"The bakery is known for its inventive pastries that draw long lines, like the cruffin, a croissant-muffin hybrid." - Ellen Fort

"There are a few things you can expect when you go to Mr. Holmes Bakehouse: A long line of people waiting for cruffins, the bakery inevitably running out of said cruffins, and people taking a lot of pictures inside next to the big neon sign. When you don’t get your cruffin and order other things from their pastry case, you’ll quickly forget what you originally came for because the filled donuts are outstanding and the other croissant varieties are super flaky and delicious. Don’t skip the chocolate chip cookie either - it’s unlike any you’ve had before and worth the line on it’s own." - Will Kamensky

Believe the hype this place is goooooood. I got there early around 10minutes before it opened on a Wednesday and there was already a line of 2 so I suggest getting there as early as possible to avoid the potential ques. I wanted to try everything but I settled for the Lexington croissant, raspberry and hibiscus and couldn't resist picking up a cornflake cookie for later :) Both the croissants had amazingly fantastic flaky pastry with flavourful but not overpowering fillings, the chocolate coating on the lexington added a nice crunch and different texture where as the creamy filling on the raspberry did the same job in a different way on the other. The cornflake cookie was amazingly sweet but with the nutty undertones was a great match, perfect with a coffee. A great bakery to try for sure.

Wanted to visit place so many times and finally made it here today! It is a tiny shop that has a trendy design. Very cute and modern. They got a good selection of both sweet and savory, and I opted for their sweet choices this time. Their apple cream donut was very good. Not overly sweet and the apple cream inside was fresh. Finishing it won’t make your tastebuds full of sugar, so I liked it. Got their matcha croissant but have yet tried. I fee that I will like it. The size was small, and I got both for $8.1. It is on the pricey side, so -1 star overall.

Favorite bakery in SF. A little bit of a sketchy area though. I went with my child and a lady on the walk up the street to the bakery literally tried to take her out of my husband’s arms. So be aware of the area and your surroundings while there. We go at 9:00am and get the pastries fresh including the famous Crufin. Everything we have tried here has been amazing.

Went to visit San Francisco to see relatives here all the way from Toronto. And this was my first stop!! We had to wait for almost 30 mins with the long line up. But totally worth it! Absolutely delicious. Please open a store in Toronto Canada!

Excellent pastries! The croissant was buttery yet fluffy. Both the savory and sweet tarts were interesting and delicious. Best to go in the earlier hours of the morning, between 8 to 10. By 11 most of it would be sold out.

We expected a long line, but there was only one person ahead of us. We peered into the display window only to find 4 chocolate cherry sticky buns and a small stack of cornflake cookies left. Mystery solved. We were far too late in getting a cruffin at 2:30pm, so we settled for the chocolate cherry sticky bun. The sticky bun did not disappoint. It was crispy on the outside and wonderfully flaky on the inside. The middle was filled with slightly tart cherries that paired well with the dark chocolate drizzle.

I’ve been waiting forever to come out to the city and ridiculously stand in line and now I finally got to try the Cruffin!!! The line for the cruffins doesn’t open until 9:00AM and we got there around 8:20AM on a Saturday morning. The actual open time for the rest of the bakery is 8:00AM. When we finally arrived to the front, we got our limit of 2 and then went to the registers to pay. The verdict? Worth the one time standing in line for 40 minutes to try it, but it wasn’t anything super impressive. The flavor of the day was a coffee caramel which was pretty good, but the cruffin itself was a sweet pastry covered in more sugar shaped like a muffin. It wasn’t anything that super impressed me and I don’t know why I wake up early and wait in line for these things. I also got some other pastries and I would have to pass on most of their croissants (matcha green tea croissant, bacon and onion croissant, spinach, mushroom and feta croissant, chocolate chip cookie dough croissant…). I had high expectations since this place is so popular, but the croissants were not as buttery and flaky as I had hoped. I also tried their donut which the flavor was unique (spiced pineapple), but the donut itself was just okay. The cookies on the other hand – OMG – I would come back for that. They are chewy on the inside and just a little crisp on the outside and had great flavors! Overall, I was a little disappointed to be honest, but I can finally check trying the cruffin off my list.

I've probably been here more times than I should. I just can't help myself. From the infamous cruffin, to their buttery croissants, to savory danishes, and cookies too. Oh and donuts that rotate as well. Everything here is satisfying and will keep you coming back for more....well at least that's what it does for me. So far my favorite things have been their almond stuffed cruffin (the cruffins change quarterly, so do the donuts.) I'm glad I live here because it's nice to stop in during the week. Even during the week the line can get long. At 9am is when they start serving cruffins and it's first come first serve. Once they run out, they run out. They don't make any more for the day, so get there around 8:40am if you plan on getting a cruffin. I can't even imagine what it's like on the weekends. The have the infamous "I got backed in San Francisco sign." Great photo op after you purchase your goods. Back to the baked goodness, I love the ham and cheese croissant ($5) , the strawberry jalapeño bear claw -runs about $4.5, and their savory bread pudding ($4). Definitely worth a try if you are visiting. Staff are friendly and the line goes by quickly. Not really any seating inside, except a few stools by the window, so be prepared to stand in the street while you eat your delicious goodies.
