"After months of anticipation, a beloved local mainstay for beignets and cafe au lait has returned to New Orleans: Morning Call Coffee Stand reopened on Saturday, March 27 at 5101 Canal Boulevard (the corner of Canal Boulevard and City Park Avenue). The comeback — finalized by owners Bob and Mike Hennessey after signing a lease in January 2020 and planning the joint space with Bud’s Broiler — follows Morning Call’s closure of its last City Park Casino Building location in January 2019 after six years and a 10-month lease battle with Cafe du Monde. The brand traces its roots to the French Market 150 years ago, moved to Metairie in 1974, opened a 24-hour City Park stand in 2012, and closed the Metairie spot in April 2018 due to rising rent. Designed with nostalgia in mind, the new cafe centers on a familiar bar structure topped by an arched sign lit with bare bulbs, flanked by mirrors to evoke an old-school soda fountain, plus a large covered front patio with ceiling fans and the iconic neon coffee cup sign that went up in late January. In addition to beignets and coffee (including cafe au lait), the menu includes jambalaya and red beans; the shop has applied for a liquor license. Although the sign advertises 24/7 hours, it is currently open daily from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. while coronavirus restrictions remain in place." - Clair Lorell
