The 38 Best Restaurants in Seoul, South Korea

"Open for: Lunch through dinner every day Price range: $$ Right from its debut in 2019, Mongtan established itself as a quintessential barbecue spot. The signature udae galbi (long beef rib) is a real crowd-pleaser. It’s first cooked in the kitchen over a blazing straw fire — which might seem like a gimmick, but actually gives the meat its distinctive aroma and flavor — before it’s seared over sizzling-hot metal pot lids at the table to finish. Complete your meal with naengmyeon (cold buckwheat noodles) or onion fried rice. Know before you go: Always expect to wait at least a couple of hours." - Matty Kim

The Best Barbecue in Seoul: 14 Must-Try Restaurants - Eater

"Famous for their smoky barbecue cooked over a straw fire, Mongtan has generated an infamously long queue in a quiet alley near Samgakji Station since 2019. Always expect to wait at least a couple of hours, unless you’re one of the lucky few who managed to score an online reservation (available only on weekdays). Their smoky pork belly is excellent, but everyone comes for the signature udae galbi (long beef rib): The staff marinates a 250-gram whole rib and then sears it in the kitchen over a straw fire to infuse its distinctive aroma and flavor. Then it hits sizzling-hot metal pot lids at the table before the staff cuts it into bite-sized pieces. The whole process is as Instagrammable as it is delicious. Complete your meal with naengmyeon (cold buckwheat noodles) or onion fried rice." - Matty Kim

I went here on weekday at 4:30 p.m. I was lucky enough to just walk in and there's seat available. When I finish around 5:30 p.m. there it's a long line of people waiting outside to get in. So if you don't want to wait come to the restaurant at 4:00 p.m. before dinner time. As to the food, The meat is nice and tender but lack of flavor. They claim they smoke it with the straw. But the flavor did not stay on the meat probably due to lack of smoke time. I was really impressed with the truffle steam eggs. It is very unusual to have truffle on top of plain steam eggs. I'm also impressed in addition to truffle on top of the steam egg that there are flakes of truffle inside the steam egg. The end result is it really tastes good. I like it more than the beef itself.

Heard so many rave reviews about this place but also got warned that the lines could be long. Came here at 10.30 on the weekdays, got the number saying our slot time was on 12. So we went to the coffeeshop nearby to wait. Beef Galbi was great but not sure whether it’s worth the wait. Surely will come back if there’s no long queue. As the neighborhood itself got nothing to explore. Service was about what you'd expect at a typical Korean BBQ.

It totally lived up to the hype. If you want to avoid a long wait, try going at an off-hour like 3PM or 5PM. We arrived at 5 and were seated by 5:15. Make sure to finish off your meal with the onion fried rice.

Wanted to try a different style of kbbq and this restaurant was just the right place. I actually walked into the wrong place at first (lol!) but I made it to the correct spot. I knew this place was gonna be busy so I decided to visit in between lunch and dinner and I was seated right away. I was dining alone so I had to order two portions, which was not a problem after I hiked up the fortress steps surrounding Seoul. Unfortunately, not too many restaurants in Korea cater to individuals dining alone. The meat was very juicy and later they made some fried rice with the leftover pieces.

The meat was so good! Really recommend. Take about an hour to queue up but worth it. However the side dish was terrible. Some dish is still frozen. The restaurant was too busy.

Real Korean BBQ! Quality of the meats were great. Atmosphere was OKAY.

I think this place has been far overhyped by tourist social media and food influencers. The food was very nice but I wasn’t blown away by it as some of the video reviews have. The price point was a little on the expensive side so if you are in the area and can get a reservation then I would recommend trying it otherwise in hindsight, I would say that I would not go out of my way just to queue up for this. Careful about the price in the menu, beef rib price stated there is a “half rib” which you cannot order anyway and that’s why there is a minimum order of 2 servings for a “full” rib. So in other words 4 servings for 2 ribs. In terms of taste, I expected a little more tenderness but it was a little bit chewy and the flavour was good but not good enough for me to justify coming again next time I’m in Seoul. I could have just as good a food for nearly half the price.

Soooo good that I still think about it sometimes. 🤤🤤🤤 Staff at the reception might be a bit cold but once sat down you will receive the most professional service! Make sure to get in the queue early!
