Tokaji Aszú in Cocktails – The Next Big Thing?

"In Bath I found a Tokaji Aszú Martini that gives the sweet wine a larger pour alongside neutral vodka, a spritz of ginger essence and a tangerine peel, which lets the Aszú’s apricot, honey and orange-blossom aromas shine; the martini’s acidity cuts through and enhances rich bites such as the chicken liver parfait tartlet topped with chicory jam and Tokaji-poached grapes that burst with caramelised fruitiness, finished with crispy chicken skin and fresh thyme." - Lane Nieset

"18th-century writer and women’s education advocate Elizabeth Montagu lends her name to this restaurant set inside the old carriage houses of her former home. The estate is now the Royal Crescent Hotel & Spa and an extensive garden separates the main hotel from the restaurant, making for a lovely early evening stroll in good weather. The menu showcases seasonal produce from the south west, such as Somerset lamb, with the quality of the ingredients shining through in well-honed and attractive dishes." - Michelin Inspector

Enjoyed a wonderful afternoon tea, with an extra round of sandwiches & regular drinks tops up, including a switch to a decadent hot chocolate to finish. The Bath bun & scone were paticularly delicious. Excellent service, exquisitely decorated dining rooms with views onto the beautiful garden. Expensive, but worth it for a special treat.

I was so excited to go for afternoon tea at the Royal crescent but I left bitterly disappointed. This was a special occasion as I was celebrating my birthday and I had traveled from Cardiff to visit my daughter who is in uni. Got off to a bad start when the server who greeted us made a comment which was supposed to be funny but I thought he was being serious. Note to staff, obtain a rapport with your customers before you try to be funny but end up embarrassing them. We were booked in for the festive afternoon tea which I was very excited about. We were told we could order unlimited teas. This would be great if the staff who take your tea order actually brings it out to you. I had to ask multiple times. As for the food, sandwiches were fine. Nothing special. Scones were lovely. Warm and buttery. The festive bun was a strange flavour and overpowering. The sweet treats were the biggest disappointment. We didn't enjoy any of the flavours. Very much style over substance. The polenta cake tasted like curry. The macaron was way too sweet. Service continued to be poor. No one checked on us to ask if all was ok. Our plates were not cleared away and we were sat there for almost an hour before I called someone to ask for the bill. I honestly wish i'd complained, especially considering how expensive it was. By that point, my daughter and I just wanted to leave. It was a huge shame as it is a beautiful venue. Sadly I would not recommend and I will not be returning.

The “Classic Tasting Menu” was delicious and the menu able to be modified to be gluten free. Mackerel, lobster, beef, strawberries were featured. Wine pairings were complementary. Lovely live music jazz, Garden backyard at the Royal Crescent, made for sensational evening.

A fabulous afternoon tea experience with our first visit to Bath! Some of the best scones we’ve ever had and were so light and fresh, with the Bath buns still being slightly warm in the middle! Exquisite bites of cake and pastry and the finger sandwiches were divine too. Cannot recommend the afternoon tea enough and the service was superb too!

We dined here yesterday and while the setting and service were genuinely lovely, the food itself was disappointing overall. From a vegan perspective, the menu was fine but slightly underwhelming. Flavours were very muted across the dishes and the portion sizes were small. The one real standout was the beetroot dish, which was also the only warm dish I was served and, unfortunately, the most memorable part of the meal for the right reasons. My wife is gluten-free and her menu was tailored, which we appreciated. However, the compromises made weren’t ideal. Additional vegan dishes were added for her, but these were also small and lacked depth of flavour. A cheese course was served before dessert, which felt a little odd, and the dessert itself had a grainy texture that didn’t land well. From a food perspective, the experience didn’t quite deliver, especially given the expectations. That said, the restaurant itself is beautiful, and the staff were exceptional – warm, attentive, and genuinely welcoming, which made the overall experience far more enjoyable than the food alone would have allowed.

The Royal Crescent was a great stay. Lovely grounds, amazing service and just relaxing. So quiet it was refreshing.

Atmosphere and service was what you would expect from an establishment like the Royal Crescent Hotel. We thoroughly enjoyed our afternoon tea. I really appreciated the option of hot chocolate or coffee for non tea drinkers. Scones were served warm and the sandwiches were very fresh and the bread so moist and delicious. Desserts were visually pleasing with a taste to match! When we return to Bath, this place will be our first stop!

The first building most people usually think of when talking about Bath is The Royal Crescent – so I was thrilled to receive a present of Afternoon Tea in the well-renowned The Royal Crescent Hotel for my birthday. You feel like you’re stepping back into a regency drama as you enter through the doors. You make your way through the impressive hotel and gardens to their restaurant - Montagué's Mews. We took our seats and were then given a choice of teas or coffees. I went with a ‘Chocolate Brownie Tea’ which was surprisingly delicious – I would highly recommend trying it. You can try a variety of teas or coffees as they offer top-ups throughout the experience. The main attraction then came shortly afterwards. It featured 3 tiers of delicious sandwiches, cakes and scones. Every element of the Afternoon Tea was impeccable, much like the ambience and service. The highlight had to be the Bath Bun, which was a real sugary treat, alongside the Patisserie items. They also offered a free top-up of the Sandwiches which was generous. We enjoyed a glass of Champagne alongside our Afternoon Tea, and it all felt rather extravagant – but that’s what Afternoon Tea is all about. There was a beautiful outdoor seating area too, which I imagine would be wonderful to enjoy your Afternoon Tea outside if the sun was shining. Overall, the entire experience was superb and I cannot fault a thing. Every element of the Afternoon Tea was delectable, the service was impeccable and the surroundings were wonderful. If you’re looking for a treat while you’re in Bath – I would highly recommend a visit to The Royal Crescent Hotel for Afternoon Tea at Montagué's Mews.
