I am over the moon for Moonbird! We were fiending for some caffeine after getting dim sum in the area, and stumbled upon this hidden gem. Moonbird occupies the top floor of Southbound restaurant. Once you reach the top of the staircase, you are greeted by a large open space with great natural light, high ceilings accented by Edison bulb string lights, and a charming mix of wood and exposed brick. Did I just describe my perfect loft space? Is it possible that I can I move into Moonbird? Cause I totally would.
The baristas are very cheery and friendly and clearly love what they do. Both of them recommended to me the Mexican Mocha, since it was both their favorite drink. I got a large (16 oz.) for around $5. It had a nice spicy kick to it, that blended nicely with the chocolate. A quick glance at the menu, and I saw they also had drip coffee, a cortado, cold brew, nitro cold brew, hot chocolate, and a few more specialty lattes. If you check out their little chalkboard sign on your way up the staircase to the coffee shop, it lists their seasonal drinks. Girl Scout cookie flavor- inspired lattes, yassss. They offer soy, almond, and hemp milk for a small upcharge. They had a small selection of pastries and other sweets, all of which looked homemade and delicious. I was very full from dim sum, otherwise I would have gotten one. I like that they give you your drink in actual mugs/glasses, unless you are taking your drink to go. It just adds to the home-y vibe.
The space itself is pretty big. We came around 2pm on a Saturday, and there was plenty of seating available. The tables and chairs are all mismatched and vintage...very cute decor. They had a projector playing Tom and Jerry cartoons, which I thought was a nice touch. However, it was not too loud. There were some people doing work on laptops and others studying or reading. I definitely see the appeal of such a chill coffee shop that is not very crowded, and wish I knew about this place back when I was a student and frequented coffee shops on the reg. It seems fairly new, so perhaps word hasn't gotten out yet that this magical place exists. I can't speak for the wifi signal or outlet placement since these were not things I was actively looking for at the time of my visit, but I'll definitely have to be back to do some work here soon. The hours may be tricky, since they are not open very late.
