The Best Places to Eat in the Marina, San Francisco | Eater SF

"San Francisco’s dedicated pinseria expanded with a second location in the Marina and that means you can now make a reservation at the second outpost for brunch, lunch, and dinner six days a week. The move is to order a couple of antipasti (perhaps the roasted cauliflower and grilled octopus) and a couple of pinsa to share. You can’t go wrong with the Maranella, covered with layers of mozzarella, broccolini, and spicy pork sausage." - Dianne de Guzman

Having been to the Montesacro in Walnut Creek & loved it, this Marina location lived up our high expectations. Authentic and not only are the pasta and pinsa pizzas divine, the appetizers are unique and tasty. We enjoyed the spinach salad with sliced persimmons and the sardines. Service was friendly and attentive. Cozy vibe. Wish the owners can open a few restaurants on the Peninsula too!

Google
Wonderful meal, beautiful atmosphere, and excellent service. They were able to make a simple vegetarian red / pomodoro pasta for us that was incredible, and the cacio e pepe was delicious. Bread was good but wish it had been warm. The fried risotto balls with smoky mozzarella was good but it would've been better had they been on a bed of red sauce (like the one in our pasta!) - they were just a little too dry. Olive oil and the chili olive oil were both so delicious with a great flavor. Amazing time and would love to go back!

I saw this place on instagram and I knew that I had to try it. The food was delicious the pesto pasta was so creamy and flavorful. Make sure that you order the pizza and not the pinsa or at least know the difference between them so you get what you want.the place should explain the customer the difference, both are delicious but very different. The place looks neat and service is good they have indoor and outdoor tables enough for big or small groups. Come to try it!

Google
Great Italian restaurant in Marina. Top cocktail bar, and fine dining. 10 bar stools. 11 tables inside, and outdoor seating. Good for small and medium size parties. Unique cocktail menu. My favorite is the Negroni Bianco. Jacob and Matteo, and Luigi are really nice.

Google
Came for a group dinner. House bread olive oil was worth it. Octopus was tender and the sauce was definitely worth saving to dip bread. I thought the pasta was cooked well but the sauces were too rich for me. My friends loved them. I really liked the bread for the pinsa. Panda cotta had really good texture though I’m not sure I’m a fan of the olive oil.

Google
A lil gem in the Marina, Montesacro has really transported peculiar Roman cuisine to the area. With such a varied menu, while still holding on to their roots, Montesacro offers an array of deliciousness. We went here for dinner and were warmly welcomed by their manager Nick, he is an absolute delight to talk to and shared some of his experiences and recommendations. I had their lychee martini and was completely blown off by the amazing hues of lychee, citrus, and spirits, all mixed together to make a perfect concoction. One can definitely go here just for this drink and a pinsa, and your eve is set. It's that good of a drink! I also tried their bergamot gimlet, the tantalizing flavors of secco and italicus bergamot makes this drink unforgettable. I was very impressed to get 2 back to back amazing cocktails. We skipped starters and went for the tormaramcio to accompany our drinks. I can't praise this pinsa enough. It had just the perfect cloud-like crust. It wasn't doughy or too heavy. The piquant taste of the soppressata mixed with cheese and a light tomato sauce and basil makes up for a delightful flavor that will linger on for a while. I highly recommend the tormaramcio pinsa and can't wait to try the other pinsas on their menu. The quantity too is very impressive, and it can be split between 3 or 4 as an appetizer as well. For the main course, we ordered the cacio e pepe and lamb. One of the best cacio e pepe I've had, cheesy and creamy indulgence to it finest. The lamb had a burst of flavors, and even though we ordered well done, it was very succulent and not chewy at all. I wish the quantity was more, as i couldn't have enough of it. I will surely be going back to try other items from their menu and the cocktails. They are a definite 5/5.

Amazing Italian place. Fantastic Food and great service. The Manager Nick and all the staff are so welcoming and helpful. All of our dishes were delightful and satisfying. Highly recommended.

Google
The best grilled octopus I had in a really long time. Grilled to perfecto and the light sauce complemented the dish perfectly. The guancciale and honey pizza was super good too. Special mention to the leechi martini. The flourless chocolate cake was ok. To be fair the waitress recommended other options but we were craving chocolate. Service was very good too. Definitely will come back for the octopus and try other option on the menu.

Yelp
this review isn't 100% fair because i couldn't try their pizza and most of their pasta options because of my gluten allergy...but from what i ordered the pasta was delicious! i never had such good gluten free pasta before. the noodles were so chewy and the beef veal sauce was light and not too salty or greasy. it came with a dollop on cheese on top as well which was a perfect addition to the dish. i loved that they had gluten free bread as an option as well which also tasted pretty solid! the service was amazing and i loved how the waitress we had was so passionate about every item on the menu. the ambiance of the restaurant is also so romantic and beautiful. can't wait to go back when my allergies get less severe and try more of their food!

Yelp
Viviana invited me back after my last review. The chef brought out an array of dishes and everything was absolutely delicious! Our favorite was the paella and Maiale. The pork shoulder fell apart in your mouth and was so flavorful! Each dish was seasonal and we had a lovely selection of fresh seafood. Thank you Viviana!

Yelp
I have been to Montesacro a few times. If you only get entrees they are good but it leaves something to be desired. They are pretty expensive and small portion size. One time when I came they were doing a panzanella salad as a special for an app and that was amazing. Otherwise, I feel everything has been good, but nothing I couldn't get at another Italian restaurant in the marina. Actually, except for the gnocchi, which was very good. Their service is great and they have a cozy dining room.

Yelp
Having eaten at Montesacro SOMA many times, we were excited about Montesacro Marina. So when some friends asked us to check it out we were all over it! We started with the pork Porchetta, Slow Roasted Pork, Extra Virgin Olive Oil, Sea Salt, Fennel and Oranges, Olives. The oranges, fennel and pork was a heavenly combination! Second was the CARBONARA. Rigatoni, Egg Yolk, Guanciale, Pecorino, Black Pepper. Perfect. Loved the Rigatoni! Next came the Roman Pinsas: CLASSIC MARGHERITA - Tomato, Mozzarella, Basil and the MONTESACRO - Potato, Artichokes, Lamb Sausage, Buffalo Mozzarella, Chili All fantastic!! The wine pairings and service were heavenly!! We'll be back!!

Yelp
The service was excellent, kind, and welcoming! As for the new menu items, the CARCIOFI & ANATRA DUO were favs! Not sure what the fish/collar dish was called but it was also very good! The homemade bombolone and espresso martinis were a perfect way to end the night!

Yelp
We ate at Montesacro in the Marina again today, tried their new menu and really enjoyed it very much! The artichokes and squash supplì appetizers were amazing, with great flavors, textures and presentations. We also loved the squash-mushroom lasagna and pork main dishes which had some great flavors and high quality ingredients. We paired our dinner with Negroni cocktails which were also superb, with the white Negroni definitely making quite an impression visually. The team was amazing: they checked in with us often to ensure we were enjoying the food and experience and we got to meet the new Italian Chef. We look forward to trying more of his new dishes and coming back to this restaurant again soon!

Yelp
I started the new year with brunch on New Year's Day here. We were seated at a window table that had a nice view of outside & was decorated with holiday lights. They have a brunch menu that includes bottomless cocktails for $23 (choice of mimosa, Aperol Spritz, espresso martini or Bloody Mary). I started with a mimosa & my friend had an Aperol Spritz. Yum! For starters, we had the pulpo, which is tender & flavorful. We also shared a kale salad (to be healthy). I had the eggs Benedict which featured prosciutto. The eggs were perfectly poached and the hollandaise sauce was yummy. My friend said that she enjoyed her steak & eggs. We had several more cocktails (since they were bottomless). Excellent service from our server who was very nice & made some menu suggestions too. We weren't rushed & were able to ring in the new year with a great brunch.

Yelp
Came here the other night for a nice family dinner- wow! Was blown away by the hospitality. Our waitress was amazing. We started with the Octopus salad- I had the rockfish and it was spectacular! The GM gave us amazing recommendations for our trip to Rome! We will absolutely be back.

Yelp
I've been to the SOMA Montesacro, but wanted to check out this one. The atmosphere is super swank. They said they have a new chef from Italy, and the menu is different than the one in SOMA, where they are more focused on pinsas. We got the spinach salad, octopus and artichoke appetizers, which were all delicious and amazing. I got the pork cheek gnocchi but with gluten free penne instead, which was very good, although I think the penne could be better (I eat Veneziane brand at home, which is better than what they used). We also got a gluten free baguette which was really terrible. The pinsas were a bit disappointing as well ... not terrible, but just sort of OK. Service was OK with a lot of waitstaff who were friendly, although my waitress told me the gluten free pasta was rigatoni, and it turned out to be penne. Get the non-pinsa stuff here ...

Yelp
I came here with a small group of friends for an early dinner at 5:30pm. There was a slightly older crowd there already having their dinner. The restaurant was very cute and they have outdoor seating too. We ordered Cauliflower salad - the roasted cauliflower was good and it was refreshing. Croquettes - rice, tomato and cheese. Really crispy and it was tasty! Pesto Gnocchi - the texture was fluffy! Squid Ink bucatini with clams - I loved the texture of this fresh pasta. Strong seafood flavor. Roasted eggplant pizza - the crust is exactly what I look for in a pizza. I thought that it was lacking some salt. All the ingredients were fresh and simple.

Yelp
Slightly disappointed after seeing all the wonderful reviews. 5/5 for service! 3/5 overall for the food (maybe because of the high expectations?) Service was quick and attentive. The table next to us was celebrating a birthday, and I don't think I've seen waitstaff more patient or more enthusiastic in helping to celebrate her birthday. Props to them! Lychee martini- 5/5 honestly don't think I've ever tasted a lychee martini that went wrong Amatriciana- 3/5 nice chewy noodles, on the saltier side. A bit forgettable. Centocelle- 2/5 sounded delicious in theory, but ended up tasting like 5 separate pizzas. Quite a lot to put on one pizza when none of it really went together Arancini- 4/5 probably my favorite of the meal (my partner, not so much) I might describe it as fancy Mac and cheese balls

Yelp
Literally my favorite restaurant and pizza in the city. I've typically been going to the one in Soma, but it's bordering Tenderloin so I'll be coming to this spot from now on. I'll say I prefer the decor at the Soma location tho, it feels very rustic Italian, which I love. This spot is still very nice but it doesn't have that Italian cozy feeling. Anyway, I always order the same pizza, the Torpignattara- mozzarella, potato, pesto, pine nuts and lemon zest. I've had other pizza's here but they didn't stand out to me like this one. My most recent time, we ordered the Mortadella app called Focaccia Der Muratore. It was so simple but so good, it came with a generous amount of mortadella. We also tried the Roasted Chicken, they let us know it would take 20 minutes to cook but it definitely took longer than 20 mins. Regardless, it was worth the wait. It was soooo tender and juicy. I would order it again for sure. My only feedback would be the service was a little confusing, we were helped by everyone. Sometimes that can be confusing when I don't know if we have a designated server or if it's just full service from everyone. Soma location, I was always introduced to our designated server. None the less, we were always helped right away and they were very quick and friendly. I also noticed they do not have heater outside on their outdoor seating. Hopefully they get that, because that neighborhood can get cold.

Yelp
Yummy! Montesacro does great pinsa and some other dishes: usually a nice walk-in option for a weekend evening. We got the arancini (5/5), the pinsa with broccoli raab (4/5), and the pasta with seafood (2/5). The arancini were great -- crisp and hot and savory! Definitely order these. The pinsa was good too, but I found the crusts extremely hard, maybe too hard even. I know pinsa is not the same as pizza -- but something made chewing these crusts a challenge. I thought the pasta was good albeit too al dente. We found it could have been cooked a touch more and still had the hard white line inside. Service here is average -- not overly nice yet not rude. I'd say for the price I'd expect the food to be more groundbreaking, but it's good nevertheless!

Yelp
Walked in late on NYE after a movie. Most tables were finishing a 7 course traditional Italian fish NYE feast. There was a warm inviting feel to the room. My friend and I were offered a shorter menu and quickly ordered to get the order in before the kitchen closed. Learned there is a new chef, trying new things, and we will be back to experience whatever the new chef tries, because it was delicious and fun.

Yelp
Saw Montesacro's happy hour featured in a reel and I knew I had to come in for those sweet deals! Only problem, the deals were made to look a bit sweeter than they actually are. So, here we have another case of expectations that weren't met. Good: -Both the indoor seating and the parklettes were really nice! We sat in the parklettes, and you almost didn't event realize you were on the street in SF. They weren't too loud, and felt clean. -The happy hour apertivo deal was great, $8 for any of the apertivo/spritz drinks, as well as house wine and a pilsner on tap. I ordered the spagliato and hugo spritz and enjoyed both - perfect for summer sipping! Meh: -Pinsetta Margherita, while this actually tasted really good, it was so small. I wouldn't have been as disappointed if the reel I saw didn't show a full Pinsa but advertise their $10 happy hour pinsa's. Probably better off getting a full one than the happy hour since 1 full one is cheaper than 2 of these tiny ones. -Service was nothing special, not really friendly or welcoming. We often sat there for a while with empty glasses before getting helped, mind you we were the only two people there. -Suppli al telefono, also known as mozzarella rice croquettes. They were fine, they were a decent size and had a good crisp to them, but really nothing special, and I wouldn't get them again. Bad: -The charcuterie plate, also called the Tagliere misto. This was thoroughly disappointing. We weren't told what the items were when it were delivered, but the meat was mortadella and I couldn't tell you what the cheese was, because I've never had a cheese that tasted quite like it. It tasted chalky and like hay on a working animal farm. We tried so hard to make it better with the honey and the meat, but there was no getting past that flavor or smell. Probably won't come back here, though if I did if would be for one of those happy hour spritz's.

Yelp
This was my first time going here and I went for brunch. I ordered a frittata (as pictured) and was very disappointed. For $19 I'd expect something a bit more sophisticated or at least better quality. I ended up not even eating it. The bottomless brunch experience was fine but our waitress barely came around, and didn't let us know that the bottomless started for everyone when the first person ordered. We had one person arrive 30 + mins late, so that would've been nice to know. We were the only party there, so it was a bit confusing why we got such little attention from our waitress and no explanation as to how the bottomless worked. They were also out of bloody Mary's, but our waitress didn't tell us until after we ordered. My friends got the pinsas and said they were good. Honestly I wouldn't come back here, though the bottomless was a good deal for $23.

Yelp
I have been once a while back and I remembered it quite better. Service was good and the bartender made really well done and good cocktails. Food choices on the menu seemed very limited and nothing of what we ordered was delicious nor memorable. The Pinsa i felt was also not as good as i remembered it to be, heavy on the sauce this time but i could have just been the way it is supposed to be, not sure. The wine choices are good. I am not quite convinced I would run back here but maybe we will go again in a few months if we happen to be out for a casual evening to see if things got better. Perhaps sitting at the bar and have 1-2 dishes there is the way to go without having to commit to a full meal. Overall it seems quite busy every time i drive by so they must be doing something well.

Yelp
Food prob tastes better if you're drunk on wine. I don't drink wine. You know how it is; small portions, small chairs, etc... They had apparently changed chefs at this location between the time my wife had previously been here and the time I went, of the 2 dishes she wanted me to try, neither were on the menu. so it was tiny, 'pizzas,' and an octopus ceviche like dish which I could have eaten in 2 bites, lol.

Yelp
I came here for a birthday celebration and loved the ambiance, service, and food! They brought out a birthday dessert, which was a nice touch to the end of the meal. Very heavy, but well worth it and delicious. The cocktails were delicious: dirty martini, espresso martini, and specialty cocktail. For appetizers, we ordered a margarita pizza and for dinner, we ordered the ravioli dinner special, and cacio e pepe. Wonderful meal, beautiful atmosphere, and excellent service!
google avatar

Yelp
Really adorable Italian restaurant in the Marina! I think the biggest reason I liked this place was because of the ambiance. The restaurant is on the smaller side which makes it a very intimate experience which I personally loved. We were greeted by a very friendly hostess who seated us right away! Throughout the night, the staff was super friendly and actively checking in if we needed anything. We also got to hear a little bit about their favorite dishes and more about the restaurant itself. We had the Cacio e Pepe which was great but I wish was a bigger portion and had a bit more cheesy flavor. The pizza crust was phenomenal for those who like more doughy pizza but I wish there were more broccolini and turkey sausage bits since it was a little heavy on the mozzarella. Overall, I think this is a wonderful restaurant if you're looking for a fun date night or casual dinner with friends!
google avatar

Kaylee P.

Yelp
Disappointed from all the great review. Amazing service and good ambiance. The bread was the best part of the meal. Cacio e Pepe: too salty and clumpy. Still quite delicious but not sure if it's worth the hype. ($19) See bass: dry and flavorless ($29) Panacotta: Topped with too much olive oil which isn't wanted in a dessert. There's not really any sweetness or milk flavor for the jelly, it tastes more like an olive oil jelly. Surprisingly bad, I've never ordered dessert at a restaurant that I didn't even want to eat more than a bite. Overall the restaurant is clean, comfortable with great service. The food is not good enough for a second try.

Yelp
Bad service, tasteless food, overpriced. We ordered several dishes to get a sense of the menu and they were all disappointing. Service was slow and disorganized.
google avatar

Erin K.

Yelp
We went early back in March during spring break -- by early I mean 4:30pm because we were still on eastern time. My three boys who are 12, 10 and 8 with very different tastes absolutely loved it and my pickiest eater is still talking about it -- says he wants to go back even though we live on the east coast. (That's part of the reason I'm leaving the review now.) It was on the pricier side for us but worth the splurge. We found the staff to be very attentive to a mom and three boys (husband was working and couldn't join). I enthusiastically recommend this restaurant.
google avatar

John B.

Yelp
Ordered delivery, what landed was two tiny portions of dry pasta and a bone-dry arancini variation. The carbonara and the puttanesca were basically lacking any flavor or salt. Nothing was seasoned. One star only for the pasta tasting kind of fresh.
google avatar

Ilona M.

Yelp
This is a good restaurant, but I don't know if I'd return just because of how absurdly overpriced it is. We sat outside because we had a little dog with us. They get brownie points for being super dog friendly (the server even brought out water for the dog without us asking - that was so nice!) but I subtract those points for not having heaters outside. Come on, it's the Marina - it's gonna be cold pretty much no matter the time of the year. We ordered the tomato risotto croquettes which were super delicious. They only give you 3 of them though - nothing bugs me more than giving an uneven amount of shareables. We shared the cacio e pepe and the Grottaferrata pinsa with added burrata. I'd say these dishes, while good, tasted like they could have been done anywhere. Thats to say that it was good food, but nothing stood out to me about them. We ended the evening with the pistachio pinsa which was the true winner. Such an original flavor, so good! I wish the pinsa bread itself was softer though. Overall, as much as I love a good Italian spot, I don't love overpaying for food that doesn't need to cost that much. We essentially paid $200 for pizza and pasta, which is definitely unnecessarily expensive. Cute spot though! I don't know if I'll ever be back, but I am glad I tried it out!

Yelp
Great Pinsa! Pinsa is a type of Roman pizza with other flours in it, and it's very light, fluffy and well charred. We shared 3 kinds, the best was Guanciale and standard Margharita. The manager/owner was very Italian and treated us very well Appetizers were also good, we had Octopus and a stuffed Pinsa with amazing mortadella (I'd pick this up as a sandwich for one, it's soooo good). Good desserts, pana cotta, and a flourless chocolate cake. Service was good, will return. Atmosphere was great, very nice looking place. It was pretty empty at 7 but started to fill up around 8. If you don't drink it's very reasonably priced.

Yelp
Came here for Happy Hour with my family, 4-5pm. Great food at reasonable prices all the time, but even nicer deal during this special hour. Wonderful service, staff were all friendly and smiling, and they really took care of us well. 2 kinds of olive oil at the table, including one with a hot chili oil (caution, spicy!). Pizzas (pinsas) are sliced fresh at the table. So glad this is in my neighborhood, and very happy to come back here to try all the other items.

Yelp
I was so excited to see this location in the Marina as I was driving on Lombard. I've been to the downtown location for lunch a few times, but it isn't somewhere I would want to go in the evening or when it's dark. The Marina can be so challenging for parking, but closer to Lombard makes it easier. Last night we went and almost no one was there. On a Saturday night! Have people not discovered how amazing this restaurant is?! Everything we had was delicious! We started with some fantastic margaritas of all things. They just sounded good, and they were fantastic! They also had my son's favorite - Mole Cola, so he was happy. Then we got the bread basket (a must!!), the suppli, chicory salad, and the tonno salad. We wanted to try so many things, but kept it to those. We loved them all. Then we got two margherita pizzas and two pastas -- the gnocchi and the caccio e pepe. Incredible. I love their hot chili oil on my pizza. We can't wait to go back. There are more things on the menu we want to try, but the pizza is SOOO good!

Yelp
Montesacro is a super cute, romantic, date spot. Or for any other somewhat special occasion, I'd highly recommend. The reason I say special occasion is that it is a bit pricey, and is a bit dressier in terms of the atmosphere. Their food is absolutely delicious. From their pizza's to their main courses And several appetizers, most notably to me, the Arancini, are all amazing options. You can't go wrong ordering something on this menu. Every time I go all see waiters bringing food out to the table next to me and wish I'd ordered that as well. It all looks so good! And it tastes even better! They have a cute Parklet for outdoor seating, but it's a busy street full of a lot of restaurants with outdoor seating so I prefer to sit inside where it's a bit more intimate.

Laurie H.

Yelp
We had a great meal here. The pinza are delicious. The service was very warm. The only issue was that one of the specials, a rock fish, was delicious but the portion was very small.

Yelp
Came here with a group of 7 on a Friday night. We thought the service was great. The wait staff was super attentive and very friendly. The ambiance is perfect for a date night with dim lighting and low music. It won't be a cheap date though. A pasta dish is going to run you about $20 and a glass of wine another $18. I won't harp on the price too much since "this economy" is a bit wonky and it's hard to tell if the restaurant thinks the food is worth that much or they're just trying to get by What stood out: carbonara, amatriciana, cacio e pepe, pinsa al pistacchi Not a fan of: espresso martinis, cauliflower, calamari Cacio e pepe: after being disappointed by a few appetizers, this dish was redeeming. The pasta to sauce ratio is perfect. Pasta was Al dente and the sauce was rich. Just the right amount cheese and pepper Pinsa al pistacchi: wow. I'm not a big dessert guy but this was great. Kinda like a beignet. A crunchy pastry topped with sugar and stuffed with pistachio. An ideal sweet and savory end to the dinner I didn't try the Amatriciana or the Carbonara, but my friends did and thought they were great I'm going to avoid the cauliflower in the future. The presentation was nice and I was excited to bite in but then very surprised that it was served cold. The flavor was ok, but cold cauliflower with a few added textures wasn't my ideal experience I was also disappointed by the calamari. I'm used to fried, so this was probably healthier but didn't hold the same flavor and obviously different texture. There was a faint (and lingering) spice but doesn't really add anything positive to the dish They have an italian take on the Espresso martini. Unfortunately, I wasn't quite prepared for the twist. I think what got me was the vermouth. While standard in a normal martini, I don't think I've had it in an espresso. Grait Grappa is the main liquor. I've never had it on its own, so not quite sure how it contributed to the taste. I like the concept, but if you're going for the traditional SF espresso martini, this isn't going to be that

Camryn M.

Yelp
The worst Italian food in SF. Horrible service, cold food w/ small portions, poor service & charged us incorrectly. Extremely disappointed in the service AND food here. I brought friends from out of town here and every aspect of our meal and service was disappointing. After they brought the wrong food, charged us incorrectly, & gave slow service we weren't even offered any type of adjustments. I hope the manager reaches out because this was truly embarrassing to bring friends here. 0/10.

Yelp
Been here many times as I used to work right around the corner. Everything is good, but by far my favorite thing they have is the trippa. Wonderfully soft with good bite and a great sauce to accompany it. Was very sad to learn that it is taken off the menu and I await it return so I can show my friends my favorite dish here.

Yelp
This new Italian restaurant opened up in the Marina on Steiner and it was fantastic! Reminded me of being in NY with true authentic Italian food. Our waiter Simone was incredible. He took great care of us and brought up his personal favorites/recommendations and I am so glad he did because we got to try a lot of different things I normally wouldn't order. He brought out the cauliflower first which was delicious, it was cold which I wasn't expecting since it was charred but the flavor on it was great. He then brought out the pork shank I believe-normally I wouldn't order it but it was actually really good with the focaccia he recommended. We then got the cacio e Pepe which you can never go wrong with and tried one of their pinsa's. Their pinsa is different than regular pizza and it's super light which I loved. Lastly he brought out a little birthday drink since we were celebrating my birthday. Can't wait to come back and try more things!

Yelp
Dentist: "Now, Cherylynn you have to be very careful for the next several weeks...soft foods only AND chew on your left side." Me: "SAY LESS....Pinsa time!" After a root canal today, I decided to treat myself to pinsa. What is pinsa? It's an ancient Roman flatbread, a healthier alternative to pizza because it's lower calorie, lower carbs, and lower fat from the ingredients and special prep. BUT, don't worry...it's bomb and doesn't taste like gluten-free punishment. Soft opening last Thursday is Montesacro Pinseria's second location in SF. They're open for takeout, indoor dining, and outdoor dining (dog-friendly). Rezzies available on Resy. M E N U Antipasti, pinsa, pasta, entrees, and desserts. The housemade pastas and entrees are exclusive to this SF location (in partnership with 54 Mint). Link to menu: https://bit.ly/3mtXDpX. Beer & wine only. F O O D * Porchetta: Herb-Roasted Pork, Extra Virgin Olive Oil, Sea Salt ($16): https://bit.ly/3aBxVNo Flavorful and herbaceous but the porchetta was on the dry side, like turkey breast. * Trippa: Slow Braised Tripe in Tomato and Pancetta, Nepitella, Pecorino Romano ($14): https://bit.ly/3tna5vu Love tripe so this hit! Meltingly soft in a savory+tangy, chunky tomato sauce. So rustic and comforting. We skipped the complimentary bread but def ask for some to sop up the extra sauce. If you love offal, this is a must order! * Casal Bertone: Mozzarella, Crispy Guanciale, Pecorino, Chestnut Honey ($19): https://bit.ly/3znQM97 The exterior crust is delicately crisp with some nice charred bubbling (not hard, dense, or overly chewy) while the inside is light, airy, and pillowy soft. The guanciale (pork jowl bacon) was rich and savory (very generous portion) with the chestnut honey adding a roasty sweetness. With a drizzle of the housemade calabrian chili for some heat...SO bomb. * Abbacchio Scottadito: Cast Iron Lamb Chops, Rapini, Garlic Rosemary Oil ($34): https://bit.ly/3Q7dVTd ***Requested medium rare. Not my dish but I tried two bites. Perfectly medium rare as requested, the lamb chops were tender and juicy with a great seared crust and deliciously rich and crispy [thin] fat cap. Simple and done right; it's one of the best lamb chops I've had in recent memory at this price point. * Pannacotta Al Finocchietto: Vanilla Bean and Wild Fennel Pannacotta, Extra Virgin Olive Oil ($13): https://bit.ly/3xrm79C Firm, silky smooth, and gently jiggly with a subtle fruity, sweetness from the fennel and evoo. Solid ending to dinner. S E R V I C E The staff was incredibly warm, friendly, and attentive. Our server even brought TT a bowl of water and the chef came out to make sure we enjoyed the food. Food service started out prompt but there were some lags later on; it's only the soft opening though so I'm sure they'll ramp up soon. A M B I A N C E Casual date night vibes. Comfortable sidewalk seating (7 tables). Heat lamps available. P A R K I N G Difficult street parking. Overall, great to see Montesacro open up in the Marina because this location isn't scurry like the SoMA/Mid-Market one which is a huge plus. And, while there's no shortage of Italian restaurants in the area, Montesacro def stands out from the rest!

Yelp
My date told me how amazing the Montesacro was in SoMa, so we had to come try their new location in the Marina! I absolutely loved the pasta and pinsa! The pasta noodles were so soft and the sauce was super delicious. The pinsa was fluffy, yet crispy. Ivana, our server, was so friendly and helped talk us through some options on the menu. It's such a cute space and in such a prime location in the Marina! Highly recommend.

Yelp
My bestie and I had the bestttt dinner at Montesacro a few weeks ago, celebrating Galentine's Day! Victor was our server and he was SO friendly and accommodating. We had a great time with our drinks & food. What we tried: - Golden beet salad: LOVED the golden beets with the goat cheese and sunflower seeds. It was a refreshing and tasty start to our meal. - Polpo: the octopus was grilled to literal perfection. I went to Greece & Italy a few months ago and this definitely compares to what I had overseas!! It was super tender and we both were so impressed because it's pretty easy to overcook octopus. - Grilled lamb chops: we both aren't lamb lovers but these grilled lamb chops were cooked medium rare and not gamey at all. The rapini greens that accompanied weren't my fav, but the lamb was the star nonetheless. - Garbatella pinsa: i've had their other pinsas before, but we tried something new today with this tuna pinsa! I've been loving tuna and this was no exception, we appreciated the combo of calabrian chile + pickled onion for the sharp flavors and the textural contrast of the crispy pinsa. - Pistachio cream pinsa: the best end to our meal!! The pistachio cream stuffed pinsa brought me back to Italy--sweet and decadent! We also had some drinks--they have a great wine list, and we loved the dessert vermouth we tried (mancino sakura vermouth). It was sweet with a touch of floral notes from the cherry blossom. I've also had a few of their other pinsas, but I cannot stop thinking about the casal bertone pinsa with the fatty guanciale & chestnut honey! Ahh i'll be back for that one! The honey drizzle is a game changer.

Yelp
Been to their location in SOMA. Decided to try their Marina location. A bit more upscale with a deeper menu than their other location. Everything on the menu was amazing and their staff is great. We'll be back for sure.

Yelp
phenomenal! We've been to Montesacro for Dinner and brunch. The cocktails and wine list is excellent. The service is impeccable and the staff is so friendly! They love our dogs and there's outdoor seating too. The food! Oh the food! We do not eat gluten so we do not go to Italian restaurants but this one is the exception!! The steak, octopus, chicken, salads, vegetable antipasto, charcuterie and flourless chocolate cake are divine! Oh the pannacotta is life changing. This place is a must for excellent Italian food with healthy choices and a beautiful environment!

Yelp
Very nice place for lunch. Wonderful salad and great pizza. Service was excellent. We ate outside and the ambiance inside seemed nice. I will definitely go back sometime for dinner.

Yelp
Excellent pizza, top notch ingredients. It's excellent even for Italian standards. (Said from an Italian born and raised there)

Yelp
I have been to Montesacro several times and will definitely be back. The pizza and brunch are both delicious. They also have outdoor seating. Reservations are easy on open table but in my experience you can walk in as well with no wait. The wait staff is attentive and pleasant. The one area I wish they would improve on is, the wine is too expensive, especially for Italian reds. The cheapest glass I recall being around $16. There should be a cost effective house wine option closer to $10.

Yelp
Came here for 8pm reservations with two friends. The space is small and all the seats were filled. Extremely loud environment, but fun in that same sense. The food was good. Pasta was the epitome or al dente and no complaints about the pizza. I would warn that the Montesacro pizza is spicier than I anticipated. That calabrian chili oil has a lingering spice. The only qualm I have is that our waiter wouldn't stop checking on us (almost every minute). I checked to see if they were closing soon, because it felt like we were being shoved out of the restaurant, and it was still 40 minutes until closing. So we were confused with that behavior, but I will say, another waiter (shorter male), who wasn't ours, was very very kind so mixed emotions here.

Yelp
Montesacro blew away all my expectations! I've only been to one other restaurant that offered pinsa style pizza and Montesacro's was by far my favorite! Each pinsa was cooked throughout evenly with a soft inside and light crunch of the crust. We ordered the Ponte Mammolo, the Maranella, and the Tormarancio pinsas. My favorite was definitely the Maranella - the buratta on the pinsa was amazing. We did order one pasta, the amatriciana - it was good but I definitely enjoyed the pinsas more. The staff was very friendly and attentive. Food service was very fast even when the restaurant was pretty busy. Needless to say I will be back!

Yelp
BEST ITALIAN RESTAURANT IN SAN FRANCISCO!!!! Food - 10/10 Ambiance - 10/10 Service - 10/10 I couldn't have asked for a better culinary experience than I had last night (9/12/23). Montesacro manager Federica Morelli was an artist, creating an incredible dining adventure by recommending everything, from the aperitif, the wine, antipasti, pasta, pinsa, dolci and ultimately, the vini da dopopasto. It was absolute perfection. My only regret for the evening was that I didn't have room for a secondi (the abbacchio scottadito looked amazing). Thank you Montesacro for a PERFECT evening!!!

Yelp
I like the food, but the service is seriously uneven. Some of the staff doesn't even seem to know anything about the dishes they are "recommending."

Yelp
If you're looking for a delicious and authentic pasta meal, Montesacro is your spot! And although San Francisco is saturated with many Italian restaurants, Montesacro stands out with their great service, the use of their flavors, and quality ingredients you can taste. We had a 3-hour brunch here and even came back for dinner the next day. We went to the Marina location situated on a cute street and chose to dine outside since it was a nice day out (although the Marina does tend to get cold/windy so I would definitely bring a jacket). They do have a full bar and we started off with a few of their cocktails and Italian wines. For the appetizers, we had their house-made tomato Soup, polpette di melanzane, and suppli di nduja. For our main dishes we had the cacio e pepe, carbonara, and a special fig and prosciutto pizza off the menu. The highlights for us were the cacio e pepe and the fig pizza. Really simple dishes that stood out because of the use of fresh ingredients. All the food and pastas are made in-house using quality ingredients with excellent flavors. The service was also excellent and we learned a lot about the food and the restaurant history as explained by some of the Italian waiters. Would highly recommend if you're craving authentic Italian cuisine!

Yelp
I was reluctant to like Montesacro since it replaced my beloved Chotto. But they were able to accommodate a large group on a Saturday night, and I'd had a great meal at their original location in SOMA, so we gave it a shot. We were not disappointed. The pinsas (grottaferrata and tormarancio) and pastas (amatriciana and cacio e pepe) were mouthwateringly delicious. The mortadella-stuffed pinsa appetizer was a nice start to the meal. The calamari appetizer was the only thing that was just okay. The real highlight for me was their signature spicy margarita. I haven't had a marg quite like it before and wished I could've had several more. Looking forward to returning so I can try additional menu items!
