The Best Restaurants in the Tri-Cities, Washington | Eater Seattle

"Monterosso’s opened in 1995, but its vessel — a vintage Pullman dining car — dates back to 1947. It’s the appropriate digs for an old-school Italian restaurant known for lasagna, manicotti, and capellini, as well as an inviting ambience, cooking classes, and wine dinners. Diners can enjoy sausage stuffed mushrooms or a classic Bolognese in Monterosso’s dining room, on the patio, or grab a family meal to go for up to four." - Kelly Knickerbocker

Google
Super fun experience but it could use a "face lift". Excellent service. The food is good but very expensive. It's the perfect place for a special occasion but I wouldn't go for a dinner out. I recommend making reservations, especially for groups of 4+. The Veal Marsala was 5 stars whereas the Chicken Parmesan was closer to 3 stars and the Alfredo somewhere in between.

Google
I try to visit Monterosso's everytime I'm in the tri cities for work. Tonight I had a glass of La Quercia Montepulciano – Abruzzo – 2021 Monterosso’s Bruschetta for an appetizer on thier molasses bread, absolutely delicious. Dinner I had the chicken Parm with thier Romano white sauce over Angel hair pasta.

This is a unique Italian restaurant. Dine in a vintage train car. Good selection of wine. The food was very good.

Monterosso's is always an excellent experience. Me and my fiance have been going to monterosso's for Valentine's Day and our anniversary for 8 years now.

This train car was amazing, it was very nice inside. The waitress was so helpful and offered the specials . The food was so delicious.

Have wanted to try this place for a while now and finally had the opportunity. I love the train car experience it’s a cute place. No standing room inside people right next to you as they wait for their table. This didn’t bother us just so you are aware. Small place so it was quite loud, had some ladies deep in wine who were very loud. Once they left the noise level was okay. Overall the atmosphere was very unique and enjoyable. Kids loved seeing the kitchen at the end of the train car. The food was just okay. The bread starter was very dry, the roll was better just not much flavor even with the basil oil they provide. I had the black and white braised pork pasta dish. I can’t find the name of it anywhere online and didn’t take picture of the menu, but for the price there was very little on the plate. Noodles were home made and yummy but falling apart. Pork meat had very little flavor and just wasn’t a good cut. I think the sauce had separated. Just wasn’t great. My daughter enjoyed her fettuccini Alfredo with shrimp and her friend liked the Mac and cheese kids meal. Both their food looked good, and most of the pictures I see on reviews look wonderful. I would like to give something else a chance when and if we make it in again. We had great service, and sat down at opening on a Friday night for 3 with no reservation but they filled up quick.

Google
My family came here after my sister got married & the server was attentive & friendly. The food took awhile, but was freshly made & tasted good. They provided 3 small pieces of random breads with olive oil & balsamic, but you had the purchase soup/salad separately. The ambience of the train setting is beautiful & romantic. We were lucky to get in without a reservation, so I’d recommend making one before visiting.

Yelp
Unique experience and atmosphere. Friendly service. Pasta was obviously fresh. Didn't find the food to be particularly memorable, however. Bland flavors. For Italian food it lacked garlic. Portions were smaller with the exception of the salad.

Yelp
Loved everything about our dining experience at Monterosso's!! The atmosphere was amazing, food was delicious, service was great

Yelp
We have dined in a railroad car, but had never experienced it without the train moving! Super fun. Kids loved it. Good was good but maybe lacking in salt. Bread was also bland. Wine was cold, food was warm, except for our soup that came out, barely above room temperature. I would be willing to check this place out again as our server was super kind. I think this place could also use a facelift.

Yelp
This place is a gem in a quaint train car. We had a very professional waitress who knew every selection on the menu and had great recommendations. The food was very good and we will definitely return.

Yelp
Quaint, great food. with above average service. I would revisit this place. They also have a great wine list.

Yelp
Positives 1. Cute train 2. The kids loved the environment and their pasta 3. My wife's Tortellini Oreste was tasty & flavorful. One of the better creamy pesto dishes I can remember. 4. The house Italian lager was good Negatives 1. Way overpriced in ratio to quality 2. Bread was terrible in my opinion, tasted like a bland sweet roll from a Mexican bakery 3. Marinara sauce was way over simmered, borderline burnt. I do not believe it was fresh that day but if it was it just sucked. This was on the meatball appetizer as well as my parmigiana dish. I am going home and cooking it right next week so I can get that nasty marinara taste out of my mouth. In the end, not worth the price.

Yelp
First time eating here and we will be back for sure! All four of us agreed that the food was rich and delicious. The salad was fresh, pasta was a perfect al dente, and the sauce was phenomenal. We've been to several other Italian restaurants in Richland and this one was the best, hands down.

Yelp
dinner in a train car? a vintage Pullman dining car? sure!! we're in for dinner a bit early but that's how we roll during spring training because 5:00 am comes early around here. the interior is done up nice; I'm only casually familiar with the period but I feel we could just as well be rolling. even though the train might could use some fresh paint in the spring the kitchen works just fine :-) menu looks totally legit for Italian sit-down: classic dishes in the classic styles, with the classic ingredients... and if you want something special?? there's always the daily specials!! skipped the red at dinner yesterday but other than that we started in the usual manner with fresh-out garlic breadlings and a housemade balsmic in oil :-) light and sweet and oh so good and we were assured of more breads as the pork tacos came out. while not strictly italian by my reckoning they were tasty and I would get them again if someone showed up with a good translation. finished up with mahi mahi on angel hair pasta with zucchini and mushrooms in a light cream sauce with a couple cranks of black pepper and a small pile of fresh parm shreds. feeling good enough about dinner that we're planning to visit their sister shop before heading back south.

Yelp
My wife and I had heard about this place for a long time just never had an occasion to try it. Well, it was our 28th anniversary dinner so we finally remembered to try it and we were super impressed. We made reservations on a Friday for Saturday night at 5:30pm for two. I had called in a flower shop to deliver a bouquet of flowers to greet my wife and I upon arrival. When we got there, it was sort of confusing where to enter and I feel bad for people that are limited to wheelchair access since they wouldn't have access here going up as many steps as we had to. Our server immediately greeted us when we entered (it's sort of weird walking directly into the dining area and not a waiting area) and asked who we were and if we had a reservation. Upon saying who I was, I was asked if I was expecting "anything" and I said yes. They had conveniently placed the bouquet on our table in the middle of the car behind some glass so it was a pleasant surprise for my wife to see. once we got around the glass. Thanks Shelby's Floral but that's another review. We had never dined in a railcar before. It's a very unique ambiance and we liked it. I didn't ask where the bathroom was in case I wanted to wash my hands, but thankfully we didn't need to use it anyway. The tropical tea was tasty and the bread was homemade and very delicious, we just wish we could have had more than one refill on the bread. My wife and I had side salads, chicken parm, and lasagna which we shared with one another. Excellent food! Worth the wait. Service was stellar, we got a lot of refills and we rewarded our server with a great tip who sweetly asked to hug my wife when we were leaving she was so touched. She was totally worth it. We will come back and take our whole family next time, but we have yet to see how a party of 5 will fit there at a single table, we were scratching our head at that. When we went there were several tables with youngsters crying and screaming which somewhat sucked but not the restaurant's fault I know. Very good value for what you get, we were surprised at how affordable it was and yet the quality was so impeccable. Can't wait to try it again but with a bigger party.

Yelp
Coming here from California and Nevada, I was very excited to see what the hype was about. I tried to convince my partner to go with me and glad we went. It was a unique experience eating inside a small train (only 11 tables) and really felt like a train inside and it started while opening the door. The food was great had the white shrimp pasta and had lots of bread and they were all good. I didn't care much for the balsamic vinegar since it was very sweet. Their moscato was also great and had a dessert treat of tiramisu. Overall, it was w great experience and have already been there twice before I wrote this review.

Diane S.

Yelp
My husband Bernie and I have been sitting at this less-than-fine establishment for over an hour, our entrees are harder to find than a Where's Waldo. The train cart space is cozy and fun, but might be there in place to distract from time quickly passing outside while you wait for your food to come. It might have been hours or weeks here, my mind is too foggy to tell. I've probably missed several bingo nights, and the FOMO is raging. Bernie told me to say a prayer so I might do that. p.s Bernie made me include that service was very friendly and accommodating and food was very good *edit* I just received my food and the server told Bernie they can't make his salad. The wait for him will continue, but as for me, I will probably go home as soon as a finish this Salmon. Luckily Bernie is a strong man. *second edit* I left Bernie at the restaurant after I finished my food and he wasn't man enough to wait for his salad so he cancelled his order and came home with me

Yelp
Some of the best food (and wine!) I'd had in a long time--probably the tenderest steak I'd ever had. The service was phenomenal. I wish I could deduct only half a star, however, because the dessert was a shocking disappointment. (Everyone else in my party raved about their desserts.) I alone ordered the raspberry/huckleberry mousse because I'm a sucker for huckleberry. If I had asked for "a bowl of brightly-colored whipped butter cream frosting" I would have no reason to complain, because that's what I got--a neon artificial blue and pink swirl with no detectable berry flavor. It was really surprising to me, because everything else was so thoughtfully and exquisitely prepared. I'll go again, but I'll be mindful of the desserts. So apart from that--a five-star, excellent experience.

Yelp
Fabulous food, nice wine list, quiet and confortable atmosphere. Food is always consistently delicious. The bread they make onsite is some of the best since my last visit to Italy
google avatar

Jon L.

Yelp
Yes, it is a quaint little train car. I totally agree the staff is very accommodating and polite. The problem is simple, the food is very underwhelming. Or should I say basic and lacking and real flavor or style. Passion, palate, or potential is turned OFF in that kitchen! Tragedia.

Dennis R. M.

Yelp
Food was excellent, we had the special, stuffed manicotti and a nice bottle of wine. Service was excellent from a young lady who knows how to enhance the restaurant experience, she got a nice tip. Ambiance is great, nice intimate atmosphere in a railroad dining car. We could actually hold a nice conversation and hear each other. Dress up a little bit and take your SO out for a nice dinner.

Yelp
My favorite Italian restaurant in the Tri-Cities!!!! Excellent service paired with amazing food!

Con J.

Yelp
First time trying this restaurant and WOW! Service was quick and friendly and the food was amazing!! Located just a little off the road this gem can be easily missed. It's an old railcar with beautiful decor inside and very nicely landscaped outside. I will definitely be singing their praises and will be back very soon. Great restaurant for a date/date night! (Your welcome )

Diane F.

Yelp
What a fabulous find! Great food and great service! Fun atmosphere! Highly recommend the tiramisu for desert. Megan was a great host.
google avatar

Jason H.

Yelp
Food was bland, the atmosphere was very good and the waitress did a good job. But the food was sub par for the price and taste was off
google avatar

Jenny W.

Yelp
Everything is delicious. The service can be slow, but just plan a long relaxing meal (something we should all be taking the time to do more often), and you will not be disappointed. Excellent food and a cozy atmosphere.

Dennis C.

Yelp
Good food, the rail car is fairly small but it was a great atmosphere. Pricing is reasonable
google avatar

Yelp
While they were shorthand, the quality of service was lovely and the waitstaff and kitchen worked well together. The food was very good and we will go back!

Yelp
If you are searching for unique and somewhat upscale dining, Monterosso's hits the bullseye. Not only providing their customers great food, this Italian eatery gives a special experience to its visitors as they dine is an old (and adorable) train car! My meal here was pleasant one as the staff were amiable and eager to provide the best dining experience possible.

Michelle D.

Yelp
My favorite restaurant in Tri-Cities. Never had a bad meal there ever. They have a great menu and a great wine selection. If you've never been there you need to go!

Dmitriy T.

Yelp
The food tasted like straight arse, the bread was hard, salad tasted like fish, the chicken dissolves on your mouth.

dean k.

Yelp
Stopped by without a reservation and Jerrica was kind enough to let us in for a quick dinner. Manicotti was the best pasta I've ever had and my friend had the lasagna which he said was the best as well. 10/10 service and amazing food. A true gem of a place. We're from out of town but if I get the opportunity I'm coming back!!!
google avatar

Melody M.

Yelp
The waitress was very nice. Let's talk about the food though. The soup was a pork soup and had maybe 2 pieces of meat and almost no veggies. It was basically all cream broth. The caprese was just sliced tomatoes and mozzarella with no flavor. The main course was a smoked salmon noodle dish and the salmon had the strong old fish taste and just wasn't very good. No one was there when we were and I can see why although again the staff was nice.

Rich T.

Yelp
Took my family here for my 65th birthday. We had another delicious dinner. Everyone loved what they had for dinner. I ate the stuffed pork chop, amazing flavors. Just loved it.

Erin D.

Yelp
This place is so romantic, the staff are knowledgeable, attentive and kind. The pasta is the best I've ever had! I had the Wild Mushroom Capellini with scallops and I thought about this dish many times over after eating it. I was so impressed with this restaurant and always recommend it to others.

Elizabeth W.

Yelp
I placed an order for delivery, and it was okay. The insalata was the best part, and the feta herb dressing is really good. It was small for $8 though. The Bolognese was just okay. It was difficult to detect any ground meat, and it would have benefited from simmering longer to develop the flavors. The celery in it was crunchy, and I detected a warming spice, maybe cinnamon. The bread that came with oil & vinegar for dipping was odd. It seemed like it might have pumpkin in it, and had a very slight sweetness, but it needed some salt. It didn't taste good with the oil and vinegar or the meal. I think I might try the food here again and update my review if it's better.

Yelp
This is our number one place that we like to go for dinner. The train car is so cute and the atmosphere is perfect. The servers are always so friendly, the timing of the courses being brought out is not rushed at all. And they have a new balsamic vinegar every couple of months I believe. They make it themselves and you can buy it by the bottle if you like it. We have 6 different flavors I think.... Haha. The manicotti is our favorite dish, but everything we have tried has been amazing. Definitely recommend to anyone!!
google avatar

Mark E.

Yelp
Nice little hidden Italian place. I ordered the lasagna with a ceasar side salad. The meal also started with some sweet rolls and a tasty oil vinegar. The lasagna was very tasty with the right blend of noodles, cheese and sauce Portioned perfectly so I wasn't hungry or full and the price was spot on Very friendly staff
google avatar

Randy S.

Yelp
We were expecting something out of the ordinary food wise. What we got met our expectations. The steak was the worst tasting and smelling piece of meat I ever tasted and that was after one bite! Ordered medium rare and got well. The smell was putrid! The spaghetti was ok but just ok! The wine and service was exceptional!

Sarah T.

Yelp
I tried Monterosso's after following them on Instagram. It did not disappoint and I've been back three more times in the last few weeks. Their bread, Italian wine and salad with the creamy feta dressing is delicious. I've had brunch and three dinners here and every main entree is excellent. Desserts have been unique and good. I loved the tiramisu.Atmosphere is quaint and the wait staff is very friendly.
google avatar

Bellamy S.

Yelp
Expensive and not really worth it. $20 for a chicken Cesar salad with 3 tiny pieces of chicken is ridiculous. $7 for a side salad that was only Romaine lettuce and a dusting of Parmesan and lot of cinnamon or nutmeg? . Can't say I'm impressed. I normally get Casa Mia but wanted delivery. Wont eat here again.
google avatar

Nurse Mindy S.

Yelp
Well, yelp reviews failed us here. It's hard times, I realize, so take out doesn't always translate well. Maybe that is what happened here...but in everything we ordered, there was an excessive amount of some spice I just can't put my finger on, cardamom? I have some Italian cooking experience and it's such a fabulous cultural cuisine, with so much variation. We had bolognese with meatballs, supposedly with lots of parmesan but just a chunk of mozzarella on top. My husband had "sausage stuffed mushrooms" but did not identify any sausage in it. His tortellini portion was disproportioned to the price. The bread has that same something spice overpowering it, and the oil and balsamic did not compliment it, nor tone down the flavor enough, for it to be palatable. Two people, ticket $60, and we have most leftover. It's super cute from the outside and a nice outside eating area, closed for now, of course.

Yelp
This is a fabulous restaurant. If you order something and didn't like it...it's because it's a dish you don't like. The "Classic Insalata was excellent. The Scampi Bello was delectable.

John H.

Yelp
Food was col and the portions were small. Very disappointing seafood platter was minimal

Teresa L.

Yelp
I really wanted to try this charming little place and had high hopes. The food was very good but hot pasta was served on a cold plate so it didn't stay hot. In minutes I was eating cold food. The experience would've been totally different if the plate had been heated before the food was served. Id like to go back and share my thoughts with them. I'd really like to give them another shot because the food was good.

Aaron W.

Yelp
Great food, great atmosphere, great service. Would highly recommend to anyone looking for a great Italian experience.

Alan E.

Yelp
Mediocre tasteless stale bread served with their appetizers. The food is just not that great. It's all about dinning in an old train car. There are better places to go. Nice friendly staff decent wines.

T C.

Yelp
Excellent food. Has always had a special romantic setting. Happy to do corkage so perfect spot for wine tourists. Will be back very soon.

Steve C.

Yelp
It was pretty good. They were really busy that thought. It was a little expensive for how the food tasted. We prefer Europa in Kennewick.

Yelp
Cozy Italian restaurant. Hospitality was outstanding! I had the Surf and Turf special with my daughter and it was excellent--Filet Mignon over a bed of angel hair past with an awesome sauce and scallops on top. My husband had the manicotti--it was delicious!!! I finished his left over the next day and it was pretty fulfilling! We'll be back the next time we visit. Yummmm!!!

Tien T.

Yelp
Excellent food with unique dining experience. I had the Vincisgrassi Three Cheese Manicotti, my husband had the seasonal salad and the Blue Cheese Filet Mignon with added scallops, the kids had the seasonal soup and spaghetti with meatballs. The Vincisgrassi was just perfect, the veal was so tender and the cheeses made it creamy delicious. My husband loved his filet mignon & scallops, very tender and juicy. The salad had fresh greens and the dressing was just right. The meatballs and sauce in the spaghetti were flavorful and delicious. The soup tasted rich, tangy, and creamy. The food was pricy but worth every penny. We ended up having the seasonal dessert too (tasted like a chocolate creme) before going elsewhere for dessert (Crumbl Cookies).

Yelp
There's a warm, family atmosphere about this place. I came in at a time when there weren't many people there, so I was well taken care of. Food and beverage selections were excellent. Dishes taste homemade. There's a warm, family atmosphere about this place.

Yelp
Dining in a Train Dining car has always been fun for me. So seeing that this Italian restaurant was in one made it so much better. Was in the area playing some golf and wine tasting and wanted Italian food. My sister pulled this one up. Had high ratings so off we went. Pulled up to a Dining Car. Not much to look at from the parking lot but go around and it is cute. Stairs are steep but once inside wow. Just needed the movement. Food was outstanding, service was great. And it brought back memories for my older sister, because she use to be a stewardess on the train between Seattle and Chicago.

Dustin L.

Yelp
Capresse salad for appetizer, mozzarella was great, tomatoes were perfectly ripe and served with an Italian dressing that was amazing. Had sausage tomatoe soup with my entre of smoked salmon capenelli. Soup had the right amount of spice to the sausage that comes after you fully get the flavors that went into the tomoto base. The sausage was prepared just right so that every bite you got pieces of meat without being chunks. The capernelli with feta sauce was so delicious, the smoked salmon did not overpower the dish and the sauce was the perfect consistency to keep the noodles together on your fork without being too thick. Had the cheese cake with raspberry sauce. Very delicious and well made, crust is a little on the thicker side but isn't hard or crunchy and the raspberry sauce is what really made the dessert. Wife isn't fan of cheesecake and had the tiramisu, A-MAY-ZING! the flavors where great, the cake was so light and fluffy you couldn't even tell the separation from topping and body of the dessert. Was like eating an espresso cloud of wonderfulness!

Yelp
Cute, unique get away. My husband and I came here for a date night here because we had talked about eating here for a long time. The waitress Hannah was very a great hostess letting us know about the dinner special. It was some goat cheese sauce something which immediately lost my interest lol. I don't like goat anything. The waitress asked if we would like some bread. She mentioned that they had 2 kinds and brought us one of each with a raspberry balsamic olive oil to dip it in. We gobbled that down and asked if we could have another. The waitress brought back one of easy bread this time. So I'm not sure why that was. I went with the frisilli dish with squash/zucchini/ scallops in a white wine sauce. I'm not sure if it's just me but I don't think there was any sauce because it seemed like it was pretty dry for supposedly having sauce. My husband went with a mushroom and added sausage to his garlic cream pasta. His was the best one! I wish I would have gotten the garlic cream sauce with my dish. It was $87 for our 2 entrees and 2 beers each. Fun experience but it's kinda pricey for my liking. The lack of wanting to give us another couple pieces of bread was kinda weird because we were starving by the time our meal was finally done.
