"There’s an effortless cool to Mother’s menu: chunks of baby beets piled with whipped avocado on a tostada; broccolini adobo; chile verde starring starchy white beans and hominy rather than the standard pork. The all-vegetarian restaurant is enjoying its second incarnation; chef Michael Thiemann reopened at a different location last summer, and it hasn’t taken long for the restaurant to resume its special place in diners’ hearts. The fun approach and vibrant fare make Mother a reliable option for a midweek dinner, solo or otherwise. For a more elevated experience, check out the 10-course tasting menu." - Tamerra Griffin

It was as solid vegetarian stop. The Rosemary Fries w/ the smoked vegan mayo were excellent. The Nut Burger was good, I've never had one before, but I probably prefer the more traditional alternatives. My Kiddo got the Farro salad and liked it. Overall it was a good experience.

Alright, I will preface this by saying I’m extremely hard to impress with food. I love to cook and very, very rarely eat out. And when I do, I’m almost always disappointed or at best unimpressed. My friends and I were spending the weekend in Sacramento, and I had looked up healthy restaurants. This one caught my eye, so we tried it out on Saturday night. Right away when we walked in, I loved the atmosphere. It was colorful but cozy at the same time. We were greeted and sat right away at a long, high-top table. There were cute little flower vases on every table and colorful glasses for water. We split the mustard brussels sprouts and baked veggie focaccia as appetizers. They brought out three plates and even cut the bread in three slices for us— small touches that made us feel cared for! For our meals, we got the curry, lasagna, and bitter caesar. We all tried bites of each other’s, and let me tell you— everything was absolutely INCREDIBLE. This was by far some of the best food I’ve ever had in my entire life. It almost brought actual tears to my eyes. My friends agreed, and we couldn’t shut up about it during the whole meal. Funnily enough, at the end we learned from the server that the chef has a Michelin nod, and my friends and I had been saying it tasted like Michelin star food. I am already dreaming of coming back to town so I can eat here again. Oh, it was also super reasonably priced, though I would have gladly paid much more.

Came here for my birthday during a chefs 10. Everything was incredible! The chef Mike came out and explained everything and really made us feel like we were in there alone having a super special evening to ourselves. The server Raef was so kind and attentive, and truly went above and beyond.

Kale salad was too saucy. Brussel sprouts has a lot of mustard in it and are smashed. Lasagna was so so and expensive. Was excited to try this place out but what a letdown.

Very delicious, soul-food inspired dishes—all vegetarian. Great place to go for a special night to sample lots of offerings. The fried green tomatoes and corn with tarragon was a highlight.

Took my mom her for Mother’s Day, does not get more “Mother” than that. It was her request too, because we’ve loved Mother for years and when it closed it was a big loss for us and the farm to fork community in Sacramento. When she heard it had reopened she had been asking to return and I am SO glad we finally went. Already plotting to come back. As usual, elevated vegetables. Nothing forced into a meat shape or flavor, just highlighting the natural flavor and bounty of the ingredients. Honestly, the broccoli adobo was my favorite menu item. Simple but so complex in flavor and texture. An amazing dish. Could lick the plate. The farro was good, but didn’t really do it for me flavor-wise. Was missing come acidity. Texture and freshness was on-point in truly every dish we had. The homemade ravioli made with fava beans was insane! So delicious and balanced. Highly recommend that dish too. And the hummus? I was not expecting to love it so much but everything combined from the sweet apricot to the tangy hummus and fresh salad was insanely good, we were fighting over who got to finish it. I regret not taking a picture but the golden beet tostada was very memorable too. It reminded me flavor and texture wise like a ceviche. Ok I could go on and on. Can’t wait to come back and try more. A great place to share a bunch of dishes with friends and try as much as you can because you won’t be disappointed! Great new location and the service was amazing just like the original location. So glad you’re back!

Substantial vegetarian fare that is sophisticated in the chef’s innovative combination of vegetables and herbs. We share the green curry and the wedding lasagna. The green curry was my favorite. The roasted garlic caught my attention, the curry added depth, while the different vegetables surprised me with each taste. The lasagna is light and creamy, a solid entree which seems vanilla compared to the flavorful curry. We also enjoyed the Jamichael drink made with hibiscus and other juices. The high top tables were comfortable after sitting all day, and there are standard tables as well. This restaurant offers a fresh perspective on meatless meals!

I used to love the old Mother, but this was my first visit to the reopened site. I was early, nobody else was there, though they were doing a lot of takeout. I ordered the beets, and strawberries, very nice, and the squash latkes. Now, I've been eating latkes my whole life. I know what they're supposed to be and was looking forward to a,squash version. Imagine my surprise when the dish came out with 2 inch high wedges of what looked like pureed (?) squash cake! The top was browned dark like from the oven. While the sauce was flavorful and the sauteed veggies very nice, the cake was rather flavorless. I would not ever tell a chef how to prepare their dishes, but I suggest, at least re-naming this one. I may try Mother again, but this time was very disappointing.
