The best place to take a date, I celebrated my twp year anniversary with my girl and we had a blast. The food is amazing, we had noodles, lamb chops and alot of sushi. The sushi chefs outdid themselves with the quality of the rice and fish. The service was top notch, Raymond should be promoted immediately. He made our nigh extra special, and made us feel like we were royalty. 10/10 the best restaurant in the area!

Ehhh. I tried to give this place a try but I doubt I’d come back. It is extremely overpriced. The appetizers were frozen, stuff you can find in Walmart. The orange chicken was good but $20 for no sides? And you can’t order a side of fried rice, only a large portion for $15. It’s so tight in there. The drinks were good and strong. The calamari was ATROCIOUS. Told the waitress I’d like to send it back and get something else instead, she literally sat and went back and forth with me asking me what I didn’t like about it. I just kept it.

Look, I’m a man who appreciates a bit of mystery—like how tea tastes so much like hot brown water yet remains a national treasure—but walking into Mon Jin Lau felt a bit like trying to find a contact lens in a movie theater during the previews. It’s dark, folks. We’re talking "casing shadows about" dark. The only thing fighting back the gloom were these tiny table lights that were doing their absolute level best, but they barely gave the menu a fighting chance. Add in a temperature that was on the slight chilly side, and I felt less like I was out for dinner and more like I was a character in a moody spy novel waiting for a handoff. The Starting Lineup If there’s one thing coach and I agree on, it’s that a strong start can save a game. And boy, did the appetizers show up to play. The Shrimp & Scallops: These were the absolute bright spots of the evening. If the rest of the meal had this kind of hustle, we’d be looking at a championship season. Fresh, flavorful, and they actually knew their way around a seasoning rack. The Main Event Then came the Mongolian Chicken. Now, it looked the part—dressed up and ready for the gala—but the taste just didn’t have that "believe" spirit. It was, to be honest, a bit unimpressive. It’s like a striker who has all the fancy footwork but can’t quite find the back of the net. It wasn’t bad, mind you; it just didn’t make me want to stand up and cheer. The Final Whistle At the end of the day, Mon Jin Lau is like a pre-season friendly in a cold stadium. I’m glad I showed up to see what the fuss was about, and I enjoyed those appetizers enough to give 'em a high-five, but I’m not in a rush to return for a rematch. It’s a solid "try it once" experience. But for now, I think I’ll head back to where the lights are bright and the chicken has a bit more heart. Final Verdict: A bit too much shadow, not enough soul.

Was in tonight for the first time. My experience was beyond excellent. My waitress Kaitlyn was great from start to finish. I love Sea Bass, she told me their Chilean Sea Bass was excellent and was she spot on. My friend got the Sizzling Hong Kong Filet and it was a 10/10 in my friends book. Kaitlyn made us feel welcomed and her knowledge of the menu was very helpful for our first time. We’ll be back again, she has some new regulars now!

Last night I had a birthday dinner and it was my first time coming there. I loved the atmosphere of the restaurant but the service that you guys provided me and my guest was horrible!!! The waiter barely came back my egg rolls had no shrimp. Half of our plates came late to the table, so some of us were eating and others weren’t. On top of that one out of guest crab cakes were so burnt you could see and taste it. After asking for another one the manager(older gentleman) had the nerve to come out and say, “you can have something else but we’re not making another one because that was cooked to perfection and there not burnt with a direct attitude” when everybody looking clear as day and see those damn crab cakes were burnt on the top of that, when asked why not? you had the nerve to repeat what you said. Let me tell you something I worked in fine dine restaurants for many years I’m pretty sure I know that’s how crab cakes are suppose to come out and taste, and I know how service should be given and that’s not how you give service and that’s not how you talk to people . How dare you tell somebody something like that knowing you’re in the wrong, on top of that when I asked for the head chef instead I was told, unless you know how speak Chinese that’s not possible. So make that make sense how are you and everybody else communicating with him if there’s a language barrier. SMH you just didn’t want to make another one, gave poor service, gave everyone a hard time and pissed us all off, especially for me because it was my birthday. Everyone sushi platters weren’t event platted well. Very sloppy work. Seating was jammed tight in a corner, we barely had any leg room. Also my sushi was pretty decent but I should’ve had my own plate, instead I’m sharing a plate with somebody but everybody else had there own individual plates!!!! Worst experience ever I’m not coming back thanks for ruining my birthday experience.

So I got the vegetable Lo mein without the bean paste. I’m missing like four ingredients in this! I’m missing the red bell peppers, the onions, the bean sprouts and the carrots. I specifically bought this dish because I was craving vegetables and I’m missing half the dishes ingredients. Very disappointed. Also adding this a few minutes later, but some of noodles are burnt too…

Had a Christmas Eve dinner here with my family last night. It was MY first time (others in my family had been before) and I will definitely be back! The service was great, our waitress was excellent…very helpful and knowledgeable when we had some questions. The food came out quickly and was DELICIOUS. Everything was so fresh, flavorful, vibrant and portions were perfect. I’ll be back soon!

I had a super good experience sitting at the bar. This place has cool vibes. I had a Thai Basil drink that was delicious and the Chin Chin noodles dish. It was so good!!!

the sushi was good and spicy the fried rice was excellent especially with soy sauce! the pad thai was also good and so was the duck. the inside was well decorated

The vibe is always nice and relaxed but upbeat. The server and hostess were very nice. We had the Zen roll, sizzling rice soup to start. The roll was okay nothing special. The soup was great, very flavorful. The Chilean Sea Bass in Banana leaf didn't come out in the banana leaf but it tasted amazing with the curry sauce. The vegetables were cooked to with great snap to them. The Hong Kong sizzling filet was very tasty. The Sapporo Beer was better than the vodka tonic, it was ice cold in A frosted mug. Perfect

6-5-2024 Came with hubby and friend. several friends and family told us it was great, but I found the food a little "meh". The atmosphere was OG Chinese restaurant, nothing bad about it, just a little tatty. I got the Egg Foo Young and it was on the salty side. My husband got a filet and I think he liked it . Our server was good altho didn't seem to know much about the menu.

Wow, has Mon Jin Lau gone down hill. This will be the last time I ever go there. First off I have been going here for over 30 years and more many of those years go 2+ times a week. The food quality has dropped. They handed us dirty paper menu, really? Disgusting. Mon Jin Lau has now even stopped rice with their main entry dishes. So, the Hunan spicy chicken is swimming in sauce with no rice to absorb it. Gross. Moo Shu Pork also swimming in sauce. Sorry to say this legendary restaurant has hit the wall.

Love this old school place. The sunken bar is my go to spot. I come here for dishes from my youth. Love the food, spicey mustard is spicy. Great sake, it will catch up to you. They take reservations which is great.

We came here to celebrate my future daughter in law's birthday and she chose it because it had a lot of vegetarian and seafood options and a great reputation. For appetizers we got calamari and lettuce wraps. Both were absolutely delicious. For dinner I got the Spicy Vegetable Udon Noodle which was delicious but I didn't think it was very spicy. Other dinners ordered were almond boneless chicken, sesame chicken and lots of sushi. Everyone loved their dinners and brought home leftovers. When the waitress came and asked us if we wanted any dessert, we all said no, but I commented that one of the people in our group was having a birthday so she brought out a bowl of ice cream with a sparkler in it and a fun mask that the birthday girl put on for photo purposes and you can see it in my photographs All in all, this was a lot of fun and great treat

Sis and I love this restaurant. Not a close spot to either of us but when in Troy we make it a point to dine here. Friendly service and the food comes out fresh and hot! Nice ambiance too, would make a great date night spot.

The service was great but the food was mediocre. No one at our table liked the food. The calamari felt frozen and reheated. We've been here in the past and it appears that there food quality declined significantly while there prices stayed the same

The food was awful and over priced! I got the small combo 9pc and it was a garden bar! Not with the money at all. I felt like I ate an appetizer. Then I order the seafood war bar. Sounded good, then I realized it had 3 shrimp, looked liked slicer scallops on it and fake lobster prices on it. Good thing I didn't take clients hear or I would have lost the deal. Now, I find out on Wednesday nights they turn it into a dance place. It was packed with 20 to 30 some year olds dressed to get, well hooked up. No WAY would I EVER come back here!!!!

Simply one of the best overall restaurants in Metro Detroit. I wish I could eat here everyday. The best Crispy Seshwan Squid and the Happy Hour offerings are awesome with good prices.

We went on Wednesday night and had the best time there. The food is really good entrees and sushi. 9:30-10pm they bring out a DJ. My friends and I enjoyed our time at MJL. We will be back! I think Bryan came to talk to us to see if we needed anything he was nice.

Stopped in for early dinner. I ordered a Dragon Roll and Almond boneless chicken with white rice. The portions are huge. Forgot to get a pic..Everything had good flavor. The sushi was fresh. Our server Nikki was very attentive, she did a great job. The pricing was fair. The decor is a little dated. Hasn't changed much since my last visit, I see an update or overhaul in the future. I remember this being a bustling place years ago. Seems like it's lost its luster a bit. The food is still delicious. My buddy seemed to enjoy his meal can't remember what it was, some sort of chicken and broccoli combination. I will return again for the nostalgia of the place.

Let me preface by saying this 5-star rating is taking into consideration that we are talking about a sushi spot in Troy, Michigan. It's not a $200/pp omakase at a 10-person seating chefs table in Manhattan 5-star, but for sushi in the suburbs of Detroit I was very impressed! I was staying next door at the courtyard on a business trip, and have always had trouble finding a light healthy dinner when I'm up in the Warren/Troy area for work. Was excited I could walk here, and definitely find a healthy option. Right when I walked in I was pleasantly surprised by the beautiful interior, and how busy they were for a Tuesday night. The bartender wasn't super nice or really helpful, but they were busy and she seemed like she works 7 days a week or something so whatever. I ended up getting the Chin Dynasty which was several pieces of sushi and a spicy tuna roll. The portions were much bigger than what you get in NYC, and everything was super fresh. They had a good sake list and a cheap tiger beer to complete everything I need for a sushi for one dinner. If this place was in Brooklyn I think it would do well even with all the competition. Next time I'm in the area for work, I will definitely be back. They actually made the courtyard hotel next door better just because they are here for a dinner option!

Wow! Amazing place! The Ambiance is just beautiful! The Food was simply Amazing! The coconut glass noodle seafood sauce is so good! The sushi was delicious! So impressed!

If you are looking for fusion sushi this place might be it for you. The sushi looked amazing and well decorated, it was fresh. The flavour was there but not for my palate, it was confusing and didn't have the greatest taste. The best was crab Rangoon. The server was nice but they appeared to be rushing things. The lighting was calm and it's well decorated. They were extremely busy, with a lot of seating but too tight, it wasn't comfortable.

So, perhaps this establishment could use an update in decor and flooring but there's still plenty of atmosphere because of all the people who flock to this excellent spot in Troy for chinese fusion cuisine. I have not had the pleasure of so many vegetables or more flavor in so many different dishes anywhere else in Detroit or dare say I, even in NYC where I now live. The fried salt and pepper calamari reigns supreme, and the seafood war bar is worth its price. Long live Mon Jin Lau!

Food is consistently good. Service is very hit or miss. Tables are very close together...to the point where super close to the table behind you. Wednesdays are a different vibe so beware. Best place for Chinese in the area for me.

This is my absolute favorite sushi spot. The happy endings happy hour is amazing. So much ambiance. Always busy and fun. Servers are wonderful! Get the Godzilla roll & the salmon on the beach. They are delicious!

My friend and I were recently here for Shanghai Wednesday. It was crowded, but we had reservations and did not wait long for our table. So let's address how close the tables are to one another. Seriously, some tables are so close it might as well be communal seating. Our waitress came over promptly, and I ordered a tasty Shanghai cosmo. We had crab Rangoon and the King Kong and Salmon on the Beach rolls to start our meal. For my entrée, I had the seafood war bar. The flavors of this dish were great and it could have been perfect, but the rice was not thoroughly cooked. It was crunchy and in clumps throughout. I only ate a small amount before having it returned to the kitchen. Overall, we enjoyed this second visit, but hope to return when it isn't as busy.

The food was delicious. Any of the noodle dishes are great, even for picky kids! The cocktails are also delicious, pricy, but I'd say worth it for the taste and the service! Everyone there is very sweet and welcoming. We will be back!

Sushi was fabulous. They accepted our 10 pm reservation knowing the kitchen closed at 10:15 and restaurant at 10:30 when I put in the notes days earlier we were seeking to celebrate a birthday. Frustrating to be rushed in and out, really diminished any experience possible. Horrible first impression.

First time trying out Mon Jin Lau and an overall great experience. When we told the hostess it was our first visit she welcomed us warmly and we were seated immediately (5:30pm on a Saturday and already quite busy). Our waitress was very attentive, and I appreciate that a gentleman came around w water several times during our meal. Crab Rangoon was good, and I really appreciated the 4 sauces that were brought to our table. My seaweed salad was bland and a little fishy--most likely from the crab? on top--the only thing that prevented a 5 review. My sesame chicken was FANTASTIC. I'm used to overly sweet sauces, but there's was a perfectly blended sauce w hints of sesame oil. The chicken was fried perfectly in panko breading and sesame seeds to (reminded me of katsu); crispy and so tasty w bites of rice and the veggies underneath (peapod, broccoli, squash). I loved it! My husband wound up eating half of mine too. It was both of our favorite parts of the meal! My husband had the Mongolian beef, and while the meat was cooked perfectly, he was not a fan of how sweet the sauce was and also how soupy the dish was overall. Overall we really enjoyed the ambiance and definitely want to go back to try out their sushi.

We decided to sit outside because it was such a beautiful day. Limited outdoor seating but was nice. Our server checked in often and was helpful when asked about dishes and drinks. The food was pretty good. Will definitely be a return customer.

What a unique spot!! I almost don't want to share because this restaurant is worth gate-keeping! Such a fun atmosphere and interesting layout to the restaurant. Prices are sooo reasonable especially for portion size. Their noodles dishes are delicious - that's what I want to go back for asap. Service was fantastic. One of the owners made my table feel so special and welcomed us so brightly as first timers! (Thanks Brian!) All of the staff was very nice. Here's the secret: every Wednesday night (around 10pm) this place transforms from an upscale Asian restaurant to a dance club with a DJ! It was so fun - best ladies night I've had in forever.

I love this sushi! I ordered two rolls and they were the perfect amount of food. So yummy and easy to eat. Cool decor and great vibe. The service was not super speedy, but I forgave that once I started eating. The shrimp tempura rolls were mouth wateringly good. I will be back!

The food had a great flavor and great quality. Overall, the service was good, but our waitress seemed to be fairly new to the job, so we never got silverware or napkins until we requested them. The place is a little bit loud and noisy and the tables are very close together. I would come back for the food and would give the service another chance.

We love the food and aleays have leftovers. We don't have many sit down Chinese restaurants at home so we enjoy having this one when we come to the Woodward Dream Cruise. I recommend you make a reservation on the weekend. Parking lot is on the smaller side considering the number of guests they can accommodate so early may be better. Carpool if you're with a group.

ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC! I am obsessed with this sushi place and it is by far my favorite. I always, ALWAYS get their salmon on the beach sushi. Every time I go to a different sushi place I try to find something similar or I ask the chef if they could try to make this place's recipe. That's how AMAZING it is. This is where I discovered my love for sushi. They always have great fried rice and their chicken is absolutely delicious as well. Their seating is also very nice and it's great for kids because the last time I went there they had a table cover where children can draw! Beautiful outdoor seating with nice greenery.

Fantastic food and neat experience with eclectic crowd. Love the sizzling rice soup which you cannot find anywhere.

Almost certain there are bed bugs there. After being in there for 30 minutes, I broke out in bumps all across my left arm. Service was horrible (I had Tammy) she never gave us the chance to order drinks, would ignore us when we called her over, and never checked in to see if the food was okay which it wasn't. My whole table hated the food. Chicken fried rice was very bland. Udon noodles had no soup. Kimichi fried rice had no flavor and tatsed nothing like kimichi. It was like they just put red food coloring in it. Pepper steak was so-so nothing amazing. Thai spicy wings only had one little spot of sauce on it, and the chicken was coney island wing dings that had no flavor. The only thing that was good was the spicy orange, which, by the way, was not spicy. I loved this place a year ago. However, it went downhill really badly. Do not recommend.

Food is not at all what it used to be. Service was Very curt and short. White person made good suggestions but seem like she just wanted us to leave as soon as possible. OUTSTANDING!! This is a beautiful restaurant that serves Asian Fusion food. We noticed, sushi, Thai and Chinese food on the menu. We were a party of 8. The restaurant is beautifully decorated and clean. The service was outstanding, as was the food. We have frequently many Asian restaurants, both locally, out of state and in other countries and rarely do you get the best of all worlds. The food, ambiance, service and prices were all excellent! They have a dining area and there are French doors lead to outside seating. There is a full sushi bar with seating and another seating area in the back. We had generous portions of food. It was very fresh and served hot. The food was reasonable priced and not overloaded with sugar. We had the Ming Shrimp appetizer, spring rolls and lettuce wraps for appetizers. Highly recommend all of those! Delicious is an understatement. All were amazing! We ordered a mix of dishes and everyone was raving about how good their food was. We had Mongolian Beef, Cashew Chicken, Salmon, Avocado Ribeye, Sesame chicken, a vegan variation of a dish and each dish was delicious! We had our water refilled numerous times, even after we had long paid our bill. The waitress gave us a generous handful of fortune cookies at the end of the meal. We are already planning another meal there soon as it was the best meal we have had in a long time. Thank you, Mon Jin Lau!!

Great service and atmosphere. The place turns into a party place at around 11pm every Wednesday. The food is good and decent serving size.

Came here for my birthday because Mon Jin Lau never disappoints! We made a reservation via the Yelp Guest Manager platform & it was needed because MJL hops. We had a delicious Pinot noir and salad with a delicious tangy sesame dressing. I had crispy orange beef with broccoli and it was perfect. My dinner companion is a vegetarian and she had a vegetarian dish (that eludes me now, but she loved it) Out waitress was attentive, the vibe was great, the food was delicious. We will definitely be back because it's a fan favorite!

It's really sad when you tell the staff you don't want to sit in the bar area just because you are by yourself and twice they try to seat you. I walked out!

I have upgraded my previous star rating to a 5 star. The food was much better than I remembered from previous years. Service was excellent. We sat at the bar and had drinks while we waited for our table. Both servers were attentive and we chatted a bit with the bar tender. I love the fact the entire bar is a low seat so it's easy to pull up in a wheelchair. We usually get the pu pu platter and it is a great combination of different foods.

Service is questionable today (ok, bad). Brought appetizers to table without silverware or napkin. Had to ask for water. Had to walk to the bar for silver ware and napkin. Had to ask waitress to clear table before bringing entree. Waitress cleared dishes and left all the food particles on the table. VERY disappointing today. I have been here many times and today is the absolute worst service I have ever received here. Hard fail today! Staff is nice and offer many excuses for their poor service today. Horrible service! ....And to make matters worse, the stupid table leg is broken and the table has been wobbling since we sat down. These are all personnel and management issues. Sounds like someone needs a new GM......

I generally don't like Asian food but I really liked this place. I got a filet with veggies and a ginger garlic sauce and it was delicious. Hubs got sushi and said it was very good. I would definitely go back!

This is my second time ordering take out. Both times the young lady at the front desk was rude. I ordered sushi both times. Food was good, but be careful since when do they put wasabi in the nigiri?? When I picked up the girl once again was standoffish. Service need work.
