The 15 Best Decatur Restaurants - Atlanta - The Infatuation

"The line at the always-busy Mother’s Best Chicken moves quickly, so you’ll have your big bucket of herby, perfectly crispy fried chicken in short order. You can get an eight-piece bucket with two sides, like tangy collard green coleslaw and hearty rice and beans, for $32, making it an easy option for a family meal. Or bring a few friends to the diner-like space and turn things into a quick dinner and drinks outing since there are plenty of beers on tap and a thick, boozy frozen Irish coffee that comes with a crinkly-cut fry." - juli horsford, jacinta howard, nina reeder

The 14 Best Fried Chicken Spots In Atlanta - Atlanta - The Infatuation

"Getting a bucket of fried chicken in Atlanta isn’t as easy as it should be, but Mother’s Best Chicken in Decatur delivers when you need a cool place to feed a small crew. Buckets range from half- to two whole birds and come with two or three sides, like savory LA-style red beans and rice and tangy collard green coleslaw. The thin, crunchy, herby chicken breading is outstanding. The food comes out fast. And the nostalgic diner vibes are fun. Just know the place gets packed, so come for a late lunch or early dinner unless you want to perfect your speed-eating technique while making awkward eye contact with the people hovering near your table." - jacinta howard

This veteran friendly establishment is one to try! The food is good (seasoned and crispy) and so was the service. The atmosphere here is unique and funky. Your eyes will be entertained. Please try their “whirled famous” potatoes and gravy! I absolutely loved the taste and smooth texture of the potatoes!

Google
I got to the restaurant nearly when they just opened so didn't have much of a wait. The place is small, cozy, and interestingly decorated. The staff was very friendly and good salesman when it comes to their food. The food wasn't nasty, but it wasn't some of the best chicken I have had either. Chicken was hot but definitely could have a much better flavor. Mashed potatoes and gravy were very good.

Google
Food was lukewarm and $20 for a four piece and fries. Also paid $2.25 service charge, I asked the female cashier what the service charge was for she stated that she didn't know. I expected better & the place wasn't busy. The employees were nice though. I also think they should have a sign posted stating a service charge will be added to your order.

Google
I really enjoyed my dinner at Mother’s Best. The staff were great and the food was flavorful, fresh, and crispy. Location is downtown Decatur is really well decorated and has good vibes.

Google
The restaurant is quite small so it could be overwhelming for others. The chicken sandwich hands-down was the best out of the bunch, but also the most expensive . It’s $12 with no side or drink . While the four piece count Chicken bucket was juicy and Crunchy, it did lack seasoning right beside the collard greens. Still recommend on coming here try it out for yourself and see what’s the hype is about

Google
A funky little fried chicken joint. Generous portions. The chicken is crispy, juicy and perfectly seasoned. Fries are amazing and the mashed potatoes & gravy are exceptional. Before we finished our meal, my husband suggested we get another order to go for our Sunday lunch. Will definitely be back.

Google
It's unfortunate that my experience was not as positive as so many others. Perhaps I chose the wrong day to try them out ( New Year's Day). The wait was long... over an hour from start to finish. The wait wasn't worth the mediocrity of the chicken and its high price tag. The chicken appeared old, fried in old oil, oily, rather tasteless and lukewarm in temperature despite the long wait. I truly expected hot and crispy chicken. I received no bread in my order although it mentions that all orders come with bread. The fries weren't hot and nothing spectacular to report regarding the seasoning. The mashed potatoes could have used a bit more gravy and the coleslaw wasn't my favorite (think minced green cabbage ; no carrots). I don't know that I'd visit again, but I wish them well. Normally after paying $41 for 8 pieces of chicken and 3 sides I would have gone inside to request a remake, but after waiting as long as I did the first time around... I didn't have the time to spare to request a remake. I will add this, social media influencer should do more of a honest job when reviewing good items.

Awesomely Aimless Adventures

Google
Top notch. Incredible succulent chicken sandwich and tenders. The collard coleslaw is magnificent. Mashed potatoes and gravy melt in your mouth. You must eat here. The ambience is stellar and so are you when you are eating here. Go now!

Yelp
The chicken was crispy the sides were really good especially with the bread they serve with your order. Absolutely Delicious!!!!

Yelp
On a cold Saturday, my lady and I decided to grab a quick bite to eat at Mother's Best Fried Chicken, and from the looks of it, we weren't the only ones with that idea. The place was bustling, but that only added to the anticipation. Parking was easily accessible, though it could be costly, so if possible, I recommend finding a spot on the street and paying that fee over opting for the parking lot. Upon stepping inside, we noticed a long but steadily moving line. The ambiance immediately stood out to me--it had a nostalgic feel, with sports and entertainment photos and memorabilia adorning the walls. As a fan of that kind of decor, I really appreciated the effort put into the restaurant's aesthetic. As we approached the counter, we saw a massive menu board displaying all the options, making it easy to decide what to order. We went with two chicken sandwiches ($12 each) and a 4-piece bucket of chicken ($18). One nice touch was the courtesy cups of lemonade, which was a kind and refreshing gesture. Just as we finished ordering, a party left, giving us the perfect opportunity to dine in. After about a 10-minute wait, our food arrived--hot and fresh. The chicken sandwiches were served on thick, toasted bread with pickles and Mom's Sauce, which had a flavor reminiscent of Zaxby's sauce but fresher. They were solid, but the real star of the show was the bucket of chicken. The bucket came with two thighs, a leg, a wing, fries, and a few cups of Mom's Sauce on the side. Once the chicken cooled down a bit, I took my first bite--and I couldn't stop eating. The chicken was flavorful, crunchy, well-seasoned, and generously sized. The fries were just as enjoyable--crispy, well-seasoned, and packed with flavor. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed my experience at Mother's Best Fried Chicken. The food was delicious, the ambiance was inviting, and the service was efficient. I'd definitely go back and recommend it to anyone looking for a great fried chicken spot in Decatur.

Yelp
We ordered the 8-pc, bc 4 just wouldn't cut it, red beans, cole slaw and a fry with pickled peppers on the side. We were both hungry so needed to get enough to not be. The chicken was tasty, but nothing spectacular. The red beans and cole slaw both tasted like a vinegar-based bbq sauce (minus the sauce) is a secret ingredient. The toast was good, and the pickled peppers were hot. The service was great.. definitely a highlight of my trip there. Quick, efficient and accurate. Good job! Aesthetically, the spot matches the food, and the food matches the ambiance. That's hard to do. But they did really well there.

Yelp
Tried this spot for the first time and I was hoping to have an amazing food experience. The service was the only thing that I am able to say was actually amazing. The staff was attentive, even with us only ordering food to go. I never saw any staff without a smile and that's a great way to get people into the small, tight-spaced restaurant. The chicken was just chicken. Seemed as if the seasoning was missing from the flour but it wasn't anything special or what it's been hyped up to be. I enjoyed the fries and i love coleslaw that isn't soupy. The coleslaw had a nice balance and was the perfect ratio of dry and moisture (for my taste). I'm glad I had the opportunity to try this spot.

Yelp
I've been craving fried chicken lately. I'll compare these offerings to the last place I had fried chicken, Hattie b's. I ordered an 8 piece chicken, collard coleslaw and fries, pickled jalapeños and a soda. The chicken was crispy and juicy but not very flavorful. There are about 4 hot sauces and two in house sauces they offer. They didn't help. The pieces of chicken were really large in size .When that happens I feel like the flavor never makes it all the way through to the bone. The collard coleslaw would be better on a sandwich. Eating it by itself was a mouth full of mayo and mushy greens. But the fries were a hit. I would recommend those along with tenders. All of the utensils are sporks so prepare to struggle if you're trying to make less mess by forking the meat off of the bone. This place is small, coming with a large group isn't recommended. Parking was easy enough on a Sunday. But with a party of only 2 we needed a strategy to sit at a table. The staff is helpful enough even when you are indecisive. Which was nice. But I don't think I'll be back. Hattie B's wins this round.

Yelp
Man. This chicken is so hot. I had to wait for it to cool off a bit, but at the same time I love how hot and fresh it is. I have to be careful because I'll come back for the chicken. The LA style red beans and spice rice is a different taste than what I'm use to, but maybe I've been eating processed red beans and rice for so long. I don't know, plus it can be freshly made too so lol. But it was cool. The drinks were good. I like how they freestyled it for me. Sitting on the inside to eat was great too. Small and intimate. The staff is awesome. I like the area a lot. Parking can be weird, but from what I can tell. I don't think you can park right at the business. I parked at a lot on the other side of the Marta Station. But I've always liked this area. So, I'll be back. The Mom Sauce for the chicken is good too. But you don't need it because the chicken is too damn good already.

Yelp
On a cold January night, we made a plan to visit Mother's Best. We'd seen the Instagram posts so we were very excited and hungry to try it. Both of us haven't had fried chicken in ages because it's just no longer part of our eating plan. But a treat doesn't hurt! Going in I knew this would be purely a chicken adventure because the sides on the menu didn't seem appealing. They're mostly starches (mashed potatoes, fries, red beans & rice) and a collard greens cole slaw. The location is pretty small fitting about 8 tables. It's packed pretty tight so think very cozy, no privacy. It was busy and there's a bar counter facing the kitchen where orders are taken. Most orders are to-go so don't let that deter you. I loved the nostalgia of the restaurant - the wall art, gaming consoles, music and graphics of the signage. The food - the chicken is served hot and fresh. We loved the crispy skin, Texas toast and the sauce that comes in the bucket. They don't remove the fat but it was a mix of dark & white meat cooked to perfection. We (2 people) ate 6 of the 8 pieces! It's very tasty and nothing like any chicken place we've been to. The fries were delicious but we weren't fans of the red beans with a sprinkle of rice. Overall, I'd order the chicken again. It's perfect to go with a meal you have prepared with sides you prefer. These are amazing for a picnic or to bring to gathering with friends. Next time - we're trying the chicken sandwich and a boozy drink!

Yelp
Came by Mother's best for dinner with friends. Parking in the area can be challenging but there are a few paid lots nearby. Seating inside is fairly scarce so if you have a group of 4 there are only 4 tables that can accommodate you so beware! We ordered a 12 piece bucket with mashed potatoes, collard green coleslaw, and fries with sweet teas all around. The sweet tea tasted like sweet water that came out of a jug. Def a no. The chicken tasted pretty okay, but definitely got soggy. Def could have done with a bit of draining post fry for a bit before throwing it into a bucket. My friends made the comment the chicken seemed like it was fried in old oil. Mashed potatoes tasted very much like boxed mashed potatoes and the gravy was weird. Collared green coleslaw was a hit at the table, but I thought it was fair. Fries here are so good so definitely recommend! The sides are fairly small imo. Grab the vinegar based sauce they have here even though it's an extra charge! So delish!! I would come back and try the tenders and the sandwich and get the fries.

Yelp
Great food and reasonably priced cold draft beer. Although the seating was tight, the music was nice and people were moving in and out pretty quickly. The fries were a 10 and the red beans were a no for me... the rice was overcooked and over seasoned, it didnt taste like regular smoked RB&R, more like spanish rice and overcooked red beans. I will be back to try the porch when the weather warms up
google avatar

Tamara R.

Yelp
I ordered an 8 piece chicken with two sides to go for $32. The two sides I got were the fries and rice & beans. The chicken had great flavor although it was very greasy ( I feel like they seasoned it with some type of curry seasoning) and I really loved the fries. The rice & beans were my least favorite as it was too salty in my opinion. The inside seating at the restaurant is limited and you'll probably have to pay for parking.

Yelp
Best chicken in Decatur... After hearing all of the hype I was glad to be able to check them out without the long lines. I came around 12:30pm on a Friday and it was steady business, but not crowded. It's small on the inside with about 6/7 tables and 4 bar stools. If you follow my reviews then you know, btw I sat at the bar. Asked a few questions before ordering and it was suggested that I grab the 4pc with the red beans and rice. The chicken was hot, fresh, and really good. It came with a wing, drum, breast, and thigh that were all well seasoned. From what I understand they brine the chicken overnight (maybe longer). It also came with the mom sauce which is deliciously delicious. It's like Chick-fil-a sauce x10. All in all I enjoyed this spot and will definitely be back soon for another fried chicken fix. If you sit at the bar, be sure to bring lay the video games...

Yelp
Mother's is located in Calle Latina's old space right next to the Marta station. There is a paid lot down the street & paid street parking. If you're familiar with DTD, you know where to find the free lot. My bestie told me she & her mom stopped by this place and the chicken was good. I don't eat fried chicken often, but when I do...I want that real southern bang! You stand in line, order at the register & get a number. First off, the prices are steep! $18 for four wings was a little absurd, and only comes with a slice of white bread, sides are a la carte. I opted for the $12 tender box - 3 tenders with fries included & I added the mashed potatoes. My friend ordered their alcoholic slushy $10, it was straight. The tenders were a nice size, crispy, meat tender, could use more seasoning though. Crinkle fries were regular but that mash though....while the texture was "velvety" as advertised, it was clearly boxed mash and that gravy was atrocious. Idk whose recipe that gravy originated from, but it needs work & I mean immediately if they want to last. I can't even describe the flavor but upon touching my taste buds it was an immediate "that ain't it". Would I return? I'm good, maybe for the slushy if I happen to be out in DTD hanging out. Listen, in this economy, I refuse to spend my dollar on mediocre food. These restaurants gotta come with it!

Yelp
delicious meal with my dad! we split the four piece chicken and two sides. great value and super fresh. cute place and friendly staff for sure! we got the collard green coldslaw and red beans and rice as our sides. neither of us vibed with the coleslaw but i loved the beans. excited to try the chicken fingers or the chicken sandwich as the bread was fantastic. i'll be back

Lanier G.

Yelp
Just OK... Mother's Best did NOTHING wrong! Chicken was MID , Chicken Sandwich MID, fries BIG TIME, red beans SUB PAR, mashed potatoes SUB PAR, coleslaw DIFFERENT DIFFERENT. The MARKETING TEAM does a great job marketing this place... All in all it was good... we went and now we could take it off our list of places to eat in the city. To each its own... Will not recommend and will not return.
google avatar

Yelp
I went here Sunday 01/12 and ordered my food to-go. If you're craving Chick-fil-A on a Sunday, go here, otherwise Mother's Best is overhyped. The food is expensive and just mid. I guess IG can make anything look good. I ordered the sandwich combo, the tenders, and the rice. The sandwich tasted a lot like Chick-fil-A's. The fries and tenders were just ok. The rice and beans...gross. They were out of the lemonade and the tea, so that's 2 cocktails they couldn't make, but I can't fault them b/c of the snow, maybe they didn't get the ingredients in. Whoever packed my to-go order- trash. My sauces were not sealed and it was all over everything in the bag.
google avatar

Tim C.

Yelp
I don't understand the low review thus far. Just walking by their smell alone is amazing. We took the chicken togo, and for the whole chicken, even the breast was good. Everything was seasoned and brined perfectly. Crisp- fresh. Sides were really good. Red bean and rice and mashed potatoes all had a nice smokey flavor. Collard slaw was very unique. Fries were nicely seasoned as well. Will absolutely be back!
google avatar

Chris W.

Yelp
Awesome service. Hands down good people that run the place. It was crowded but the service was pretty quick to get our food. Didn't really like the spice seasoning on the chicken but it wasn't bad. Got the mashed potatoes and gravy which were fine. Everything was basically ok just not ground breaking. Not sure I would go back again but maybe. The parking situation in downtown Decatur is terrible but that's not this restaurants problem to fix. But $16-18$ to park for 30 mins is nasty work.

Yelp
Ambiance: I visited Mothers Best on Sunday, January 19th, 2025 after hearing so much about it on social media. It's where one of my favorite Latin restaurants use to be before replacing so I knew we were starting off on the right foot. The location is in Decatur square, right next to the train station. It is small but it's nicely decorated with their style decor and quaint. It can't sit many ppl inside, but they have additional seating outside. Service: The line was long as to be expected, I waited about 20 minutes before getting to the counter. Before I made it to the front to order, customer ahead of me let me know that Mother's communicated they were out of bone-in chicken. Once I made it to the register I asked the cashier what pieces they had, then asked if I could do the four piece (usually half a bird) but get all wings. She turned to ask the gentleman standing in the kitchen and when she returned she told me yes. I placed my order then waited outside (yes, it was cold but hey they cont control that!) for my order. I was truly anticipating it and was immediately disappointed. I opened the chicken box and there were 2 wings and 2 drum sticks -- I don't like drum sticks which is why I asked prior to ordering if I could get 4 wings. But to had driven and waited so I didn't let that get the bet of me. And this chicken is not cheap!! Food: The chicken itself was sub-par. From taste and just what I saw, they cooks lots of the chicken ahead and sit it under hot lamps. My chicken was not hot or warm, it was room temperature. The crispy outside was falling off due to condensation from sitting so long. The taste (seasoning) was good but I couldn't enjoy the chicken. I also order the mashed potatoes and the red beans and rice--- not sure what the rice dish was. I won't even review that, just don't order it. The mashed potatoes were good but were cold as well. I may try again once their lines calm down so they don't have to pre-cook so much food. I'm hopeful it will be better next time.

Yelp
This one hurts... I hate giving bad reviews. I wanted to love this place. The decor was real cool. The service was very friendly. The chicken was the worst I've ever had in my life. Worse than Church's chicken at closing time. I ordered the 4 piece with mashed potatoes, a side of red beans and rice, chicken tenders, and French fries. Chicken was room temperature, soggy, greasy, old, and... I wouldn't say flavorless, but very bad flavor. The gravy on the mashed potatoes was almost sweet like barbecue sauce. The red beans and rice were soupy, but the rice was somehow still hard. It did have a good flavor, though, it could not save the side dish. We ended up taking the entire meal back home for the dogs. Again, I feel terrible having to write this. If the food were cheaper, I probably would have skipped this review. But to spend $48 on food for two, and be served $15 worth of regret, people need to know. Go literally anywhere else for chicken.

Yelp
Was excited to try this place from the buzz on social media. Decided to stop by midday on a Friday with a friend. I got the chicken fingers (pictured) and unfortunately the taste was a little on the dry side and probably were sitting for a little time. The fries although looked seasoned unfortunately they were lacking. They also were a little hard and like the fingers tasted like they had been sitting out for a little. My friend got a 4pc chicken and the red beans and rice. I will say their chicken wasn't bad and batter tasted a little different from the fingers and red beans and rice were good. Staff was nice and welcoming and ambiance was like a neighborhood spot, small and probably lively with a weekend crowd as the night progresses. Fingers & fries possibly would be better around a busy time when they are freshly dropped.

kevin m.

Yelp
I ordered the $12 Chicken Sandwich. Chicken was perfectly done, crisp on the outside and juicy on the inside. Next time, I would get the sauce on the side. The abundance of sauce made it a mess to eat as it dripped all over the sandwich. I would prefer about a 1/4 of the sauce! However, this is a great sandwich!

Kyle J.

Yelp
The food is amazing and the service was great. Price matched the portions. I will definitely recommend if you are in the area to stop in and try it.

Yelp
We went to Mothers Best Fried Chicken (Downtown Decatur, GA) last night (2/1/2025). There is no convenient parking nearby so we paid to park in a lot a block away. The service was good and the food came out quickly. We ordered the 8 piece chicken with French fries, Red Beans and Rice, and Mashed Potatoes with Gravy. FYI we ordered our food to-go. The chicken was nothing special and tasted like it had been cooked in old oil and sitting for a while. All of the sides were horrible. I chose this place because of the social media hype and was thoroughly disappointed. To add insult to injury the food was expensive. I Do Not Recommend.

Yelp
A top tier choice for fried chicken in downtown Decatur - even though the line can be out the door, service is quick and friendly. Super cool vibe with N64 games to play at the bar, fun twists on cocktails (can't wait for the to-go window to open up!) and the best fried chicken I've ever had- whether you're going for the chicken sandwich (my personal favorite) the tenders (a crowd pleaser) or the bone in chicken (double brined and packed with flavor and soooo crisp and juicy) the side options give this spot the extra oomph it needs to stand out in the metro. I'm honestly shocked at some of the negative reviews as I haven't ever had dry or cold chicken and the sides and mains are always packed with so much flavor I'm dreaming about it until the next visit. It's not just the name - Mother's best is THE best!

Christy D.

Yelp
This was a great fried chicken sandwich. I got the classic sandwich with their regular sauce. It was very saucy, so would recommend asking for sauce on side possibly. Will definitely go again, and most likely ask for their spicier sauce. I also got the fries, and they were nicely spiced crinkle cut fries.

Yelp
Fried chicken was hot, crunchy and juicy good. Love the big old fashioned bucket they serve it to you in. Brings back memories of the olden days. Came out quick, but I went on a Thursday evening when it wasn't crowded. It's not posted on Yelp, but their hours are 11 am to midnight Wednesday through Sunday. I'm sure the chicken had already been cooked prior, but it was still hot. Great blend of seasonings, tad bit salty, but not too bad. I devoured the leg and wing in 1 minute flat. LOL. Gravy on the mashed potatoes was interestingly good and very different from the usual. Love that buttered thick Texas toast! I will say the chicken is a bit pricey for just 4 pieces and a side, but it's not something I would eat often. They're my number 3 for the best fried chicken. Busy Bee is still a firm 1st place and that Paula Deen is a firm second place and maybe even a tie with Busy Bee. That girl has got some darn good fried chicken! Oh and Yardbird in Vegas. LOL
google avatar

Ryan T.

Yelp
Absolutely ridiculously delicious yard bird! The best red beans and rice I've ever tasted, crispy crunchy fries, and buttery soft mashed taters and gravy. Cheery, upbeat service and decor nicked from my 8th grade bedroom (I had / have incredible taste).

Yelp
Great fried chicken and red beans. Small place with six tables inside, and a nice patio outside. Friendly staff. Will definitely come again.

Jasmine R.

Yelp
Don't do it!! The chicken is basic. There is nothing special about the seasoning or flavor of the chicken. I will say the chicken has a nice crunch but aside from that there is nothing noteworthy about the actual taste of the chicken. The prices are outrageous and majority of the meals are served as family meals. If you're hoping to get a 2 piece and a side think again! Everything is served to feed 4-6 people. Additionally the sides are way too small for the price. The inside is very small and there is little parking. This is a prime example of gentrification. They posted a few pictures of black historians and figures but forgot to include the seasoning. Don't waste your time. Just go to Popeyes.

Too expensive and not that tasty. We spent over $50 for 1/2 chicken, 3 strips & 2 sides. Chicken kinda soggy, but did have some taste. the fries were good. Very friendly staff. That was my first and last time eating there; should've gone to JJ's

Yelp
Absolutely not! This is not my idea of good fried chicken. This was my first and last time going. Before entering there was a sign in the door about bone in chicken being at a limit. After waiting in line for about 25 minutes , we ordered our food, which was 8 pc wings/drumsticks because they were out of thighs ad breasts, and waited about 20 more minutes for the food to arrive. We got it to go because the place was packed. We get to the car and looked in and saw that the pieces of chicken were HUGE! It didn't stop there, it was greasy, tasteless and the breading was falling off the chicken. Totally not worth the drive or money!
