Morton's is a International chain restaurant offering fine cuts of meats at fine prices. I've had the opportunity to dine at Morton's in various cities (Chicago, New York, Toronto, Detroit) and have never had a disappointing experience.
We were at the Somerset Collection and rather than join the rush hour traffic, we decided to try Happy Hour at one of the fine dining restaurants on Big Beaver. We had already tried most of them, and it was down to Morton's and Seasons 52. Both are located in the same plaza and in the end we opted for Morton's. There's plenty of free parking, but the best spots are reserved for the complementary valet parking.
Happy hour in upscale restaurants work out to be regular prices at most other restaurants. It was around 17:00 and the place was getting ready for the dinner crowd. There were only two other tables aside from us in the Bar's dining area. We had asked for both the Bar and Dinner Menus in case we decided to make it more than just snacks.
The Bar Bites menu has a solid choice of tantalizing options. I'm not a fan of French Fries, but they made it sound so tasty, I tried them! From the Bar Bites menu we had the following:
Parmesan Matchstick Fries
Petite Filet Mignon Sandwiches
Crab, Spinach & Artichoke Dip
Mini Crab Cake BLT's
Filet Mignon Trio
There was a little room left for dessert, so we ended up getting some off their regular dessert menu
Raspberry Soufflé
Grand Mariner Soufflé
Parmesan Matchstick Fries ($13 / Happy Hour: $7). A small basket tossed with truffle oil and parmesan. The fries were nice and crispy on the outside and soft and fluffy potatoe on the inside. Lightly salted, and cooked nicey, how can you not be a fan? 4 stars.
Petite Filet Sandwiches ($15 / HH: $8). Requested a medium rare cook and they came exactly that way! There wasn't really much to these sandwiches though, so it was a little disappointing. Served on sesame dinner rolls with some aioli but nothing else. The meat was tender, but overall the dish didn't wow me. 3 stars.
Crab, Spinach & Artichoke Dip ($17 / HH: $9). Served hot with crostini. A nice creamy blend that was not too thick nor too runny. A nice combination of flavor and texture; cheesy, creamy, salty, and the crab adds an element of texture and that seafood flavor you just can't beat. There was a slight acidity to the dish which I couldn't quite finger (lemon juice?), but it complemented the artichokes well. 4 stars.
Mini Crab Cake BLT's ($17 / HH: $9). Three slider sized crab cakes with lettuce and tomato (I guess the B stands for Bread or Bun and not bacon). While tiny, they were quite delicious. New England style with blue crab and minimal filler. I think it could have used a dressing (a remoulade, horseradish cream, chipotle mayo, roasted pepper coulis, curry aioli, or even a mango purée) but it was still pretty good. 3 stars.
Filet Mignon Trio ($16 / HH: $9). Three open faced, naked sliders served with three different sauces. Once again, the cook was perfect to the medium rare we ordered. The sauces were a Blue Cheese Butter, a Sauce au Poivre, and the classic Béarnaise. From subtle to powerful, these sauces were the perfect complement to these nicely charred cuties. 4 stars.
Raspberry and Grand Mariner Soufflé ($12 each). These are individual size soufflés but are perfect for sharing if you just want a taste. Soufflés are somewhat an art, and we were really interested in seeing if they would appear at our table before the air escaped. The first one arrived beautifully, but the 2nd one trailed and deflated by the time it arrived (it didn't matter, I was too slow with the camera and lost the moment anyway... next time...). These were beautifully made, the top was crispy and the inside was so light and fluffy, magnifique! Beautifully airy with a light lingering sweetness to finish. Both were winners, but if I had to choose one, I'd go with the Grand Mariner all day long! 4 stars.
Overall, kind of mixed feelings... Flavors were lacking on the one side, but the execution of the cook, well let's just say the Chef has skills! In the end, I'm still a fan. 4 stars.
