"Longtime butcher shop Morscher’s Pork Store closed for good this week. Owner Herbert 'Herbie' Morscher says the building’s owner, Siegfried Strahl, was ready to close the business. (Strahl is also a partner in Morscher’s; he planned to 'quadruple' the rent beginning in March, according to QNS.) The old-school pork store has been open at its current address since 1957. It’s one of several butcher shops to close in recent years." - Luke Fortney

This is a great old-fashioned butcher shop! Catering to German and Eastern European specialties. Unfortunately, it is going out of business soon. Morscher's, you will be missed!

Google
Morschers Pork Store is the most incredible neighborhood place. The meat is always outstanding, the butchering expert, the staff incredibly friendly. You feel like you're stepping back into the forties. Get the double smoked skin on bacon (please don't ask them to cut the skin off) cook low and slow, and then eat bacon with a crackling edge. Don't forget to tip your butcher!

Google
Beautiful and iconic place, great food and service. Too bad there is an issue with the lease renewal, but I always want to know, understand and find out both sides of the story. We don't know for how much was the rent and for how long was the rent agreement initially, but we all know that during the last couple of years the value of the properties and obviously rent went way up! Ask the questions, get the complete story before you point the finger. It might be that the business owners who are trying to renew their lease at the same terms from years ago are the same ones who are saying that the landlord is a bad guy because he is asking for fair (today) rent. Bottom line I really wish for both sides to reach an agreement and keep the store open!🤞

Google
I used to be their customer for years too and the news upset me as well; loved that store! BUT before blaming the landlord for his greediness or even cursing him as some people do(!) ... does anyone know how much rent do they pay now? if this is about "skyrocketing rent" why they simply don't change a location as many other businesses do? there is many closed pork stores around in this area meeting zoning requirements etc.! it tells me there is more to the story; not my business but before any judgment it would be fair to know both sides' point; especially that Mr. Herbert have got some bad reviews already; I will miss that store regardless the answer; and a word from my aunt: what people don't know is that this store was empty and obsolete until the German man came alone; He brought a life to this store! a lot of products, customers; we were standing in line in front of the store even though there were many of pork stores in the area. Other stores were closing one by one over the time; This store was always full; There was 4-5 man working behind the counter; the German man himself was behind the counter every Saturday; always neat, shaved, always in a shirt, a tie and spotless apron. all of them looked like him; all of them man; There was something special about this store...a class; I was not surprised that since he was gone things started to going in a wrong direction... the store became empty again; once I went there and Mr. Herbert had served me, when he finished he yelled :"next in line" (laughing) there was nobody in the store except me ... I'm talking 10 years back (?)... eh new generation...; they didn't have my favorite roasted beef anymore... That man made a history; that whole legacy of German store is because of him; and because of him it's called "German store"; there is no more places like that anymore; he supposed to have his name curved in the wall of this place, but you telling me that people are trampling over him now? for what? no one would see such a store if not for him; that's sad, that's very sad; that breaks my heart; very unfair to elderly man; I hope he doesn't know it; I wish he is ok ...

Just from viewing the videos I am sensing perhaps the best, ever, pork shop to exist is ending it's reign, at the expense of breaking so manyg hearts. Your products are much loved by patrons who will miss the goodness of the genuinely conscientious staff and excellent meats. Such a shame to see such a beloved establishment closing it's doors.

Google
Family and extended has frequented this wonderful establishment and it's roots of fine foods and old world tastes for over 60 years. Our Loyalty to their service speaks volumes as does their Loyalty to their customers . Said our goodbyes today. Will be sorely missed.

Google
I just seen a YouTube video about these guys having to close their doors because the building owner wants exorbitant rent. Someone who knows them please start a go fund me for them. These are the small businesses we all say we love and want back but yet we still go to Walmart so the Whaltons can buy another yacht. Keep these small family owned shops alive! Even if it’s more a pound you’re getting super high quality compared to cheap highly processed junk from big conglomerates. If I lived in NY I would only get my meat and bread from this guy.

Google
Hello, this is not just a butcher store. I was waiting in line and I see new faces looking for meat...and what surprised me that there are old clients in line helping them. This store is not about business....it's all about family and love. I always say that something good is coming feom bad... and I know you don't need your partner that see monay before people. I wish you that you can open in new place and we will help you. God bless you.

Yelp
Do you remember the Schager Family and the Kaiser Family? Your cliental has changed from 70 years ago and people eat healthier in 2024. Four/Five Stars. Their Grandson, Jason Schager

Yelp
The meats are excellent and the staff is accommodating. They have an excellent selection of goods for a store that's fairly small. There's a lot of top quality imported bottled and canned goods like mustards and spices. I only speak English but the employees and customers will speak in several and that makes it easy for them to order in German, Polish, etc.

Eric H.

Yelp
Saw the news - I'm a staunch supporter of craft excellence. Is there a way to help them relocate?

Paul A.

Yelp
Herbie, I hear you're closing the store due to a massive rent increase, PLEASE RELOCATE TO NORTHPORT, NY, there are some transplanted Gottscheers here who would love for your specialties to come out east. Pumpernickels German Restaurant on 25A needs your help. A German deli, named Edelweiss, of Kings Park, NY (4 miles east of Northport) recently shut down due to the owner passing away, it would be fantastic if Morschers came and filled that spot. It would be a dream come true for me and my Gottscheer wife (from Glendale, NY) who's family were customers of Morscher's for 4 generations.

Robert R.

Yelp
Once again the food and service here is above and beyond. Great quality and value can be had with all that is procured here. I bought all I could carry on my flight back to Florida today, and made my wife smile!

Scott G.

Yelp
Great selection of sausage, the best pork tenderloin that you can buy. Very friendly service.

Peter K.

Yelp
Wow! I think this is my new favorite German store. In the heart of the original German neighborhood of Ridgewood Queens, this place has been the spot for the best meats since 1957 and is still a family business! I have always loved Schaller & Weber in Manhattan and Karl Ehmer with it's many locations around Long Island, but this place is right up there with them. Words can't describe the incredible smell as you walk in, I would pay for this smell bottled up, or an air freshener of this place. Excellent selection of fresh and smoked meats, sausages, groceries and many other German products. Friendly and helpful staff. I love this place and hope it stays here forever!

Elsie W.

Yelp
THE MOZART SAUSAGE!!!!!! SO GOOD. And bratwurst. So many different selections here. You can just point to something that looks good. Pretty decent price too.

Jose D.

Yelp
One of the last pork stores that stills continues old world's tradition and has the best bacon everything in the store is great no disappointment here.

Bridget D.

Yelp
If you love good quality meats at great prices, you'll love this place. Be warned: if you walk in you WILL buy something - the smell of smoked meats is amazing! And they will shrink wrap your purchase for travel :) love it!

Carol B.

Yelp
I am so grateful to have Morscher's Pork Store in my neighborhood. I don't think I'll ever purchase meat from a chain grocery again. The staff at Morscher's couldn't be nicer. When Rusty and I visited for the first time, one of the butchers gave us a tour of the entire establishment and walked us through all of the meats and other goods that they have to offer. Since then, we've been regulars and purchase all of our steaks, pork chops and sausages here. Having a party? Grab some of their "tv stick" sausages. Smoked, not smoked, spicy, non-spicy, they really have something for everyone! Huge pork tenderloins, thick bacon, delicious cheeses. Tons of European canned goods, jellies, cookies. Don't be afraid to ask questions and don't be afraid to leave with a bag full of delicious meats! They take credit cards ($10 minimum).

Yelp
A beautiful shop Got top round and the bacon Just one small issue* *very difficult to communicate, everyone was speaking Polish, so I had to use hand gestures and things got lost in translation. Next time I go, I will be sure to brush up on my Polish vocab

Beth R.

Yelp
Came here for the first time eventhough I live nearby. My friends told me about this place. Bought smoked bacon, awesome taste. Not salty and tasted fresh. The store is clean, staff and owner are super friendly. Will definitely be coming back for my meats from now on.

Yelp
Alienation in a store that supposes food diversity. First off, I am very fond of the delectables that are made available from "european-style" butchers, whatever the region their specialties lie -whether central, eastern, or southeastern I am open to try/eat all (well, most) things. And, in the case of Morscher's, I also respect the diverse heritage in food that they attempt to provide the customer. Why I say "attempt"? Well, lets just say they're unable to cater to the younger/newer customer demographic who are making their way into the Ridgewood neighborhood. Nor do I feel they care. The customer space is too tight (aisle is about 1 person wide) and hence difficult to move from one end of counter to the other to take-in their offerings . The counter is quite high and cluttered, such that it's difficult to engage q&a with the staff, except for a small opening in which to present products and payment. If you're a foodie like me and want to visually inspect an item or ask questions before ordering, this place may not be for you. I had spent an avg $25 per last visits, but would've easily spent more if the storespace & staff was more accommodating. The staff seemed preoccupied with quickly rotating customers due to the very limited space. All my visits felt rushed and hectic as if it was part of some commuter rush-hour shuffle -getting on/off the train. In conclusion, if you're new to the shop... I suggest you visit non-peak times, when there are no more than 2-3 people: weekdays (mornings & mid afternoon). Yeah, pretty tough if you're a working stiff- also, they close at 5pm!! Otherwise, you need to know exactly what you want, speak the staff's language (some are not English speaking), or be a family-friend. If not, you'll feel alienated. BTW, Morschers your fresh brats are so soft&wet, -maybe you should take more care in how you package them before providing to customer. Yeah, a couple of them broke, 3rd time. And dont give me Kabanos that are rock-hard, without a warning. No more.

Mike K.

Yelp
A willing paying customer here. Second time trying to visit your store but CLOSED...again. What the hell is up with your business hours? 5.31pm on the night before Thanksgiving and you're CLOSED! Shutters closed. Yet Yelps states 6pm closing time. I rushed to get here just for this. You need to stay open long enough so that working people returning from WORK who live nearby and want to buy your product can do so. This is not Germany... fühle mich hier voll verarscht. Very frustrated. Cmon guys... stay open just a little bit longer and let your customers know. Thx!

Caleb M.

Yelp
Wow. This is some old world quality stuff. I can't get enough of the Pastrami they make here. I also love the blood variety of headcheese. It's serious stuff -- best when sliced paper thin. Everything is made in house and the staff are dolls!

Michael F.

Yelp
I go to Morschers 3-4 times a month since I moved to the neighborhood 5 years ago. I have never been disappointed in the gorgeous meat or the delicious cooked items. The owner Herbie has introduced me to many Eastern European delicacies and is an expert sausage maker. 5 stars!!

Jai S.

Yelp
This place ruined me. I can't get meat anywhere else now!!;) Love the people here. This place has been here forever and it shows with how they can communicate in several different languages. (As a language nerd, I'm jealous:) You can't go wrong with any sausage. Get the German pastrami and liverwurst.

Ardi E.

Yelp
I like living in a neighborhood with old-timey shops. I have been going to Morscher's since moving to Ridgewood four years ago. They are nice people, and they seem to love what they do. With that being said, I find that when you buy a piece of pork from their store, it has one or two days in the fridge max before it starts getting a little slimey. I feel like maybe they are not moving enough pork, and that the pork in the display is already a few days old. Also, perhaps because they assume people will cook things right away, they wrap the meat very poorly. It's not unusal to come home and find your pork shoulder has slipped out of its wrapping. I like the business, I want the business to stay, and will continue to frequent the business, but I wish they would make a better effort at freshness--maybe display less meat?--and to wrpa things well. Also, one of the older dudes has some serious problems with the credit card machine. I've been overcharged by 1000% before... although they always catch it.

Chris K.

Yelp
Best butcher in the 5 boroughs still doing it old school passed down from generations, they make you feel like a family member when you walk in

Illarion P.

Yelp
A true example where profit is second to the service and love for the finer things in life. Recently, I visited Japan and no one on the planet can come close to their level of service and attention to detail when it come to food and even though Morscher's pork store has nothing to do with Japanese culture it has, in some way, brought me back to a specialty food store in Osaka.

Ragnar E.

Yelp
Can someone tell me if this place is still open? Last couple of times I went to Morscher's it was all locked up (during normal opening hours). Is it temporary or permanent? Thanks.

Garrett P.

Yelp
See, here's the thing: There are authentic spots that can be found throughout NYC; places that have been doing the right thing for a number of years. They do them consistently, and they do them well. Some of these places are well known to many, places like Katz's Deli or Patsy's. Maybe Peter Luger's would come to mind. Then you have the other guys. These are shops that have been around for decades, quietly sitting back and serving their communities for generations, and doing so quietly and without fame. These are like the men who go into battle to help their fellow soldiers: Not always looked up to as heroes, but knowing that they do the right thing is enough to let themselves go to sleep at night with a faint smile upon their lips. This is one of those places. About as unmolested as it gets, and tucked into a nook of Ridgewood where it will hopefully remain unmolested by anything except my hyperbole. A palace of pork. A shrine to swine. I've run out of clever rhymes already, but they just do the right things here, and they do them well. They stock every type of pig product known to man, a number of which have a heavy emphasis on eastern european. The wall in the store is stocked with relishes, spreads, mustards and other types of European items, with a small space in front of the counter stocked with some other various products. You didn't come here for the products, though. Well, I guess you really kind of did. This place is for the pork. I usually go against a butcher that tries to upsell me, I find I'm usually a little let down by what they point me towards. Here, I'm putty in their hands, and they leave me smiling every time. Here's to hoping that this spot stays just the way it is for another 50+ years.

Sebastian M.

Yelp
So much thanks that my friend give me that tip. I opened the door and you straight feel back home in the village butcher in my town in Germany. It smells awesome, everything looks great and fresh and it taste delicious. The Staff is so friendly and funny. The best butcher I found so far here in the US. Will use them to get all my meat for my business and private usage. The leberkaes is a bomb and the sausage is over the top. Thank you guys for doing such a awesome job.

Joe B.

Yelp
Herbie and the crew are 100% mensch. The smoked pork stuffs here are ambrosia. How can a smoked pork chop be so buttery tender and juicy? If you are unfamiliar with a euro style pork store it's simple: follow your eyes and nose. Everything here is looks and smells beautiful. Presentation is immaculate. The staff is courteous and will satisfy your every curiosity regarding their product. Also for the quality of the product the prices are beyond reasonable. This place almost makes me wish I lived in Ridgewood.

Buddy C.

Yelp
Warning! Don't go hungry otherwise you'll be picking things left and right because everything looks and tastes so good! I got pepperoni sticks (dry and regular) for my dad for xmas and it was delicious! I got bacon and kielbasa for myself and the Kielbasa was so so so flavorful. Totally beats the stuff at generic grocery stores. Worth the drive over.

Brandon Z.

Yelp
I'm a vegetarian. But I love Morscher's. Sure, I'm limited to getting a jar of Bauer's mustard or something, but this is a lively remnant of old German Ridgewood at its best. Lively, friendly guys behind the counter, shop full of loyal customers. Everything looks amazing, even if I can't eat any of their core product. They do have a good selection of non-meat specialty items as well, though.

Michelle W.

Yelp
I love this place the bacon is awesome and everything else! the only issue is that half the time they close and hour early or aren't open at all.. Ether the times posted aren't accurate or they just decide to shut shop willy nilly?

E S.

Yelp
Wow! I have been to many German deli's and this is just my favorite!! The variety of items, the friendliness of the owners, etc... A must!!! I wish i could give 6 stars!!

Bob D.

Yelp
This place rules. Best butchers around. The Vienna franks are the best mf hot dogs I've ever had in my life. Great prices. Also great polish packaged goods.

Stephen K.

Yelp
The people are so nice. They make recommendations and are patient with orders. Highest quality meats. Never had a bad meal or bad service. All companies should be this good.

Adam H.

Yelp
Hands down the best place to get your meats. No matter where you live in New York, you must stop in here to get what you need. All their meats are to die for. Their Labercase is the best I ever had. The staff is very friendly and speak multiple languages. I can not say enough good things about Morschers...Awesome Stuff.

Monika A.

Yelp
As a hungarian I was searching for hungarian products but there isn't any significant stuff, however I found polish pickles that completely reminded me of my mom's. I loaded up last time-delicious. It is a very nice butcher shop and the people who work there are super friendly. I found a lot of jarred food that I liked, krowka candy, goose liver pate, stuffed peppers. Everything looks fresh, highly recommend this place.

Scioscia M.

Yelp
What can I say about this place other then it's my favorite spot in all of Ridgewood. What a great selection of old school European products and meats. They cure and smoke so many meats on premise it's ridiculous. I can't say enough good things. And if you don't see it just ask and they are so accommodating. They have save my ass so many times. Including when I've needed to order a whole bone in pork shoulder the day before Christmas and they made it happen. Go here or you're missing out.

Danny M.

Yelp
I don't know where to begin, fresh everyday. You want to know what real meats from pork to beef cold cuts taste like. other then the supermarket and corner stores process meats. Butcher shops are the best way to go... Oh yes

Susan A.

Yelp
It only took me almost 7 years to get here, when I live 2 blocks away! Basically because they close at 6 pm and I don't get home until after that. But I finally went in here 2 times this month. Got my Gill of porky goodness! It's a tiny place to host can only hold about 6 people on line. But it's worth the wait! Staff is polite and knowledgeable. They keep it moving in there! This is a real old school butcher type place with a little deli thrown in. I bought several different parts of the pig to ring in the New Year. Just ate sublimely good slab bacon with my breakfast/brunch. I will definitely return to buy more good meats. Try it, you'll like it.

J F.

Yelp
A piece of Bohemian culture in the heart of Ridgewood. Owner Morscher, Slowenian with history in Austria, sells the best sausages in the area, paired with stories of over 60 years at Catalpa Av. in Ridgewood. Try their Franks, they're the best. If you want to be more adventurous, they have traditional Schwartenmagen too...

Michele K.

Yelp
Morscher's is a fantastic butcher shop in Ridgewood. They have great steakburgers and a wide selection of meats. I recently ordered meat platters for a family reunion and wasn't disappointed. The platters had a various selection of cold cuts and was displayed beautifully. Everyone loved it. I highly recommend Morscher's and support this family business.

Saul G.

Yelp
Recently went on a pork store spree, stopping by Pol-Am in Greenpoint, Muncan in Astoria and Morscher's. The products at all three stores were great, but I give the service award to Morscher's, whose friendly proprietor is truly welcoming. Herbert even put slits in our smoked sausage for the grill! The store is know for its krainerwurst, apparently a Slovenian specialty, but if I had only one choice, I'd plump for the Kaiser's Meat, a rich piece of roasted and smoked pork with a crispy crust. Other choices including a bewildering array of head cheeses and bolognas, bratwurst, weisswursts and liverwursts galore. There are burgers made from porterhouse tails or pork mixtures, as you prefer. Although it is in a smaller space than Schaller and Weber, it is more densely packed, and I think the meat selection here is larger. As other reviewers have observed, it goes beyond the German idiom into Polish kabanosy and Hungarian sausages. I am pretty sure the lady next to me was speaking Magyar and the server was getting it. I just need to find a better way to get here from Westchester - it merits the trip. This is a store that is truly worth your custom and deserving of your support.

Richard K.

Yelp
This is a great authentic butcher one of a very few left in the city. They have any type of meat you want and it's always fresh!! Highly recommended they also have German and eastern European condiments.

Olivia C.

Yelp
Don't think I am bias because I am from Polish decent, but this shop is pretty awesome. Every time my husband and I have come here, the staff has been super friendly and helpful always striking a conversation, making sure you get the right things for what you need. I picked up some polish delicacies for Easter once and it got my immigrant family's stamp of approval!

Patt K.

Yelp
I come here for their store-made fresh sausages, store-made sauerkraut and store-made steak burgers. They have many more wonderful items too, which I will occasionally get and enjoy but if they ONLY had store-made fresh sausages, store-made sauerkraut and store-made steak burgers I'd still come here just for those. Also, did I mention? They are super nice and wonderful people. I wish they were open on Sundays. Morscher's is a treat. A real delight to go to.

Liane T.

Yelp
So worth a stop. Exceptionally clean. Beautiful house made products. Nice, if reserved, counter help. Happy to take the time to share the fine points of each of the delicacies. Very reasonably priced. Cured, dried, smoked and fresh meat and poultry products and imported Russian and Polish foods.i

Star F.

Yelp
I am a fan of Morscher for years, high quality and unique products, the staff are always friendly and passionate. Whenever I travel back to my home country, I bring this made in America products as souvenirs to family and friends. I was there this pass Sat. Herbie give us a tour of the back, I was fascinated with the environment friendly smoke machines and the temperature control room, real wood chip are used, no wonder they taste so good! I've learned that the store is filmed in Vincent Vaughn's movie Delivery Man, the first few minutes of the movie trail has the store scene http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V1lZKDNJ4aQ , it is coming in Thanksgiving, would love to see my favorite store in big screen.

Pat B.

Yelp
It's like stepping back in time, Old time service and old time quality! The best pork products in the tri state area. When we want a great fresh ham with the skin on the only place we can find it is here, so we travel from Yonkers to stock up on our favorites. The staff is knowledgeable and friendly with excellent food, you can't beat it!

Rosie W.

Yelp
The Best Pork Store in Ridgewood! I always leave there with more than I wanted. My parents went here way before I was born, I remember them always giving us a piece of candy when I went with my mom. Then when I had my little guy he would get a piece of candy it brought back memories! I love this place. The food is awesome!

Michael M.

Yelp
Great, authentic, German Butcher's who know their craft. Very professional and always inviting. A real treat and pleasure to see the Old School alive and well in Ridgewood.

Mark R.

Yelp
This is what heaven smells like. If you walk in and the smell doesn't bring a smile to your face then there's something wrong with you. Places like this make me sad, because they remind me of what all butcher's shops used to be like. Or what they should have been like. There are sausages hanging from hooks with smoked ham hocks dangling here and there. They've got good bratwursts, great bacon (sliced or just in a block cut to order) and solid kabanosy. And I can never leave without picking up a couple pairs of landjaeger wrapped up in butchers paper.
