Mofongo Cafe Review - Berry Hill - Nashville - The Infatuation

"This sunny little cafe in Berry Hill serves up Caribbean classics from Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, and Cuba. This is comfort food to the nth degree—flavorful, satisfying, and clearly made with a lot of love. Grab a seat on the big patio and dive into towering plates of slow-cooked meat, fluffy dirty rice, crispy tostones, and creamy, garlicky shrimp mofongo. They also put together a damn good cubano and crispy spiced beef and guava/cheese empanadas that you’ll be dreaming of long after you’ve polished them off. Top it all off with a tangy passion fruit or blackberry juice and you’ll be toddling home happy. photo credit: Casey Irwin photo credit: Casey Irwin photo credit: Casey Irwin" - Bailey Freeman

11 Nashville Latin American Restaurants Worth Visiting | Eater Nashville

"The crowd favorite in Berry Hill offers an array of Dominican, Puerto Rican, and Cuban cuisine. A menu featuring mofongo, tostones, picaderas, and empanadas offers plenty of choices to explore the regions represented. Ask for the spicy jalapeno sauce on the side to add a kick." - Jackie Gutierrez-Jones

Google
So wanted to eat Puertorican food (of course, my roots) and found this place. Decided to take a drive to check them out…. First thing I noticed, food out in trays, second, asked for the menu, I noticed no Puertorican food whatsoever! I even told the guy, nothing on the menu is Puertorican food, he smiled and that was that. I ordered Biftec Encebollado, Arroz Blanco, Habichuelas, Ensalada de Coditos, and Maduros. I must say, the food was good but that piece of steak, well you can see how thin it was. The only thing from PR was the Malta India! You can witness in the picture, side of the bottle. For dessert, had a piece of Flan de Queso, and it was on the pasty heavy side if you know what I mean… flan is supposed to be smooth fast cut. Maybe the cheese, who know. I jabbed at it (pic) and that was it. For not being food from my cultural background, the food was good. This place “looks Puertorican” because of their decoration, pictures, etc, and definitely not (not even close) when it comes to the food! A place promoting and/or that serves Puertorican food is not cool! This is not a Valdi approved joint!

2nd visit: Food was good. More gristle than goat on my goat special but I guess that is par for the course when eating goat. Rest of food was great. Visited Mofongo Cafe on a lazy Sunday night. Greeted promptly and was told how the ordering process works as it was our first visit. Pre-made serving buffet with rice and various meats and salads. Or you order from the menu and it's prepared for you. Decided on some mofungo, which we chose one with garlic shrimp and one with chicken. The chicken was great and flavorful. The shrimp was good. The mofungo had larger chunks of plantains and was not very mashed. The sauce was a must to moisten the mofungo, which was still good, but i was expecting more of a mashed potatoes consistency that I had a couple of times while traveling in DR. At any rate, the beef and chicken empanadas were delicious, and the meal overall was enjoyable. I will try again.

Google
My only real gripe was the high price, $21 for lunch seems a bit pricey to me. Food was really good though and had a home cooked feel to it which is nice compared to all the fast food out there.

Google
I ordered 2 Cuban sandwiches to go. The restaurant was clean and the service was good. I lived in PR and Tampa and these Cubans didn't have anything on them. They had very little meat and not much flavor. Usually a Cuban is very flavorful. Might have something to do with the amount of meat on it. Will not be coming back. It was a pricey as well. $28.50 for 2 sandwiches and a can of diet coke.

Google
I recently visited Mofongo Cafe and had a mixed experience. The atmosphere was decent, though nothing to write home about. I decided to try the coconut shrimp mofongo, but unfortunately, it didn’t quite live up to expectations. It wasn’t anything like the traditional Puerto Rican mofongo I was hoping for – they added some unfamiliar meat inside, and the shrimp had no flavor at all. Overall, the food was disappointing. However, I would recommend trying the guanabana juice, which was refreshing and enjoyable.

Google
We found this place from a Facebook video and had to try it. We live 3 hrs away, and we're in town only for a day. We're so glad we came. The service was great. We ordered enough food for 3-4 people even though there's only two of us knowing we were sampling and taking the leftovers home to enjoy later. My husband raved about the goat. Next time we're in town, we'll be stopping by for some good eating.

Google
It is Worth the drive, we live in Cleveland Tennessee and drove to Nashville. To try this very good. We'll be back again. Try the goat meat. And 🥟 Empanadas.

This was my first time trying this restaurant and I must say both my husband and I were impressed and ate a delicious dinner. My Puerto Rican Husband ordered chicken and rice and pastel. He devoured the whole thing and took some home as well. I got the pork and it was so tender and flavorful, the meat was just falling off the bones. The croquetas were delicious as well. I ordered a mango juice and it was perfect! The prices here are reasonable for good portions of food. Hubby and I will be stopping here the minute we get another chance !

Yelp
BFF is Puerto Rican and every state we travel to he's on a quest to find a PR restaurant to try. I was disappointed that it's an order at the counter type of place and mostly buffet style as I prefer table service (only mofongo is made to order and delivered to your table). As for the food, I ordered one of their plates (buffet style) and gogothe arroz con gandules (rice with pigeon peas), yuca and queso croquettes, seasoned chicken (bone in) with aribichuelas guisadas (seasoned pinto beans) and salad. Food was ok, but very dry and I prefer chicken breast (too many lil bones). My friend ordered mofongo with chicken and a side of arroz con gandules. He said it was good, but not like home. The total with drinks and 1 flan was 46 bucks, which isn't terrible but not great either, but I understand that the mofongo takes time to prepare and everything is homemade. Dining room was clean and inviting, and the employees were very attentive and friendly.

Yelp
After seeing an Instagram post, we decided to check out Mofongo Cafe, excited to try a Caribbean spot in Nashville. The restaurant offers a cafeteria-style setup where you can pick your meat and sides, or you can order from the menu. If you choose to order from the menu, expect about a 15-minute wait for your food. We ordered fried sweet plantains, beef and chicken empanadas, two Mofongos--one with fried pork chunks and the other with shrimp in coconut sauce--and a flan. The empanadas were disappointing. The pastry was dry, and the fillings were just ground meat, nothing particularly memorable. The Mofongo with shrimp and coconut sauce was definitely better than the Mofongo without the sauce, which was quite dry and hard to enjoy on its own. The fried pork chunks, however, were tasty and well-prepared. As for the fried sweet plantains and flan, they were okay but nothing spectacular. One thing to note is that you have to bus your own table when you're done, which wasn't a big deal but worth mentioning. The prices were reasonable, but overall, I wasn't impressed enough to return.

Yelp
Was my 1st visit to this place. I found them through Yelp application while I was traveling thru Nashville to Dallas. I can tell that this place is magic, great service and food. The empanadas, mofongo, yuca frita, pasteles... everything is amazing. 100% recommended

Yelp
Delicious Caribbean food and a good value for lunch. I was drawn to the Mofongo Cafe because of their bountiful Caribbean menu, and especially because they have Mofongo! I went for lunch, prepared to order the Mofongo con Camarones al Coco (Mofongo with coconut shrimp). I quickly learned they also offered a "Lunch Buffet" for $11.85. While it is called a "Lunch Buffet," it's actually a steam table from which you can select 1 type of rice, 1 type of beans, 1 protein, and 1 salad. The portions are large and this was obviously a good deal, so I pivoted and ordered the "Lunch Buffet." I ordered the yellow rice, the pinto beans, the goat (more on that later), and the avocado coleslaw. The portions were large and delicious. The goat was in a dark, flavorful sauce that worked well with the yellow rice and it was delicious. Before you run to the Mofongo Cafe to order the goat for lunch, please be aware that the Lunch Buffet with goat is an up charge and will cost you $16.50 instead of $11.85. I thought it was worth the price. The goat was that good and the portion was large. My friend had the pork instead of the goat and he loved it. I was also impressed by their large selection of Agua Frescas. For $4.00 you can get a large cup of "Pineapple Pear," Lemonade, Passion Fruit, Blackberry, Pineapple, or Guanabana (sour sop). I tried the Pineapple Pear and it was flavored perfectly without being too sweet. I recommend you try one of the Agua Frescas if you go. The drinks are chilled in a cooler, and there's an ice machine if you like it colder. The staff were friendly and helpful, and the restaurant was nice and clean. I plan to return to the Mofongo Cafe soon to try the Mofongo con Camarones al Coco and maybe the Guanabana Agua Fresca. I don't think I've ever had Guanabana. The food is delicious and well worth the price charged.

Yelp
Delicious really was craving some Puerto Rican food. This hit the spot ! Food is already hot and ready to serve. A lot of options! Some dessert which next time I'll try
google avatar

Yelp
We make the drive here every once in awhile. I do enjoy the food. We always get their buffet options, but i am still waiting for the day I can get my arroz morro! They give you plenty of food and staff is super friendly. We've gotten the lechon, chicken, and it's always been real good.

Yelp
Mofongo Café is always on point. Their food is delicious. They have quick service and the ambience reminds me of being on the islands.

Yelp
Was in the area and looked up what options nearby were good. Stumbled upon this place and overall it was a good experience. I can guarantee that you will not leave hungry when you come to this restaurant! The gentleman who took our order was very nice. The decor transported you to the islands. Enjoyed our visit to Puerto Rico and DR last year and the food was very similar to what traditional food is there. If you are expecting more spicy and food with a zing, that is not the food style. Overall enjoyed our meal here.

Yelp
Absolutely loved my visit to Mofongo Cafe. It's tucked away in a beautiful teal house in Berry Hill. I was greeted warmly by the employees behind the counter. They explained the meal and buffet option. Everything looked so yummy, but I came for the mofongo. I tried the coconut shrimp mofongo, per the positive reviews. And it did not dissapoint, I helped myself to a guanabana juice. So yummy!

Yelp
THIS IS THE SPOT I moved here from Jersey and haven't been able to find anything close to good Spanish food in the area. We have this place a shot because someone recommended it to us and we are very glad we came to try their food. It's authentic and they have a ton of options. Place feels like home.

Yelp
One of my favorite places to eat in Nashville. Such a bright, colorful place with friendly people and hearty comfort food. I truly can't recommend Mofongo Cafe enough. I usually order a tray with rice, black beans, beef tips or pork ribs, croquettes, and yuca with the orange sauce. The tray itself comes with a protein, a bean type, side salad, and rice. The portions are very generous! Often times they'll serve freshly fried croquettes and yuca, and it is truly mind blowing. The croquettes are filled with queso fresco with a crunchy yuca outer layer, and the yuca fries are soft on the inside and go perfectly with any of the sauces. I have tried other items on the menu, too, here and there, and have found everything delicious and savory. Service has been consistently spectacular. I once had a birthday dinner on the patio with over 20 people and the manager came by to say hello us!

Yelp
Friendly service, helpful staff, clean establishment, and really good food. My oxtails fell off the bone and were smothered in this delicious gravy that married beautifully with rice and beans. The portions were huge, and I quenched my thirst with one of their delicious fresh juices. It's definitely a place I suggest trying.

Yelp
Coming from living in NY & Miami I missed my Puerto Rican/Dominican/Cuban mix of food. So glad I found Mofongo Cafe! I love how family friendly the restaurant is & the service is great. It feels like your at a family members house with the music playing & the cute little decorations around. The young man who usually works the register is always friendly & helpful. I've tried a few dishes from the Mofongo, to Mangu, beef stew, etc. and all have been comforting & flavorful. You can either order from the hot station or place an order from the menu which will be made to order. The food can take a little time to come out, but it's worth the wait. I've taken my Puerto Rican family & Dominican friends to Mofongo when visiting Nashville & they all enjoyed their meals. They also offer catering, I ordered a tray of empanadas for an office party & they were a hit! Everyone was asking where I got them from. Definitely check them out if you're in the area!

Yelp
Service was great ... food was awesome and you can take your dog there. We ordered the plate .. your choice of rice .. beans .. salad and meat ... also order a Cuban which was huge and came with delicious pita chips . If you are in the area check this place out .

Yelp
Mofongo Cafe is a hidden gem to many, but those who know it love it. The folks who work here are kind and quick with their service, and it's always a pleasure to see them. The food is SO flavorful. The meat falls apart because it's so tender, the sweet plantains are always a must get for me. I like to mix up my meat, rice, beans, plantains, and spicy sauce all up to get the most perfect bite every time. Love love love this place!

Yelp
I stumbled upon this gem in Berry Hill by accident! This is a family owned Caribbean restaurant. It's a casual spot like a meat and three, and they have regular offerings from a set menu as well. From our entry, the employee was so kind! He took his time to explain to me and my mom about each of the offerings. We decided to get one buffet style meal and one plantain mofongo. For the buffet style meal, we got seasoned chicken, brown seasoned rice, salad, and fried plantains. Each dish was impeccable! The chicken was so soft on the side. I'm a sucker for plantains so I loved this part. We also tried the coconut shrimp mofongo. I've never had mofongo so this was an interesting experience. I don't have anything to compare it to, but I'm glad I got to try it. As a cherry on top, their portion sizes are huge and very reasonable for the price point. If you're looking for a home cooked meal but don't feel like cooking, give this place a visit!

Allysha C.

Yelp
As soon as I walked in and got that nostalgic whiff of Abuela's house, I knew the food and service was going to be amazing! I ordered a simple plate of arroz blanco, con pollo guisado, ensalada de repollo, y un jugo de mango (which was literally to die for). I don't think I took a single breath as I ate. 10/10!!!!!

Yelp
WOW! We catered this food to our Airbnb while in town this weekend and not only were they super nice, organized and on time, the food was absolutely incredible we ate on it all weekend and I'm left wanting more. Open a location in Denver PLEASE.
google avatar

Yelp
This place was amazing! I don't have the picture of the yucca croquet. They were orgasmic! The other meal I got was the mofongo West shrimp, and that was delicious also. The best part of this place is that the service was amazing and the employees were so nice!

Larry V.

Yelp
While the presentation of the restaurant was pleasant and the ambiance was inviting, unfortunately, I experienced food poisoning after dining here. Although the food came out quick, the food was served cold, which was disappointing. Additionally, the water from their ice/water vending machine had an unpleasant odor reminiscent of wet dog. Regrettably, due to these experiences, I won't be returning to this establishment.
google avatar

Yelp
This place has a diversified menu and everything I have tried. Is it excellent. The price for whatever you get is very reasonable. The people are always friendly. In the location besides being hard to deal with the traffic sometimes is very good.

Yelp
Muy buena food con mucho sabor latino . El servicio fue bastante bueno The ambiance was nice.

Yelp
Was in Nashville for the the evening and suddenly got the need for some Puerto Rican food! Did my research on Yelp and chose Mofongo Cafe. I was the first customer there and was met by a young man and young woman that were very attentive and pleasant. I ordered a shrimp mofongo, rice & beans, and pastelillos de guayaba y de piña. Well, I was disappointed with the lack of "Sabor" in the main entrees and dessert pastelillos. Soy BORICUA and expected more. The ambiance is on point and is probably the cleanest restaurant I've visited in quite awhile. Sierra Linda, Bayamon!
google avatar

Sondra S.

Yelp
We wanted to find a good spot for Dominican/Puerto Rican food, We ordered the mofongo with shrimp and garlic sauce, mofongo with fried chicken, yuca fritas and passion fruit natural juice. The sauce for both mofongos were extremely watery. The shrimp did not taste like garlic sauce, tasted like shrimp water. The mofongos itself was not stuffed with anything and they were very soft on the outside. The sauces were not flavorful and they were watery. I have always had them slightly crispy on the outside and stuffed with whatever protein i ordered, but maybe it was just the cooks preference ? The yuca Fritas were fresh and the juice was delicious. I would definitely go back to try other dishes. The service was excellent and the place was clean and inviting and I felt like I stepped into a family restaurant in el campo in Puerto Rico

Yelp
I love Mofongo Cafe, and it recently turned a terrible day into a terrific one with its consistent, super-speedy lunch offerings. A self-proclaimed Caribbean restaurant serving Dominican, Puerto Rican, and Cuban cuisine, Mofongo does everything right in terms of service, style, and sabor. Further, when the patrons are all mostly ordering in Spanish, you know you've found a genuine gem in Nashville. They have plenty of different plates you can order during lunch or dinner, but I decided to go for the pescado al coco mofongo. The fish for that particular day was shrimp, and the mofongo itself was just the right amount of pork and coconut creaminess paired with hints of garlic. I paired this with a jugo de maracuya (passion fruit juice) which was lovely to cool off in the summer heat. Service was quick, and if you know what you're ordering, even quicker. It's a bit of an assembly line style order followed by a register area for drinks. There is plenty of indoor seating, but there's also a beautiful patio should you prefer to dine outside. The parking is a private lot up a hill with some street parking below. I highly recommend this to anyone in the Berry Hill area for lunch or dinner.

Lucas G.

Yelp
This place is amazing. The food here is out of this world. There's all sorts of things to choose from, all of which are cooked to perfection, and beautifully seasoned. It was my first time, and this nice gentleman helped me get my order so smoothly. The vibe of the place was great too. There was nice music playing, cool paintings and posters, with this home like feel to it. If you're ever in the area, you NEED to eat here.

Ariana R.

Yelp
Came here with my family for the first time. The food was delicious. We had a bit of everything but didn't try the Mofongo. Maybe next time. Salsa and merengue was on so made me feel like I was home. White rice with beans was delicious. The chicken and carne frita also. We had empanadas de chorizo and guava. Chorizo one was really good! Tostones could have been a bit better but they also had mayo ketchup, so props for that :) Had some flan as well and it was pretty decent!
google avatar

Greg S.

Yelp
I've been here twice now and my wife really likes it. Service is excellent, food is good in my opinion and very good says the misses. Parking is tight and somewhat unstructured. Inside seating is plentiful and pricing seems reasonable for the amount of food. Overall a good, not great meal.
google avatar

Kyle W.

Yelp
It's about time to try something I have never tried before - Mofongos! They are a Puerto Rican dish primarily made of mashed plantains, plus some topping. For this visit, I got the mofongo con camarones al coco (shrimp in coconut sauce) which had a decent number of shrimp on top of a generous serving of mofongo. For $15.99+tax, this is an okay deal for a fast casual type of place, as the portions are more than enough for a hearty meal for one. The dish is served with some salad. It is overall well made - the mofongo can be a little dry but it is very flavorful throughout and there is enough coconut sauce to enjoy it. I like the balance of slight sweetness versus savoriness.

Philip M.

Yelp
Nothing to write home about! Rice was cold and hard. Fried yuca was cold and soft. Pork was salty. Three stars is a gift. The Nashville Explorer guy must've been stoned the day he came here! Bring a sweater, the place was freezing.
google avatar

Cirwan S.

Yelp
Came to nashville thinking hot chicken was the only good thing to eat. But I was wrong! Mofongo cafe has a few different options. They have a buffet menu and regular plate options. I got the oxtail along with Fried banana and rice. Amazing!!! Servers were great and restaurant was clean! Follow me on ig and YouTube for more delicious eats! @cerogrubs

Yelp
This place is a lowkey Gem. They have a variety of Puerto Rican and Dominican food. The Mangu with queso frito mixed perfectly. The service was attentive and friendly. They played bachata and other Dominican music that took you back to the island. Highly recommend this place if you are in Tennessee.
google avatar

Brian K.

Yelp
Seeing this place across the street was the deciding factor in booking a room at the Iris Motel on a recent visit. We were in town visiting family for a few days, the motel looked decent enough for the price but as soon as I saw Puerto Rican/Dominican food nearby I was sold. Seriously, the Iris Motel owes this place a cut. This place is great, so great we ate there twice in our three day stay. We took our whole family, twice. Everyone ordered something different each time and everyone was happy.
google avatar

Zay T.

Yelp
Coconut shrimp mofongo was heavenly! Literally, I'm still dreaming about it. I wish we had a place like this is San Francisco because the mofongo was so moist with well balanced sweet/savory flavors. The shrimp was cooked perfectly, and the coconut sauce paired well with the dish - it wasn't too coconutty (you know what I mean). The restaurant was super clean and there were plants of places to sit. The staff was really friendly, and they accommodated the fact that I don't speak Spanish with kindness. I had questions, which they graciously answered. If I lived in Nashville, I would come here all the time. I'm obsessed with plantains, so mofongo is one of my all time favorite meals. They do it so well here, which is rare to find (most places make dry or flavorless mofogo). Definitely come in to enjoy a meal! All the other food looks amazing too!

Jose B.

Yelp
This place have amazing food and great service. Ambiance is great and very reminiscing of back home food places. I really love this place and it's good people.

Yelp
Delicious! Nice chill vibe. We had the pork Mofongo and the shrimp Mofongo with coconut sauce. The shrimp and sauce was out of this world. Dirty rice and beans were nice. The fried plantains are incredible. We'll be back!!!

Yelp
This showed up as being very close to where we were staying in Nashville and we LOVE Puerto Rican food. The beef, beans and rice, empanadas, and salads were all delicious. Staff were very nice and helpful. The flan and tres leche looked really good, but we behaved lol. Very reasonable prices too! I'll be back.

Yelp
Amazing food. A must when in Nashville. Service is always friendly and bilingual. The restaurant itself is a great spot with plenty of parking and seating.

Yelp
A hidden gem! Food was fresh and delicious. Service was great. Plenty of inside seating and a large menu. We had the coconut shrimp mofongo and two kinds of empanadas. The coconut shrimp was amazing and the empanadas were flaky and flavorful! Would definitely come back!!

Yelp
Very clean place, great selection Latin Caribbean food: Mangu, Mofongo, Cuban Sandwhich Great Cuban sandwhich

Yasmir D.

Yelp
The food was awful. Absolutely no flavor at all. Not a hint of salt even. I was so excited to get my Puertorican food and was so disappointed. The carne frita was over cooked, completely unseasoned, didn't even had onions on it. The mofongo was totally flavorless and unseasoned. It was a waste of my money, time and excitement. Save yourself the heartache and find a different place - because there is not enough mayo ketchup in this world to cover this awfulness

Yelp
Tried this place for the first time w my family and it didn't disappoint us. Food was delicious and staff are very friendly. Place is clean. Def coming back for more!

Yelp
AMAZING. One of the best kept secrets of Nashville. Got the dinner plate thing. I dont even know what I got but everything was amazing. ++ points for the Empanadas!!!! SO AUTHENTIC SO GOOD SO TASTY SO HOT Try seating on the patio, esp during sunset. Beautiful views.
