"Alexis Moko was born in Versailles and travelled often from his country of birth to London. Though connections brought him to reside in Kyoto, his native language, culture and ingredients are all foreign to the area. It all began when, feeling disheartened, he cycled through Ōhara and encountered food producers who reignited his ambition. Vegetables and game from Ōhara are prepared in traditional fashion. Wonderful ambiance friendly service and delicious food really made this one of the nicest places we ever had lunch at. The whole team made the dining experience easy going and the food was absolutely fabulous. Good and extensive wine menu. overall if you're a fan of the french cuisine this restaurant is definitely worth the stop.

This was the best meal of my entire trip to Japan. I emailed them the day of asking for a reservation because another hotel guest recommended this place. I’m so happy I did and they were able to accommodate me. The service was phenomenal. The team worked in sync and altogether made this the most memorable meal of my trip. The wine pairings were thoughtful and appropriate. The flavors were so balanced with a mix of French and Japanese. I cannot say enough about this place. Everyone spoke English and there was no need for google translate. They even helped me get a taxi when I left. Bravo to the chef and team! Hurry and visit before you won’t be able to make a reservation.

Outstanding service and really excellent French food utilizing Japanese ingredients. The open concept kitchen was utilized really well, allowing us to interact with the chef on a constant basis. I don’t think I’ve ever had a Michelin starred chef refill my water glass and explain every single dish before tonight. Truly a memorable experience.

Four of us had dinner at the bar with a view of the kitchen. The decor is subdued, with a beautifully crafted bar top and great lighting. The service was spot on, seemingly relaxed, which means that it is well rehearsed. The food itself was beautiful and superb, with a complicated balance of flavors. MOKO deserves its Michelin star and is a bargain to boot. Given the chef’s responsible food sourcing, it deserves a green bib along with its star. Go. Eat. Drink. Enjoy.

Firstly, the ambience is homely cosy as the restaurant is in a beautifully restored machiya with a wonderful garden. The service team was welcoming and convival. They also professionally printed the dinner menu specifying all the sources of the produce. Chef Moko's cooking was superb with local seasonal produce. Every dish was on point from amuse bouche to desserts, not forgetting his homemade sourdough. He not only dry-aged meats but also the fish to coax out intricate flavours and texture too. Wine pairing was decent too. Indeed an enjoyable four hour dinner.

God this place is incredible! Wonderful staff, beautiful environment, amazing food. From start to finish it was just so good. Counter service, with the kitchen in full view you could see how they prepare every dish. Wine pairing was wonderful. The Chef and staff were courteous and friendly. I even saw them whip up a dish for another guest’s kid that was just adorable. I can’t even say one dish was a highlight, when I loved them all. Also, I wish I could have brought back some butter by the gallon home, or maybe the pistachio cream. Also!! Price was super reasonable for 2, at this caliber of restaurant. I have definitely paid 2x more, at restaurants half the quality. I wish nothing best for the MOKO team, and cannot wait to come again and again each time I visit Kyoto.

Amazing experience! A small restaurant where you feel right at home. Moko combines French cuisine with Kyoto-sourced ingredients. Beautifully designed interior, gourmet food, great wine pairing with French wines and top notch, very attentive service! All ingredients are locally sourced and prepared (e.g. cured) inhouse. We also chatted a bit with the staff and the head chef and learned many things about Kyoto, France and their respective cuisines. Very highly recommended!

Absolutely amazing! The best food we had in Japan. From start to finish it was incredible. Even ingredients that I normally don't like tasted divine. Chef and staff are welcoming and looked after us really well.
