NYC’s New Restaurant Openings

"Add Moondog, from the chef behind Balaboosta, to the growing list of listening bars in Williamsburg. They’re serving a mashup of Mediterranean and Mexican food and cocktails, and there’ll be DJ sets several nights per week. " - will hartman

At a Moodog HiFi in Bushwick, Mediterranean Tacos Make a Menu | Eater NY

"Located deep in the Bushwick industrial frontier at 119 Ingraham Street, near Johnson Avenue, this subterranean bar is reached past a narrow concrete courtyard filled with tables; stairs lead down to a room decorated with a neon symbol over the bar and racks of vinyl records at the far end. A logo on the aluminum gate shows an eye cradled in a radio telescope, which turns out to be a stylized turntable. The cocktails, courtesy of beverage director Josef Griz, are great, on a menu of eight showcase mixed drinks that have evocative names: a coffee martini ($17) made with vodka and Turkish coffee with a hint of cardamom; the Prickly Tempo Collins (the bar’s take on the Tom Collins) with mezcal instead of gin, laced with prickly pear though the lime is assertive; and When Birds Cry, a tall mixture of mezcal, lime, grapefruit, and mastiha, a liqueur seasoned with pine resin — I kept sipping, hoping some of that stickiness would show up in the drink. Five tacos ($6 to $8) form the heart of the menu. The chicken shawarma was the best, gobbed with aioli blended with an amba, a mango pickle with a wonderfully sharp taste; festooned with pickled carrots, the taco made a lovely picture in its cardboard slot, the chicken slightly gritty with a bit of curry. The lamb taco is notable for its distinct flavor and crunchy shallots on top; the brisket taco is worth ordering for its small cup of a bright green herbal sauce merging chimichurri and zhoug. A couple of empanadas are available ($6), including beef and corn with feta, the latter of which was quite good. French fries arrive dusted in herbs and accompanied by the same amba aioli: they’re irresistible. Skip the mushroom taco, described as "al pastor." The filling was slippery and flavorless; the fish taco is another pass, as it’s overdone with breading. The music included some very nice samba and samba rock from Brazilian Beats Brooklyn, an album from artists who had been featured at Black Betty, a nearby club that closed in 2009 — the music was so good, I’d return just to listen, relax, and eat more of those chicken shawarma tacos." - Robert Sietsema

Moondog - Review - East Williamsburg - New York - The Infatuation

"Moondog, from the chef behind Balaboosta, is on the growing list of listening bars in Williamsburg. They serve a mashup of Mediterranean and Mexican food and cocktails, and there are DJ sets several nights per week. We haven’t been here yet, but want you to know this spot exists." - Team Infatuation

The thought behind every aspect of this place blew us away— perfect sound system and impeccable design. Feels intimate and warm yet spacious. The food is delicious and creative, all at a reasonable price, and the staff took excellent care of us. Would come back for a meal, a drink, to listen to amazing records or to explore their outside space when it develops!

An absolute hidden gem! The attention to detail, the food and cocktails, and that hummus—its texture and flavors: ah-mazing. For melomanos/music lovers, this place is a cultural pitstop when in NY! With a state-of-the-art sound system, local crate diggers spinning vinyl, and international DJs bringing underground parties that last into the wee hours, you’ll feel right at home in community. Can't wait to be back!

No notes for this place. Truly an incredible experience. Highly recommend for date night, a birthday, or just to unwind after a long day.

Yelp
These days I find myself frequenting the chill vinyl bars in Brooklyn versus the crowded and overpriced fancy cocktail bars in Manhattan. Moondog Hifi is the newest addition to my vinyl bar discoveries. Moondog Hifi is off the beaten path, a real hidden gem. The place fits a few tables and an intimate bar. In the back is a shelf of vinyls and a vinyl player that is operated throughout the night. My partner and I came on a Thursday but still enjoyed the selection of experimental house music that was played during our visit. Service is friendly and attentive. The best drink of the night was Turkish Coffee Martini which is what I imagine a good espresso martini would taste like (all of the ones I tried weren't good). My second favorite was the Zaza Gimlet followed by the 'When Birds Cry' cocktail. Overall, all the cocktails were good but I was in the mood for the coffee martini that night. The braised lamb hummus that came with chips was divine smokey fragrant creamy goodness, which makes total sense because the chef who created the menu is the chef of Balaboosta. My partner and I weren't even hungry but we devoured the hummus in minutes. I can't wait to come back on a Friday or Saturday for the DJ events. While my partner and I enjoyed Moondog Hifi on a Thursday, we probably would've had a more immersive listening experience if the DJs had a larger audience to play for. Until next time.

Yelp
Moondog is a new vinyl listening bar that serves cocktails and street food that had just opened up in the East Williamsburg 'hood. From Chef Admony, the menu features Med-Mex small plates - we tried their: +chicken shawarma tacos - with slaw, amba aioli, caramelized onions, and tirchi carrots) +crispy fish tacos - with slaw, Moroccan tomato sauce, and shifka peppers (opting out of the cilantro) +adobo brisket tacos - with slaw, s'chugichurri, pickled red onions, and crispy shallots +the braised lamb tacos - with slaw, baharat mole, pickled red onions, and crispy shallots +brisket hummus - with tahini, crispy shallots, and pickled onions, served with tortilla chips +the corn, feta & mozzarella empanada - with caramelized onions +Argentinian beef empanada - with olives, currants, jalapenos, and s'chugichurri +a side of yucca fries, served with harissa aioli +and, a side of esquites, with corn, lime, and cotija cheese We tried some of their signature cocktails, such as the Prickly Pearita )prepared with blanco tequila, prickly pear, cucumber, and lime), Turkish Coffee Martini (prepared with cardamom-infused vodka, coffee liquer, espresso, pistachio orgeat, and orgeat foam), and the When Birds Cry (prepared with mezcal, mastiha, lime, and grapefruit). Their ambiance was laid-back and comfortable, and the staff were friendly. +vinyls +friendly service

Yelp
Nice place with black brick decor and a very tight sound system. Lots of vinyl on the back wall. Nibbles were very good. We had empanadas and an order of hummus. Interesting cocktail list, including a tasty fig Negroni. Very friendly service.
