Downtown’s Ritzy Rooftop Lounge Serves Champagne and Seafood For Days - Eater LA

"There’s a sweet new rooftop lounge in Downtown LA to know about, and it’s loaded with raw bar dishes and plenty of champagne to enjoy. Named Mother of Pearl, this standalone open-air lounge from chef Joshua Gil and the Houston Brothers is yet another addition to Level 8 at the Moxy/AC Hotel in Downtown, and comes just off the heels of yesterday’s opening intel on Maison Kasai, Gil’s other project on the same floor. Drinks are designed by Devon Espinosa, champagnes are selected by wine director Eric Railsback, and the ambitious seafood menu includes dips, seafood towers, oysters, and other luxurious touches." - Matthew Kang

Google
Absolute hidden gem at the moment, get a spot before this place blows up. The rooftop is at exactly the right story that you get an amazing sunset but you’re not too high that its too windy or cold. The food was a steal considering what you’re eating (tin of caviar in the middle nbd). We split the Ocean’s Treasures thinking that we’d be hungry at the end, but adding the Mariner’s Toast made the whole thing a meal. Service was superb, super helpful and kind throughout the night.

The view, ambiance and sunset 🤌🏼 the staff was very friendly. Not a fan of having my waitress be the host and bus boy which diminishes quality of service. The food is sub par and not much of an oyster bar with one type of oyster on menu. The squid ink spaghetti was lacking as it was more Alfredo than squid ink and the lobster meat balls tasted like some heated frozen store bought ready to eat.

Had a fantastic experience here! You must try mom's spaghetti which includes lobster meatballs and squid ink pasta. The mariners bread is a must as well. Iga our server was fantastic and had recommended us all the best items on the menu. And our bartender Nicholas was fantastic as well. Even made us an off-menu eastside which was as good as they come. Not to mention you get to enjoy all of this while taking in the stellar rooftop views. Great place for small group or a date as its not as loud as the rest of Level 8.

An amazing rooftop spot with a breathtaking view of Los Angeles! Iga, our server, was amazing — she recommended several delicious dishes, and each one was incredible. The oysters with caviar were especially fresh and unbelievably tasty. The atmosphere was perfect for a night out, with great food, excellent service, and a view that made it unforgettable. Highly recommend for anyone looking to enjoy a memorable dining experience in LA!

The Squid Ink Pasta is excellent, as well as the Aguachile! Service was great despite us arriving just before closing! Thank you Iga!, Kyoto Summer drink from bartender Nick was fantastic! Overall lovely joint to have a conversation and vibe.

Yelp
I've been wanting to check out Moxy's Level 8, so I made a reservation via OpenTable for a same-day reservation. Upon arrival, the system did not register and show my reservation on the first floor, but the lady still sent us upstairs. The restaurant is an outdoor dining area facing the convention center, which is very scenic for watching the sunset. We ordered oysters and drinks. + Kyoto Summer 2/5: I did not like the drink at all. It had a very strong herbal flavor that I wasn't a fan of. It also wasn't as carbonated and refreshing as the server recommended. + High Tide 3/5: I thought the drink was okay. The huge oyster shell with all the popping boba sitting in there was kinda interesting but not practical. It's pretty but extra. + Oysters 4/5: Fresh! I'm glad I got to try Mother of Pearl but I don't think I'll be back nor would I really recommend this place.

Yelp
Please excuse my blurry images. I went to a private party for Mother of Pearl (i think it was like a soft opening) last weekend and omg...the fish slider was the star of the night. Wow, despite being a slider sample size, I cannot wait until the restaurant opens so i can get the full sized version (it may already be open by now). The amount of batter was so perfect and not overpowering, the seasoning of the fish was impressive and compliments the fishiness and the sandwich construction itself was good. I'm not sure if they will make the sliders a larger sized fish sandwich but that would be really great if so because the fish is a little thinner side in the sliders I had. Can't wait to go for more. There was also a lobster squid ink pasta...very great recipe and blend of flavors.i believe it's called Moms spaghetti. Honestly very good bites/menu tasting. The view is also great. It's an outdoor restaurant so the ambiance hits with DTLA skyscraper views.

Yelp
Food was delicious. It's not something I'm used to eating. Service was fast. I got a reservation around 830. I came in at 8:15 and got seated immediately. I expected to wait for the food longer than usual but it was fast. I had a cocktail and ordered the blue fish tube plate. Ambience was very chill and the waiter was nice to us.

Yelp
I made a dinner reservation for Thursday 10/31 at 8:30 pm, and when we arrived they told us the kitchen was closed. I would assume if an establishment's kitchen is going to be closed, all parties would be informed of this before arriving so not to have dinner guests arrive to a restaurant with a non functioning kitchen. Truly a waste of our time, very disappointed.

Yelp
Let's start with the beautiful ambience and breathtaking rooftop view. There is definitely nothing like this downtown. You would think you were in another city. The staff were so friendly and kind. The service was excellent. The food was absolutely delicious. I loved their oysters and their spicy salad, their fish sliders and their spaghetti and meatballs. I will definitely go back for a nice glass of white wine and enjoy the view and food with a friend again.

Yelp
Everything was so amazing!! Mouthwatering pasta, apps and caviar heaven. The service is absolutely perfect, the waiters were so kind and happy to be there. The ambiance is insane as well; what can be better than delicious food on a rooftop overlooking the whole city? I will be back a ton!

Yelp
Had the loveliest experience at this spot! Incredible seafood, amazing service and the squid ink pasta with lobster meatballs is the star of the show! Will absolutely be back

Yelp
This place is great - we will be back. The food was so well executed, we want to try other stuff. Had the tuna tar tar, sand dab sliders and the ceviche, which I would rate 9.5, 9 and 9.5 respectively. They're small places so you need to load up but that just means you get to try more dishes. The 100% outdoor setting and the view of LA Live across the street (Figueroa) are cool too. For bev's, we had espresso martini, tequila/OJ and a mezcal-menu drink which were all great (even if they were each $21?!). Finally, our server and overall service was super all around.

Yelp
yum from the oysters to the lobster meatballs -- unreal. The golden shrimp was by far my favorite !!

Yelp
Located on Level 8 at the Moxy hotel. It has a great outdoor dining area overlooking the convention center and crypto arena. The west facing location affords great sunset views. The "from the kitchen" menu items are smaller in portion, more like appetizer sizes. Recommend the Moms Spaghetti, as it comes with lobster meatballs in black ink spaghetti doused in cream sauce. The spicy bluefin tuna is another solid item. Was not impressed with the Sand Dab Sliders, it had very little fish. The Fritto Misto was also disappointing with very little abalone and squid. Overall the service and ambiance was excellent.

Yelp
Had such an amazing time here! Nick did a great job suggesting wines and making us feel welcome. Walter was also wonderful and really made our experience memorable!

Yelp
The food and ambiance here was absolutely divine! I got the squid ink and lobster meatball pasta and it was incredible. 10/10.

Yelp
Walter and Nicolas were wonderful! View was great and the bar was very welcoming and warm! Nicolas was very knowledgeable and kind. Ask for Nick at the bar he tells great jokes!

Yelp
Love, love, love this place. The food and drinks were great. Service was so friendly and attentive, made you feel like you're old friends. The restaurant itself self is amazing looking, you have to see it in person, very cute.

Yelp
Terrible management, no communication with booking and front of house. Good luck trying to speak with an actual human being.

Taylor R.

Yelp
top to bottom this spot is a hit. staff, servers, managers treated us like VIP! we ordered damn near the whole menu & was not one complaint. The lobster meatballs, i will be thinking about for the next week. The sliders were perfect. This meal is perfect to leave feeling like you are plenty satisfied & enough room for the baked Alaska for dessert i will be back!!!

Yelp
They charged my card $250 for not showing up to a reservation I desperately tried to cancel the day before. This review is solely for their lack of humanity, so apologies to the actual staff this does not reflect on them, just the people behind the curtain. I booked a reservation at about 6pm for the following night at 7:30 and then an hour later realized this wouldnt work for various reasons. I called, and it was an endless pre recorded menu that took me through a loop. You press 8 to reach the restaurant, it rings once and no one answers and it takes you right back to the original menu. I tried calling multiple times. By the time I went to cancel my reservation online, it wouldnt let me because it was within the 24 hour mark. Mind you, when you put your card down it says "you MAY be charged a no-show fee of $250" . I am in the service industry and a "no-show" is when someone does not call or communicate at all and does not show up. The word "may" also is much different than "will" , it implies that there are circumstances that this charge will not occur. I emailed the restaurant and sent a dm only to get a copy paste response saying we hope to see you next time. I emailed again to let them know what had happened and to refund my money, and no response. I DM'd them as well to let them know and was left on "seen". In a day and age when inflation is at an all time high and you put your card down to hold a space out of trust that if anything changes you will be able to reach a human being, this is absolutely inhumane and completely disgusting. Have some decency and get someone to answer your phones for these types of situations. I will not be coming back to this corporate soulless restaurant and to be quite frank, if you care about middle class working folks who can't afford to be robbed of their hard earned money, neither should you.
