Mother Review - Battersea - London - The Infatuation

"With railway arches available to new businesses in the aftermath of Battersea Power Station’s manic redevelopment coupled with the influx of young professionals with beards buying up new properties nearby, where better for the Italian owners of Copenhagen-based Mother Pizza to open their second outpost? Because if you can’t sell a Danish pizza to a young professional in a railway arch, you may as well return your Supreme hoodies and burn your skateboard in a pizza oven. Mother’s setting is definitely the main draw. There are candlelit wooden tables throughout, and an open kitchen, and while exposed brick wall is something we’re sick of talking about, it contributes to a great feel. Two pizza ovens and an open kitchen will keep you warm enough from the draft from the front, which is usually kept open. There’s a projection of a flame on the back wall that we can’t quite work out, but overall, this is a space you’ll like hanging out in. As for the food? Mother Pizza has been raved about in Copenhagen. But we didn’t want to take their word for it, because most of their bread is flat and topped with herring. London, on the other hand, has some brilliant pizza places nowadays, from established homegrown chains like Pizza Pilgrims, Homeslice, and Franco Manca to trendy Italian imports like Da Michele and Quartieri. Ultimately, Mother’s pizza falls just short of what you’ll find at the aforementioned places. Although their dough is supposedly made with purified seawater, this does very little to set it apart from the big hitters. We were skeptical as to how seawater could markedly improve any meal, and this has done nothing to change our minds. That said, we’re talking very high pizza standards, and Mother’s offerings are still quite good. It’s a thicker Neapolitan crust that works particularly well with some of the rich topping combinations they have here, like the Salamina pizza which comes with punchy salami and mascarpone. There are some very enjoyable starters too - the fried mozzarella balls are a great way to get started and the burrata is also wonderful. Mother is a great place to mix it up for a casual date or to hit before a night out. And with a great drinks menu, plenty of big tables and generally a lively, buzzy atmosphere, it’ll suit a big celebratory meal just as well. After all, no one’s going to be too upset about eating pizza in a railway arch. Food Rundown Mozzarelline In Carrozza These slightly out of the ordinary fried cheese balls pack an oily filthy punch. If you’re not sharing mains, this might be a little heavy for a starter. Having said that, you should definitely get this regardless. Burrata Just a quality burrata and something to set you up nicely for the carb fest to come. It’s fresh, smooth, and very creamy. Bufala Pizza A simple pizza, made with buffalo mozzarella. You won’t go wrong here. Salamina Pizza Topped with salame and mascarpone, this pizza is creamy, rich and satisfying. Mother is big on interesting topping combos, and this is a good example. Marinara Pizza The tomato sauce isn’t quite tasty live on its own without cheese at Mother. Stick to the pizzas with more toppings." - Sam Collins

Delicious food, friendly and quick service. A good place of you're in a rush to eat something. It's found in the meatpacking district, so it can be very full at peak times in the evening on weekends.

"Probably" the worst pizza in Copenhagen! We had ordered starters ("for sharing") and 4 different pizzas. Nothing good to say about any of those we got. How can people drive business like that?!! It was waste of good appetite, good mood, time, and a lot of money. Never again!!

I recently visited Mother in Kødbyen, and overall, it was an excellent experience. The standout for me was definitely their cheese pizza, which was rich, creamy, and full of flavor without being overwhelming – a perfect balance that really showcased the quality of their ingredients. Their Margherita was also very good: simple, fresh, and exactly what you’d expect from a classic pizza done well. The pepperoni pizza, while decent, felt a little underwhelming in comparison. It wasn’t bad by any means, but it lacked the same punch and excitement that the other pizzas delivered. That being said, what truly elevated all of the pizzas was their incredible dough. It had the perfect texture – airy on the inside, with a beautifully charred crust that gave it that authentic wood-fired character. It’s the kind of dough you can happily eat on its own. It is on the pricier side, which means you naturally expect a high level of quality – and for the most part, Mother delivers on that. Combined with its lively, casual setting in Kødbyen, it’s a great spot for anyone who appreciates well-made, Italian-style pizzas with an unforgettable crust. ————————— I visited Mother in Kødbyen with my girlfriend, and while the pizza itself was quite tasty, the overall experience left a lot to be desired. At 160 DKK per pizza, you expect not only good food but also good service – and unfortunately, the service was disappointing from start to finish. Despite the restaurant being almost empty, we waited an unnecessarily long time before getting a table. Once seated, no waiter came over to take our order until we actively flagged someone down. When we finally did get service, the waiter seemed neither particularly friendly nor interested, which set a rather unwelcoming tone. The pizzas were undeniably good – fresh, flavorful, and with a nice charred crust – but the lack of attentiveness and warmth from the staff made it hard to truly enjoy the visit. Sadly, even with great pizza, it wasn’t the kind of dining experience I’d look forward to repeating.

Amazing food! Like many of the other reviews mentioned, the service was completely terrible. Items ordered and never received. Would have definitely ordered another beer had the server ever checked in. Could not flag down for the check so eventually had to pay at door. Not being a picky American, I was with a Dane who said even for Copenhagen, the service was terrible.

Food was great as usual.. Atmosphere would have scored higher if the waitress wasn’t such a Debbie downer ruining the experience with her bad attitude. Honestly one of the worst service experiences in Copenhagen. Unfortunately we didn’t get her name because I think it would be valuable to the owner to know who in their company is ruining the experience for the guests.

Started out great - staff was lovely, we went for an offer deal that began with starters, which were delicious so we had our hopes high. After waiting quite some time the pizzas that arrived were all disappointing. We understand the concept and Neapolitan pizzas - but this was not it. 3 out of 3 pizzas were undercooked, runny as water, so all the ingredients slid off and proper burnt so that it overpowered the whole taste :/

We shared a margarita pizza and a bruschetta. Both of them were super tasty, fresh and made with quality ingredients. However the star of the show was the nutella calzone. This was amazing and totally worth the sugar coma. They should however step up on their cleaning game, since the condition of the toilets was unacceptable.

We visited Mother Copenhagen and, while the pizza had potential, the overall experience was quite disappointing — mainly due to the service. It took 15 minutes before anyone approached us, even though the restaurant was nearly empty. We were seated in a corner table, which felt like an afterthought. The windows had visible mold, the wine glasses were dirty, and one of the shared plates still had food residue on it. Service throughout was inattentive — we couldn’t get a waiter’s attention to order more drinks. The wine we received was clearly a refill; the seal had already been broken, and it was obvious the bottle had been reused. 25kr pr person for water with refill, but no waiter to come and fill it up. As for the pizza: while the flavor was fine, the dough was far too soft and undercooked — it needed a little more time in the oven, On top of that, the toppings were sparse and didn’t quite justify the price. When it came time for dessert, one guest asked for the vanilla which the waiter said was fine — yet we were still charged for the full version with coffee. If the coffee couldn’t be removed, he could’ve at least offered it to someone else at the table. In short: average Italian pizza with subpar service. Not the kind of place you rush back to — unless it’s to remind yourself where not to go.
