Where to Find the Best Regional Indian Cooking in NY and NJ - Eater NY

"The menu of this handsome hilltop spot is centered on traditional Punjabi, Maharashtrian, and other northern fare, including chicken curry, lamb jalfrezi, fish Kolawada, and aloo gobi masala. From there the menu zooms to Indo-Chinese, Indo-Thai, and Bengali sweets, plus a full South Indian menu of dosas, idlis, and uttapams. A favorite dish: Bombay chaat in an edible bowl sprinkled with pomegranate seeds — the latter an ingredient that provides a touch of color everywhere at Moghul Express." - Robert Sietsema

Came here in a Thursday evening while on a drive. Service is terrible. We chose a spot. Ordered and chaat , Hakka noodles and mix grill. Mix grill takes 25 minutes. Chaat was ok. Hakka noodles was pretty decent. Mix grill was decent too. It was hot from tandoori. Not much customers and music was interesting. You would think at an Indian restaurant, they would be playing Indian music but they were playing light rap lol. Am not coming here again. Used the bathroom and saw an interesting sign. See pics 😂.

Nice portion sizes for the reasonable prices. Go on a weekday so parking is not an issue. Food tastes good. Large selection too.

Absolutely amazing restaurant, delicious food, great service and amazing staff (jovial and nice) We went on valentines so the place was jam packed but the service was fast and food was delightful. Enjoyed a lot. There is parking but at peak hours a lot can be an issue. Thanks for serving us with delicious food😊❤️

Overall food was okay, and tasted nothing special. There needs to be more flavor in the dishes and spiciness. Chicken Angara: I thought this would be spicy, but sadly that was not the case at all. There was no spice and tasted like any other chicken tikka dish. Also there was less salt, which was definitely needed. Drums of Heaven: Another disappointment. Again lacking flavor and needed more gravy and tasted which was missing. Also the chicken was a bit chewy and not as tender as it should be. Margarita Pizza: Definitely this was loaded with lots of cheese. The sauce had a nice kick.

Google
For an Indian Restaurant in Edison where there is so much competition, this place is just average especially when it comes to Indian Entrées. Their snacks and Indo-Chinese dishes are pretty good, but Biryani was a let down.

Food was good, but the service was not good or confusing. Being a name Express, I was understanding that it is a fast food or self service eatery. We were party of four. I thought we were going to have dedicated server but that did not happened. The drinks were served in plastic cup. After we got our food no one came to check on our table if everything was OK or anything else we needed!! We ordered total of Eight different food items. Malai chicken came very last and we thought they forgot, as no body care for coming to the table to give an update. After we ate we have table full of dirty plate, it was not removed until we ask them to remove it. Without asking me they charge me 15% tip , plus 3% convenience fee, which is I do not know what is that about. Even after charging total of 18% on my card, they were waiting for me to give more tip!!!!! With this saying some INNOCENT CUSTOMER--must be paying them tips 2X , not knowing that they already paid or charged the tip on your card. With all this reason I am confused, what kind of place is this? They do not have any dedicated server, I did not see any server or waiter/waitress who cares to take care of table in a respectful manner, on an above they giving me drink in plasting cup and charging 18% or more on card as a tips!!!!!

Google
Veg dine in review. Food is really good. Yumm. Service was not bad. Tandoori Soya chaap - found reviews praising it and was really nice. Navratna Korma as it was as first dishin menu and turned out to be creamy and good. Its expected to be on a little sweeter side. I think was perfect. Garlic naans were nice and perfect. Desserts: Menu doesn't have all options. Ask staff and they will guide you to display. - falooda was good. - rasmalai tresleche was okayish. Found very sweet. Afternoon/Lunch can be a bad experience on a sunny day if you sit on a wrong table. Suggestion: water is served only when requested. Should be default on table. No mouth freshner. Overall nice and will return for sure. Food is good 🤗😋

Google
I’ve been consistently eating at Moghul since 2018. Hailing from Kolkata, I’ve very strong feelings about Indi-Chinese food and Moghul is probably the only place in entire NJ that serves decent Hakka noodles & Chilli chicken. Also, the owner is polite, I’ve seen him build this place up since Covid times and am so proud of the consistent food they have been serving. I also recommend their hyderabadi chicken, chicken angara, aloo papdi chaat, chicken keema dosa. Masala soda & filter coffee are great too. From the bake shop, highly recommend their rasmalai fusion cake.

Yelp
Just my default dining space when I know I want Indian food but not quite sure what. Ordered a bunch of stuff (yes, for one) and enjoyed everything. The paneer bhurji was particularly delicious.

Yelp
My go to Indian Restaurant on Oak Tree Road. Has a bit of everything and the food is consistent. Butter chicken, chicken Tikka masala, and Dosa here is very good. They also serve pretty good pizza with a Indian twist !! They do charge extra 3% if you use a Credit card so bring cash to save a little bit of money. Also they have plenty of parking in the front and back of restaurant too. Seating is ample too , you can bring a group here easily and be comfortable. Solid Indian Restaurant whenever I crave it.

Yelp
I visited Moghul Express half an hour after it opened on a Sunday afternoon. We were allowed to sit anywhere we wanted and the staff was extremely helpful with the menu. When he saw me looking things up, he came over to explain the menu items and whether or not they were spicy. We ordered the veg samosas, masala dosa, and tandoori paneer makhani pizza. The samosas came out first and they were crispy with a filling that had a nice kick to it. Everything about the masala dosa was really good, from the dosa itself, the insides, and the curry. I also really liked the pizza which looked amazing when it first arrived. The crust was nice and thick and the pizza itself had slices of paneer along with onions and bell pepper. Instead of tomato sauce there was makhani curry (i think) which was a nice replacement. The pizza was relatively large, so i took away the other half to go. We got two mango lassis to go which were really good in the beginning and became quite sweet near the end. I noticed a lot of takeout orders while I was there so it seems to be popular for that. Overall, I really enjoyed my time at Moghul Express and would come back!

Yelp
Pretty standard Indian food...north, south fusion along with indo-chinese. Being on oak tree rd...this has to compete with a lot of Indian restaurants...so having indo Chinese, North Indian and South Indian cuisine all together under one roof along with indianized pizza is a nice edge.

Yelp
Delivery Order: Definitely one of the better options for Indian Food. For someone who gets disappointed time and again with my Biryani Orders, this was a welcome relief. Briyani and Noodles both tasted pretty good. I have been to the Edison branch in person, and the taste seems to be consistent here.

Maria S.

Yelp
worst food taste butter chicken and biryani (dont know who makes goat biryani sweet and tasteless) ... Please don't go to this restaurant there are many other restaurants. Starters- good, but curry and biryani are not recommended

Yelp
My go-to anytime we want to grab Indian food to go. The food is well packed and consistently tastes great.

Yelp
I like their vada pavs and few other stuff .. nice and quick service . Located right on heart of oak tree road . Parking is a bit cramped . .. tough to get parking in peak hours or weekends . I generally order to-go and eat at home . Good experience overall .. ambience is ok. Too crowded sometimes

Yelp
1/1 Ambience; 1.5/2 Food + Beverages; 1/1 Service; 0.5/1 Value My friend and I visited Moghul Express for a no-frills quick snack. The ambience is very casual and family friendly with a spacious, bright, well lit interior. On a Saturday afternoon, the restaurant was really full, but we were still seated and served immediately. The service is fast, efficient, and friendly. We were served within minutes of ordering, so if you're in a hurry, this seems like a great spot to grab a meal. We shared a gobi (cauliflower) manchurian from the appetizer menu. It was the perfect amount of spicy, savory and stickiness, served sizzling hot and fresh. The gobi was soft and well seasoned on the inside, but I wish it was crispier on the outside. Of note, the serving size ran smaller than expected relative to the price ($12). In all, Mogul Express provides solid grub at decent enough prices, and I would definitely come back to try other dishes from a very extensive menu that caters to non-veg and vegetarian eaters alike.

Yelp
We were in Woodbridge to meet our cousin and if you are here, of course we will feast ourselves in one of the restaurants from the Mehtani group. (bw they have honored Mehtani by naming one of the streets after that, great to see that) Rightly placed on the oak street where you can find tons of options, We chose Moghul express due to both Indian and Indo-Chinese options, also We did not have much time in hand. We got the table and settled ourselves. it was a weekday evening and it was packed. can't imagine how it would be on weekends. We ordered- 1) Chicken Hakka Noodles - little blunt in taste, but good 2) Veg chili Garlic noodles (we asked for chicken one and asked can they make it without mixing egg due to allergy issues), they could not oblige the request, anyway - it was good 3) Chicken Drums of heaven - finally found the good chicken lollypops. 4) Home-style chicken curry - ( we asked what is their best chicken dish in the main course, and the server suggested this- but nope, I would rate it 2.5/5. 5) Garlic Naan, Lachha paratha, and Tandoori roti - good apart from Chicken (home style) - everything was good. Ambiance- it's good, this is not fine dining though. by giving it a glance, it looks like everything running in an automated way. Service - yeah, it was good too. nothing to complain about there. We also tried their dessert, specially rasmalai and chocolate milk cake. Wow!! I am glad Moghul express coming to the Parsippany area. Welcome..!!

Yelp
Mogul is king of Indian Chinese in NJ . Time tested and consistent , They never goes wrong . Veg Hakka noodles , Chili Garlic fried rice with side of Coriander Garlic chicken & Veg Manchurian gravy . No description or detailed write-up needed . Hakka Noodles , Fried rice and the Chick & Veg gravy ,complemented one another with perfect blend of the sauce , spices and oil . Nothing was overwhelming or overpowering . Appetizing Hot and tasty food served hot in their brightly lit restaurant. Their Oak tree road location also has a Pizza section with variety of Indian toppings . We shared couple of Indian street food dishes Samosa Chaat & Bhel puri. Both were finger licking good . Chased it with Masala soda to wash it all down .. Don't think twice .. Walk in or call to place your takeout order .

Yelp
Great tasting food even though we were surprised that it looked more like a takeout place. Had goat curry and pizza with chicken tikki masala. Lot of food and good service.

Yelp
This is my FAVORITE Indian restaurant! They have amazing North Indian, South Indian, and Indochinese dishes, the BEST mango lassi I ever had anywhere (and I've had many!), and they also have an adjacent Indian sweets bakery on the same premises as well. Food is always fresh and delicious, has that comforting homemade quality, is served in generous portions, and the service is always timely and friendly as well. Highly recommended!

Yelp
Tasty fast casual Indian restaurant, which is also connected with a bakery and Papa Pancho's pizzeria. I haven't been by here in a long time, and was pleasantly surprised to see such nice, modern updates to their indoor space. I stopped by for a weekend lunch and it was quite busy! We aren't as familiar with all the menu items, but the servers were friendly and helped answer any questions we had. We actually ordered off the app via the QR code at our table, and everything arrived quickly. Each dish was flavorful, and spice levels can be adjusted to your liking - I especially loved the samosa channa chaat and huge plain dosa, but I'd happily order everything again. Servings were generous and we brought leftover tandoori paneer makhani pizza home, which was still good the day after when we heated it back up. We also got dessert takeout from the bakery (rasmalai tres leches and mango tres leches), and they were fantastic little sweet treats. Looking forward to coming back again!

Yelp
Find a better way to make money and not making a fool of your customers. We are used to eating out and 99.99 % of the restaurants charge a convenience fee for a party of 6 or more. Who charges a fee for a party of 4 because in Moghul Express a party of 3 is normal and anything above is a large party. Which average family has 3 people. There's a limit to greed!
google avatar

Komal K.

Yelp
Mogul express has to be one of the best places on oak tree road. We actually like it more than Moghul. The pizza shop connected to it has great Desi pizzas. Moghul express has very good butter chicken and malai kofta. I've only done takeout from here so cannot comment on the service.

Yelp
I used to go to Moghul express in Iselin and found it to be great. Recently they took over a local restaurant on Stelton Road and my daughter took us there for father's day. I had the Tandoori Lamb and my wife had a chicken curry. Both were amazing. Service was attentive, quick and helpful. Bathroom was clean. There used to be a place across the street (a bit) called Sunshine. It was wonderful but when the owner passed away, it took a quality dive and I believe went out of business. Have great Indian food in Piscataway is great, while I can't afford to go crazy at Delhi Express in Edison every week. This is a worthy alternative. I only wish they had the indo/Chinese dumplings that they serve at the oak tree road location. Will definitely be adding this place to our short list of Indian favorites!
google avatar

Sonali P.

Yelp
Food and service is good most of time. This is a place where you get all different cuisine in Indian like panjabi, South Indian and Indian Chinese. It's a simple express restaurant. There is no ambience.

Chandel M.

Yelp
Coming for 20 plus years still the best place in town!! Not sure how some place can maintain the quality of food.
google avatar

Dewan A.

Yelp
Amazing spot. 1) They have the best modern Indian fusion items ever. 2) I for sure recommend their butter chicken pizza. Amazing! 3) Their desserts are out of this world. Their chai tiramisu, gulab jamun cake, ras malai tres leches cake, and chai Brulé are out of this world. MUST GET/TRY!

Saminder S.

Yelp
My daughter has a severe egg allergy. Today, we were at the Mughal Express restaurant in Edison, and I specifically mentioned that my daughter is allergic to egg. Despite this, they served her Hakka noodle dish with eggs. When we asked if it was egg, they insisted it was chicken. However, it was very obviously scrambled eggs. As a result, my daughter had a severe allergic reaction, and we had to take her to urgent care. I was shocked that the manager did not come immediately to address the situation and did not apologize. Our waiter did not provide any assistance or admit fault. Instead, the manager, Nitin, and the waiter argued with us, claiming the eggs were chicken. The only thing the manager did was say he wouldn't charge for the dish. I called him from urgent care, and only then did he apologize. Please be cautious--this restaurant is extremely careless with food allergies. This was a major health concern.

Yelp
Great selection on Indian cuisine. I like their chicken angara, dahi ke kebab, lamb seekh kebab, baigan ka salan. Would like to try their fusion food which seems to be quite favorite of patrons here. Also they serves fresh personal sized pies, have tried their cheese pie and it was ok, not great not bad. Their desert options are great. Would like to visit again, have to try their other offerings and keep this review updated.

Yelp
I'm not Indian and rarely eat Indian food, but being from Louisiana, I love my meals to be spicy hot and for it to bite back. Out with two Indian friends we all went here for the first time. The Chilli Paneer Dry was outstanding! Can't say enough about the presentation, ingredients and spiciness. We also shared the Podi Idil, Schezwan Fried Rice Vegetarian, Paneer Makhani, Baingan Bharta, Naan, plain rice and washed it all down with Marsala sodas, plus Madras coffee at the end. I recommend it all. Very good and very fresh. Waitstaff was prompt and polite and the restaurant clean. I recommend Moghul Express to all Indians and non-Indians alike.

Yelp
We've been to Moghul today (had takeout food from here multiple times). We ordered samosa chana chat (good), drums of heaven (must try), chicken fried rice (must try), garlic sauce chicken (average). Lime soda and masala sad were good. The deserts from the bake shop are good too. My favorite is rasmalai tres leches. The service is super quick because they have a wait time about 20-30 mins for any guest. They can start taking reservations to avoid customer wait time. I would appreciate it if the servers don't make us feel rushed to finish food and leave. These are the two things that I wasn't quite pleased with. Other than that, this place has amazing pizzas and Indo-Chinese food.

Eliza A.

Yelp
I gave this restaurant 5 stars nearly 2 years ago. Now I am giving it two stars. The food is still just as good as it was 2 years ago, but the prices have gone up significantly. I am aware food prices have been going up everywhere, but this restaurant in particular has also significantly reduced their portion sizes. Any non-veg main dish has 3-4 cubes of meat drowned in sauce. That is barely the equivalent of one chicken thigh. The samosa chaat that used to have 3-4 samosas mixed in now has ONE samosa. and the prices have only gone up. I will not be ordering from this restaurant again unless their portion sizes go back up and their prices stop increasing.
google avatar

Amit G.

Yelp
Ordered Mexican pizza, dosa, Monchow soup and chili paneer. Except Monchow soup (good) and Dosa (bad Sam had though), chilli paneer was cold inside and had to leave pizza as got stomach ache and eventually kids vomited. They old had pizza and Chilli Paneer Dry. Horrible experience (first ever bad one in Edison since moving from CA to NJ 6 months back)

Avyukt P.

Yelp
The food is good; I like their quick service times as it takes little time for your food to come. Though the Ambiance is lacking in some factors, the constant Bollywood music always sets the mood for an enjoyable meal.
google avatar

Nidhi P.

Yelp
This place has a lot of different types of options in both veg and non veg categories. We have been here multiple times and have tried dosas, paneer tikka, veg noodles, chicken noodles, pizza and variety of curries. Everything is delicious. It gets very crowded on weekends so if you are looking to go for dinner better plan to go around 6 and you will find a table without any wait else be prepared to wait atleast 30 mins
google avatar

Lisa C.

Yelp
Edison has some of the best kept secrets Indian Restaurants. With so many delicious options to choose from, Moghul Express is my go to with parking attendants to help with the flow of the cars. Amazing fast service and the whole menu is also available for take out. The reviews I read about the dosa were all true!! Both delicious and impressive presentation of the Dosa standing up on the plate. Have to come back when I have room for dessert!

Rajat m.

Yelp
We stopped for lunch and ordered soup dosa pizza and kebabs. Soups were bland, kebabs were juicy, dosa was crispy and pizza was delicious. Service was prompt and friendly. Prices are a little on higher side for fast Indian food. Ambience is what one would expect for a fast food restaurant.
google avatar

Ronak P.

Yelp
I went for dine-in and tried veg momos that's the biggest mistake you want to do as they are FROZEN please avoid it. Other thing I observed is the waiters are pretty cheap. They will keep looking at you and your table which doesn't give a pleasant experience

Eugene T.

Yelp
Being a newb to Indian food, I've only had it a handful of times. I mainly stick with what I am comfortable with: naan, chicklen tikka masala, and butter chicken. I must say, the tikka masala here is quite good. Not overwhelming with spices and was easy on the palate. Great for Indian food newbs like myself. Garlic naan was excellent. LOTS, I mean LOTS of fresh garlic! Love the ambiance of the restaurant. Clean and modern aesthetics. Staff was attentive and polite. My only question is, I've heard of "Indo Chinese" food before. Mainly from Chinese diaspora living on the Indian/Chinese border. But is chinese food actually served at other Indian restaurants? Because i was shocked to see so many Chinese food items on their menu! Not that it was a bad thing! Definitely will be coming back here!
google avatar

Prasanth J.

Yelp
Authentic North Indian food. Place is bit crowded but food was excellent! Variety of dishes!

Jithendar S.

Yelp
ordered a chicken gobi manchurian specially requesting it to be mild. what I got was lets say a 'SPICY GRENADE' , so disappointed !!. This is one restaurant i will avoid on oak tree

Al S.

Yelp
Food is better than most; service was good. Ambiance is lacking...look is more like a fast food restaurant. Place is clean.
google avatar

Jay L.

Yelp
Ordered take out! Food was great. Best was the hydrabadi chicken. Usual paneer and chicken dishes was great. Naan was nice and soft. Rice was a little hard for our liking but that's the typical basmati rice.
google avatar

Vignesh M.

Yelp
really good good overall. Bhel puri, hakka noodles and rava dosa were rated 5/5 (sambhar was rated excellent by my mom, which is saying something) chicken 65 was good but could have been slightly spicier masala soda, lassi were all on point
google avatar

Aditi R.

Yelp
This place has gotten a wonderful modern makeover! The staff is quick and efficient and we always get seated right away. The food has always been good though. It's my go to spot for all the desi food I crave whenever I go to Edison. Must get the chicken 65 and Drums of Heaven ! Also their mango lassi is the best. Fun fact: I judge a Indian restaurant based off their mango lassi and this one doesn't disappoint!

Mauricio C.

Yelp
Good and tasty food, service is a bit disorganized and at times hectic. Ambiance is like having indian food in a pizza place (literally). Order pickup and you will not regretted, food is great and do not have to deal with hectic environment.
google avatar

Shreya P.

Yelp
Moghul express is one of our top options everytime we go to edison! The indochinese is excellent and love the butter chicken! Very quick and prices are reasonable!
google avatar

Mark G.

Yelp
Had lunch here today and will definitely come back when I am in the area. This is a casual fast Indian restaurant that serves good food. We ordered the malai chicken kabob, tika masala and sag paneer. Everything tasted fresh and was plentiful for two people. For me the sag paneer seemed to have a lot of butter so I was not crazy about it. However, the cheese was great in it. The malai was not overly done and was very good, and the tika masala was very well balanced with the rice. I would have liked to have had more clean drink options than purified water but that's just me. The place is very bright and clean and service was very good. If you are in the area and don't have a go to Indian restaurant for lunch, this is a winner for sure.
google avatar

Khyati V.

Yelp
Really good Indo Chinese food. Loved the paneer Tikka as well. No alcohol is served.
google avatar

DJ S.

Yelp
Incredible service and meal. Family friendly outdoor dining with all hospitality taken very seriously. Upon entering the parking lot until our departure , the team at Moghul Express was on point. A parking lot attendant, strong social distancing, and hand sanitizer stations placed around the property show consumers that this facility really cares. On to the food: 9 of us ate the following: Appetizers: Pizza ( for the kids ) ... they loved it. Pani Puri (for grandma) ... super good. Malai Chicken Tandoori Paneer Assorter Veggie Pakora Aloo Papdi Chaat Veggie Manchurian Amritsari Fish (excellent) Main Course: Butter Chicken Malai Kofta Palak Paneer Assorted breads and rice All in all , a solid meal we ate at 4pm. 16 hours later I'm still full. Thanks To the team at Arora Hospitality. We will be back.

Soma A.

Yelp
my service dog wasn't allowed inside by management, then we were asked to sit outside (it's 26 degrees) and we decided to leave. They were quite rude about it despite my animal sitting in a travel kennel.
google avatar

Anderson D.

Yelp
Love the paneer makhani, daal, garlic naan, hakka noodles, chili noodles, gobi manchurian. Samosas, chaat, and mango lassi are very good. 4 stars only because they've messed up take out orders pretty egregiously before or had ridiculous wait times.

Cyrille M.

Yelp
Terrible attitude. Not worth it when the staff and manager are rude. I went there to place a catering order but was turned away because they're too busy... I've never been to a restaurant that turns business away. Not to mention how long I was ignored when they clearly saw me standing there by the register waiting to speak to someone. The manager and the staff walked by me and ignored me numerous times before the manager finally turned around to talk to me only to turn me away because he's too busy to write down an order. To note, I also called prior to going there in person and was told they would call me right back but they did not.
