MOTOI Gyoza – Kyoto - a MICHELIN Guide Restaurant

"Motoi Gyoza is a gyoza dumpling restaurant owned and operated by a French-trained chef. He first made dumplings to delight his daughter, because he saw so little of her due to his work. Two of her favourite ingredients are shrimp and chives, so they take centre stage in his ‘Papa Gyoza’, which uses no garlic. The crimped edges are crispy and fragrant, and the addition of ginger and coriander makes it even more nutritious. These gyoza dumplings are little parcels of love." - Michelin Inspector

In general are quite good and interesting Gyozas, order papa, moto and provenzal. Look, skin and crispiness on gyozas 10/10, flavor itself of the filling, not that good, lack of seasoning, i understand the Papa’s were made for a child mouth and the dipping with Olive oil and salt are a great add on, but the other ones had nothing special. Provenzal was surprising at start, kinda tomato and herbs taste but after 2 are quite boring and the staked taste is weird. Worth a visit is you are around? Sure, try it. Service and ambient was quite cold

Decent gyozas. Place is a little smokey and needs better ventilation. Bathroom was very clean. Ordered all the different types of gyozas. Favourite is papa’s gyoza made for his daughter with shrimp etc.

Absolutely fantastic! Several varieties of yummy gyoza including veggie ones, which was great for me! We also had herb/lettuce salad and a couple of beers. 100% recommend!

We wanted a salad to balance the gyoza, but it was about double what we were willing to pay, so we had some rice instead. Dumplings were wrapped and fried well, but the filling was both very bland and underseasoned. Their signature olive oil and salt dip, while inoffensive, was equally flat. We found ourselves looking around in confusion; surely this wasn't the place we had seen raved about online, and that had reached the michelin guide (albeit 2022). We had planned for another round but decided to leave early and head to a combini on the way home. Service was in theme with the food and very muted. Not that we minded (we had little to complain about here), but expect servers akin to western teenagers working their first job. Ordering is done through a tablet so this had little impact on our overall experience. Asahi was fresh and poured well. Pineapple soda was also very good. It seems the soda syrups are all homemade.

We came along way to dine here. Unfortunately the menu was extremely small and they were out of alot. There are 5 types of gyoza and they were sold out of 3. We went at 4pm. It wasn’t busy.We got 2 wine and a motoi gyoza and went somewhere else to eat.

Jun 2024. We ordered Vegetable, Motoi and Papa's for trying. Papa's had done meat in the filling, I couldn't tell the difference between vegetable and motoi gyozas, anyhow they were nice.

Is really so so! The service is not that efficient than expected tho this is quick serve dish! The dumplings are really so so, overall it very light taste! 90% of the customers are western foreigns, rarely seeing any Japanese! I would say 王将is much better!

A nod has been given to this very cool gyoza spot that also features a wild and delicious brûlée potato salad. Desperate for greens do not miss the farm salad with shiso leaves. Vegetarian dumplings were loaded with shitake and more. The motoi dumplings rock. Soju drinks are super fresh and good and non alcoholic drinks are also good. Service is friendly and the price is right. I love that it’s this sweet quiet spot off the market.
