This is always been a fun place to stop by on the way out to pahrump or just an excuse to drive up the mountain and hang out somewhere. The bar has always been smokey, so I haven't really spent a lot of time inside as cigarette smoke doesn't really get along with me and my annoying allergies. But hanging out outside was always a plus especially when the barbecue food was around.
Of course, things change over time and this is what happened to the source of food here. It was awesome when John was here slow cooking some amazing barbecue. However, he has moved on it seems and the food source was replaced with Maria's tacos (Mexican food).
I do love Mexican food, so I had to give it a try. With that, I'll start with some of the positives. For one, service was awesome. It didn't take too long to get the food and the girl behind the counter/window was very friendly and pleasant to talk to. The menu was mostly familiar to most your Roberto's like establishments. With a few less items on the menu due to the size of the kitchen I'm guessing. So it was pretty easy to find something that sounded good despite having many things to pick from still (I went with the super nachos). The presentation of the food also gets a thumbs up as the nachos came out looking amazing, as you can see from the attached image.
As for the experience of eating said nachos, I wouldn't describe it as memorable. The presentation was nice, but the overall temperature was cool too cold. To be fair, it was cold outside with the first layers of snow forming everywhere. However, even the chicken seemed cold as if it was served chilled and not freshly cooked. The prices have also significantly gone up from the menu images posted here by others. The nachos were $14.99, which seemed a bit steep. This didn't help the experience.
Again, the service was amazing. The girl behind the counter/window was awesome. Presentation, awesome. Wait time, awesome. Size of plate, perfect for a normal nacho order. It was just the temperature, flavor, and price that throws everything off. I kind of felt like I was on the strip but in the middle of the mountains. Since I don't like tourist pricing, and the first impression is so important, I couldn't say if I'd give it another try. I'd still come back to visit the saloon from time to time though.
