Detroit’s Best Burgers | Eater Detroit

"Detroiters have been turning to Delray slider spot Motz since 1929. While there are fancier burgers on the menu, many go for the simplicity of a griddled burger or perhaps go wild with the double-stack. Motz’s old-school burgers are only upstaged by throwback prices: Sliders start at only $2.75 each. Add cheese for only 25 cents more. Both locations in Detroit and Redford accept online orders. Vibe check: This nearly century-old spot is family-friendly and affordable." - Danny Palumbo

Detroit’s Best-Value Restaurants: An Essential Guide - Eater Detroit

"Since 1929, Detroiters have turned to this Delray burger spot for budget-friendly sliders. Get the classic slider hamburger for $2 or splurge on the double cheeseburger, ringing in at $3.50. Be advised: It will probably take a few to fill up and make sure to bring cash." - Serena Maria Daniels

Had to stop at this iconic burger joint. Delicious smash burgers in a family-owned small business. If you're in Detroit, grab a burger!

After many years of eating many sliders at many places, Motz's on Fort Street has become my clear favorite. It's not my neighborhood place and it has very limited hours (breakfast/lunch only, M-F only -- very unusual for a white castle!), so I'm not able to get there as often as other lesser joints, but that just makes every visit a treat! The sliders are perfect, the beef still thick enough to know that you're eating a burger, instead of being squashed down into a single-atom thin veneer. The buns are just the right size instead of oversized to trick you like some other places, yet they don't get soggy from the toppings and condiments. The onion rings and shakes are perfectly done every time no matter how busy they are (and this is one of the rare places that doesn't mind when you order a shake). Service is exactly what it ought to be: homey, warm, and ever so slightly gruff only because they're focused on being efficient and cranking through orders so that nobody waits too long for carryout; they pay good attention to you when dining in at the handful of counter seats. Motz's is a gem born of a bygone era, and I'm so glad we still have it.

I've known this franchise for years, but never tried it out until today. The food was delicious. My burger fried onions were fresh, and I love that it's not dripping in grease.

Google
They ran out of bacon, but the burger and chicken sandwich were both awesome!!! The shake was so creamy and just the right amount is sweet. I can't wait to come back for another visit (get bacon, you know I'm coming 😋) going to try the fish next time too

Great iconic Detroit burgers that have served Southwest Detroit for decades. Clean restaurant and the prices for regular hamburger sized sliders start at just $2.50! Amazing!

Google
Saw this place pop up on a Facebook Reals and looked so good I had to try it out. 1 - Very friendly staff 2 - Spotless and very clean 3 - Had the double cheeseburger and fish sandwich. The burger was not the typical slider. Very fresh meat and tasted of high quality. Cooked to perfection! A must try location if you want to enjoy a Detroit style slider!

Google
As i stand here, waiting for our milkshakes, I'm still astounded at the quality of the food we just finished. They took the white castle concept and infused it with that local joint mojo. Simple menu, cheap prices, but out of this world quality. Highly recommend eating at the location so you can get the food fresh. The shoestring fries were perfectly seasoned and complimented the hot and juicy sliders. Onion rings were great too! For 4 sliders, fries, onion rings and 2 drinks, price came out to about $21! Can't beat that.

Yelp
It's a tiny place but please do not let that stop from visiting because you will not be disappointed. This is my go to burger place when someone wants a burger. Be willing to wait a little longer when you see people hanging outside but like I said, "DO NOT LET THAT STOP YOU, GO GET THAT BURGER!!"

Yelp
Motz's is one of those Detroit white porcelain slider joints that are basically all over the Metro. It might just be the best one. French Fries ($3.49) - Very similar to a McDonald's fry. Lightly salted, decent crisp, rather thin. Interior isn't that fluffy. It's an okay fry. Double Cheeseburger ($4) - The sliders come with the classic mustard, ketchup, onion, pickle combo, with two nice thick 5/8 inch patties that fill most of the bun, good beefy taste. The melted cheese covers the rest of the ingredients perfectly. Everything comes together on a nice steamed bun. It's a bit more expensive than other slider places, but the patties are just that much bigger as well. This is the quintessential Detroit style slider and probably the best of the bunch. I don't crave sliders very often, but when I do, I'll be going to Motz again.

Yelp
94 years. Finally got to experience the deliciousness. A single with cheese is all I need. The onion rings were on point. A great tradition.

Rick R.

Yelp
Yes, do this. All things in life should be this good. Nothing better than the smell of the Motz cologne you wear all day from spending just five minutes in that place, and don't dare set that sack of burgers on your car seat on your drive back to work, do it once and you'll know what I mean. Slider heaven!

Yelp
Came in and I was greeted by a very nice person who took our order. We got there at 11:30. Thank God because it got packed at noon. People waiting out the door. These burgers were just flat out. Excellent! And maybe the next best thing was just watching how they make them. I cannot wait to go back, and frankly, I am craving them right now as I write this! One of the few things in life where the buildup is not as good as the fact. These burgers are as good or better than what people say.
google avatar

Mike G.

Yelp
Great little take out place. Gotta get the double cheeseburger and tried the crispy chicken sandwich and fries. I'll be back for sure. So good. Straight up no frills slider. Crispy chicken sandwich could have used some more sauce though!

Yelp
Sliders are always amazing. Can't go wrong with Motz's a neighborhood tradition for over 40+ years great staff and fresh baked cookies on Wednesdays are a must try son.

Lynette R.

Yelp
I have always had several Cheeze Burgers and fries from Motts's Burgers. Myself and my late husband George went in the area would stop by for a hot , tasty burger. The staff, and owners are always happy to see us. Keep up the good work. Lynette

Yelp
Best burgers ever! Friendly staff! Been coming here for years. I love that it's family owned. Worth the trip every time.

Yelp
If you haven't had a Motz burger, do yourself a favor and make a point to get one (or two or three), some onion rings and a shake. No-frills burger place that offers tasty burgers, awesome onion rings, great fries and spectacular shakes. So very, very good!

Jim B.

Yelp
Nothing special. Over priced. Just typical Motz overhype. Place is kinda a dump for what you'd think this guy would own.

Yelp
I've been going to this landmark of a burger joint since the early 70's when the grill was in the corner of the place and burgers were .40 cents. No fries back then just a bag of chips! I visited this great place celebrating my brothers passing as he too was a loyal customer of Motz's! Nothing better than a double with cheese. Know nothing about their fries because I've never had them and will only have a bag of Better Made chips!
google avatar

Yelp
It can be argued by me with conviction that this is the best burger on the planet for the smashed/slider varietal. This is a pilgrimage that must be made from as far as Mecca. Employees are stellar, the smell on the approach is outer worldly and the burger dissolved in the mouth. Eat here before you die.

Yelp
I am in love with this place! Grilled onion burger goodness w/o the gas that the place with the white building gives you in Illinois. I got two double cheeseburgers, fries and onion rings and my best friend got a chicken sandwich (go figure). Onions rings are excellent, fries were just ok. The burgers are the bomb. Juicy, hot cheesy, just delicious. The chicken sandwich was good, too. My best friend said the chicken sandwich was better than the burger, but what does she know??? I wish this place was here. Located in a very industrial part of Detroit so don't expect any bells and whistles here, but do expect great food!

Yelp
Classic Detroit blue collar slider joint. Just delicious sliders! She pulls those burger patty balls outta the prep drawer and plops them On the flat top. Once they get going it's the sliced onions on top. Prob a dozen burgs going at once. Non stop orders and line cooks banging em out. Mustard ketchup on the bun. 2 sliders & thin long fries & a Diet Coke was $7. Sliders on a great bun looks messy but isn't. Tons of flavor and hot as balls the meat was. Wow never really had one like it, delicious. Hard to describe. A wet burg if u will but not soggy u know what I means?!? Cash only! Decent line for lunch that I beat by a few min. Check it out when u by the bridge! Eat in there's I don't know 8 diner seats or most carry out.

Yelp
Good burger it is simple and very tasty. I would go here again if I was I. The area. They were very friendly and the shakes were veery good. A good spot to get a cheese burger.

Yelp
Heartbroken and extremely hangry. We missed the world famous Motz's Hamburgers by 5 minutes! They close at 4:00 pm (on Fridays). Hunger was at a peak following a drive out to and back from The Henry Ford Museum. A kind lady closing the Burgerstand shared some fries, which she had in hand. The sits in a roughened neighborhood and an earlier closing time best for business. The Motz's has seen better days, but from other reviews here and elsewhere this is a place to visit. Just mind their hours.

Yelp
DETROIT SLIDERS, I Voted MOTZ number one Happy National Burger Day OK folks being raised in the hood this place has always been number one with me, formally called Mott's it's still all the same great freshest juicy burgers and coffee they've always had. A small type white porcelain building with a dozen stools you get to see the racks of fresh some balls of burgers throw on a flat grill with heavy stringy onions Oh Yea. Directly across from Detroit's produce terminal where the movie Hoffa was filmed and next to the old 4th precinct of Detroit's finest police department. A must try for all you Carters and Telway fans. They really have the most friendly staff to go along with those juicy burgers

Yelp
Awesome burgers all around! It mainly take out here, no place to sit inside really but totally worth it. A true gem!

Yelp
Sliders grande! That's what I say about these burgers smothered in caramelized onions pickles, mustard and ketchup!!! I've been going to this place forever. It's just your extraordinary slider place that you never seem to get enough if. 5 stars for the taste and the cleanliness. I'm glad they accept credit and cashapp!!!!

Yelp
After having it I wasn't impressed, the food wasn't bad but it wasn't what it was hyped up to be I'd try something else on the menu but for now it only gets 3 stars from this Cowboy.

Yelp
It is super good best cheeseburger in the world definitely go there really good just go

Yelp
You walk up to the counter and order for the first time with trepidation. It is a tiny place that is basically carry out only. There are a wild mix of characters waiting in line: construction workers, truck drivers, people who appear to be homeless, business men in suits, policemen. There is no real kitchen, They cook the food on a grill right in front of you. They have about five menu choices. Pretty cheap prices. An old time hamburger stand atmosphere. You worry. This the location seems a bit sketchy. You cannot get any read from the weird mix of customers, not from the sometimes gruff but very polite and friendly personalities who work there. Is this going to be awful? At least it does not cost much. You can always dump it and go elsewhere. Then you will try your little burger or chicken and SURPRISE! It is awesome. You now want to eat here every day. How the heck is this little place kept so secret? The always fresh hamburgers are amazing, maybe the best you ever had, but the chicken is even better! Get the onion rings. They are great. The fries are kind of Meh.

Yelp
Absolutely rock solid good slider joint. Not the best, in my opinion, as that still belongs to Greene's Hamburgers in Farmington Hills, but that is also a subjective thing, as tastes differ person-to-person. This place has *nothing* to hang their head about, and it's quite apparent why they been around as long as they have. Believe it or not, there is more meat on these sliders than there is on the sliders at Greene's, and I'm not complaining about that at all...Greene's could honestly stand to beef up their sliders a bit, by say, 30% or so in their normal patty. Motz's are slightly more expensive ($2 each, as opposed to Greene's $1.85 each), but you do get more for your money. The beef is good, and you get a bit in each bite that you take. As well, the onions that are fried up with the beef are quite good, and the pickles are fine, too, though I prefer Greene's pickles over these for this particular application. Were I just eating pickles to have pickles, the Motz's pickles would be the winner, but on the slider, I prefer Greene's. Seriously, though, that's just picking nits. These are good sliders, and if Greene's is the "A" game, then these are surely "B/B+". It's more than just respectable...it's quite good. Perhaps the #2 in the area. This was my first time there, and I must say that it happily impressed me. Also good: the people, and the facility. The folks I dealt with were respectful, polite, peaceable folk who did their jobs well. The place itself is *CLEAN*...almost surprisingly so. They keep their joint up to snuff, cleanliness-wise. You can see the entirety of the operation right there in front of you, and you're at ease that they're keeping things clean and that you're not "rolling the dice" with a place that may/may not be keeping things clean and sanitized. To me, it looks like they're doing a great job keeping the place up. I do not know if they have a bathroom to use, as I didn't need to use it, so I can't comment on that at all. The only real difficulty with the place is that they close quite early every day: I think that it's 3 or 4PM, and that's *it*. Not even *close* to dinner service, so plan accordingly. Still, you've gotta give them credit: if they can make a go of it with truncated hours like that, you *know* they're getting things *right*. Overall, it was a plainly positive experience at Motz's. Better than just OK, it hit on many cylinders, and while it did not dethrone the king, it's a nice contender for second place. Not to be missed if you're around there...it's nice to know it's available, and that you can count on it being rock solid good. Always a plus in my book.

Yelp
I'll just first say the sliders are as awesome as everyone basically is saying here. I'm 43 years old, and have been eating here since I was a very young kid. I've had there sliders literally hundreds of times in my life. My dad worked for GM at Cadillac then Hamtramack (sp?) since I was born. And he's brought these home as long as he's worked downtown. I've never reviewed them though until today. My dad officially retired today after 40+ years, and these burgers remind me of all those days he went to work and brought home the food while we sat around playing like kids do. So these sliders remind me of that sacrifice he made for us, which makes me wish there were 6 stars. Congratulations Dad! Thanks for bringing home those greasy bags of sliders we could smell from the other side of the house!
google avatar

Eli R.

Yelp
This is one of my favorite burger joints I've ever been too! Classic slider seared on an extremely hot flat top grill with those amazing sweet onions! I usually throw down for a 2 - 3 doubles with cheese, & extra pickles! I'm a truck driver, and found this place about 3 1/2 years ago when making deliveries in the area. I make it a point to stop every time it's possible! Some people aren't used to the look of the slider so sometimes that throws them off, and they don't try it. You know what they say, "You can't judge a book by its cover."
google avatar

Yelp
I'm throwing Motz's the nickel...five big stars for the whole experience goin' down on Fort Street. Start with a beautifully sunny Spring day in the gritty working class downriver community known as Delray and layer in a pair of stools at the counter overlooking Motz's grill and some of the best sliders this side of Telway....winner every time. The sliders here start as a ball of freshly ground beef smothered with onions on the grill. These are not the minced onions you'll get at a White Castle but rather a large entangled mass of white onion goodness. Watching the chef...ok the cook...I loved the unique touch of putting the dish towel over the buns on the grill to seal in the steam. I'd never seen this move before but really loved the result...a moist bun with a super tasty slider w/ cheese inside. And I love how friendly the help is here. Had some easy conversation with our server at the counter about the 88 years this place has been in business. It is easy to see why Motz's has so many dedicated regulars. Five stars all day long.

Yelp
So how does a greasy-spoon hamburger joint rate 5-stars?!?! Ahhhh, enduring old-fashioned quality and staying true to their heritage. I must say, Motz's has been placed on my dining radar for life. I am a fan of the corner hamburger joints of old, the ones that have endured throughout time, and still carry on the traditional simple menu with sliders as their star feature. I stopped in, recognizing the name as I was driving along Fort Street. Reviews I have read over the years would constantly cite Motz's as a comparison standard by which others were judged. A very simple menu awaits the casual diner upon entering. You certainly won't get lost in pages and pages of diner offerings here. Go to the order spot, head up and look straight ahead - it's pretty much all there. Hand-written, ready to be changed as needed. I ordered a couple cheeseburger sliders, with everything. Cooked onions, the works. I was rewarded with two delicious burgers, made perfectly to the unofficial 'slider specifications'. If you don't know what I am talking about, that's why the specs are unofficial. You know it when you see it, smell it, and finally taste it. A temporary setback was their fryer was down and wouldn't be repaired until after my visit. No problem, that just gives me a reason to repeat my visit and try the fries! If you are in the area and running up or down Fort Street, taking in all of the local cultural sights, why not stop in and place a friendly order to dine in or perhaps take out ....

Yelp
Fantastic burger joint. Burger guru Kevin Alexander has it as #2 on his best burgers in country list. I was passing through Detroit so I of course had to give it a shot. Not sure if this is the second best burger I've ever had but it was pretty dang good. A lot of what makes these so tasty is the simplicity of them. There are no frills when it comes to Motz's. Just a classic burger cooked as well as you can cook one. The menu promotes the sliders, but I went ahead with a full sized burger (I was admittedly very hungry that day). Came out exactly as I ordered it and very quick. Extremely juicy without making the bun soggy. I wasn't sure whether the chili fries were going to be worth it but they hit the spot more than I could have ever expected. Absolutely delicious. Overall Motz's is a solid burger. Worth going a bit out of your way if you're passing through Michigan.

Yelp
I'm a native of the Detroit area and never knew about Motz's. I recently discovered it in a google search for best burgers in Detroit. Motz's sits in Delray on Detroit's southwest side. It's across the street from the Detroit Produce Terminal, a huge building that's impossible to miss. The place has been serving for 90 years and it's easy to see why. The burgers are very good. Whether slider or king size you can't go wrong. Friendly staff and patrons, too.

Yelp
After seeing this place on a T.V. show and reading the great reviews I decided to make a trip to see what all the fuss was about in my city. Clean establishment but what got me was the lady cook who used her phone WITH her gloves on then wiped her gloves off with what looked like a wet nap. Then she proceeded to touch the buns which made me a little pissed off. Phones carry more germs than we realize. But anywho I'm like ok she did wipe them on a napkin so it should be semi ok to eat (other restaurants do worst). The smell of the burgers were ok while cooking. FRESH toppings were used which had me pleased to the core! Got my food hot and fresh BUT no FLAVOR in sight! I mean not a pinch of salt and speck of pepper. NOTHING. Two star review for terrible taste that I had such anticipation for. Oh bad yes I got the jalapeño burger and yet it tasted super flat.
google avatar

Jessica R.

Yelp
I'm not really a slider person, but the two cheeseburgers I ordered were perfectly tasty. I especially liked the way the onion flavor permeated through the entire sandwich. The meat was still juicy, and the cheese formed a nice gooey layer. Good seasoning throughout. I was especially happy with the side of fries. They came out piping hot, crisp, and with an adequate amount of salt. Could not ask for more.
google avatar

Ron R.

Yelp
It's a small place only open from 10-4 Monday to Friday, the burgers there r great and very affordable. I got the Mexican burger and it was a pretty big burger for $6, definitely worth the try.

Yelp
You can't pass this place without the aroma of grilled onions and greasy meat wafting into your car. Motz's is something of a staple and I am fortunate enough to work in close proximity making this an ideal lunch spot. Motz's burgers are simple but oh, so delicious. There's nothing that well grilled onions can't make better. Some pickles, mustard, and ketchup and voila! A great burger is made. I haven't explored beyond their cheeseburgers, because why mess with novelty and simple deliciousness? Motz's has stuck to tradition and there's no need to mix in fancy ingredients or a large menu. They serve up a good ol burger with good ol hospitality and there's nothing better than that in a world where ginger beer and truffle oil has taken over.

Craig R.

Yelp
This place is the truth! Burgers are hot and amazing. Only a few seats, But you can always sit in the car a enjoy them too!

Yelp
Best burgers in Michigan! Tiny hole in the wall restaurant that doesn't look like much but produces the most delicious burgers. Fresh, tasty and amazing service/prices. P. S. The owner is a hunk ;)

Yelp
Old School. Real burgers hand pressed on the grill with onions and cheese if you want it. It's not pretty, it's not pretentious, what it is, is good! Don't wander in here looking for an espresso or sparkling waters, do come for the steamy cheesy burger deliciousness. One of the original Detroit burger joints.

Arlisa P.

Yelp
The best burgers & onion rings I ever had! The beef was juicy, & flavorful, fresh toppings & the bun tasted like a fresh homemade roll! I can't wait to take my family to get some excellent food from Motz's restaurant! I was impressed by the quality of the beef, I'm Wowed! I can't believe I've missed out on such a great place! My new go to for a awesome burger!

Yelp
Tasty, juicy sliders and warm customer service. This place is great for a quick lunch pickup.

Yelp
Best little hole in the wall , nothing short of fresh and delicious. Fast and semi-friendly

Yelp
This place rocks! the burgers are soooo good and they melt in your mouth. I got 2 double cheese burgers with extra onion, and onion rings - and I don't smell like outright onion. I sat at the counter this time and chatted up with a couple married 44 years; they say they have a regular weekly date there and they seemed so happy. Motz's must be part of their secret for staying together :) That food is awesome
google avatar

Allen L.

Yelp
Motz was great. A fantastic "slider" - onions grilled underneath a burger underneath the bun. It was simple and simply perfect. We used to say "good, fast, cheap; pick two." Motz is pretty much all three. I also had an egg and bacon sandwich on white toast. This is what Blimpy's should be .... and sometimes is, on a good day. What else do you need? Service was fast, friendly and on the ball. The woman running the grill started my order as soon as she heard me tell the waitress. I'm keeping this short and sweet just like Motz.
google avatar

Liz W.

Yelp
I have to agree with Dil, Motz is really a four and a half but I am not bumping them up the half star just yet. Motz is not the best slider ever for my palate but really amazingly tasty at any rate. They are a close second if you will to my childhood faves Bates' (the Livonia one on Five Mile). I guess you just get accustomed to certain tastes and ways of doing things so that probably affects my review. I think it would be closer to a tie except for the size which also reflects in the price. I prefer a smaller slider on a crappier bun for the ideal meat to bun ratio. They did not blink here though at my request for heavy everything (ketchup, mustard, grilled onions and pickles- I am not deviating from traditional slider toppings ever) so that made up for it. Given the size you will need less sliders to make you happy, I normally do three and two was plenty here so I guess price is roughly the same. Fries were good and like Dil (again) you pretty much make me happy with malt vinegar and salt as an option on my fries. I am not much of a fry girl but these definitely are worth a try. My husband is not a fan of canned beverages so that was a minus here for him but I don't mind a bit personally. Atmosphere is appropriate, people are friendly and service is lickety split. Nothing to complain about at all. That in itself is happiness. Yes I smelled like onions the rest of the day but it was worth it.

Yelp
The three staff members working were wearing clean black shirts with the Motz's logo. They didn't seem tired or angry, as one might expect in a busy and grease-soaked diner. They looked happy to serve us, and acted accordingly. The others ordered quickly, and Frank got a corndog for some reason. When I asked the cashier for three cheeseburgers, no ketchup, a chocolate malt, and onion rings, he asked me: "Are you on a slider crawl?" "well, no. But we eat a lot of burgers." His question implied that slider crawls are a thing. The idea of even one measly slider at each of Detroit's slider places is a little horrifying to me. I imagine them floating in the nether-regions of my stomach, pounding on the walls and wailing like a group of lost souls newly dropped into hell. I consider myself a courageous eater, but there are some lines that we are not meant to cross. The Sliders at Motz's come standard with mustard, ketchup, onion, and pickles. They are a little bit bigger than Telway's and fill you up accordingly. In traditional slider fashion, the onions are cooked alongside the patties, and then directly under the patties until the burger is combined with buns that have been steamed under towels laid across the griddle. The patties are cooked all the way through to form a kind of lifeless shade of brown/gray that you might find in a fast food burger, although a bit more attractive. I was worried they didn't have the grill on high enough- neither the patties nor the onions had any char to them. The strings of onion were brown and starting to caramelize. Only Carl ordered a normal sized burger, the bacon burger, as the rest of us couldn't resist the sliders. The burger looked great, especially next to the turdly-looking slider sitting next to it. After devouring it, he described the patty to be the same as the sliders, cooked through but without any char. It sounded gross to me, but he enjoyed it well enough. My patties were lifeless, not salted, and barely beefy -- All the things that I am against when it comes to any kind of burger. The yellow mustard provided no contrast to any of the other flavors, so adding more was confusing. I felt like a child wandering into a conversation that I couldn't understand. It didn't make anything stand out or fade away. One thing that stood out to me was the pickles, which tasted extra fresh - they stood in stark contrast to what I found was a truly unremarkable burger. Yelp
Classic sliders, regular customers, and a friendly staff. These burgers are oniony delicious. Fries and rings are awesome too. I head in here every time I am in the area.

Yelp
No frill, just good ol' home grilled burgers and even better ambiance. Now I'm not going to sugar coat it - I was visiting from out of town and heard about this place and the drive there seemed a bit sketchy. But it was worth it! We ordered and sat at the counter next to a lovely couple that have been going there for years! and on top of that, it was lunch time during the week and a few more locals and regulars came in. Such a great atmosphere to be apart of. The guys behind the counter were great as well. They over heard that we're visiting and he gave us a small dessert - ice cream with bananas and chocolate syrup - great! Back to the burgers - man. its just.. man... simple, delicious, juicy, beautiful. That's all I have to say about that! Watching them grill the burgers is like watching art in motion! I wish we still had places like this in New York! If you're passing through Detroit, be sure to check this place out!

Yelp
Ok, so I ask my Dad along on my sunny morning jaunt down to Belle Isle because I know he loves everything "Detroit". It was a great ride with all Dad's little bits of Detroit trivia and then Dad said, "I gotta show you this little burger joint". This is where I get a little nervous because with Dad (who has no fear) you could end up on any of the "wrong streets" in Detroit ~ not that there's many of those. We cruise down Jefferson and I pray he doesn't expect me to park my pretty shiny new Dodge Charger in front of some strip of abandon buildings to go to the one tiny "burger joint' left standing. He doesn't. He points out a tiny building on the "corner" of a strip of abandon buildings, charming, really. We park in the private lot, street side across from a police station - there's a plus. We go in and I am pleasantly surprised by an old school immaculately clean counter diner. Very friendly service, greats us with a smile and the menus are overhead and marked in grease pencils. I'm liking it so far! Dad orders for us. Sliders with the works (ketchup, mustard, pickles and onions) and a basket of fries. I watch the cook whoop out the little round balls of beef and quickly set to work "splatting" them into patties on the decade seasoned grill with loads of onions. You could tell the cook loved this part, she was great at "splatting" them flat. She was pretty young so it wasn't the years of practice, just the genuine joy of "splatting". Cooked fast and served, they were tiny bits of heaven without even an over load of grease - just right! Dad remembers walking to this place when the burgers were just 12 cents! Good spot! Although though they aren't 12 cents anymore they were still a great price and delicious!

Yelp
Everything perfect about what I imagine a burger joint from the 50's to be like. (Even though it started in the 20's) Service, sliders, and the stink on my clothes when I leave. You've been to comet and the like - all imitations. This place - so legit. I wish there were more authentic, historic restaurants like this in my life. Warning: cash only.

Yelp
Amazing sliders every time. Staff is friendly and you cannot beat the price. One of the best gems in Detroit. Not very much seating but the food makes up for it.

Yelp
+ Good Burgers, Friendliness of staff and customers - Small seating area, flavorless onion rings, I read about this place in an article in the USA Today earlier this month. It was included in a list titled, "10 great places to sink your teeth into a burger". Needless to say, I had to check it out in a recent run to Detroit to see the Tigers play some ball. I was not disappointed. There is a private lot with a good amount of parking. Upon entering the establishment we walked up to the counter on the right of everyone sitting chowing down on their burgers. This is one small place. We put our order in and both of us chose the $5 special that includes two sliders, fries, and a drink. I also wanted to try an order of onion rings and the waitress/cashier suggested we could have one combo with the onion rings and the other with fries at no additional charge--works for me! There are only about 7 stools at the main counter to sit on, thankfully a couple of patrons just finished their meals and we hurriedly scooped up the choice seats. The waitress quickly wiped down the counter and we were all set. A couple of cans of diet coke and glasses were presented to us and we happily watched our food being prepared. The sliders are indeed little balls of fresh ground beef flattened down on the grill with loads of onions (see pics). So, you really have to like onions in this place if you want the classic slider! Our meals came in no time at all. The fries were very tasty, reminding me of Mcdonald's fries (a good thing) and they were cooked just enough to give it that light golden color. The onion rings were massive, though did not have enough flavor. Thankfully they were not greasy, as lots of onion rings come these days. The sliders were cooked well and the onions gave them a nice flavor. I would assume they would not have enough flavor if they did not have the onions--something to experiment with on my next visit. The bun was nice and soft. Ketchup and Mustard were on the table for us to use. I must say, it was a very tasty meal, and a steal at $5 a plate. Perhaps I will also try some of their other menu items the next time I'm in. What I did notice about this place that made the experience that much more enjoyable was the friendliness of everyone. The waitress saw my camera and I began to tell her how we got to know of the place. She told us that ever since the article was written in the USA Today, many out-of-towners have stopped in. Even the local TV stations came in to feature them in their own story. It's nice to hear a little joint like this getting some good recognition. We also had a friendly discussion with a gentleman sitting beside us who was heading to the Red Wings preseason game. We talked sports and weather--it was a great time had by all. I must say, it's nice to be welcomed with open arms!
