The Best Affordable Hotels in Europe, According to Travel Experts

"When our daughter was only a few months old, my husband and I took her to Monachyle Mhor, in Loch Lomond & the Trossachs National Park. We had been largely confined to our small London flat since her birth, so the experience of arriving at this hotel on a mirrored loch surrounded by mountains was almost hallucinogenic. Indoors, we found a cosseting mix of warmth and luxury: sheepskins, soothing neutral tones, and a roll-top bath. And we were blown away by the restaurant, which draws on Scotland’s culinary bounty (venison from the Perthshire hills, scallops from the Isle of Mull). Doubles from $348." - Travel + Leisure Editors

"An award-winning restaurant at the foot of the Trossach Mountains, Monachyle Mhor is a must-stop for gourmands. Here, executive chef Marysia Paszkowska and head chef Graham Kerr cook exceptional Scottish fare, using ingredients sourced mainly from the restaurant’s own farm and surrounding hills. The team picks vegetables, fruit, and herbs from the kitchen garden and forages in secret spots, resulting in such refined dishes as Blackface lamb with pearl barley, chorizo, confit tomato, black olives, and capers, and Peterhead cod with baby gem lettuce, fondant potatoes, celeriac, and walnuts. If you simply can’t tear yourself away from your meal, you’ll be relieved to know that Monachyle is also a hotel, with cozy rooms, a stylish cabin, and a restored 1950s Pilot Panther showman’s wagon."

Monachyle Mhor, Trossachs National Park, Scotland - Explore & Book

"Travelling to this snug gourmet retreat is almost as much fun as arriving there: you snake four miles through woods along the edge of Loch Voil, enjoying the snow-capped peaks of the Trossachs around you. Or, if you’re feeling flush, you can arrive by sea plane on the loch in front of the stone farmhouse and down a glass of champers on the shore. There’s history here too: this glen is the home of the MacLaren and MacGregor clans, and the most notorious MacGregor of them all, Rob Roy, is buried in the churchyard nearby. Once you reach Monachyle Mhor you’ll be reluctant to stir. Inspirational gastronomy, stylish design and a personal welcome make this a truly special place. It’s run by siblings Tom, Dick and Melanie who were all raised here on what started off as a farm and is now a bijou gastro-bolthole that foodies and design aficionados traipse to from afar. The 2,000-acre farm, its produce, and the Lewis’ infectious enthusiasm remain firmly at the heart of Monachyle. Within the original stone farm buildings, 16 quiet rooms come with modern design and oodles of funk factor. We loved it here, and found it hard to leave. Or if you want to sleep even closer to nature, book one of the cabins deep in the woodland. Highs The food is superb - well presented without being fussy, and bursting with taste and inspiration The rooms are fresh and original: they'll make you smile (and sleep well) We love the eco-friendly Tiny House - a really romantic bolthole You can't get much more remote in the UK - and yet it’s only 90 minutes' drive from Glasgow and Edinburgh An atmosphere that’s intimate and friendly, yet also has a touch of Kensington sophistication Lows A large deposit is required on reservation The snug little bar is the only nightlife here, so you’ll have to provide your own Not really geared up for children, except tinies (families generally prefer sister property Mhor 84 Motel just down the road) Not for budget travellers: food and drink costs can mount up If you're on a romantic break, be aware that some double beds are singles zipped together" - Clare Hargreaves

Monachyle Mhor (Loch Lomond, UK) Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"Perched on the edge of a quiet freshwater lake, Monachyle Mhor is the elegant centerpiece of a 2,000-acre working farm in the Scottish highlands. With an upscale restaurant specializing in elevated Scottish cuisine made with ingredients produced on-site — and freshly baked scones with cream served anytime at the bar — it’s as much a low-key foodie destination as a stylish boutique hotel." - Tablet Hotels

At the end of what is essentially a 5 mile-long driveway sits a unique hotel/restaurant setup in a beautiful setting between 2 lochs. The rooms are all different and are large and well appointed. The food is amazing. This is slow food fun (like 2.5 hour dinners!). The staff and owner make you feel like family. It is incredibly informal (the best part) but extremely well done and detail oriented. Again, the food is fantastic. You feel like you have truly left it all behind. A great experience and such a warm, friendly, and funny staff.

Stayed here last weekend for my sister's wedding - there was a storm and a power cut and it could have been a disaster but the whole team at Monachyle Mhor ensured we all had an incredible time and went above and beyond for everyone and it was utterly magical. Incredible location, hotel and food. I plan to return at some point!

Enchanting Stay What an enchanting place, brimming with so much character and intrigue! From the moment we arrived, we were captivated by the beautiful details in every corner—the private lochs access, the scenic walks, and the delightful animals that make this spot feel like a hidden gem in the Scottish Highlands. The family running the hotel was incredibly hospitable, genuinely interested in every aspect of our experience, and went above and beyond to make us feel at home. A special shout-out to Donald’s caretaker/ friend (I’m sorry, I didn’t catch her name) who graciously shared her time with us, letting us brush and learn all about him—it was such a heartwarming and unique highlight! And another very special shout-out to Brandon, who so kindly helped accommodate our check in and our unexpected extra guest, my brother-in-law, who joined our Scottish vacation at the last minute. His thoughtful assistance turned what could have been a stressful situation into a seamless part of our adventure. We also enjoyed the meals at the restaurant, with everything we tried being delicious and well-prepared. That said, while the dinner experience is undoubtedly special, it may feel out of the price accessibility range for many travelers—I’d personally recommend prioritizing the bar lunch or breakfasts instead, which offers generous portions at a more affordable price point. Either way, the food added to the overall experience of our stay. We truly can’t put into words the magic of this place—you’ll need to experience it for yourself. If you’re seeking a stay that’s equal parts gorgeous, charming, and unforgettable, Monachyle Mhor is it. Highly recommend!

We spent one night here and were very impressed with the experience. Our accommodation was the Byre . As I’m from farming stock we were curious. However it was an upgraded Byre room ! Well appointed with everything one would need. We had reserved a table for Dinner. The hotel was very busy but had a friendly atmosphere. We enjoyed the tasting menu beautifully presented and served by young knowledgeable staff.

Just a lovely place to spend a wet and stormy weekend. We don’t live far away so are used to the wind and rain but we were totally spoiled by the incredible staff. Every single one a credit to the hotel. The evening food was amazing. Yes it’s pricey but worth it although and cheaper bar meal option for evenings would be good as it’s difficult to access anywhere else due to the location. Lovely, quirky room and so peaceful. We will be back!

We came specifically for the food & drink safari put on by the Monachyle Mhor hotel. This experience was phenomenal! It was so unique - combining all of my favourite things together - nature, food and drinks. The food and drinks were excellent (and the drinks were also bottomless). The views along the way were fantastic. Tom & Lisa were incredibly hospitable and made sure we had an excellent time. The tour ended back at the hotel, and we had a great sit down meal to end the day. I would HIGHLY recommend this to everyone if you are visiting the area! When we booked our rooms, we were only able to get one of the rooms in the main hotel building as the other options around the were already booked up. It was cozy and comfortable but a wee bit on the small side. The breakfast was incredible - had the wild mushroom and poached egg toast and my partner had the avocado toast. I could have eaten 10!

Wonderful elopement wedding at Monachyle Mhor. The location & rooms were amazing, but the food was next level! We had an amazing tasting menu & wine pairing with Emma who was brilliant! Customer service was excellent from all staff including the impromptu buggy ride from the owner to the lochside for our wedding. Would also highly recommend the sauna & swim experience, with great hospitality there too! Can't wait to come back for our anniversary!

I was a bit nervous about visiting a hotel often described as quirky as that sometimes means uncared for, unclean and poor service. However so many friends recommended it I had to give it a try. Wow! Absolutely amazing place. We arrived on a lovely sunny day and took a seat out in the grounds. We had a delicious lunch of soup and sandwiches (not your usual pub grub - kohlrabi and apple soup and trout with cream cheese sandwiches) We went for a walk down to the two lochs where it is stunning and peaceful. There is a sauna cabin and wild swimming is possible. |We had booked the drinks tasting session and that was so much fun! Morne was a superb guide, taking us through a range of drinks including champagne, tequila, whisky, elderberry liqueur, and a couple of cocktails. (May have missed something - memory unsurprisingly hazy!) |We then had the most fabulous dinner. It started with an amuse bouche in the lounge and then a marvellous menu interspersed with surprises. I'm coeliac and this was managed so well by the hotel - to the extent of bringing me separate butter for my GF bread! I could have had anything on the menu with the exception of one of the desserts. |Breakfast was also a triumph. Most of the produce is local and my mushrooms and poached eggs were delicious. |It was a wonderful stay and we're already planning our next visit.

Yelp
Unbelievable place. The location is one of the most beautiful places I've been. Even when the weather is poor - which is often in Scotland - the hotel and surrounding area are absolutely stunning. Go for a walk and come back to proper cocktails, fabulous food and a roaring fire. The quality of the food was really the stand out feature of this place. Clearly as much as possible is sourced locally, a lot of it actually grown on site. However, it's the refinement of Scottish classics while retaining the essence of the hearty, robust nature that's the talent. We were there for NYE where we had the 3 days package. That being the case, I can tell you that their mass catering is as good as I've seen any where else. This place is great for a couple and would be unbelievable as a wedding venue. Not to be missed.

Yelp
I would give this place more stars!!!! Amazing, amazing, amazing. Where do I start with the raving! 1) location: Perfectly located by lakes, waterfalls, hills, valleys, and mountains. It is def a small, narrow road that gets you here but worth it. 2) service: the rooms are perfect, the staff is beyond nice and awesome ammenities 3) food: fine dining at its best. From frestly hunted deer to fresh veggies grown on the geounds- just delicious. The drinks from wine to cocktails are perfect. Hidden gem away from the hustle and bustle of modern life!!! If you ever go to Scotland, this place is a MUST. I really hope to revisit some day.
