Mo's Place - Review - Los Angeles - The Infatuation

"If you’re watching the game this Sunday, you’re heading to Mo’s Place to do it. The divey sports bar has won the heart of every football fan in the area with cheap drinks, excellent bar food, and flat-screen TV’s in every single direction. There’s also four pool tables and some arcade games if your team sucks and you can’t watch anymore. Just don’t miss their Monday Night Football experience - door prizes, raffles, and absolutely prime people watching. We haven’t been here yet, but want you to know this spot exists." - Team Infatuation

How to Gain Loyal Customers 101 -------------------------------- Arrived at Playa del Rey aftee 9 pm tonight and was longing for a nice Dive Bar Burger and atmosphere to unwind a bit. Serendipity led me to Mo's because, despite that I didn't have enough cash, and that my card didn't work in their ATM, and I was about to leave, Mike (from behind the counter) offered to make up the difference and I ended up enjoying a lovely soup, a terrific Mo's Burger, and a wonderful live performance by a talented duo doing soft rock classics. After enjoying both meal and music, I thanked Mike for the courtesy, asked about the soup and learned it was tortilla soup. I told him I'd definitely be back and guess what? ... Mike sent me off with a container of soup for the road [it's a chilly night]. All for the $10 cash I had. Appreciate you, Mike!

I’ve been here 2x and both times the food has been incredible. The first time I tried the fish and chips and it was delicious, the fries were just OK but the fish was very good. My boyfriend had the steak sandwich and said it was amazing he keeps talking about it. Today I had the tuna melt with onion rings and it was amazing! It was so tasty and I’d definitely come back for that. The service is pretty good as well, waitresses are super nice and attentive. Definitely recommend this place!!

Google
Amazong place by the Calufornia coastline with a sea breeze always blowing through. Fish-N-Chips were amazing, served with fries, tartar sauce, & vinegar. All pub fare is good here. Spend a little time and get to know their staff because they are awesome. Enjoy!

Google
Stopped in twice while in town for the weekend visiting friends who live in the area. First time for drinks but a couple people in our party of eight ordered food which I sampled and it was all good, rib eye steak, pasta, and ceviche. Came back two days later for lunch, fish sandwich, French dip as well as an appetizer. Good beers on tap but beer wasn't as cold as I would have liked it, but I guess that's why you can ask for a chilled glass. Pool tables which thru concert to dining tables in the evening. Great, local, neighborhood bar/restaurant.

Google
Fantastic food. Fabulous waitresses. Service was excellent. Was very busy so may pay to make a reservation if possible. Parking out front and some road side parking in the side streets. All wheelchair accessible.

Mo's Place is a fun casual bar/restaurant. Very casual. Full Bar. Christy is a great bar tender. Mo, the owner, is there a lot, and a very nice guy. The clientele are great too. Met some great customers there as well. It's a very friendly place to have a drink and some good food.

Google
Neet little pub. Only stopped in for a beer and the waitress talked me into the hazy. Do it if you're an IPA connoisseur. Tasty, fresh and not too heavy. The outside patio was a great spot to wait for friends. I will definitely save this spot and come back.

Google
Staff are great. On special was a Reuben sandwich. 4 out of 10 stars. The rye was too fluffy, thick cut and had no bite, the corned beef was chunky not thin sliced, there wasn't enough sauerkraut, and chef forgot the Thousand Island or Russian dressing. (Kate at the bar hooked me up.) Not even sure the cheese was Swiss because it also had no bite. There was no TANG to a famously tangy sandwich. Having lived a long time in NYC, I file this under "Travesty." I love Mo's Place for its local, friendly ambiance and warm staff, not to mention the proximity to Toes Beach two blocks away. I just wish the food were better. Oh, the onion rings were great. Big, beefy and f'real. Still: go and decide for yourself. It's a fun and happy place.

Yelp
4+ an old neighborhood bar that feels like it's been around for a very, very long time. Around the cluster of restaurants and bars in Playa Del Rey, this place offers up your standard type menu in addition to some elevated items such as steaks. The server I had was friendly and helpful. I was in the area, walking the dog and was trying to find something open on the later side that's dog friendly. They had a patio so it looked perfect. I ordered a beer, the soup of the day and some onion rings. I didn't want eat anything big or too much meat so this was perfect at the time. The onion rings came out hot and fresh and the clam chowder was good. The cold beer was very refreshing. All in all solid place to have a meal, especially if you live or are in the area. Pretty good selection of beers and spirits as well. It is a bar after all.

Yelp
Service was good! Ambiance is nice! Love that they had a band the night we went . Brought back so many memories the band played yacht rock! The acoustics. I will go back if they play again! We had went to dinner before we got there so need to back to try food . A must place to try

Yelp
Okay, Mos brunch is absolutely stellar. Shout out to the super kind, funny, and witty as hell woman with the blonde hair who has been there probably as long as I have been alive. Awesome brunch, 3 dollar mimosas, and kitchen that cooks it up better than most breakfast spots. Love to sit on their patio and soak up the sun. If you want to do a little crawl, start at mos venture to harbor room, and finish at the beach. Miss the pool tables, but hey you gotta roll with the changes

Yelp
Another great Tuesday night at MO's with Fernando! Ate and drank well! Had fun dancing too!!

Yelp
Great, lively spot to watch spots, grab beers on tap and have burgers, sandwiches or other bar food (including steak)!

Yelp
Great food at Mo's place! I had the tostada bowl and the jalepeno poppers. We enjoyed sitting on the outdoor patio and staff was very accommodating. Would recommend!

Yelp
This is the local bar where everyone knows your name and it's awesome. You refresh the chicken strips and added fries; both came out piping hot and quick. It's bar food but not boring. Great pours and fun environment, plenty of tvs for any and all sports (multiple playing at once so take your choice). Mondays are a must see experience during MMF & the owner is an absolute delight.

Yelp
The food is a good value Breakfasts are great. Good drinks at reasonable prices. Entertainment most nights . Staff are like family

Yelp
Always fun and comfortable. Food is very good The service is always friendly. It's a go

Yelp
Chrissie R is the BEST!! Food is great. Ambiance is great. Love MO's. Love to see Chrissie.

Dennis J.

Yelp
The food at Mo's has been awful for a while now. Imagine a Sunday brunch without hash browns, eggs Benedict or turkey. The service is poor and the staff doesn't care, it is that bad. I have been a customer for along time and now no more. I have talked to a lot of customers and they feel the same way I do. We all love Mo, but, he is not involved anymore. The restaurant business is tough especially in today's climate, that is why you need to hire good people and TRAIN THEM!! Quit saying sorry and fix it.

Yelp
My friends and I have played trivia night at Mo's every week for the past 8 months or so... We love the food and ambience, and the place has a great vibe (Mo mingles with the patrons). Our server nearly every week is Love, who is AWESOME. She is super friendly, attentive, efficient, remembers our preferences, and is great to interact with. Given the fact that we continue to go every week, they must be doing a lot right at Mo's :)

Kylee S.

Yelp
I'm starting this review before even receiving my food because the service is that fantastic! We are visiting from Bakersfield and never been here so I'll add how the food was at the end. But Chrissie (Christy) was not only fast and polite but fun and enjoyable. The clouds moved shortly after we sat so she offered to move us but we didn't wanna bother so we said no and next thing you know she's rolling over in umbrella to make sure we were shaded, we were alone out front so she even offered to let us control the music out front. After placing our order she went over all available option we may need with our meal ... ranch extra thousand island for the burger...even came back to make sure my Tequila sprite wasn't to strong or needed fixing. By far the best most attentive and fun waitress we have experienced in a very long time! Even her manager was a delight when checking in with us as well. Update: Jalapeño Burger and seasoned fries were delicious and the BEST ONION RINGS EVER! My Girlfriend and split the order and they were kind about to do all the splitting for us. To the owners of this establishment. GOOD JOB.

Yelp
Mo's is in the perfect location and the perfect stop if you are going to the beach and you want to grab a bite first or after the beach; they have their own parking area which makes is a big plus for this busy area. We choose the patio area to enjoy the weather which there was plenty of sitting and I went inside to use the restroom and the inside of Mo's is super spacious it was empty inside but that's because everyone was enjoying the patio area. Our drinks and food came out very quick; the serving size was just right however I could not believe that we were charged for requesting no bun but just lettuce, I wish the waitress would have told me, she did not say anything I would have just said bring it normal and removed the bun myself instead of saving the restaurant money and letting them charge me, that is the reason for the 4 stars. I would go back if I was in the area I would just make sure to get my burger regular and remove my bun myself.

Yelp
This review really breaks my heart. I come into LAX 4x a month from Las Vegas for my job and have always considered this place a home away from home. Since "New Management" took over the last four visits here have been a total disaster. I came in and wanted to order their usually excellent turkey burger, Swiss, Coleslaw and onion rings, I was told that I could have turkey burger only with American cheese because they were out of Swiss cheese, no bun was available so I could have it with lettuce, tomato, and onion, and there were no fries or onion rings available because the owner had not "been to the store". More recently, I called ahead from Vegas because they used to have great fish and chips and I was told that they were out of the fish and they could only serve me the chips i.e. french fries. Last weekend I went in for breakfast with a couple of local friends, and were told that they were out of hashbrowns, had no breakfast sausage, and with the traditional breakfast plate of eggs and bacon, I was offered Polish or Italian sausage. One of my guests wanted the eggs Benedict, which are on the menu and the poor Server had to tell us that the Koch does not know how to poach eggs so no eggs Benedict were available. Boil a pot of water, put some vinegar in it, swirl it, drop the eggs in, make it happen. Three days ago on my way through Playa Del Ray I went in for a margarita and was told they were out of limes and lemons. Someone needs to get their act together and call in the Sysco delivery order before this place goes completely out of business, which would be a crying shame. As a flight attendant, this has been one of my go to Staples for 25 years and I am watching the new owners since the legendary Mo handed it over to a bunch of Woki who seem so disorganized it's unbelievable, and frankly they appear not to give a darn about the food they serve, the customers they're going to lose, or how the servers are expected to make any tips if there is no food available to sell. I mean on a Sunday morning how can you be out of breakfast sausage, limes, and lemons?

Yelp
I got the steak burrito to go and it was absolutely delicious. The burrito size was nice and fat and they give you 2 sauces (salsa and verde) that accompany the burrito. Can't wait to try more of the menu.

Christy O.

Yelp
Sad to see what this place has gone too , growing up eating there and seeing the changes. First the menu , portions and food are just not the same. I used to crave the food, after today I will no longer eat there. Ordered a medium Ribeye steak ( first mistake was ordering a steak at a dive bar ) , received it RARE, cut into it tried to take a bite had a bunch of fat, was absolutely disgusted. A whole steak just wasted. Was asked if I wanted them to cook it more declined because I lost my appetite, would really recommend a thermometer to check temps ! Ended up paying for a steak I didn't eat and getting an upset stomach from the other food . Otherwise everyone is nice and sweet , still a nice place to hang out , would probably pass on the food unless you're drunk.

Yelp
Nasty, we came to eat at 4:10 pm on 4/29, and the heavy hardcore waitress stated that because of kitchen change , hey have only appetizers and drinks. Really? Horrible service, bad management

Cheryl F.

Yelp
The service is OK they do take a while to take your order. We had a really bad experience with the food today. My son had order pancakes, and while he was cutting his pancakes, he found a cockroach. The lady apologized but she did mention that they had just recently fumigate it. I am guessing this has been a problem in the past.

Alex W.

Yelp
The food is just so-so, and it gets LOUD inside, but there's a fun trivia/pub quiz on Wednesdays. Service was very good.

Jackie K.

Yelp
This is an awesome sports bar near the beach. We are always here on Sundays for breakfast and football, along with Wednesdays for trivia. Love is almost always our server and is the best. She always takes great care of her tables and is on top of making sure you have everything you need.

Mia H.

Yelp
We had a big group and Niki was the best server ever!! Along with everyone who worked at Mo's, Josh was amazing as well. Great spot and will definitely be back soon!

Yelp
A bar is a bar is a bar. Shame the pool table is gone, but alas, it's still a sports bar. Decent food - wouldn't knock it, nor up-sale it, but the breakfast burrito was tasty and I'd have it again, especially at $10 a pop! Mo's loses a star for me because the pico de gallo and guacamole were a bit watery - almost like an avocado sauce instead of guacamole. Had I brought my dog, as they are dog friendly, that probably would have bumped it up to a 5! I can overlook some watered down sides had I brought my pupper. But that's on me. See you soon Mo's! Thank you to the kind and efficient wait staff.

Negar E.

Yelp
I had an awful experience .the burgers weren't fresh and buns were stale.the restaurant was full of smoke, which left my clothes greasy and gross .To top it off ,they changed us extra for cheese on the burgers . I won't be coming back.

Yelp
We tried Mo's for the first time just recently after driving through the area. From the outside it looks like a dive bar, and I believe at one time it might have been from judging by the pool table references in their signage, but now it's more of a tavern/restaurant. They have an outdoor patio that was fairly packed when we came on a Saturday afternoon. They don't have much of a bar so the place is just a bunch of open seating inside. In terms of the food, they have the standard bar food. We were caught in the middle of the brunch/lunch transition so decided to go with lunch. The burger was decent. Service was a little slow from the kitchen but we've loved our bartender who had some great conversation. Overall we would be back, but I think this place might have been better back in its day when it was a dive bar.
google avatar

Mary M.

Yelp
We hadn't been here in four years because we moved to Florida, but it was nice to revisit this place again. It's been nicely updated and it's much cleaner than I remember. Food is still great, the people who work there are really accommodating. My only complaint is that they need to resurface that parking lot. The speed bumps are almost impossible to see, and the parking lot is very uneven. I almost tripped twice. Somebody should repaint those speed bumps at the very least before there is a real accident there. How much does a can of paint cost? Not much compared to a trip and fall accident and a potential lawsuit.
google avatar

Sarah B.

Yelp
Mo's is awesome! Came here on a weeknight afternoon to meet with an old friend. They have a full parking lot with free parking, which is super uncommon over here. The interior is clean and modern, great vibes, lots of TVs showing sports, and good music in the background. Christienne, the bartender totally made our day, she is super funny, super attentive, and really nice. I got the tuna melt and my friend got the fried fish sandwich and the food was delicious! $25 bottles of wine and sparkling wine make this place even more awesome. Highly recommend!

Michael M.

Yelp
We stopped at 4:16 p.m. for dinner. Menus were outside. I had to walk inside twice asking for a server. Finally, a ser er comes out and tells us that only appetizers are being served. What a disappointment.

Yelp
Stopped at Mo's Place for lunch. I ordered the patty melt and an IPA beer that the knowledge waitress suggested. The sandwich was cooked to perfection at medium rare and the onion rings were great. The beer recommendation was tasty. Dining on the covered patio parking lot with plenty of heaters made this a nice experience on a cool winter day.
google avatar

Yelp
Cheap drinks. Bar food was average. Not A place for fine dining. However if you want reasonable price drinks & soak it up with bar food, good laughs & people. I will return.

Yelp
This place used to be a neighborhood staple. Came tonight, waitress was a little rude right off the bat but they were busy so okay. She mentioned kitchen is backed up and again, okay. An hour and 20 min later our food comes. I had come specifically for the steak, ordered it a la cart. Steak comes out totally burned but by this point I'm so hungry that I just have to eat it. Mention it to the waitress and she says "yeah well it's charbroiled." As if this is the first steak I've ever eaten. It's so clear they haven't cleaned their grill in a week. Paid $50 for some meat and feel like I ate a bag of charcoal. Friend ordered fish and chips and didn't even eat the fish it was so bad. This place used to have amazing food. And to top it all off a big fight broke between some drunk patrons and no only did we not get a manager coming to apologize or even acknowledge, it just delayed our check another 20 min. Wont be going back. Really sad.

Joey R.

Yelp
This Calamari is great actually! Didn't really order anything else, was worried from the spot, but this is better than a lot of other places.

Yelp
Now this was a good burger! I was hanging out with my brother in law and we wanted to get a drink and some food. I go walking in playa del rey a lot and Mo's was not super busy that day. We sat down and was greeted immediately by the bartender who was very pleasant and helpful. To make ir short and sweet the service was great, the drinks were fire and the burgers we ordered were works of art. Definitely don't pass this up of you're in the area

Rob S.

Yelp
Mo's is a great location if you are going to the beach. its a cool spot in playa to watch sports and have burgers

Bonnie K.

Yelp
Our recent dinner at Mo's was, unfortunately, a big disappointment. We have always loved the food, but this time it was very poor: the chicken alfredo had no flavor, and the chicken breast in the chicken sandwich was dry, flavorless and was so tough that I could not even cut it....the salmon also tasted a little fishy and seemed dry and overcooked. We were happy that the wine and cocktail prices are still very fair and quite low, but we were taken aback with some of the increases in the food prices, eg, until recently, pork chops were about $22/$23, and they are now $31.95. We fully understand the need for restaurants to raise food prices to cover their own increasing costs, but 40%+ seemed pretty steep. We will try Mo's again in hopes that the food quality will return to what it had been for so long.
google avatar

Richie D.

Yelp
Walked by Mo's and it's a friendly and cool dive bar where locals and visitors join in conversations, motorcycle clubs meet up, and where to enjoy a Modelo and a shot of Jameson! Onion rings were okay, and when they ask you what sauces you want, they will charge you $1 for ranch, which a heads up would of been nice before ordering it. Ranch sauce was very good and not worth $1. Very friendly staff tho!
google avatar

Eric C.

Yelp
Horrible food but ok service. Everything is overpriced with zero flavor. I feel like people end up coming here because it sorta looks like a restaurant from the outside but as soon as you go in its a dive bar. The whole area is difficult to find d anything decent so you kinda just end up here if not another dive bar. Hard pass.
google avatar

Grace T.

Yelp
Great service and great food. I ordered split pea Soup and fish and fries and I left the place feeling very full and satisfied. Ambience great and the price was really good for the large portion of food they served me. I definitely recommend!
google avatar

Rj F.

Yelp
Atmosphere: Humble pub with super nice and funny workers. Cool location by the beach with lots of outdoor area, and a pool table. Great selection of IPA/ craft beers. Food: Their pub food- the fish n chips are the best in playa 8/10 with decent steak fries. The Greek salad was Ok 6/10.

Arthit C.

Yelp
I came here from a suggestion on Reddit. So, I must try all these places in Playa del Rey. I would say this is disappointing, the food was alright, but the waitress was a little on the rude side. Added to that was the serving time that took too long almost 45 minutes for just a pretty standard breakfast order. Think of that again the cleanliness of this place is also questionable.
google avatar

Bruce T.

Yelp
Had a great dinner at Mo's place in Playa Del Rey. The ribeye was soooo good, great flavor and perfectly cooked. Baked potato was also awesome, not the barely warm out of the microwave type. Great service, Jan was super friendly, and Alberto, the owner, came out and chatted with us. Atmosphere was lively with lots of loyal locals, and 14 tv screens to watch whatever sports suits you with a great selection of ice cold brews, can't ask for more.... will definitely be back!

Sandra R.

Yelp
Food was below average, service was poor (we were there at the bar for 15 minutes without anyone taking our order). The place is not clean. The bartender made a drink and put a straw in it to taste it and put the same straw back in and tasted again!!!! So unsanitary. Kitchen is behind the bar and there is only one little sink. Never saw any employee wash their hands.
google avatar

Jynelle K.

Yelp
Mo's is interesting. The staff and service are excellent, especially Olivia!!! We came to this place because the food seemed good and we saw pool tables advertised. They haven't had any for a year and aren't getting new ones which was a disappointment. The food we ordered was the NY steak sandwich, beer battered fish and chips, and a patty melt. With 4 beers and 2 margaritas all of this was $111 before tip which is amazing. The fish in the fish and chips was a big block of fish that looked sort of like an eggroll and definitely not the long fish strips as normal. The bathroom is really nice. Overall I'd give it a 3.5 but I'll round up since Olivia was super accommodating.
google avatar

Michael T.

Yelp
As good as dive bars get. The food is very solid for bar fare, with nachos exactly as sloppy and popcorn shrimp exactly as crispy as your drunk self dreams of. The drinks are also very reasonably priced, and as they say they're the "land of no short pours." My drink was exceptionally strong (to the point that I had to get more mixer added) and only $7. It's definitely the type of place you go to have a lot of fun for not a lot of money. But the real winner here that brings it to 5 stars was the service -- I wish I'd gotten our waitress' name but she was HILARIOUS, super fun to talk to, and very accommodating and quick. I've never had service that good in a bar and that's what will ultimately bring me back. One important note: we were told they don't accept out of state IDs. Wish we'd have known before that because my friend had one, but it wasn't a big deal.

Yelp
One of our fav. Local watering holes. Whether you're in the mood to relax outside to watch the sunset, or catch a few sporting games, this is your place. Love their burgers, chicken Caesar pita sandwich, wings, CHICKEN FINGERS & quesadillas.
google avatar

Ingrid W.

Yelp
Mo's has been and will always be my fav...NY Steak with Eggs Benedict and a lite-skin Mimosa will remain my regular until the end of time...

Yelp
MO's was such a pleasant surprise! We were in town for a college water polo tournament at LMU and needed a stop between games. We wanted to watch some college ball on a Saturday late morning, so we saw they were fairly close by. When you step in, you think, what in the world? And then Christien (like Christy-Ann) brings you into the warmth that is MO's. The food was really great, beer was really cold and she was really wonderful. We had a few hours to kill and they were well spent there for sure :)

Yelp
TL:DR Bad food, meh service, fight broke out close to our table Where to begin? Party of 3, we were seated in their outdoor tent area right away - around 7:30 on a Fri. Waitress said they were busy and food would take a while. No problem. Took over an hour to receive food which was quite a bit longer than expected even with the warning. Would have been nice to have been offered bread or chips or something to tide us over in the meantime. Waitress disappeared for a long time so it took 45 minutes to get a refill. But again, she did warn us they were busy. I ordered fish n' chips, substituted fries and coleslaw for baked potato. About an hour after ordering was told they ran out of baked potatoes. But I did end up getting the last potato. It was good. The two pieces of fish were sizeable, lots of breading. The fish was soggy and flavorless. I don't know how to explain it. I took a bite of each piece and didn't eat any more. No one asked whether I liked the dish and no comments even as the plate with the fish still on it was taken away. I probably would have commented myself but at that point I was freezing and ready to go. Then a loud argument broke out behind me and just as fists seemed about to fly some people interceded. One of the men was asked to leave. A small dog ran toward us during the hubbub. One of the men was yelling about his dog and I told him he was by us. Got his dog and left. I saw a waitress tell another person (bouncer?) to make sure that he doesn't come back. He came back about 5 minutes later but stayed at the periphery. I was surprised none of the waitstaff nor a manager came over to our table to acknowledge the fight. Is this normal? Got the check. If you have Apple pay you can scan and pay using your phone. It didn't work for me due to one of my settings. Didn't feel like changing the setting so just left cash. Came home hungry and disappointed.
