Monumental Market Opens in Jamaica Plain - Eater Boston

"Monumental Market debuted this week under limited hours in the former Monumental Cupcakes space (36 South St., Jamaica Plain), and it joins together three local businesses. The team behind the market includes veteran alumni of Boston-area farmers markets: Kelsey Munger of Lavender Bee Baking Co., Javier Amador-Peña of coffee company El Colombiano, and Chris Antonowich of Light of Day Records. Initially, when news of Monumental Market surfaced last year, plans included ice cream as the third element of the cafe, but the partnership now includes Antonowich, a local musician and brand consultant who began appearing with Light of Day at the Egleston Square Farmers Market in 2018. Monumental Market will showcase selections of vinyl records Antonowich has curated for the space. The cafe portion of the operation features Lavender Bee’s allergy-accommodating baked goods (the entire space is nut-free), including gluten-free and vegan options, alongside El Colombiano’s bagged and brewed coffee, espresso drinks, and specials. The shop will be a base for the businesses, which will continue appearing at local farmers markets. There are limited hours this weekend, with some specials to celebrate the opening, and Monumental Market will launch full hours starting Tuesday, February 18." - Dana Hatic

Monumental Market Will Bring Pastry, Coffee, and Ice Cream to Jamaica Plain - Eater Boston

"A trio of Boston-area businesses are joining forces for a new venture in Jamaica Plain this spring — baking company Lavender Bee, ice creamery Tipping Cow and coffee company El Colombiano will all open under one roof. According to Boston Magazine, they’ll take over the former Monumental Cupcakes location, and operate like a single bakery-cafe to be named Monumental Market." - Tim Forster

My boyfriend & I visited this place today and it was an amazing experience! We are both allergic to peanuts and drove 30 minutes to check it out. Food, drinks and service were amazing, would highly recommend. And everything was NUT FREE!! Thank you to the staff for making this place safe for so many with allergies.

Very cute spot with plants, records, and good drinks and pastries. Loved my London fog and vegan white chocolate strawberry scone

Google
They have the best drip coffee in JP! It packs the flavor of a pour over at the price of drip. Totally worth a visit for their coffee alone (but might as well get a cinnamon bun while you're there).

This place has been an absolute game-changer for me, and I couldn't be more grateful! As someone with severe anaphylactic nut allergies, there's nothing quite like the joy of walking into a cafe, knowing I can safely enjoy any drink or pastry on the menu without fear of allergens. It's a freedom and peace of mind I haven’t experienced in 23 years, which sounds dramatic but is totally true. Plus the staff is fantastic and kind, the food is delicious, and the cafe itself is decorated to perfection. Thanks y'all! 💕

The apple cake was delicious! It was vanilla flavored with bits of apples. I’d recommend the rose garden matcha for a great unique drink. It was floral without being overwhelming.

Google
I feel so happy when I go here. The atmosphere is just really positive. The baked goods are delicious and fresh, the tea is good, the records are fun, they have challah every week from bleckers. It's just really really nice.

Google
I love this little shop. I’ve been coming here about once a week since I moved to JP three years ago, and they’re always so friendly. I LOVE their seasonal drink menu! Today I got the strawberry shortcake iced latte with cold foam 😍 so delicious and not too sweet.

Google
I am so grateful that a place like this exists. As someone with a severe peanut allergy I can never have baked goods. I also have a severe allergy to peas and pea protein which can be a common pairing of allergies. I did find that there are vegan pastries in the same case that are made with butter that contains pea protein so I didn’t feel 100% safe eating the baked goods. If they were to be more separate or the vegan baked goods didn’t contain peas, I would be here every single weekend. The staff was SO nice and went over the top to ensure I knew ingredients. Highly recommend but with caution if you have a legume / pea allergy like me!

Yelp
Highly recommended!!! After I had so much trouble and disappointment with a bakery named Cupcake Therapy, the bakery was an angel to me. I got very welcoming and reliable phone assistants for my custom cake order (I ordered two dozen cupcakes). I did not have that many days ahead of the desired delivery day because of Cupcake Therapy's poor response, which was totally a waste of my time. But Monumental Market takes care of the delivery of small orders like mine. The customer service is just fantastic. I cannot review the taste because this is my first order, but I feel that the bakery will bake stuff with delicate attention. They said the owner has a nut allergy, so the facility is totally nut-free. I cannot wait for the delivery!

Yelp
Excellent place to pick up morning coffees and pastries. Friendly staff, attentive and prompt in completing orders. Not for eating in - small, more for taking out.

Yelp
Good coffee, good service, great concept! I love going here to look at the plants and records while waiting for my coffee.

Yelp
The BEST matcha latte in the city, no question. Also one of the best muffins I have ever had: the donut muffin. Super fluffy and the perfect amount of sweet, it is unique and simply a delight. Kind and attentive staff, chef's kiss spot.

Yelp
Local, kind, delicious, and adorable - what else can I say? I've always enjoyed this JP cafe! They also accept custom cake orders which have been great for birthday celebrations! While there's not many spots to sit (a few barstools inside, patio seating outside during the summer), I don't mind the quick grab and go either! They also sell vinyls, merch and plants (not sure if this is year round), so it's always fun to look at what they're featuring!

Yelp
Cute spot with nut-free backed goods, coffee/tea, vinyl, and plants. There's a lot going on! If you want the full variety of food options you need to get there early- check the hours in general before you go. People working there were very nice and I ordered a ton of baked goods (our friends raves about them and they were seriously delicious). They came in nice boxes but there was no bag for those boxes so bring your own or prepare to buy one of their labeled totes. The London Fog has a nice lavender accent. It's really nice to have an allergy friendly spot in JP!

Yelp
Their nut free baked goods are wonderful- the brownies especially are perfection. We always get goodies from here for our kids' birthday parties so that everyone can have some treats and it never disappoints!

Yelp
Yooooo this place is GREAT! I love their baked goods and I hear their coffee is a delight (I'm not a coffee drinker, so I'm just the messenger here). Grab a lavender lemonade and take a stroll around the pond for a guaranteed good time. The brownie bottom cheesecake is possibly the most perfect baked good that has ever existed. I am confident you'll agree with me if you have it.

Yelp
UPDATE: upping the star count since the management team was responsive and ready to make things right. No need for a refund on my part, but I do appreciate the gesture. -- Eesh, I hate to give anything but love to a small local business, but I think there are better cafes to be found in the neighborhood. I ordered online ahead, something I commonly do nowadays during the pandemic to avoid needing to wait around inside, and something that tends to work pretty smoothly with other local businesses. But when I got there 15 minutes later, it was like I had just walked up to the cashier and ordered right then, nothing was ready for me. OK, no problem- I saw someone walk out as I walked in, so they were probably busy with that, and we're in a pandemic anyway so patience and understanding is always key. I'm then told that the cupcake flavor I ordered was out- OK, no worries, I'll just pick another one. So, a few minutes waiting inside the tiny space on my coffee and cupcake, and then I was on my way. Sadly, the cupcake (chocolate cake with vanilla frosting) tasted exactly like a mediocre grocery store cupcake- overly sweet and stiff frosting, bland and crumbly cake, no flavor anywhere. And what was meant to be a mocha, had zero discernable mocha flavor (am guessing they accidentally made a plain latte instead). Not impressed with either the quality of the goods or the overall experience- and there are so many other solid local spots to grab a coffee and a sweet that IMO Monument doesn't really measure up.

Yelp
Monumental is a great little cafe with friendly staff and interesting baked goods (my main reason for going). JP has a good selection of cute cafes these days. But not all of them have a record store attached, run by nice guy Chris, so a fun 2 for 1 spot.

Yelp
This is such a sweet bakery/coffee shop/record store. I like the cold brew and have tried several of the pastries. To be honest they haven't been my favorite (the brownie and cinnamon roll were dry, the poptarts were too sweet for my taste), but I like the apple cake. They often have vegan and gluten free options as well.

Lydia G.

Yelp
i love the monumental team! so friendly and so kind with such an expertise in making the stuff i like!

Yelp
Fantastic newer coffee option in the community + a black and female owned business. Chai was delicious and earthy, iced cold brew is on point. We got apple cake, banana bread and an apricot pop tart. All A+

Yelp
So happy to discover this bakery and cafe that's safe for my peanut allergic children. The whole place is nut free!!!!!! We tried several items - cinnamon buns, cheesecake bar, doughnut muffin, banana bread, pop tart, and matcha latte and hot chocolate. All of it was super fresh and delicious but the kids loved the doughnut muffins and cinnamon buns the most. I'm definitely here for the pop tarts - so flaky and not too sweet. It was the first time my son could pick anything he wanted from the bakery shelves - so we plan to make this a regular stop on our dessert journey!!!

Yelp
Best little coffee shop around! Delicious baked goods, AMAZING coffee, and vinyl records!! I was in heaven. I drove by out to JP specifically to try this place & it was SO WORTH IT! I wish they'd open up a place on Charles Street in Boston (I'm just being selfish because I live in that neighborhood). What a great concept for a store....Colombian coffee roasted by someone FROM Colombia , baked goods you'll go CRAZY over, and a bunch of records to explore. I'm waiting for them to put out the Christmas selection of vinyl (Elvis, Mariah Carey) but they did have one Charlie Brown Christmas album left! This place is a treasure!! Say hi to Javier when you're in there.

Yelp
I'm LITERALLY obsessed with their cinnamon buns. Huge, juicy, not dry AT ALL. Also the oatmilk latte is the bomb dot com. And my favorite barista is Nahjah. She holds it down on the espresso machine.

Yelp
This is my new go to place for coffee when in JP. Great service and a great selection of Colombian coffees. There's some outdoor seating and the servers are COVID conscious wearing masks.

Yelp
Was looking for a local spot in JP for a quick morning pick me up and stumbled across Monumental Market. Grabbed a cappuccino and zucchini/chocolate chip muffin. Both were great. All baked goods made on premise. Had wonderful variety including gluten free. Also a nut-free zone for those with allergies. Added bonus for vinyl lovers, it's also a record shop. Always happy to support progressive, locally owned business. Only ask would be to add almond milk to the selection as they only had oat milk as an alternative.

Yelp
Peak experience!! Went on a Sunday morning with the weather around high 70s, sun was out but still not fully over the outdoor seated area. Had a slice of blueberry buttermilk cake (yummm), and an iced Americano roasted from the Excelso Bucaramanga beans. The roast was so delicious, mildly citrus but with a deep enough toasty flavor, very well-bodied. I went back in to make note of this roast just so I could remember for next time. Friendly neighborhood service, satisfying pastries and coffee, accompanied by a good book I brought to read - couldn't ask for a better way to start off a summer Sunday morning out in JP :)

Yelp
Pop tarts were delicious! I got one of each cause I couldn't decide and I wasn't disappointed with either! Looking forward to going back and getting more. The guys working there were also really nice! Glad it's in the neighborhood :)

Yelp
Love this small business! I had a delicious goat cheese pop tart and I'm still dreaming of it! Can't wait to try more of their goodies.

Michael F.

Yelp
I love this place! The space is really clean and modern but remains very warm and welcoming. The baked goods are awesome (did I mention there are vegan ones, too, which my vegan friends have confirmed are phenom?) and the vanilla latte is really nicely done. The homemade pop tarts are ridiculously good, too. The staff is great -- friendly, relaxed, and they give great recommendations for anyone who's not sure which item to choose. You can browse for records and listen to music, too. There's also been plenty of hand sanitizer and posted social distancing/masking notice during the pandemic which makes me feel comfortable when visiting. Stop in! Monumental Market has been a great addition to JP.

Yelp
Love their cold brew! The best ever. Will try all others. And the cakes are good, too.

Monica M.

Yelp
This place is beyond great. They care about their customers' satisfaction, as well as the health and safety of their customers and staff. The coffee and pastries are always fresh! The order-ahead works out quite well, but it is always just as quick to order inside. I love the atmosphere inside. The staff is welcoming, and they are always playing upbeat and unique music. I would post photos of their pastries, but I always bite into them before I remember! If you see their photos on social media of the pastries, I promise everything is as good as it looks, if not better!

Josh S.

Yelp
LOVED the cinnamon buns! Purchased the frozen cinnamon bun tray for Thanksgiving and they turned out phenomenally. Instructions were easy to follow and the end product was delicious!

Joe R.

Yelp
Great spot for baked goods, coffee, and such. Friendly people. Cool vibe.

Elizabeth R.

Yelp
I'm obsessed with this place. As a person with a tree nut allergy, I struggle to find bakeries that are safe for me to eat. The baked goods are soooooooooo good. I drive 30+ minutes every few weeks to stock up on treats here. Every friend I've brought to Monumental Market also falls in love. Try the cupcakes!

Susan S.

Yelp
Love that they have reopened. Great baked goods (including GF) and drinks. The cupcakes are awesome. Nice staff.
