We decided to do a quick overnight trip to Milwaukee, where we chose to dine at Morel. This a very cute farm-to-table restaurant in the downtown area that takes pride in their concept.
Overall, it was good, but there were a few things we felt that were missing in our meal, that if they were there, it would have put the restaurant over the top.
For appetizers, the shining star was the lamb carpaccio (heck, probably the best dish of the entire meal). It was the perfect balance of the meaty goodness you look for in carpaccio, balanced with the right amount of acid. We also got the oyster mushroom and polenta. The polenta was well-made, but the dish was a bit one note.
For entrées, we got the pork shoulder, short rib, and lamb shoulder. Our biggest complaint for all three was that they were all very meaty but didn't have something to balance the dish. For example, it would have been great to have a mashed potato or some sort of starchy puree with the dish. I did notice in past iterations that was how the dish was prepared. I loved the brat that came with the pork shoulder, but while tender, the pork shoulder generally lacked seasoning.
The beef short rib was also very tender but could have used more seasoning as well. The lamb merguez was probably the most seasoned out of all the dishes.
Overall, it's a decent option, and the staff is super nice.
