Montrose - Review - Abbeyhill - Edinburgh - The Infatuation

"Montrose is a glowing, old 19th-century inn that will lure you in. Part of it may be the flickering candlelight. Or perhaps it will be a spectacular oyster with strawberry hot sauce. Before you know it, you’ll have been seduced with a kumquat martini. At least that was the case for us. Split between two floors—a downstairs wine bar and a Goop-feeling restaurant upstairs—Montrose is one of the most beautiful and exciting restaurants in Edinburgh." - Jake Missing

"Located close to The Palace of Holyroodhouse, this 19th-century former inn has been converted into a wine bar and restaurant by the owners of Timberyard. Soft lighting and exposed stonework give the place a rustic, intimate feel, with diners spread across two floors. On the lower level you'll find the bar, where you can pop in for a glass from the excellent wine list championing lesser-known regions. When dining, you can expect dishes characterised by their big, bold flavours and Scottish produce." - Michelin Inspector

Stopped in for lunch in the wine bar downstairs. The food was just fabulous and the largest collection of natural wines I’ve seen. What a great selection. Every course was delicious - tempura oyster and kimchi, salt cod fritter with seaweed, oxcheek crumpet were our favorites. The bread and yeasted butter were amazing. Highly recommended! Would have given 5 for atmosphere had we eaten upstairs in the main dining room.

Fabulous food which was vibrant, local and AMAZING quality - the oysters and mussels were phenomenal. Plus, when I found the set menu main course *way* beyond my spiciness tolerance, they produced a stuffed ricotta pasta and cream sauce dish as an alternative, just for me! Great attention to detail, friendly staff and fantastic value (very accessible lunch menu) - well worth the trip and glad to see them so busy!

Came here with family this evening and had an exceptional experience. The food was fantastic. The service was warm and welcoming, they bent over backwards to make sure we got our table, which was beyond appreciated. They have a great wine menu, though I opted for their wild rose old fashioned (twice, what more can I say?) Don’t think twice. This is now my favorite restaurant in Edinburgh. Cozy. Comforting. Inviting.

Unusual flavours and beautiful layers of flavours and textures. I had the most incredible dish - saddleback pork with lard that was sweet, silky smooth melting like an ice cream in my mouth. The dish was fresh, smoky and deep. The service by Pauline was top notch. Her knowledge and attention to detail to all the ingredients served was outstanding.

I had the absolute pleasure of celebrating a big birthday at Montrose a few weeks ago. I reserved the upstairs dining room and 24 of my closest family and friends shared an incredible evening. It was one of the best meals I’ve ever had, each of the 4 courses, hors d’oeuvres and oysters and cheeses were incredible. We were served by an incredible team, keeping our glasses filled with wine and plates replenished with food. Pauline, Angus and Sam took such good care of us and Jennie, whom I planned everything through, provided top notch customer service and kindness. I still can’t get over how incredible it all was. If I could do it every year, I absolutely would. Do not miss out on this amazing restaurant. The wine was amazing, the food was unforgettable and the service is unparalleled. This is a very, very special establishment.

I had the pleasure of dining at Montrose Restaurant on Saturday, and it was an exceptional experience from start to finish. The dishes were beautifully curated, showcasing a perfect balance of flavors and presentation that truly delighted the senses. Each plate was a work of art, reflecting the skill and creativity of the kitchen team. To complement the fantastic food, we were treated to an exceptional wine selection curated by Murray, the sommelier. His expertise and recommendations elevated our meal, pairing each course perfectly with wines that enhanced the overall dining experience. A special thank you to Angus, who served us throughout the evening. His attentiveness and friendly demeanor made us feel welcomed and well taken care of, contributing to the overall enjoyment of our visit. The only feedback I have is regarding the cheese course. Typically, when restaurants offer a cheese selection, it includes four cheeses, crackers, and accompaniments. However, at Montrose, this selection comes to £32, which I find rather expensive for just cheese. That said, I can't wait to return to Montrose and experience the magic of their menu and wine offerings again! Thank you !

What a exemplary little find, the food was unique, flavour some and paired together so well and all the staff were incredibly knowledgeable!! Especially the Australian guy with the long hair we were so amazed by his facts about the food and regions and he was also tentative and charming. Would absolutely recommend and will be returning!

Belated review. Went for celebration lunch here in Sept after reading about it in an article on best places for set menu lunches and it did not disappoint. As other reviewers have said - original, distinctive food, beautifully executed in an attractive, understated space with similarly understated but attentive service. We added som extras to the set menu and enjoyed a few glasses of very delicious wine so it was not a cheap lunch, but compared to other places with a similar offering/price point we felt it was worth it. Atmosphere was nice enough but quiet on the day we were there, so missing the buzzy vibe that elevates a space.
