Google
We came form SC and happened upon this gem while in DC. The food was delicious. Atmosphere super cozy. The wait staff was top notch. Friendly, knew their stuff and even suggested some places around town. All the staff have been there 10+ years which says volume about the way a restaurant treats their employees. If you’re in the area definitely come check it out. I suggest the chicken buffalo dip or burgers. Delicious!

Google
The food is amazing! I must say for my first time eating here that was the best patty melt and home cut potatoes everything was good the coleslaw was amazing as well! The staff is very friendly customer service was definitely giving and on point I highly recommend Mr Henry’s restaurant and will be back for more🤗❤️😘💯

Google
This is a great local bar and mecca for new jazz and music talent. Roberta Flack was a regular performer. The food and drinks fit into the breezy and friendly atmosphere.

Google
A true gem of Capitol Hill. Mr. Henry's is such an iconic place in DC history. And on top of that, it's got great burgers. We come here pretty often and love the patio. A tad on the pricey side for the food you get, but the vibe totally makes up for it.

Google
We went to see "Drag through the Decades " for brunch to celebrate 50 years of Pride in DC (it's a long way from P Street beach now) and to say goodbye to a DC legend. The drinks at Mr. Henry's are pretty good and so are the shows. The food is okay as far as bar food goes. But enough can not be said about the people who work there, the atmosphere, and the history of the place. It's a great time!

On Thursday March 20th around 1:10ish, I was really looking for a meal that was good and a reastraunt I’ve never had before. I was in a rush because I was on a tight schedule because I was on a Close Up Trip To Dc. I had an absolute amazing experience when I went to this restaurant. Definitely recommend the non alcoholic drinks: Apple Ginger Fizz and the Mock Mule! And definitely recommend the over the top burger super juicy and great! The food was absolutely amazing and delicious! The atmosphere was great and I loved the restaurant! I give great gratitude and I give a shout out to my Bartender/Server Chris. He was so helpful and kind and just a good guy to be served from! I also give great gratitude and I give a shout out to my server Serria. She made sure I was getting my stuff on time and helped me out and was kind and nice and a good person to be served by as well. If I could give this place a star rating of 10 I would! Definitely recommend this again 10/10! Thanks for everything and making my experience great Chris + Serria!

Google
As my first dining experience here, it was exceptional. We were lucky enough to come out on a Thursday and loved their nightly options, besides the entrees, Thursday is London Broil night. Every detail was taken care of, with sour cream for the baked potatoes and butter for the dinner roll, including a gravy to dip and savor with. Every server was there to please and loved that ours came by to check on us in case we needed anything else further into the meal. The decor takes you away to a cozy supper club atmosphere, and was so happy to learn that live music has returned. If you are looking for intimate dining with friends or loved ones, delicious and plentiful food options, Mr. Henry's is the place to be.

Google
Our host in Washington recommended this place, so we decided to check it out. The atmosphere is awesome, feels like an old pub. The food was ok, our hamburgers tasted ok...but you could tell it was a frozen patty. Our server was lacking, we clearly could see him chitchatting with a patron and clearly neglecting customers. He didn't even get our order correct because he was busy with that guy... In his phone etc. Finally I just got up to pay the tab and leave. The art and deco in this place is awesome with very unique items. Very LGBTQ friendly. 🍻

Yelp
Sad to say, I never came to this historic venue when I lived in the neighborhood in the late 1970's and it took until last night for use to come, hoping to hear the Bob Schwartz Quartet. Nice intimate venue upstairs to hear jazz, and the Quartet was in fine form, interesting program focused on blues singer and songwriter Percy Mayfield. We had already eaten dinner, but the beer and wine list were fine, then I had chocolate cake for dessert. My wife had the house-made chips which she felt were the best potato chips she had ever had. We sat with a jazz vocalist friend who liked her salmon dinner. Good experience -- we will be back.

Yelp
Yesterday, I met up with a friend from out of town here. I had never been, but needless to say I've stumbled upon another pub to put on my list of places to grab a drink in the district. The atmosphere is very warm and cozy and intimate. I don't know if they have an expansion, but the bar I sat at is pretty small and there are *some* tables, but I'd argue the seating might be limited during peak season / hours. We didn't order any of the cocktails as we kept mostly to basic girl orders (tequila soda), but I saw a couple of them getting made and they looked really good -- especially their moscow mule. After a while, we decided to order food instead of going somewhere else. I got the pulled pork and my friend got the classic burger with everything on it; we also shared an order of half fries / half rings. I will start by saying this place is definitely on the lower end of DC prices, but still expect to spend at least $15 on a sandwich. That said, the pulled pork was flavorful, juicy, plentiful, and I did not feel cheated. My friend's burger also looked VERY yummy: it was a thicker patty, so if you prefer smashburgers this might not be your vibe. The fries and rings we had were good, but the standout were the fries -- they were a handcut, thicker wedge style that was crispy yet super fluffy on the interior. These are a must order. It's worth noting that this place is an LGBTQ+ establishment and apparently a mainstay in the queer community and local music scene -- the bartender told us about how Roberta Flack got her start there! I'm not normally in Capitol Hill, but now I got a place if I'm in that borough. Had a great time.

Yelp
Awesome amazing jazz . We had such great service . I was super surprised that this did not come up when I typed in jazz in the search . Great professional musician's playing there hearts out.

Yelp
I liked the decor and feel of this old bar. I liked the old bay seasoned wings. The burgers were only okay. Not a big fan of what felt like frozen patties and store bought slaw.

Anna D.

Yelp
Wings were ok. Not super great but flavorful. There was not enough sauces. And the fries were not memorable.
google avatar

Yelp
For me, the ambiance had a definite and rich sense of history here, that I appreciated. On the other hand, other people in our party thought the space was grungy and in need of a refresh. We arrived before Happy Hour ended at 7 PM, and ordered burgers, fries, and Long Island iced teas. The servers and patrons were friendly and exuberant. The food arrived hot, the fries were plentiful and crispy, and the drinks were strong. The other folks arrived after 7, ordered wine and fish dinners, and were not happy with the food quality or the price. In short, keep it simple, utilize Happy Hour, and you'll be satisfied with this restaurant. With a few conditions, I recommend and rate Mr. Henry a 3.5

Yelp
Excellent place with great food and innovative musicians - before you depart DC, please make stop @ Mr. Henry's!

Edward K.

Yelp
Terrible! Food tasted like it was spoiled or really off. Server also was not good. I would definitely normal go back.
google avatar

Julie W.

Yelp
Not sure why the reviews aren't as good? It's a great casual place if that's all you want. Sometimes you don't need a super fancy expensive restaurant! It's nice to grab a $20 meal on a Monday and head home. Great service, and the food wasn't shabby either. I'd go back!
google avatar

Elaine G.

Yelp
I would come for the vibe and happy hour and pass on the fish and chips. The ambiance felt safe and friendly.
google avatar

Shari D.

Yelp
We've come here quite a few times and have her to be disappointed! The service is always swift and kind, everyone is so friendly and accommodating! We've come here during a late night, early morning, happy hour and even for brunch. Jazz is really something behind that bar, she brings am energy that is unmatched!! We will be back to check out some live jazz upstairs! If you're looking for tasty food and great service stop by Mr. Henry's!

Yelp
What a delightful little surprise. I ended up at Henry's when I showed up to Barrel a few doors down and it turned out that they were closed for a private event. Our group of 5 really lucked out w Henry's-- we had no problem getting a 6-top and they were serving the happy hour menu at the tables as well. The drinks were s t r o n g. I definitely didn't need that last Long Island ice tea. They seriously don't joke around. The food was also surprisingly good bar food! There could have been more buffalo chicken dip for the price, but that's really my only complaint. The popcorn shrimp was great, as were the sliders. Pretty much everything was eaten so no complaints there. And they really got me out a bind when the original venue fell through.

Yelp
Old school gay vibes from every nook and cranny of this place. Living for it! The food was solid, drinks were food, prices were good, staff were super sweet. The sides to the entree were problematic. The cole slaw was soggy, and, on top of that, tasted like the less desirable portion of the cabbage was used. And pre-portioned into a plastic throw-away container. I am not sure why soany places in DC do this, but I do not want my food in plastic containers unless it's to go. And they must have been running low on chips because there were only about 5-7 on my plate. I will definitely be back because the ambiance, solid entrees, nice staff, and great drinks carry this place. Come on and please finish strong with the details next time. XO

Tom M.

Yelp
Great Happy Hour! Our server, Nick was friendly and attentive to our needs. I would recommend this establishment.

Yelp
I've been twice and the first time was delicious. I got this blue cheese burger and the fries were amazing. I sat outside and it was already like 8pm but the staff was so friendly and actually recommended the burger. It was truly delightful. The second time I went for breakfast and it was disappointing. The staff was nice but the service was a little slow for 8am on a Saturday without really anyone else in the restaurant. I got an omelet and the portion sizes were shockingly very small. There were barely any hash browns on my plate or my partners which was frustrating considering the cost. The food was good, but pretty average. I like their space and vibe and even their history a lot and definitely will go back, but I would not recommend them for breakfast.

Jeffrey S.

Yelp
Food was trash. Charged 5% service fee on top of a forced 25% gratuity for a couple. Watched every other person look the same way at their bill.
google avatar

Terence P.

Yelp
I've been here several times and have found it to be a nice neighborhood spot for good food and drinks. The staff is friendly and the food has never been a disappointment to me. The service is prompt and they are attentive to the customers. I like the atmosphere as well. Saw a couple of performances there and had a great time!
google avatar

Gary R.

Yelp
Low key neighborhood tavern. Menu is solid. Saturday special was jambalaya. This was full of shrimp and sausage and had a nice bite. Service was friendly and prompt.
google avatar

Chris H.

Yelp
Food was good, service was very nice, but a little slow, ambience was great, old style decor

Teri M.

Yelp
Great food, friendly people and good service. Loved the small and intimate table at the window.
google avatar

Bonnie T.

Yelp
Ducked into this spot on a whim while it was pouring rain outside. Pleasantly surprised by our experience. The food and service were great and the ambiance has so much character. We got the chili to warm us up, fish and chips to fill us up, and good beer on draft for the heck of it. All of it was good. Highly recommend!
google avatar

Meghan H.

Yelp
Great service and the ambiance was amazing. Definitely check this place out for some reasonably priced food & delicious mimosas! Will be back for live music

Cori B.

Yelp
The most underrated bar in D.C. - filled with real jazz and history. Prices are reasonable, and the service is exceptional.
google avatar

Paul G.

Yelp
Love this local spot!! It embodies originality and a neighborhood feeling! I love there happy hour it always gets me from the LIT's to the margaritas. Don't forget to check out there food menu for HH. I've been here several times for dinner.. it never misses from the wings to the sandwich's of even they're chilli. The staff are really on their A game. Also if your interest they have many different nights of entertainment upstairs which mostly consist of jazz nights.. for you who like eating outside they have a large patio area! Definitely a go to spot.. check them out if you are in the area.

Peter L.

Yelp
Always a classic spot for jazz, particularly on Wednesdays. The bartenders care, and it's a fun place to be.
google avatar

Tiffany W.

Yelp
Went on a Friday night to hear some jazz. Jazz is upstairs and it sort of looks like you're going through the kitchen to get there. It's a very narrow space, crammed with tables and chairs, and a slightly raised stage at the front. There's a bar upstairs as well as a restroom. I enjoyed the music, although because of the size and shape of the space, not every seat is a good seat to see the whole band. Aaron Myers is a great entertainer as well as singer, so he kept the crowd engaged and enjoying the evening. I ordered dinner because the website said there was a $15 minimum per person (no one was checking from what I could tell). The size of the salmon blew me away and it was good, but could have used a tad more flavor (salt maybe). I was impressed that it came with veggies and a smaller portion of potatoes. It got me to eat zucchini, which I never do, so that's a win! I ordered an amaretto sour and a Magner cider. Both were delicious. I would recommend this spot and hope to return specifically for the live jazz.
google avatar

Alyssa S.

Yelp
Went here because we heard this was great place in town for live music. When you walk in you might think you are in the wrong place since the band is on the second floor and you can't really hear it from the 1st floor dinning room. You walk up a set of stairs in the back. I highly recommend arriving early. We went on a Wednesday and the only seat available was at the very front. Even the bar was full. Overall great place for a week night out. Music goes from 8-11. Hoping to come back soon to try the food and more drinks! You might wait just a little due to consideration of the musicians up front which is fully understandable. Besides time flies when you're listening to amazing music.
google avatar

Jay P.

Yelp
Monday night half priced burgers hit the spot. A few cocktails plus tator tot upgrade made the evening. Nice neighborhood vibe with attentive service. Sit in the window for great people watching too
google avatar

Mike R.

Yelp
Mr Henry's is fun. Fun, fun, fun. Staff even break into the occasional spontaneous dancing when they crank the music up to play some 70s or 80s jams. Chill li'l neighborhood spot that has been around FOREVER it seems. I remember they were open when I was in college. Great place for a quick drink or a bite to eat. Stiff drinks and nice bar fare = a winner. Parking on Capitol Hill can always be challenging so there's that to contend with. PS - there's a sign on the door requiring masks and Covid vaccination proof so be prepared upon entry.
google avatar

Naomi C.

Yelp
Hmmmm where to start. The Good (always start with the good): Excellent Eastetn market location right off of Pennsylvania Ave and 6th. Decent parking in the area and excellent socially distanced options for seating. They also take phone numbers and names for contact tracing and require masks, though they do make clear that it's because there's a fine. So... The service is good, attentive without being overbearing, familial and homey without being too familiar, and the coffee was piping hot and fresh and served in a MASSIVE mug! I enjoyed that coffee so much! I had the salmon scramble which was not as warm as it could be--I ordered as a party of one and asked the waiter to tell the kitchen to hold it as my cousin wanted to join me. I get the impression they fired it and kept it under the lights until she arrived and ordered. It came out literally five minutes before her food. The home fries were not great but they were seasoned okay. My cousin liked the biscuit with jelly. I was unimpressed. The meh: So the food wasn't amazing. The menu is SMALL SMALL. If it's that small, the food should be amazing, amirite?!? My cousin had the croissant sandwich. She said the egg and bacon was good but the croissant was -inexplicably-cold and it didn't taste that fresh... Also, the mimosas weren't mixed. All champagne on the top, all OJ on the bottom and 12 ice cubes in a tiny white wine glass. WHO PUTS ICE IN A MIMOSA?!? My second was straight champagne because...no. The bad: Nothing was "bad" but I can't say I'll be back. There are far better options in DC and eastern market.

Yelp
AMAZING!!!!!! I had an absolutely amazing time at Mr. Henry's. Great intimate venue to enjoy some live jazz and eat a low key dinner. My partner had the chili. And ordered me some fries. I had a salad and the old bay wings. My salad was delicious. I wish I would have just stuck with that. The wings left a little to be desired. But you don't come here for the food anyway. The jazz set was amazing. I'll definitely be back if I'm in the area.
google avatar

Jennifer G.

Yelp
My dog and I stopped at Mr Henry's yesterday and felt so welcomed! We ate out on the patio and our server was so kind! She brought my dog a treat and bowl of water. I was craving a cheeseburger and ordered the Cantina Burger with sweet potato tots. The burger was cooked exactly as I ordered and so juicy!! The tots were some of the best I have had and didn't taste like typical frozen tots. I had the slaw which was ok. I prefer mine sweeter but I think that's a southern thing. My server told me they have live music there and I definitely plan to check it out! I appreciate any business that supports the LGBT+ community and as you can see they proudly show support from the front window!

Yelp
An absolute gem! Old school vibe with jazz and awesome hospitality. Been a while since I've interacted with so many nice people in a restaurant. Our server kept our drinks refilled and the food was pretty good. I thought the leader of the jazz jam session did a good job of engaging with the audience and as first time jazz goers, we felt included. Can't wait to go back!
google avatar

Yelp
Lovely socially-distanced outdoor picnic table seating area on 6th Street SE, just south of Pennsylvania Avenue. Our waiter was very professional, polite, and responsive, the food came in a good amount of time, and we had a lovely meal of classic American eats at a reasonable price. The blue cheese burger was especially delicious -- I really recommend that one. Looking forward to our next visit!

S B.

Yelp
Nice old town ambiance with mediocre food. The seafood plate was $28 and not very good. Go for the music and drinks and you won't be disappointed.

Sylvia S.

Yelp
Lionel Lyles quartet deserves 4 stars. Food ok. Don't go hungry. Overholt rye, cranberry juice, very little used, taco salad with chicken greens fresh, 2 open tickets for band additional worth the money, chili not bad. Lots of beans, gr salmonnok, Malbec. On street parking horrible. Might revisit if band revisits.

Yelp
Mr. Henry's is a DC establishment! It has so much history, and continues to offer awesome events. You can feel and see all the history when you sit inside as it continues to have a 60s feel (which is when it was founded). Their outdoor seating is great for people (and dog) watching, but there can often be a lot of mosquitos. I was also happy to see that they have recently taken over the adjoining parking lot to offer more outdoor seating. Additionally, they have great daily specials, and service is delightful! They offer all the food classics - nothing too special but always good! My favorites are the pesto burger and grilled chicken sandwich. As for drinks, I like their peach bellini best! If you're looking for a place with fun vibes, good food, and somewhere you can feel good about supporting, this is your spot!
google avatar

Shelly T.

Yelp
I've been to this restaurant a couple of times in the past and the food is never a disappointment. I had the blue cheese hamburger with a side of sweet potato tots and it was hand down one of the best burgers that I have ever eaten. The service was awesome. The onion rings are a must have and I can Also recommend the quesadillas you won't be disappointed. If you're not vaccinated you have to sit outside and they do require that you show your vaccination card.
google avatar

Lauren M.

Yelp
We came for the jazz show upstairs and stayed for the incredible (and well priced) food and top rate service. Their popcorn shrimp was excellent and we will be returning for more and more jazz shows in the future!!!
google avatar

Stephanie C.

Yelp
If you want a bar bar, akin to a dive bar, this might qualify. It seems to be standing true to its 80s and 90s vibe. Nothing fancy here. But it is reliable and will be here hopefully for decades to come.
google avatar

Hazel D.

Yelp
I enjoyed what I had and my drink was good. I don't have anything to complain about it just wasn't anything spectacular.
google avatar

A E.

Yelp
We went here for the jazz night on Wednesday and immediately fell in love with it, most of all for the staff's hospitality and the lively vibe. The food was great and the drinks were formidable. We asked them to pack the rest of the food and they gave us a fresh portion to go! Amazing! Just try to arrive early for the jazz night, otherwise it gets really busy.
google avatar

Ravi N.

Yelp
Great place for music in the DC area for a moderate cover charge of $15-20. The music venue is a small space up a steep set of stairs accessed via the kitchen. Many tables are very close to the stage and the acoustics are good. Reasonably priced food served to your table while you listen to music. Drinks are reasonably priced as well, by DC standards. Super close to Eastern Market metro station. If you want to listen to Jazz in the DC area, this is a great spot to consider. COVID vaccine cards required as of November 2021. Masks only needed on way to table and everyone took masks off when seated. The Lionel Lyles Quartet was great (tenor, alto, and soprano sax!) with guest saxophonist Jordon Dixon on tenor in the second set.

Yelp
Full transparency: my only experience with the restaurant was ordering recently during quarantine. I really wanted to endorse this place. I like their daily FB posts and carry-out window. Unfortunately, I can't. They were late on the order, got the order wrong, and the food just wasn't very good. Ordered on a weekday, and got there at the scheduled pick-up time. Food was not ready. The person manning the window kept asking me "did you have X item?" and stating the wrong item. Finally, I thought he had it right. When we got home, however, we discovered they did not make one of the substitutions requested, and they gave us the ravioli with tomato sauce, rather than the pesto sauce we requested, which was significant because I can't eat tomato sauce. The turkey club itself was hefty, but the turkey meat was bland and rubbery. The burger was edible, but a little dry and far from special. You also only get a handful of chips or fries on the side with your order. Overall, a pretty disappointing result all-around.
google avatar

Sarah L.

Yelp
Food was good, as was service. Sat outside and got eaten alive by mosquitos, which was a mistake. Solid place, minus the rats running around in the parking lot.

Theresa L.

Yelp
Great place. I went to their Wednesday jam session. Straight ahead old school jazz and everyone was very friendly.
google avatar

Hunter B.

Yelp
This place is a cool vibe. We went for happy hour and on Tuesdays the margaritas are discounted until closing. The nachos were ok but the hummus plate was good. The margaritas were pretty water downed. It was not a terrible place and I would come back for when they do live music.

Tobias M.

Yelp
Waitress brought me the wrong burger. I had ordered Swiss and mushroom and she had made me just a regular cheddar burger. I said "No worries,, I'll eat it" and proceeded to. When my check came later SHE HAD NOT CHARGED ME FOR THE BURGER!!!!! THIS is what customer service is all about, and I've worked as a waiter now for about 30 years of my life. I APPRECIATE YOU WHOEVER YOU ARE AWESOME WAITRESS!!!!!!!! PS.. Burger was legit!

Karla C.

Yelp
Just moved to the neighborhood long term and this place made me feel so welcome. Really sweet servers. They brought water and treats for my dog too which was such a dope move. Love the people that work here and this spot! They treated us so kindly.

Joelle J.

Yelp
I have been going to Mr Henry's for decades having lived on Capitol Hill since the early 70's. It holds a special place in my heart for the ambiance, the people I've known & met there over the years & the staff that I knew in "the old days". The revival of jazz upstairs is a big plus. Unfortunately, the service I've received lately there has been sorely lacking. Many of the good servers are gone & have been replaced by folks who seem untrained & disinterested. I was there twice in a week recently & the service both times was awful: There seemed to be no one in charge on premises, servers talking amongst themselves not paying attention to waving customers at their tables, hot drinks served lukewarm & no offer to warm them up, request to get an item before the dinner entrees, ignored. Upstairs much ado about seeing ID's & vaccination cards before seating but a request to sit at a larger table denied even though the room was a third full. I hear the same from other regulars who are not going back. Wake up management!!
