in McLean! I won't be going back till they fix this issue. Other diners who walked out with us after dining at Modan made the same comments.

Made a 5pm reservation for the omakase but they had us sit at the bar until 5:30 then omakase started around 5:45. It was soft opening so seems like they still had some kinks to work out. The omakase wasn't bad, if you compare it to nakazawa. Nakazawa has more variety but this place has other things besides sushi. I also felt that we left kinda still hungry. Overall, not bad, they don't validate parking as of now, they are working on a contract so park on the street.

Tried this new place tonight after hearing it from a friend. The head chef came from Nobu. Coming in I have a very high expectation since I like Nobu a lot. I didn't have reservation and since it's Friday, I sat at the bar with no wait. Peggy is serving us. The good thing is the menu is very simple and in one page. Sometime when you go to a new restaurant you can get overwhelmed with large menu. The place is very upscale and spacious. In the middle of the restaurant is the Sushi bar that has seats on three sides. Food - we orders a lot. For starters, we ordered 3 different taco appetizers, Dragon Rolls, Octopussy Roll, King Salmon carpaccio, octopus carpaccio, variety of nigiri including barracuda and golden eye snapper, A5 Wagyu, lamb chops, and black cod miso. For dessert we ordered Passion Fruit and Lava Cake. Overall, everything is good but my favorite is the taco. It's so good. They dried their fish so I want to see how the Cod taste. It's on the sweet side so it's hard to tell. Now, it's not cheap so be prepared when you come and eat here. But the food is good and I don't mind paying for it. Highly recommend make reservation for this place. It only opened for one week and it's already packed here.

We went for a celebratory lunch. The service was terrific. The food was fine, but for as much as our family LOVES sushi, we thought the sushi good but priced far beyond the level of sushi we ordered. It was fine, but nothing left me thinking, I can't wait to go back for that nigiri, sashimi, or app. Yes, we are so lucky in the DMV to experience amazing sushi that does have me dreaming about going back for another meal ...and at far more reasonable prices. I can't speak for the ambience other than it's a pretty venue with clean, upscale minimalist decor. I do hear that it's super fun later in the evening.
