Amtrak Opens Bar Stocked With Beer From Local Breweries to Lure Commuters Into Penn Station - Eater NY

"In the latest attempt to make the billion-dollar Midtown development Moynihan Train Hall happen, train service Amtrak has launched full bar service inside its shiny new travelers lounge on the upper level of the sprawling transit station. It’s a far cry from the sad bags of chips and burnt coffee that travelers up and down the East Coast find in-transit on busy routes between cities like New York, Washington, D.C., and Boston. Inside the rail hub, the bar is stocked with wine, cocktails, and beers from local breweries including Five Boroughs Brewing and Brooklyn Brewery, according to the company. Throughout the day, La Colombe coffee, salads, sandwiches, and “complimentary snacks” will also be available. However, not everyone will get to partake: The Metropolitan Lounge — where the bar is located — is open seven days a week only to higher-tier Amtrak customers, including those with first-class tickets, and customers who buy day passes to the lounge. In the year since Moynihan Train Hall — an expansion on Penn Station, Midtown’s subterranean transit center that is best known as the worst train station in the country — debuted, it’s been drawing in fancier food businesses to try and position itself as a place that travelers don’t want to avoid at all costs. Along with pints from Brooklyn Brewery, diners can grab Blue Bottle cappuccinos, Magnolia Bakery cupcakes, and smoked salmon sandwiches from NYC’s 50-year-old bagel legend H&H Bagels, which opened an outpost at the train hall in December. Before the rise of the new transportation hub, Penn Station had started shutting down a range of food options below in the old basement space, including a Shake Shack, at least two Starbucks, and a Godiva chocolate boutique. New York Gov. Kathy Hochul has previously announced plans late year about plans to expand renovations at the station, possibly spending up to $7 billion, to improve NYC’s infrastructure. Eventually, the transit center is slated to include a full market and food hall, plus “three signature restaurants showcasing the best cuisine in NYC,” according to information on Moynihan Train Hall’s website." - Erika Adams

Traveling Through New York’s Penn Station Just Got a Lot More Glamorous

"The Daniel Patrick Moynihan Train Hall, a huge new addition to New York Penn Station with sweeping ceilings, slick marble floors, and old-school touches like arched windows, officially opened on New Year's Day after more than two decades of planning and construction."

A beautifully designed architectural masterpiece that enhances the travel experience! The hall is spacious, modern, and well-organized, with high ceilings and stunning interiors. Inside, you’ll find everything you need—restaurants, shops, and comfortable seating areas. It’s a great improvement from the old Penn Station and makes traveling much more enjoyable. Definitely worth a visit, even if you’re not catching a train!

Beautiful and clean! Easy to get to by subway. Staff was very helpful here and from my departure city Cleveland. Also we had time before our train departed so we were able to store our bags at baggage claims. The staff there was very kind and helpful!

Newly renovated, clean, and spacious, Moynihan Train Hall is a huge upgrade from the old Penn Station. It has plenty of great food spots, perfect if you arrive early—especially since train tracks aren’t assigned until about 15 minutes before departure. Modern, efficient, and a great place to wait for your train! **Pro tip: you must arrive 1 hour in advance to check bags 💼

Very pretty and amazing if you like a glass roof but one small point for the architect: this is a train station transporting human beings to a variety of destinations from a variety of destinations. Some seating in the main hall is clearly required as I can see 40 plus persons sitting on the floor while the ticketed passenger seats are at capacity. 🤦🏼‍♂️as others have mentioned, traffic flow is idiotic. There are also large lines for restrooms as there is simply not enough stalls for the footfall. This means that if a passenger, as I saw, has a dog who has had a diarrhetic experience in their travel stroller there isn't anywhere for him to tend to it except the sink. A wonderfully pleasant station to arrive in and leave at once but less pleasant for departures with a short wait.

This is a flat, stripped down mimicry of what a great train hall once was. Hard cornered columns with no ornamentation, blaring cool LED lighting, armed military men, and signs that do not display the track number, leave one feeling that they have entered a budget film dystopia. Bonus - now with no seats! You would think all the billboard revenue would allow the station to hire attendants, but alas, no human, app, sign, or phone call will tell you which track you train will land on. You just rely on the kindness of strangers who have navigated this hellscapd before you. See photos for the original train hall with its pink marble. I even miss the underground Penn Station, once MSG landed on top of it because at least there was legible signage.

The definitive sitting on the hard floor experience. Despite the shiny facade Moynihan offers an experience far below the standards of comfort and dignity afforded at LaGuardia and other Amtrak stations in New York. A truly dissapointing experience where guests and their family meeting them or seeing them off get suffer while they await their Amtrak getting assigned a track because there is such miniscule amount of seating and it is always full, across the 6-8 times I've departed from or arrived back to Moynihan hall. Rather than letting guests sit in comfort we all get a severely subpar experience. Truly dissapointing given how much I prefer Amtrak to flying.

What a wonderful experience! Every single staff member, ticketing person, attendant was friendly and pleasant and helpful! Kudos to the staff... and whatever benefits the administration is supporting to make staff so positive and helpful, keep it up! The porter even stopped to ask where I was going and direct me. The ticket clerk outside the ticketing station was friendly and helpful, the attendant behind the counter seamlessly helped me change my ticket to an earlier time! Everyone reminded us that children get to go to the front of the boarding line, so we didn't have to wait on a long line. What an excellent travel experience. Minor issue was crumbs all over the seat in the waiting area... but that speaks more to the customer being sloppiest. The seats and storage in the train were spacious and comfortable. Train was on time too. A much improved experience compared to years ago. Thank you.

My two sons love trains, so we took AMTRAK from New York to Penn Station and returned to New Jersey. The fare was very variable, but my one-way ticket was $16. The station is not American-style but Asian-style, and very clean. Unlike other American MRT or subway trains, AMTRAK trains are also immaculate, much like Asian trains.
