18 Best Greenville, South Carolina, Restaurants | Eater Carolinas

"Chef Carlos Baez has bolstered the seafood-driven menu at Mr. Crisp. His resume includes working with chefs Josh Thompson and Hugh Acheson in Atlanta. His technical acuity is visible on the plate. Yes, there’s fried fish, including a whole black bass, traditional fish and chips, and an ideally crispy cod sandwich, but plates like a forbidden black rice salad with daikon and chermoula show a side of the Historic Overbrook kitchen that felt absent in past iterations. A snapper ceviche, served with plantain chips, is a nod to Baez’s Puerto Rican heritage. There are also notable desserts, like a vegan chocolate budino by pastry chef Kendall Baez. The addition of Laura Etta at the bar is an added cocktail perk to an already accomplished team." - Stephanie Burnette

Delicious! Everything was super high quality and tasty. Ok value. Smaller portions which meant we got to try several courses but I did wish there was a touch more food in each course. And/ or don’t go super hungry lol. The ceviche was inventive and while it was not very traditional, it was absolutely phenomenal and tasty. Would eat a mountain of it. Loved the oyster selection, wish there was a price cut for 6 or 12.

The oysters here are top notch in quality. Taste is subjective but of the 7 I've tried two of them were excellent, 3 were fine. And two were not it. The appetizer, specifically the trout, was disappointing. Not very flavorful or distinct at all. The dessert was very chocolate forward. The texture was amazing but the flavor profile was tepid. The bluefin tuna toro tartare was spectacular. The service was spectacular. Most of the recommendations, at least from our server of his favorite dish, were on point. The interior was great for dates or just hangouts in general. They open it up when the whether is good so you get the fresh air. The whole place is clean. I'd recommend getting a reservation but the walk-in took like 15 minutes for us and the tables and location is super clean.

Google
Our server was excellent and gave us excellent recommendations from the menu. He was super helpful with explaining the menu items and recommending what to try. For Drinks: Heffe Weizen Craft Beer and Crisp 75. Appetizer: Smoked Fish spread with Smoked White Fish, Old Bay Saltines, Bread & Butter Pickle. Hush Puppies with Chili & Dulse Honey Butter. Entrees: Fish & Chips was Hand Battered Icelandic Cod, Chipperbec Fries, Malt Vinegar Aioli, with Smashed Pea, and Tamaki Gold Risotto with Uni Butter, Bradford Collard, Lion's Mane Mushroom, Green Bean, Nori, Salmon Roe. Desssert was similar to beignets with chocolate sauce for dipping. If you have not tried this place, you need to. Let’s eat!! We did and went back again. The food was just as good as the first time.

First off, David, our server, was spectacular and gave the 6 of us excellent recommendations. Then came the na drinks for Dry January. They were so delicious, the Winters Kiss and Lavender Lemonade were must have. We each tasted each other's entrees and everything we ordered was seriously top notch. We will be going back again.

We've been to Mr. Crisp 3 times in the last few months. Probably our favorite restaurant in Greenville right now! The food is truly incredible. The menu changes frequently with lots of creativity, and the cocktail menu is next level. It was Lobster Week when we went last time and we tried several of the lobster dishes. They were all delicious, but the ceviche and the mac and cheese were unforgettable (see the pictures). I got a burger from their "Burger Night" the first time we went and it was seriously the best burger I've ever had. Sunday brunch is also a must! (And don't skip the pastries / desserts...sticky toffee pudding anyone?!) The front-of-house manager Luke and our server David were great, both very knowledgeable about the menu and took good care of us. So go check it out! Especially if you like seafood.

Kendall served Ashleigh and me (Cat) last night 12/18/24 was super helpful with explaining the menu items and recommending what to try. She seemed very knowledgeable about the food and excited for us to try the lump crab cake which was all crab and super delicious. The wagyu tartare was absolutely amazing as well and so was the smoked fish spread! All the food sucker tasty. I have not had oysters in so long and most of the it was incredibly excellent. Ashleigh and I definitely would come back soon!

Google
Food is different from other seafood restaurants in a tasty, healthy and delicious way. We had the opportunity to be part of the collaboration wine dinner with Chef Carlos Baez and Chef Josh Hopkins and it was a wonderful experience. The best Italian cuisine we ever had, was seafood inspired and delicious. Dishes well seasoned, balanced and with great wine pairing. The service was excellent.

Google
This place is AWESOME! We LOVED the lobster roll (we got warm but they have hot & cold versions), as well as the fish & chips and fish dip. My bf also thought the oysters were great. The menu isn’t huge but you can tell they make every dish earn its keep. We will definitely be back. Our server Zack was fantastic!

Yelp
Great Food, Great Service, Great Cocktails! I recently went to Mr. Crisp for brunch with friends, and it was fantastic! Our server, Luke, was THE BEST--attentive, friendly, and even challenged me to step out of my comfort zone with a cocktail choice. I'm so glad I did because it was amazing! As a vegetarian, I was thrilled to see the chicken-fried cauliflower biscuit on the menu. I used to love getting it at Anchorage (Mr. Crisp's sister restaurant), and it was just as delicious as I remembered. It's always exciting to find creative and flavorful vegetarian options! Brunch at Mr. Crisp wasn't initially on my radar, but after this visit, I'll definitely be back. Highly recommend!

Yelp

Yelp
A lovely evening at Mr Crisp with collaboration with Chef Baez & Chef Daniel Lopez. Each course, of the 5 course meal , were delicious & paired with amazing wines!

Yelp
The menu is interesting and the food was good. Service was very slow. We were greeted pleasantly and seated. Our table was watered and server came and introduced herself. We have our cocktail order and it was 15 minutes before it wad served. Appetizer came shortly but second course and entree were 25 minutes wait time for each one. Reservations should be staggered so that you don't put the kitchen in the weeds. That is the reason for reservations.

Yelp
Excellent oyster service. Ice cold and wide variety. Excellent services. Great brunch spot on Sunday afternoon.

Yelp
The food and atmosphere is good and fun. The parking lot can be a challenge but I was lucky enough to find a spot. The oysters and shrimp appetizers were good. I really liked the cocktail sauce. I ordered the fish sandwich and chips. I wish there were better options to get besides chips. I would definitely come back and be open to trying something else.

Yelp
Our server was amazing but the food was super bland. Would recommend for ambiance and drinks only.

Yelp
My friend and I stopped in here after an aerial yoga class next door. I'd been here before and was hungry for their lobster roll (like a po' boy), but it wasn't on the menu (a shrimp roll was instead). Reluctantly I ordered the fish and chips (which I'm sure would have been great), but a few minutes later our server made my day by stopping by to tell us they could make me a lobster roll after all. He had noticed that I was really bummed and asked the kitchen if they could make an exception. I savored that fabulous lobster roll down to the last yummy bite. Thank you guys so much! We always have a wonderful time at Mr Crisp - the waitstaff is friendly, the drinks are amazing and the food is divine - it's definitely not all fried stuff, as you might guess from the name. I'm just so glad I got a lobster roll all to myself this time and didn't have to share with my kids :-).

Yelp
This is our #1 spot for oysters and a cocktail! With all the options available in Greenville, it's tough to find a spot that delivers every time and Mr. Crisp always for us!

Yelp
Good food and high prices in a setting with all the ambiance of a hospital cafeteria. Worst of all, NO ICED TEA. This is the South, put tea on your menu.

Yelp
Finally made it to Mr. Crisp. If you love fried food this is your place. The food was good, but service not so much. I was about halfway dinner with my dinner and took a break to respond to a txt. My server picked up my plate and silverware.i stopped her and she apologized. Once done I waited about 20 minutes for her to return. I ended up asking the manager jokingly if she still worked here. He told me she want home.....

Laura T.

Yelp
We just left an amazing brunch at Mr. Crisp. Service and food was top notch. We had the fish and chips, and breakfast hash with bacon. For drinks we had a great Bloody Mary, Easy Like Sunday Morning (gin and cucumber), and some unique local craft beers. We will be coming back very soon for another visit!

Yelp
I really enjoyed our kind and friendly service from the moment we walked in. I had some oysters at the recommendedation of the server. They were very good. I had fish and chips which were also wonderfully prepared. I do feel like the price point for the food was a little high but it was a great experience and I would go again.

Yelp
My husband made a reservation here out of the blue. I had seen it before under Resy, but had not made a reservation. I'm so glad we did. It was excellent food great quality and a very attentive staff.

Yelp
I love this place. Doesn't hurt that it's in my old childhood neighborhood either! Chef Greg McPhee (of Anchorage fame) has started this second restaurant as a more casual, seafood-based approach, and it's wonderful. Even on the second opening night, excellent and friendly service, vibrant atmosphere, and a real buzz about the place. In the best possible way, I was surprised again that I was still in Greenville. Excellent quality oysters and shrimp, plus some top shelf guidance of the bar (Lions Mane is ). A hugely welcome addition to the Greenville resistant scene.

Yelp
Amazing Spanish Octopus and cocktails!! Service is great!! Ask for Tyler!! Cheers and hope to see you here!! I'm definitely coming back.

Amy R.

Yelp
The BEST OYSTERS! And the mignonette is delish--fish and chips awesome, lobster rolls superb--not to mention a friendly staff and a dirty martini that will keep you coming back. Bravo!

Taylor S.

Yelp
One word. DAVID. Our server David was LITERALLY the best server we've ever had and we'd come back just for him. He made our night absolutely exquisite. From in-depth descriptions of menu items, to anticipating every possible need, we can't say enough good things about how he truly made the night incredible. Food was top notch. Vietnamese Veggie salad was bright, fresh and herbal, and David's menu recommendations did NOT disappoint. Great variety of options for exotic and picky eaters, and DON'T miss out on the Sticky Toffee Pudding. Nutty, salty, browned butter caramel enrobed a tender cake topped with homemade ice cream. Ambience and decor were divine as well. Mr.Crisp was a delight!

Yelp
Mr. Crisp in Overbrook. WOW, what a shocker!!! We expected a bunch of fried seafood but, man oh man, were we wrong. Started with amazing broiled oysters & then had the soft shell crab & cabbage salad for entrees. The cabbage salad is HUGE & enough for 2 people to share, FYI. We will definitely be back. Oh, and the service was outstanding!!!

Chase O.

Yelp
service was amazing and so was everything else about this place. definitely try the old fashion in the morning if you're a bourbon person.

Yelp
Food was really good and nice sized portions, just a bit on the pricey side. Cute place and great atmosphere though.

Sarah S.

Yelp
The food was amazing. The cocktails were out of this world. But let me tell you about Tyler. He ran out of the restaurant to bring my phone to the car which I left on the table... because the cocktails... Also shout out to Luke who remembers patrons' names and made us feel at home. Justin - your cocktails made our night!

Carol B.

Yelp
When I called to make a reservation I had to leave a credit card number. I was told if we didn't "show up" I would be charged $10.00 for each party in the reservation. I should have told the person on the phone no thanks. The menu was extremely limited. One in our party asked for coffee. They did not have any as they were waiting for a part for the coffee machine. There was dessert on the menu so they should have had coffee and tea. Buy a Keurig or Cuisinart until you receive the part. The food was ok but a little pricey. I don't think I will be rushing back.

Yelp
So delicious, always spot on with seasonings, drinks were phenomenal, hush puppies...no words! So delicious! A must go to for Greenville!

Yelp
Cute new restaurant! The raw bar platter was pretty great and definitely plenty of food. There was 2 of us, we split the raw bar platter and a sandwich and it was more than enough food! The only thing I didn't love was the ceviche, it needed a touch more acid/lime and some salt for me! But it was good with some of the vinegar that came with the oysters! Would definitely return!

John A.

Yelp
Fish and chips was delicious but skimpy on the fish. Went home Hungary. Music was too loud. Waitress had to keep repeating because we couldn't hear her. Won't go back.

Marie M.

Yelp
The fish and chips were the best. Visiting from Seattle where we have fish and chips galore. This one was a winner!

R D.

Yelp
My husband and I were so excited about trying this new place. Our waitress took awhile to come to our table, she did not walk us thru the menu or even ask if we had been here before. We ordered 3 appetizers, the tuna tostada, the kampachi crudo and the smoked fish spread. We were disappointed with all 3 and were over all underwhelmed. For each dish, the accompaniments outshined the fish. For the tuna tostada, all we could taste was the pear. For the crudo, all we could taste was the grapefruit. For the smoked fish dip, the mayo (or whatever it was) was overwhelming and we couldn't taste the fish or the smokiness the fish should of had. My cocktail, An Open Door Vol 2, was really good. It was the highlight of our dishes. We decided to avoid any main dishes because of the disappointment of our appetizers.

Jon S.

Yelp
One of our absolute favorite places. Great casual atmosphere, incredible food, and great service. It's also surprisingly kid friendly, and we've taken our 2&5 year olds several times. They have a kids menu and crayons, so it's one of the very very rare places we can go that keeps the kids happy but also something mom and dad love. By far the best seafood in Greenville, and with the frequently changing menu there's always something new.

Jack B.

Yelp
Great addition to the Greenville dining scene. Bar and table seating. Everyone is helpful and servers are knowledgeable about the menu items. Seafood focused, limited menu: shellfish: shrimp, oysters, mussels, and extra crispy fish (cod) and chips as a specialty. Sandwiches available. Chicken selections and lamb sandwich for non seafood diners. Nice wine selections. A bright, energetic ambiance with staff eager to please. Tried the fish and chips: did I say crispy fish? Very much so. Overall, a satisfying experience and look forward to a return.

Henry S.

Yelp
Excellent seafood, creative menu items that don't disappoint. I really love the ceviche and oysters are top notch, you can't go wrong with Mr. Crisp!

Jeanne P.

Yelp
Great fish and chips--cooked perfectly, crisp on the outside but cooked just right inside. Everything we ordered was terrific. Delicious cocktails, friendly service, and generally a nice, chill vibe.

Connor R.

Yelp
Food tasted amazing and our server Luke was awesome and attentive! Fairly priced menu with high quality options. Hushpuppies and Shrimp are two awesome appetizers! Already planning our next visit.

Peggy R.

Yelp
very skimpy on food wine and customer service. don't waste your money

Katherine S.

Yelp
As we approached Mr.Crisp restaurant, the smell of rotten seafood permeated the outside of the restaurant. Luckily, the smell inside the restaurant was fine. I understand that the owner/chef is the same as the Anchorage restaurant. If your expecting the same quality of food as Anchorage, you'll be disappointed with Mr. Crisp. The food was hit or miss! The service was very good! As in the case of Anchorage, the decor was on the cheap. Parking was limited. We visited on a Wednesday night and I would say that the restaurant was at 75% capacity. My party and I had found the restaurant to be very loud due to the open concept. My group of 4 was practically yelling to one another just to be heard. I couldn't wait to get out of there! In regards to the food, overall, it's average at best due to the price point and execution of the dishes. I think with a few menu changes and some sound insulation, Mr. Crisp has a lot potential. Unfortunately, I do not predict the changes occurring because it's been my experience that excellent chefs are poor managers and they do not have the time, conceptual fortitude or means it takes to properly open a restaurant. The restaurant business is tough and excellent chefs need to be in the kitchen and stay in the kitchen doing what they do best!
