Get Into the St. Patrick’s Day Spirit Early at These NYC Spots | Eater

"Named after Walter “Monk” McGinns, this Tribeca hotspot takes its Irish heritage seriously. After all, McGinns was a politician in the mid-1800s and a member of the infamous Dead Rabbit Gang. With outdoor seating and leather booths lining the walls indoors, it has a warm atmosphere with wood, brick, and a fireplace — ideal for taking a breath between packed pubs. Lean into the comfort with the Boss Tweed, a shaken espresso martini made with Jameson Stout-finished Irish Whiskey, and their menu of classic Irish dishes like shepherd’s pie, Irish-style chicken curry, chicken pot pie, and fish and chips." - Lee Musho

Google
Decent spot with some good food and drinks. I got a burger, which was pretty good, as well as a cocktail which was pretty solid as well. Definitely a popular spot, the place was packed when we were there. Nothing was particularly mindblowing from a quality standpoint, but everything quite good!

Google
It is a nice place to hangout with friends. Amazing foood I must say and drinks as well. Totally worth the money you spend and its not too much as well given the location. We were there on a Knicks game night so not sure if they usually play music or not, would have been better if there was music. But still I would give them a 5 stars for everything.

Google
Casual pub with good food. The bartender was very pleasant and my cocktail (the "Bill the Butcher") was excellent. Busy, loud, fun vibes.

Google
Some of the best fish and chips in NYC. This restaurant has the best fish and chips that taste like you’re in Ireland. The service is friendly and nice. It isn’t cramped inside but the food does take a little while to come out.

Michael Sierra-Arévalo

Google
Highlights were the friendly staff and the warm (literally and aesthetically) pub environment. Fish and chips were a bit oily for my taste and you’re going to have to eat (ha) Tribeca prices for run of the mill beers. The house Pilsner was good and they also have an IPA.

Google
Monk McGinns is a decent bar with a lot of space in this area. They have an outdoor space in the summertime which can be nice for small parties. Their beer menu is pretty extensive, both on tap beers and bottles, so this is a prime reason to visit. The staff are good and the prices are good as well.

Google
A great little Irish bar with great bar food. The bartenders were top-notch and made some delicious cocktails for us. A good, diverse crowd and great music. TVs for watching sports, but don’t expect sound on.

Google
I was there last Wednesday for a friend's wedding reception! Friendly staff, good selection of tap beers and liquor in general with a varied food menu! Will return to try more food items!!🍔

Yelp
Really good pub grub, friendly and attentive service, strong list of taps. Been a couple times, for lunch and drinks and apps.

Yelp
Monk Mcginn's had solid drinks & great bartenders- what's not to love? I had the Juanita cocktail & a margarita- both were strong enough for a lack of better terms haha & reasonably priced. I also had the shepherd's pot pie which was tasty albeit I've had better. I would've liked it if the beef sirloin wasn't as chopped up & minced as it was. All in all, I would go to Monk Mcginn's again if I was in the area but probably stick to their apps/snack food & drinks instead.

Yelp
We stopped here for dinner and, although it was right in the middle of happy hour, the staff was still able to provide us with a table for two.  We started with their clam chowder, which was chock full of potatoes, carrots, and clam bits...nicely seasoned, creamy and buttery!  The burger was cooked medium with cheese and bacon...one of the most aesthetically pleasing presentations for a burger and the taste matched its looks...the salad components were fresh and the dressing was tasty.  Finally, the fish and chips kept pace with everything...crispy on the outside and flaky inside...the fries were not overly salted.  Bottom line, the service and food were excellent!

Yelp
Business lunch was great. Bartender ladies were a real pleasure - very attentive and friendly. Everyone enjoyed their food. I had the irish Breakfast which is a favorite of mine. Generous portion all cooked right - very tasty. The pot pie looked awesome and guest devoured it. Another fellow had a sandwich of some kind and he remarked that is was very good. Good french fries too. I had a couple of Alagash Tripel belgium style ale and nice and cold poured right - the kegs here are good. What more can you ask for ? Friendly Irish pub with great service and food. I'll be back

Yelp
Everything about monks is great. Cool atmosphere, food is great as well as cocktails/casual drinks. Star of the show is the service - whole team is exceptionally nice but Eddie is the best bartender and makes the night!

Yelp
I feel relieved to have discovered this spot! The staff all exhibit friendliness and provide guidance. This place should be your next destination! The kitchen seems disorganized. I trust this place completely!

Yelp
Had a cute little lunch by myself here. The wings were good and the service was nice and quick.

Yelp
I've been going here since they opened, throughout the pandemic, and it's amazing how this spot has thrived regardless. A true neighborhood spot, with the friendliest bar staff, great food(the boneless buffalo bites are delicious and a must have every time I go). It can get pretty busy here, but it's still pretty chill. Everybody is just having a good time. If you hang by the bar long enough, a seat will open up. Can't wait to head back!

Yelp
Fantastic place. Food and Drinks are great. Service is top notch! Great place to host events or happy hour.

Yelp
Food: Good, nothing out of this world, but solid since portions are big so it is nice especially when you've had a few drinks. I actually really liked this place unlike other pub like bars that seem a bit more run down and the food is too greasy. I also noticed that mostly all dishes come with fries, pretty good in terms of price. I paid about $20 for this entire plate. As for cocktails, again, not out of this world, but good. They were a bit pricy (~ $17 per cocktail) especially since I've tried other spots that go for the same price and their cocktails are phenomenal (e.g. Warren Peace). Service: Good, they were nice. Ambiance: Good place for a catch up with friends, and to watch a game!
google avatar

Yelp
Great fish and chips. The service was friendly. The fish was flaky and crispy and a sizeable portion. Mussels app had intriguing flavor combinations. Their cocktail menu is delicious and extensive.

Frank W.

Yelp
What a RIP OFF! $12 per Guiness on a semi pint. Beer was $6 bucks maybe $8? Spirits alcohol is massively over supplied and prices are coming down every week. Bars like this are still hyper inflating prices and should start to get push back for this type of price manipulation. It's just the principle of them being Super GREEDY.

Yelp
Delicious clam chowder and delectable shepherds pie. Great service and ambiance, too.

Yelp
Ideal spot for post-work drinks, offering both upstairs and downstairs seating. The cocktails are undeniably delectable - a must-try if you're in the area.

Yelp
New Year's Eve, went with friends. Food was amazing! Wings- spicy but not deadly, teriyaki much better. Quesadilla: big, but a bit crunchy. Cauliflower: good sauce! Drinks: standard, not much more to add. Would go again! And, it's not pitch black here!
google avatar

Yelp
AWESOME place!! Great vibes, loved the decor - there was dim lighting but not too dim where you can't read the menu. We got a bunch of cocktails - they were all really good! Would def recommend the Juanita - it was nice! For food they have a great menu of regular bar snacks but also dinner. My favorite was the crispy beer battered spicy cauliflower bites - so tasty! The dessert was okay. The Apple crumble pie was pretty good but we were disappointed with the lava cake. Other than that it was a great place!

Yelp
An impressive list of cocktails, good service, and complimentary selection of bites. I was there mostly for drinks but decided to order the boneless chicken wings and surprisingly it was probably the best I've ever. So tender and juicy and the Buffalo sauce was on point. The onion rings had a perfect crunch with sweet onions embedded. An elevation of common bar food. Good job. They also had tv outside to watch sports which is a nice addition. Will definitely be back.

Yelp
Went to Monk Mcginn's in tribeca for the Super Bowl. It's a nice Irish pub bar and far big with two floors. The food was classic bar food but everyone enjoyed. The staff was super accommodating with reserving tables especially for such a popular event like the Super Bowl. They have a great happy hour it seems too.
google avatar

Yelp
I have a new favorite drink! Walters Sour! Tangy, sweet, spice - this drink has got it all! Stopped by the bar after work for a few coworkers, and it seems like a good place for it, since everyone else seemed to be doing the same. Not much for happy hour that I know of. But amazing drinks! I also tried the Johnny Sirocco and if you like Mezcal, it's a must have! Can't wait to be back to try more!

Colin M.

Yelp
Cozy pub ambience, bartender with an accent, and a tasty-pint of Guinesss. Lots of tv's, booths, hi-tops... take your pick. Food is excellent... great tenders. While-a-way an evening at the pub was supposed to be like this...

Yelp
We arrived a party of 3, had to ask to be seated, bartender/manager. After we were seated another waiter took our drink order & appetizer and food order. We received our drinks followed by our food order then I brought to the waiter's attention that we didn't receive the appetizer. As I was telling him it came out I mentioned to the waiter that the appetizer should have come out with our drinks. The waiter apologized and said if you still want it I will comp you. Then the bartender/manager rushed over took the appetizer and said don't worry about it I will take it off your bill. What a terrible customer service experience. We frequent NYC. But will never go back there.

Yelp
We went here after reading the reviews about their did bring good. We ordered the guacamole,a bottle of Cabernet and both had the Shepperds Pie, it was delicious! We like the place and we sat outside. The dinning inside is very nice and the service is on point. We will return. The portion was on the big sized.

Yelp
If you're not familiar with Monk McGinn's, then I encourage you to do so. Additionally, if you're not familiar with Pulsd (a discount/promo website for restaurants & activities), then search it and sign up to receive their promo emails. My friend and I were in the area for a charity walk and in the past, had some difficulty finding a good brunch spot. Since the walk has always been in Foley Square, I did some homework weeks before to find a good Sunday brunch in this vicinity. I looked on Pulsd and voila! Bottomless cocktails brunch deal for 2 at Monk McGinn's for only $39. This included a main entree and a wide cocktail selection--unlimited for 90 minutes. Mimosa, Bloody Mary, Aperol Spritz, French 75, Punch tea were the options. When we arrived, the pub couldn't be more cozy in terms of atmosphere. Monk McGinn's was decorated all the way for Christmas. So many lights and wreaths adorned the restaurant and it looked so charming. Most, if not all tables were high top which meant whoever sat on the stools, it would be the backless kind. The waitress wasted no time in taking our drink order. I was addicted to their delicious Aperol Spritz the entire time, while my friend savored the Bloody Mary. The brunch menu had some really good choices and it was a bit difficult to decide. We both chose the seafood frittata which included shrimp, crabmeat and lobster although I don't recall tasting much lobster. As we enjoyed our cocktails (and yes, your 90 minutes is precisely timed) we eagerly waited for our frittata since we felt hungry. And we waited. And still waited. We both agreed that it was the longest wait in our experience. The waiter, who finally brought over our meals, mentioned they had to tend to a very large group. The seafood frittata was quite good, served with one slice of toast. I would have liked a teeny salad to accompany the frittata, but it was served solo. After spending more than 90 minutes at Monk McGinn's, my friend and I agreed we'd like to return for dinner and/or HH (lasts until 8 p.m. during the week). I really enjoyed everything about Monk McGinn's and definitely plan to return. Winner!!

Yelp
I ordered a burger. After an hour I tried to signal a waitress, I think they realized I had been forgotten as people around me were getting food, and they had ordered well after me. She returned and said the food would be out shortly. Clearly they were currently cooking the burger. I was wrong. A steak sandwich came out. I mentioned this to the person who brought it out. But I quickly just decided to keep the steak sandwich. I didn't want to see food get thrown away. Despite me not eating the type of cheese on the steak sandwich. But it was also a beautiful medium rare. It was tasty, not great, but good. After more than an hour, anything would be good. But this was probably a sandwich many people would enjoy. I really want to give them 1 star. But the sandwich was decent and everyone was fairly nice. Everyone makes mistakes. But still, I won't return. They also itemized a Processing fee of 3%. Why they don't work this into their prices, I have no idea.

Yelp
We went on a Friday night with a group of 9 people. We had reservations, but the place was still indeed packed even at 7pm. Overall food was okay and drinks was decent. Waitress forgot to bring our water several times amongst other things. Granted it was busy - but service could be better.

Yelp
Is Edward Junior from Limerick the best bartender south of the former St. John's Park? Yes. Great pub. Even better staff. (Strong drinks, too.) Highly recommended.

Yelp
Update November 2019: Jacqueline knows how to make a proper mimosa! All bubbly and a splash of OJ just for color. :) Anyway, we were back again, this time sitting at the bar. Still a GREAT place and I'm so glad we we went back. It's going to become one of my regular places for brunch! We went here with a $39 Pulsd deal. Although we got to the Monk McGinns a little early they had our table reserved and the 90 min of unlimited bliss began. They had belinni's, mimosas, aperol spritz's and many more on their unlimited menu. As soon as we were close to being empty the wonderful waitress was on it to fill it right back up. And the pours were heavy!! 100% worth it. Even if you don't have the Pulsd deal. The breakfast burger was very tasty and not dried out. And the bacon...the amount and thick cut bacon on their breakfast burger should be illegal and was something to write home about. Sooo good. The staff were great and very attentive. I'll be back!

Allison R.

Yelp
Reserved a spot here for an after work happy hour expecting 30 people. When we arrived, a lovely spot upstairs in the corner was cordoned off with a velvet rope. When we said we'd probably only have about a third of the attendees, they gave us no problem whatsoever. We didn't order any food, but from what I saw at other tables, it looked top notch. House IPA was perfect. Service was superb; attentive without being pushy. Really outstanding all around. And the Christmas decorations were *chef's kiss.*
google avatar

Kristia B.

Yelp
After an exhaustive week with the finish line in sight, you want to grab a few colleagues and head over for their happy hour. Since I am not a regular drinker, it can be challenging to find one that has the right balance of sweetness and alcohol. I cannot remember the name of the drink, but it had a hint of peach, and 3/4 of the table ordered it lol. I really wish I did though because it was so good. No time for appetizers, just a quick drink with the girls, and we would love to come back. As we walked out, we quickly noticed that they were packed and it was only 6 pm. It's clear that this cocktail bar is popular with those who work in the surrounding area so get here early or make reservations if you want a table.

Yelp
Came here with a pulsd deal for brunch. Such a fun experience! The food was great the drinks were strong, nothing is fancy very Irish bar but still tasted good. I was a fan of the tipsy teapot, we ordered a few of them through out our time, very fun to share. The only thing a little off putting was how drunk other people were in the restaurant during he boozy brunch. Maybe stop serving people falling off of their stools.
google avatar

Eve G.

Yelp
Been here twice for boozy brunch...can't say enough good things about Monk Mcginns! I made a reservation on Yelp for Easter Sunday. I was worried that there might be a disconnect between Yelp and the restaurant (it sometimes happens) so I called the day before to confirm my reservation. The woman I spoke to was super friendly and helpful, unlike other places that confirm and hang up immediately. It was quiet, but my friend and I were seated at a 4 person high-top table. I love having extra room. Every table is blocked by plastic dividers, so I definitely felt comfortable eating indoors. They have an unlimited boozy brunch, I personally love the French 75s. My friend switched between the drinks and she said everything was good. We both ordered the burger (so good) and the fries are amazing. I definitely left there full and tipsy. Can't wait to come back for another epic brunch adventure!

Yelp
My wife and a few friends came here on a Saturday around noon and really chose this place because they offer brunch. When you enter it has classic Irish pub look with wooden furniture. When you first enter the bar is on the left with more seating in the back. It was pretty empty when we came in so we were able to sit right away. As previously mentioned they offer brunch but you could also order anything else off their menu. The brunch menu consists of entrees but if you want a 90 min boozy brunch with drinks such as Bloody Mary, Bellini, screwdriver, mimosas, Pilsner beer, etc you add $24.95 with any entree. So to us it was worth it. I had the 3 egg omelette with bacon, avocado, onion and swiss, it came with home fries and toast, the serving was generous kind of reminding me of a diner, some of the other items were eggs benedict, French toast, etc. The service was good, our server was helpful and warmed up to us even though in the beginning she seemed annoyed to answer our questions. Overall a nice spot I would return to.

Yelp
Came here with three other girlfriends because we bought 2 pulsd deals at $39/each. "Your $39 Brunch For Two (a $98 Value) Includes: 2 Entrees (up to a $22 value each). 90 Minutes of Unlimited Cocktails including Bloody Marys, Mimosas, Peachy Bellinis, French 75s, Aperol Spritzers, and Tipsy Punch Teapots for 2 (a $27 value each). Tax & tip not included. We recommend tipping on the full value of the service." My friend who bought the pulsd deals made a reservation for the four of us at 2pm on a Saturday afternoon. When we arrived, the place was maybe half full. The crowd was mainly 20-30ish year olds enjoying brunch with friends. The brunch menu had entrees no more than $22, so we basically could choose anything from the brunch menu (cannot pick from their regular menu). I got the breakfast burger because it sounded filling and I was super hungry not having eaten anything all day in preparation for this. I got my burger medium rare and egg sunny side up. The burger was definitely sizable and filled me up pretty much for the rest of the day. For the drinks, I started with a bloody mary, which was a lighter bloody than the ones I've had before. It was still good, I tasted the vodka. Feeling more sweet, I stuck to mimosas for the rest of brunch. To end, our table ordered the Tipsy Punch Teapot because we were curious to see what it is. Our tea cups came with ice and a slice of orange. The tea pot had the punch in it along with ice to keep the beverage chilled. It was pretty adorable, kind of like a fun twist on afternoon tea. Because taxes and tips were not included in the pulsd deal, we ended up paying about $12 additional per person. So the total cost of brunch was around $32/person with bottomless drinks. A reasonable deal if you're able to down several drinks imo.

Yelp
My friend and I came here on Sunday at 12pm with a Pulsd brunch deal - 2 entrees and unlimited brunch cocktails for 90 min. It was honestly worth every penny. The restaurant itself has an old-style feel to it (think a 1920s pub, but spotless, thankfully) and was pretty quiet which we didn't mind at all. The space was also very nicely decorated for the holidays which made the space feel even more cozy. Perfect for a casual brunch. In all honesty, we figured the brunch dishes would be 'meh' at best when we bought our Pulsd deal, but I was actually very pleasantly surprised at the quality of the food here. We wanted to try out 2 dishes so we each got a different one and decided to split them up - 1 Irish Breakfast with black and white pudding, bacon, toast, 2 eggs however you want them, fries, and beans and 1 Breakfast Burger which comes with a fried egg and bacon on top (we ordered it without cheese since I don't mess around with dairy) and fries on the side. This was a TON of food for 2 people but everything tasted delicious so we powered through and cleaned our plates. The burger was one of the highlights for me - perfectly seasoned and served with salty, crispy, addictive fries. Don't sleep on the food here because its REALLY good. For drinks, my friend Mel stuck with the French 75 and I tried the Bloody Mary and the Mimosa. The Bloody Mary was perfect, in my opinion - the spice and horseradish level was spot on. The Mimosa, however, kinda tasted like moth balls or soap - not that I have tried either one, but I will use my imagination here (maybe its the bubbly they used?), so maybe skip that and try out their other brunch cocktail options. We also really appreciated that the place wasn't crazy noisy. When we arrived at 12, there was only one other table getting ready to order. By the time we left, there were a lot more diners sitting at the bar area. I think TriBeCa is pretty quiet on the weekend in general, but it seems like this place is pretty new as well. I hope more people give this hidden gem a try. Definitely recommend!

Yelp
We came in late just for drinks. It was crowded and the cocktails weren't memorable but the service was great. They are walking distance to my partners townhome and stay open late. I'll be back.

Yelp
Stopped in for brunch one Sunday, just before noon with a Pulsd brunch deal. The deal was for two entrees, and 90 minutes of unlimited drinks. Other than your typical mimosas, and bloody marys, you can also choose from French 75s, and aperol spritzs, which I really appreciated. I had the French 75. The first one was good but after that, it it tasted a bit funky (maybe they switched champagnes?). For food, my friend and I decided to order the burger and the Irish breakfast, and go halfsies since we wanted to try both. Both were good, no complaints. It's definitely above average and a lot better-tasting than other restaurants with similar brunch deals. I also really liked that they were decked out for Christmas already. It gave the place a nice, homey feel. It didn't even feel like we were dining at a pub. I'd definitely come back for another brunch - hopefully before Christmas so that I can admire the decorations a bit more.

Pliny E.

Yelp
"Great spot to grab a bite! Friendly staff, cozy atmosphere, and tasty dishes. Plenty of options on the menu, all deliciously satisfying. Definitely worth checking out for a casual meal with friends or family."
google avatar

Chanel N.

Yelp
Very cute pub that mostly consists of high top tables and the bar. Had a reservation for 2 and was promptly seated. They gave a normal menu and then one on an iPad. The iPad is a nice touch because you can see pictures of the food and drink (satisfying my inner kid with pretty pictures on a menu). After waiting a while and no one took our order I thought maybe we were suppose to order on the iPad, yeah no. I did the pulsd bottomless brunch deal where you get unlimited drinks and an entree. I went with the breakfast burger, which was big and amazing flavor wise. The only bad thing to say about the food is that they asked me how I like my egg, said over easy, but there was no run. Booooo As for the mimosas there were hardly any consistency aka some were stronger/less orange than others but overall tasty. It was a great experience and will be happily back.

Yelp
This place is good old fashioned Irish style bar. We had bounced around to a couple bars before this but once here we wanted to shut the pace down. Eddie and his coworker ( Irish woman) were great bartenders, quickest hands in the East. Told us a little history about the name of the bar too! Good beer list to choose a beer from so if you're in the area and feeling like a cold one I suggest you stop by

Anja W.

Yelp
Great bartender. But all 27 tvs were turned from the NY Knicks in the last 5min of the game. Unbelievable.

Melissa S.

Yelp
Chill ambiance. Great cocktail. Great service. Didn't try the food but it did look good!
google avatar

Shail S.

Yelp
Monk McGinn is a nice, upscale cocktail bar - and that's it. Nothing special about the drinks, they were well made. However, service wasn't very good as they snapped at my friend multiple times and kept double checking his valid New York state ID. I think it's worth checking out if you're in the area as it again does have solid drinks but I wouldn't recommend going out of the way to come here, especially with so many great cocktail bar options in the city.
google avatar

Tara H.

Yelp
What a fantastic & welcoming bar- reminds me of the "pubs" back home in London. Patrick, who was working behind the bar, was running the place like his own - he was incredibly attentive and made everyone feel like they were walking into their own lounge! Also makes kick ass cocktails too!
google avatar

Kenny C.

Yelp
Step 1 - Do the unlimited boozy brunch Step 2 - Order the Irish breakfast Step 3 - Undo your belt Step 4 - Nap? A bunch of us came here using the Pulsd deal (they're very accommodating for large groups). We sat by the door, which wasn't ideal but it fit us all. Every time the door opened, it got noticeably colder, and service wasn't the quickest. But our server was definitely trying her damnedest. Probably didn't help that we drink like fish. But hey, that's the price you pay when you offer unlimited brunch! That said, the drinks selection are very solid. The French 75 is great, and the mimosa is your standard fare. In terms of food, the Irish breakfast is SO MUCH. But also delicious. You get some breakfast sausage links, some crispy blood sausage, two eggs any style, beans, and toast. Oh, and also fries. Coma on a plate. Loved it! Eventually, they did start bringing pitchers of cocktails around instead of grabbing/refilling glasses individually, so that was good. Overall, a fun time!

Yelp
Not too crowded. Not loud. And lots of beers. Definitely on an after work watering hole by WTC
google avatar

Heena J.

Yelp
I didn't eat here so my rating is purely for the beer/cocktail selection and the service. They have an extensive list for drinks and I had the Ithaca flower power beer. It was a great IPA. We did outdoor seating and they have heated lamps to keep us fairly warm. They waiter was super friendly and over good service.
google avatar

Yelp
If I could give more than 5 stars I would. The service, food, drinks, atmosphere are all amazing. My girlfriend and I call this place home. No other bar hits the same. The bartenders are all so incredibly accommodating, really making it feel like home. I could not recommend Monks more, amazing bar!! Also, Eddie is by far the most incredible bartender I could ever dream of, he keeps me up at night with how good he is at slinging drinks. Long live Eddie, long live Monks.

Yelp
The food and staff at this establishment was great however during dinner there were two men sitting at the bar having a super loud conversation. It made me feel very uncomfortable. One of the men had said some unthinkable things about different ethnic groups as well as women. This had to have been one of the most uncomfortable dinners that I have had in awhile. The food was amazing but I wouldn't ever go back to that establishment.
