The Summer Friday Guide

"The triangle between MSG, the Empire State Building, and Bryant Park is not the absolute best place to be in the summer. The heat and humidity gets trapped between rows of tall buildings, there are jackhammers on every block, and the sidewalks are packed with tourists with trying to find the Hard Rock in Times Square. So when you take the elevator 59 floors down to leave your office on a Friday afternoon, you probably want to get off the street again as soon as possible. Walk over to the Monarch Rooftop, a big wraparound terrace with tables and couches on top of a hotel on 35th Street. You can reserve tables ahead of time, and it’s high enough up that you’ll temporarily forget about the jackhammers and lost tourists below." - matt tervooren

10 NYC Bars to Visit for MargaritaCon | Eater

"Spring evenings call for excellent views, and Monarch Rooftop is the ideal destination for checking out the Midtown skyline as it wakes up from winter. Although the crowd here skews heavily towards the blue button-down type, the food is excellent and the cocktails never disappoint. If you’re planning on catching the eclipse on April 8, they’ll be serving up house margs as part of MargaritaCon, so slap on a pair of sun-shades and sip away." - Stephen Rubino

Where To Drink With Coworkers In The Garment District

"You meant to suggest post-work drinks to just a couple of your colleagues, but you accidentally put it in the full team Slack channel, and 30 people replied with firework emojis before you could delete it. Rather than uninviting everyone from accounting, just make a reservation at the Monarch Rooftop. The huge wraparound terrace has plenty of tables and couches for the whole team to drink colorful cocktails overlooking the Empire State Building, and there’s room inside, too, in case the weather’s not ideal." - hannah albertine, bryan kim, matt tervooren

Had an amazing evening at Monarch Rooftop! The atmosphere here is truly something special — stylish, vibrant, and perfect for a night out in the city. The rooftop view is stunning, especially during golden hour and after sunset when the city lights come alive. It’s a great spot for both casual drinks and more dressed-up occasions. The cocktails were excellent — well-crafted and balanced. I ordered a few signature drinks and was impressed by the presentation and flavor. They also offer a good selection of wine and spirits. The vibe was energetic without being too loud, and the music added to the overall ambiance without overpowering conversations. The service was friendly and attentive, even though the place was busy. Staff made sure we were comfortable, and everything was brought out in a timely manner. There’s a mix of indoor and outdoor seating, but I highly recommend grabbing a spot outside if the weather’s good. Whether you’re visiting NYC or live here and want a chic rooftop experience with great drinks and views, Monarch Rooftop is definitely worth it. I’ll be back for sure!

We hosted an alumni reunion happy hour at Monarch Rooftop this past June, and from start to finish, the experience was outstanding. The service was impeccable. Liz, our waitress, went above and beyond to take care of us throughout the evening. Our guests, including the dean of the school, were thoroughly impressed with how everything turned out. There was an abundance of delicious food and drinks all night, and the atmosphere was lively yet comfortable. Everyone left feeling satisfied and already talking about returning. Monarch Rooftop truly helped make our event memorable!

Monarch Rooftop Lounge is a small but beautiful lounge bar with an open terrace in Midtown Manhattan, offering a stunning, postcard perfect view of the Empire State Building from very close, especially magical at night. The vibe is chill, friendly, and unpretentious, with guests casually enjoying their drinks and the skyline in a relaxed, social setting with a fine music selection as a soundtrack. Overall the place is not too big but this makes it perfect for a great night out with friends or a proper date. We dropped in without a reservation and were welcomed with no hassle. The cocktails (especially the “Summer In A Sip”) and wine were on point, and the baristas were fast and courteous, making the whole experience smooth and enjoyable. Monarch is a solid pick for a breezy rooftop night out with stunning views of the city buildings and fascinating lights. Prices are in line with New York City’s rooftop bars. Definitely one of the best rooftop views and cool atmosphere! Will be back again!

Google
The view from the roof top was sooo worth it. The food and drinks here are also pretty good. It can definitely get busy, but we were able to get in even without reservations. I think because of how busy it got, our drinks took a very long time to come out, but otherwise, it was a very enjoyable.

Google
We made a reservation to watch the sunset on this rooftop. We were a bit disappointed at first because the rooftop was covered since the weather was really windy and cold but our table inside was cool. Decor is really nice and cosy. We tried the sangria at happy hour charges $10. It was not homemade and didn’t find any fruits inside. Bottom line, great spot (not in winter), and don’t take the sangria ;)

Google
Definitely make reservations, without reservations you don’t even have a place to lean against or put your drink down, other than that this place is absolutely awesome! Also upscale dress code!

Google
The view and cocktails were a nice change of pace for a weekend evening, and the people dancing in the middle of the night was pretty impressive.

Google
Rooftop bar with an indoor and outdoor part - the staff wandered by periodically to help the group with more drink/food orders, but took a while between the rounds. Small tables to put food and drink on, which led to a broken glass and someone came over to clean it up immediately. On a nice day, good view of the Empire State. Some of the drinks were less than exciting, but they did give the birthday girl a free glass of champagne! Sofa wasn't too comfortable nor the little round seats with no backs. A few of us just opted to stand around instead at a high top. Dress code a touch on the more formal side according to reviews, but there were guys there with shorts and boat shoes... you get checked at the door for ID and then up an elevator with a guy using a security card (the rest of the building is a hotel).

Yelp
My friend suggested this place to meet up, but little did I know I already had it bookmarked! We walked in and the elevator was broken/not working so we had to wait for the hotel elevator to go to the rooftop. A sign would've been nice, but instead we had to ask the hostess how to get to the rooftop. Luckily we walked in and was able to get a sofa lounge table outside! No standing tables for us and the weather was perfect! A little breeze here and there and they had umbrellas for shade which actually worked so the sun wasn't blinding us. Lots of seating inside and outside! The menu is your typical rooftop bar, but they had astrological margaritas! I thought that was so cool considering I wanted to go to astrological bar in Brooklyn the previous day. Unfortunately, I don't like tequila so I didn't partake. I got both the spritz - passion fruit spritz & peach spritz. They were both refreshing as they sound! The main reason why I'm giving this rooftop bar a 5 star is the view. Absolutely stunning view of the Empire State building. I did wish we went at night, but our schedule did not permit. I was still content with what we got. They were playing house music, so this place was exactly my vibe. This was the perfect little wind down in the midst of our touristy day before we continued the night with even more touristy excursions. I loved this place so much, I recommended it to 2 of my other friends and they loved it just as much!

Yelp

Very small tables to put food and drink on, almost like little round stools to sit or put food on... which led to a broken glass and someone came over to clean it up immediately. Yelp
A gorgeous rooftop bar. Visited in March so the greenhouse is still up, they take it down in May when the weather gets better. Weather was around 50 but it was HOT and bright in the greenhouse. Make sure to bring shades. Waitstaff was very attentive and encourages you to walk around the venue to enjoy the view. We ordered: Margarita (3.5/5) - strong but flavorful Boneless buffalo wings (5/5) - a nice thick crispy layer and meaty bites. Coated in just the right amount of sauce. Exactly what you want in a buffalo bite. Monarch Beef Sliders (5/5) - oh my my these sliders were perfectly cooked and seasoned. Comes in three and sadly I had to share. Highly recommend if you want good views of the city and to visit a nice elevated rooftop bar.

Yelp
Excellent spot foot a drink after a long work day to unwind. Best to come with a companion. The Ambiance is even better than I remember and the service is great. The food bites were good and there was a great selection of items to choose from. The tequila drinks that were made for me initially was weak. I had to change drink options and went with the old fashioned to get a buzz going ...

Yelp
09/20/2024 Greetings and Salutations Attended a birthday happy hour. As with prime time things can be busy. With that said ordering and receiving food and drinks a bit delayed. However, great views of Empire State Building. Bar bites exactly that..bites as compared to other bar bites. They however were tasty. If looking for a cool chic rooftop with nice views check them out.

Yelp
The staff is very rude and miserable. It's a very nice ambience to have poor service. If you order a drink at the bar it's automatic gratuity and the drinks taste like juice. The bartenders was rude as well. I would suggest that you pregame before coming here ! Or go somewhere else, it's not worth it!
google avatar

Yelp
I'd give this place a 3.5/5 stars. We got there upon opening and after researching this spot, we decided to come here since according to their online menus, they had great "Sunday deals" which included a football oriented deal and a happy hour. When I asked the server she said that "those specials aren't active until the new year"? (we went on the last Sunday of 2024) If that was the case then that should've definitely been stated online. Bites were simple yet pricy for what you get. Cocktails were pretty good though and the view was nice.

Yelp
Amazing views and vibes! Just happened upon this spot looking for a place to chill out that wasn't too crowded but vibrant at the same time.

Yelp
I swear EVERY time I'm here I have the greatest time! Ask for Sab and Erica!! They are the BEST!!!

Yelp
On my way to work i decided to stop by the Monarch rooftop 35th st. It's really cute beautiful decor and inviting. It's inside a hotel The Herald Tower exceptional service by the bartender. The host on the bottom floor who checks ppl in needs to be more friendly. Did not greet us or welcome us at all. It was early afternoon ‍ reservation is needed at night as it gets packed. You can see downtown and the Empire State Building. Epic the prices are steep but the view is amazing so it's worth it. No street parking unless you come on a Sunday. Will come again but at night to experience it

Yelp
Had 10 PM reservations to come here for cocktails after we had dinner at Keen's Steakhouse. However the bouncer downstairs would not let us in because I had a doggy bag from Keen's...very wierd. I've never experienced that ever, but hey guess there is a first for everything. No worries, just walked a few blocks to the Virgin Hotel's rooftop bar, the Riff Raff Club, who had no issues whatsoever. This is teachable moment for the Monarch Management, and hopefully does not happen to anyone else in the future.

Yelp
I've been here before to go out and it was ok. My company threw a holiday party here for 2.5 hours on a Monday, and it was very bare minimum to the fault of my company and the rooftop itself lol. It's a rooftop that isn't as nice as some of the other ones in the city, so the cocktails aren't as expensive $20 vs $25+. They have happy hour for beer and wine. The appetizer tray wasn't good. The brussel sprouts weren't fully cooked and were a bit bland. There was hummus, pita, coconut shrimp, and fried dumplings. They have heating lamps for outside. The view is ok compared to some of others in the city.
google avatar

Tom S.

Yelp
The view is stunning if you are in the outside area. Right in the shadow of the empire state building. My wife ordered a Margarita, which was not so great, she wound up switching to beer. (For $21 we expected better, but on a rooftop bar in midtown, we expected to pay) The Monarch Pilsner was not a bad choice. The service was ok. This was back in April, they were advertising happy hour specials, however, all the seating outside was marked reserved, so you would need to drink inside at the bar. Over good experience, glad I tried it.
google avatar

Chithra V.

Yelp
Rooftop with the view of Empire state and beautifully decorated inside. My assumption in general is that food is okay at these kind of rooftop places, but this one is exceptional. Limited menu for food, but whatever they have is great, especially the edamame dumplings. Mushroom pizza was better than the mozzarella one. Barbecue wings were delicious too. The service was prompt and a reservation is needed in advance to visit this place.

Hannah B.

Yelp
The food was great, the sliders were unforgettable, the Buffalo wings too. We spent Superbowl Sunday here and had a blast. They had the perfect menu, plus the full view of the Empire State building was unbeatable. The manager, Cory and the staff were attentive and nice. Will come back again.
google avatar

Tony B.

Yelp
Great Ambience. good music smoking section. which is good cocktails were tasty terrible service. rude/impatient/ unhelpful staff great spot though. great views. great location. PRO TIP go during the week and you'll find many open tables/options. they'll tell you all the tables are reserved (they're not) and that you can only sit at bar. Just book a reservation for the closest time slot and they'll give you the table even once you're already there.

Yelp
Watched the 2024 Macys Thanksgiving Parade from the Monarch Rooftop which was a good move given it was a very wet event! Excellent service & food, a lovely atmosphere and we had a great time. Highly reccomended!

Twisha P.

Yelp
Stan the Margarita and Purple Rain, amazing drinks and the service was good. Got seated on a Friday night without a reservation and the waitress was so kind.
google avatar

Yelp
I have since gone back and had a very different experience (much better). Albeit they weren't as busy and it was in the day time.
google avatar

Angel S.

Yelp
Ambiance was very very nice on a beautiful summer day. Had a good time. Good vibe. Enjoyed the service by our waitress. I will return for a follow up visit.
google avatar

Cindy S.

Yelp
I went here over the summer and the experience was horrible. We had a reservation for my friend's birthday at 7pm. By 7:30 they told us they would need our table earlier due to another reservation...(our reservation was made for two hours). It wouldn't have been that bad if they had just told us once that they were going to need the table earlier but they repeatedly came every 20 minutes to remind us they needed the area. Shitttttyyyy ass service. I blame management and management blamed their hostess. I've worked as a server and it was such a shitty thing to do when someone is trying to enjoy and celebrate their birthday. The drinks were ok, nothing was crazy about it. I didn't eat any food but attached is a picture of some of the smallest tacos. The whole experience was just awful that it just ruined everything else. Go somewhere else.
google avatar

Eion P.

Yelp
Prime midtown location with phenomenal view of the Empire State Building. The food was nothing to write home about, but the drinks were great and the service was quick. A fun rooftop if you don't want to break the bank.
google avatar

Alan L.

Yelp
Great view of the Empire State Building and good cocktails. Here is my quick breakdown: 5 stars: view 4 stars: cocktails 3 stars: food We were a large group. We had a comfortable reserved area and attentive service. This is a place to take out of town visitors.

Natalie W.

Yelp
Waited minimally 25 mins before a server finally came, despite having to approach the hostess to make it known we still do not have a server. The hostess walked past us about 6 times even after letting her know we have not been helped. Once we finally get a server, we ordered 3 drinks and an appetizer. The appetizer never came and wasn't even on the tab when the server brought it out. We asked if they'd be bringing out our sliders, to which she said "she asked the kitchen and they can't make them." They were not even busy at the time that we came so overall the experience was pretty ridiculous. Great drinks, but horrific service.
google avatar

Jackie S.

Yelp
More like 3.5 starts. Monarch is known for being a spot to see and be seen at. Yes, it's nice and has great views. But everything else is as expected. Snobby, pretentious staff, and extremely overpriced drinks. You definitely need to reserve a table because this place gets packed with lines out the door. It's an NYC rooftop staple. Even in the rain you can be outdoors which is nice.
google avatar

Francesca I.

Yelp
great place to bring friends who are new to the city. really nice appetizers for a pregame night out. the service was quick but the server themselves really seemed like they didn't want to be there. it gets a little chilly or very hot near the outside patio in winter, so bring something warm just in case!!
google avatar

Sagar G.

Yelp
One of the first rooftops I visited when I moved here about 9 years ago. And I still love the place as much, and take my friends and family there whenever they want to visit. The drinks are a little expensive, Empire State views are great, vibe is lovely. I'd appreciate a little more food options.
google avatar

Jackson S.

Yelp
Hosted a holiday party there. Was a complete fail. Over $100 per person for 2 drinks and a food platter that consisted of fries, pigs in the blanket, and some pizza's, that was so small that not everyone was able to eat. there were passed hor'dourves which were dry and inedible. the initial greeting from management was nice, but then we never say them again and the guy who was trying to settle the bill was telling us that we owed him $4K still, when that was the deposit. We were crammed into a small area. bad experience, waste of company money, will not go back.

Monica G.

Yelp
The drinks were great ! the bartender was friendly and we were able to snag a reservation quickly!

Yelp
Fantastic experience for the thanksgiving day parade. Bucket list item done right! Great service, fun games, raffle, face painting and kept us dry while watching the parade.

Yelp
Don't get the watermelon endives, 20 dollars for 2 pieces of watermelon! but the happy hour is great!

Yelp
Amazing for my friends bday. Staff was amazing and so was the place. Highly recommend

Yelp

Yelp
Not the best rooftop in town, and certainly not the worst. Friday Crowd is pretty good the few times that I did come here, the Wednesday or weekday crowd I believe was okay but I only did come here once during the week. Drinks were standard expensive prices like $26 or or 25 for most mix drinks, Wine not much cheaper but maybe a few dollars less than $25. They do have events here from time to time and maybe you get to experience a VIP experience on this rooftop.
google avatar

Lorraine B.

Yelp
Really pretty nice staffed and great drinks . Currently it partially cover and you can go outside on the balcony and great views
google avatar

Yelp
Thank you Jordana, you make my group feel special every time we go. If you go to Monarch, ask for Jordona. She is the best and will take care of you. It's lots of fun!
google avatar

Bijal R.

Yelp
Probably one of the best rooftops in NYC. Been here multiple times and it's always a blast. Views are INSANE!!! Love going during sunset and especially at night. Music is okay but mainly for the aesthetics and drinks. Finger foods available as well.
google avatar

Chika M.

Yelp
the rooftop definitely had a nice vibe! i loved that i could see the empire state building from it. in terms of food, the fries were definitely the best finger food. well fried and well seasoned, plus the aioli sauce did not disappoint. the crispy tacos were very disappointing, it reminded me of the tacos you'd get from the trader joe's freezer section (which isn't bad, but not up to the standards that i would have expected). the grilled cheese was a bit too buttery and oily for my liking as well. they sat us in the middle of the rooftop floor, which was disappointing because we had nowhere to rest our backs, so it was a bit uncomfortable. our server was very kind and attentive to the things we wanted. i would totally come back to this rooftop but probably not for the food.
google avatar

David E.

Yelp
I'm giving them 2 stars because it does have a nice view and the ambience is great BUT they water down their drinks so beware! I ordered a beer and shot of Jamison and the whiskey was the color of light beer. I sent it back and lo and behold the next one that came out was fine, so there is NO doubt they water drinks down. My wife got a martini and could not even taste the alcohol so we paid and left. It's a shame that they feel the need to rip people off like that, my advice is buy at the bar or better yet get bottled beer.
google avatar

Deborah L.

Yelp
Super fun happy lively place. Very polite service from start to finish. Clean and organized with great diverse crowd and spectacular views. Lots of different options for seating inside or out. Delicious food and great drink selection at good price. Check it out! Reserve online.
google avatar

Nisha G.

Yelp
We had a team get together and this place is so nice. The ambiance, the drinks, staff, location was amazing. Another great thing is the open air rooftop, with a enough space to sit for multiple groups and tables to stand as well. The most best part was the open view and its right next to Empire State Buildings. Check some pictures!!
google avatar

Beny B.

Yelp
Nice view of the Empire State Building. Great cocktails. Fun spot on a hot summer day.

Yelp
My friends and I got together and wanted to go out in NYC. We found this place and thought it was cute and classy. When we arrived, it was just as we expected. Their is an elevator service upstairs where the rooftop bar is located. The lights are dim and the decorations were wonderful for the holiday season. They had many drink options and their cocktails had punny names. All of their drinks tasted great as well. For appetizers we got mini tacos and truffle fries. They were both great. I recommend this place as a place to go after you've already eaten dinner and want a classy place to spend time with people you care about and eat light food and drinks.
google avatar

Phuoc P.

Yelp
Got recommended by a friend who just got back from NYC a week ago, I decided to give this bar a try. There was a few available tables when we got there, it didn't seem to be that busy for a Saturday night. Our server is very friendly. The atmosphere is cozy, the decor is cute. The music was not as loud. However, the drinks are not as strong as we expected (feel like they only poured half shot). Decent prices (compared to LA) Would recommend this place for the view!

Yelp
An interesting location but make a reservation if you are visiting in the evening. Dropped in here for an after show cocktail at around 1100, grabbed a drink and a photo and left. The good: The location, once in the bar the location is pretty great just a block from the Empire State Building and walkable from broadway, Times Square and the Library. The space, overall the space is pretty well done there is indoor and outdoor rooftop with views of the Empire State Building, though to get the indoor space where to rooftop bit matters you have to have a reservation. The bar is awkwardly on the other side of the building and the bottle shelves block any view you might otherwise have from that side of the building. The interior is a little too trendy for me fake living wall and neon light words and all that but it was a nice environment. The bad: The Service, the hostess asked if we had a reservation, when I told her I did not she just kind of stared at me. I told her I was going to the bar and just kind of walked away which was a weird interaction. Like a lot of these bars they have a fun cocktail list which is great but they only had one person working the bar while we were there so getting service became a challenge as he was trying to make the over-complicated cocktails everyone was ordering. The entrance, you get to this place through an elevator that was a bit worse for wear and the entrance was next to a rotating door filled with trash when we got there. The mediocre: Seating. We didn't have a reservation so we didn't sit but after walking the room a bit it seemed there were a lot of unoccupied tables with "reserved" placards on them. I get that they probably don't want people at the bar walking around and just grabbing a table... (which I might have done) ... but this did seem a bit odd to have empty seats in some of the nicer parts of the room blocked off while keeping walkins in a back bar area.

Yelp
Can always count on monarch to have a great night out! Not sure if I've just been lucky the few times I've been, but the DJ/music is always amazing and the staff and bartenders are super friendly, quick, and efficient! The late night apps are also great!

Yelp
I went for the first time to this rooftop and I am very satisfied. First of all, you have to take the elevator to go up to the bar. The place is quite spacious and several waiters are at the bar. There was a private event the day we went there so I didn't see the whole rooftop, but the part where we were was really great, with a very nice view on the Empire State Building. The decoration is quite simple but classy, and outdoor heaters were also available because of the low temperatures that night. The prices were relatively reasonable, we paid 10$ for a beer on draft, which is in my opinion decent given the location of the bar. I would definitely come back.

Nicholas D.

Yelp
Drink was well made, but the views were spectacular of the city skyline. Only went for a quick drink so I can't attest to the food but the atmosphere was classy
