These Hotels Take Farm-to-Table to the Next Level

"Collecting eggs from chickens is one of the optional pre-breakfast activities at Monkey Island Estate, a new property in England’s small town of Bray. The estate has a vegetable garden and chicken coop, where guests can gather eggs ahead of breakfast. The chefs at the restaurant will transform the fresh eggs into a fluffy omelette, eggs Benedict or a scramble with house-smoked salmon." - Mary Holland

Monkey Island Estate (Bray, Berkshire) 1 Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"You might not guess from the name that the body of water containing Monkey Island is the Thames, thirty or so miles up the river from London. The original Palladian structure dates back to the early 18th century, and the Wedgewood Suite remains in the original style; the bulk of the rooms are housed in later expansions, and are roughly equal parts contemporary and classic. The brasserie, the bar, and the Whisky Snug are all eminently worthy options, and the village of Bray, just over the bridge, is home to a few more. Most unique is the spa, housed in a permanently moored riverboat." - Tablet Hotels

My husband and I stayed at Monkey Island for two nights for my 40th birthday and our anniversary. We arranged with the hotel to get picked up by a taxi at Maidenhead station, which was an efficient and professional service that took about 10 minutes to arrive at Monkey Island. The check-in staff were friendly and professional, and the check-in building smelt amazing! We stayed in The Barn, which was beautiful! Our room was lovely, with a comfortable bed and walk-in shower with Elemis products. The hotel staff left us a hand written welcome note and a bottle of prosecco in our fridge which was a lovely touch. We had two massages each on The Floating Spa, which were the best massages we've ever had-Beverley and Lucy were both fantastic masseuses. The short walk to the spa boat through the wild flowers was stunning. We had dinner and breakfast in the Monkey Island Brasserie, and they were delicious. The dining area is beautiful and feels very relaxed (definitely check out the paintings on the walls and ceiling of the Monkey Room!). The staff (Emelia, Clara, Azlan, Karla, and Lilian) were incredibly friendly and helpful, and we took Emelia's recommendation and had a lovely walk around Bray Lake and into Bray Village. We also loved walking around the beautiful grounds and seeing the geese and swans. A fantastic place to stay, and we definitely hope to return!

Wow, what a great location. I had booked lunch at the Brasserie as a birthday treat for a friend. The service by Karla and Emilia was impeccable, both friendly and professional. We were made very welcome. It was very quiet the day we visited but the lovely river views, friendly service and quality of the food made up for any lack atmosphere. The 'small plates' were actually quite large (depending on your appetite!) so we thought the 3 small plates/glass of wine offer was very good value. Would definitely return for a relaxing lunch in a stunning location with good, unpretentious food and lovely service.

Lovely for a weekend getaway — peaceful, calming and very relaxing. They have a very small gym but does the job, the restaurant is pretty good too, especially the breakfast selection. The rooms are beautiful and the estate is well looked after.

The hotel situated on very nice grounds however it is at least a 20 to 25 minute walk into town which I did not expect.||The room was very small, although it had great shower amenities. It had a very old hairdryer, which made it totally impossible to dry your hair as the cord was too short, and there was no suitable mirror to get close enough to even try to dry your hair. We did request heat, which never seemed to come on. The best feature in the hotel was the restaurant and “the bartender Nick, who was very friendly and full of suggestions as to where to go. My thanks to him for making the one night a better stay.

Stayed here ahead of a visit to the Fat Duck and it was a real treat. Beautiful and spacious layout of the hotel and grounds, with the banks of the Thames on both sides. The bistro, lounge and bar and patio area overlooking the river worked wonderfully well in the summer sunshine. The rooms were a little small, but very well appointed and comfortable. Overall a real treat.
