Cash-only spot for coffees and beignets with outdoor seating

"Also in New Orleans I found Morning Call’s beignets to be a superb example of the ideal texture—light and fluffy with an air pocket—and a longtime local favorite that some NOLA historians prefer." - Arati Menon, Megan Spurrell

"Morning Call beignet fans are legion, impressed by the fried to order tender beignets offered in a paper bag, letting a person choose how much sugar to shake over the treat. Now located on Canal Street in City Park, Morning Call offers more than just breakfast, with daily specials and even Irish coffee featured." - Beth D’Addono

"After a forced 2019 closing at its original spot in City Park, the circa 1870 coffee and beignet shop reopened to a new home across from the streetcar terminal at Canal. Sharing a covered porch with neighbor Bud’s Broiler, the new place has room for 200 and was built to suit. Although beignets and coffee are its calling card, Morning Call also dishes New Orleans comfort food, from mini muffulettas and creamy red beans and rice to jambalaya until midnight." - Beth D’Addono

"After months of anticipation, a beloved local mainstay for beignets and cafe au lait has returned to New Orleans: Morning Call Coffee Stand reopened on Saturday, March 27 at 5101 Canal Boulevard (the corner of Canal Boulevard and City Park Avenue). The comeback — finalized by owners Bob and Mike Hennessey after signing a lease in January 2020 and planning the joint space with Bud’s Broiler — follows Morning Call’s closure of its last City Park Casino Building location in January 2019 after six years and a 10-month lease battle with Cafe du Monde. The brand traces its roots to the French Market 150 years ago, moved to Metairie in 1974, opened a 24-hour City Park stand in 2012, and closed the Metairie spot in April 2018 due to rising rent. Designed with nostalgia in mind, the new cafe centers on a familiar bar structure topped by an arched sign lit with bare bulbs, flanked by mirrors to evoke an old-school soda fountain, plus a large covered front patio with ceiling fans and the iconic neon coffee cup sign that went up in late January. In addition to beignets and coffee (including cafe au lait), the menu includes jambalaya and red beans; the shop has applied for a liquor license. Although the sign advertises 24/7 hours, it is currently open daily from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. while coronavirus restrictions remain in place." - Clair Lorell

"The 10-month beignet battle over City Park’s Casino Building finally came to an end in January, with 150-year old beignet outlet Morning Call losing the location it occupied since 2012 to Cafe du Monde." - Clair Lorell
