Detroit’s Best Steakhouses: Where to Eat Steaks in the Motor City | Eater Detroit

"Founders Paul and Peter Gogo started serving steaks in Roseville in 1968 and have been going strong ever since under the stewardship of Paul Gogo’s kids. Gather in Mr. Paul’s dimly lit, brick-walled dining room for options like tableside Chateaubriand for two and petite filet with lobster tail. Folks can customize their order with options like frog legs or crab meat with asparagus and bearnaise sauce. The classic Caesar is a great addition to the full steakhouse experience complete with an extra-large pepper grinder for table-side seasoning. Call ahead to make a reservation." - Danny Palumbo

Had a really good time at Paul's chop House very good service from start to finish very attentive to your needs got a table side Caesar salad I highly recommend it Even the dressing is made table side and very fresh and good it's got like a romantic ambience dimly lit in there bathrooms were very clean also has a nice bar My steak was a little overcooked but still good My wife got fish and it was absolutely amazing if you're ever in or around the Roseville area 12 Mile and groesbeck stop in and check them out! Also just as a side note I believe one of the owners was making our Caesar salad table side which is kind of cool Love that they're all involved!

I sat at the bar at around 5:30 pm, so the restaurant wasn't really busy. The bartender was attentive. Upon being seated, I was served some bread and sesame sticks with butter, I also ordered a Stella Artois. I ordered a Caesar salad and decided to get the twin pork chops. My Caesar dressing was made by one of the owners named Peter, right in front of me with fresh ingredients and immediately mixed with romaine lettuce. Peter was nice. The dressing was really good which of course made the salad good you have to get anchovies in it or it will not taste the same and I don't even eat anchovies. The pork chop was tender and cooked to Perfection however, it lacked flavor tremendously, it came with a side of garlic mash which was just okay it was pretty much just mashed potatoes with minced garlic and oil kind of deal on it. I will try this place again, but next time, I'll stick to my first choice and get a ribeye steak. Even though I wasn't completely impressed with my meal I still gave it four 🌟 , mostly because it was one of the best Caesar salads I've had in a while plus of the experience of the Caesar dressing being made in realtime. I hope that the next time I go back, the steak will be great and make me feel confident in my 4 🌟 decision. I'll update this upon my next visit.

Prime rib was amazing, French onion soup was on point, asparagus was really good, mash potatoes were really creamy and had good flavor. Dinner rolls were soft but would have been better warm. Initial waitress failed to tell us the daily specials. Had we known they had wagyu steak we would have tried that but that will be for next time. Atmosphere was great for a nice night out for dinner. Staff was attentive but not overbearing. Talked with one of the owners Peter some time and couldn't ask for a friendlier individual.

Google
Still got the old vibes ambiance. Bricks, dark and carpeted design. Food was good. Ribeye was cooked to perfection. Salmon was average. Nothing special about it for me. Should’ve listened to Erika who was serving us since she suggested to try the perch. Will come back to try it. The ceasar salad that they prepare for you at table side was good except for one thing. It was too salty for us. Maybe next time we will ask to lessen the salt or skip the anchovy. You can order one order of ceasar to share with 2 people so you don’t have to spend $30 for 2 ceasar salad. One is good enough for appetizer with the complimentary bread. Soups were good. We had clam chowder and French onion.

Google
Food and Service is always great! Came one last time before I left Michigan and didn’t disappoint. I usually get the aged ribeye and asparagus, with cocktails it’s about 100/person.

Love this place. Every time I travel to Warren Michigan, I always stop here for a steak and wine. Top quality in both. Mr Paul still walks around greeting customers. I've been coming here for 20 years.

Google
A perfect "Go to" spot for a delicious dinner!! We always have a pleasant experience here. We've been going for over 15 years. This time we brought the kids. We had lobster tail, Chateaubriand and table side Caesar salads. Delicious!

Google
My school’s senior SnowBall dance was canceled so my family recommended Mr. Paul’s. It also gave us the chance to wear our formal outfits! The photos online look absolutely stunning but it does no justice to the true experience! As soon as we were seated, we were greeted with a very welcoming staff. Even during the busy moments in the night, they were VERY attentive, accommodating, and welcoming. We enjoyed the Caesar salad for 2, filet mignons, and a slice of cake! Additionally, we had the chance to meet Mr. Paul and the kitchen staff too! They even made us a fun little sign for our table! DELICIOUS food, great people, great place!

Yelp
The food was outstanding if you enjoy the old fashioned Steak and Seafood Hours . Everyone at our table enjoyed their meal and my a 28 day aged Ribeye Steak was delicious and you could cut it with a fork . I can see why it has been there for over 50 years . In today's pricing it was very fair as 1 lb boneless Ribeye for 48.00 includes potato and soup or salad . Great service and ambiance . I never had a bad meal there

Yelp
We had dinner here for a special occasion and really liked the interior decorations. We were seated promptly and the waitstaff was friendly and attentive. We ordered a couple of drinks, Negroni's, and I don't know if it's because Mr. Paul's is a chop house or what but the bartender did not know the proper way of making this drink. We were rather disappointed in that. The food was excellent though. And the bottle of wine we got was great also. It's a bit pricey but as I said it was a special occasion and everyone was very friendly and we really enjoyed our dining experience. If the drinks were made correctly I would give it five stars but I'm knocking one off for that. No pictures because there are plenty of those out there. A classic, we'll established venue worthy of your patronage.

Yelp
Mr. Paul's offers quality food and a great atmosphere. The service is polite and sufficient. I tasted a decent portion of the menu, and I can honestly say everything was above average. Since Mr. Paul's is a "chophouse," I felt like ordering a steak was a must. The rib eye was good, but nothing to write home about. Although the lamb chops were enjoyable, I was disappointed with the portion size. When a restaurant has 3-4 dollar signs for its price range, I expect the best. Considering this, I couldn't give Mr. Paul's a 5 star rating. In saying that, it is still a respectable staple in the Metro Detroit area, and a must try for locals.

Yelp
So happy to find a great restaurant open later on a Tuesday after attending a funeral visitation. Amazing Italian wedding soup, salad and bread. All the old favorites....frog legs, liver & onions and a great ribeye! Our server was friendly & attentive. Owner/manager also very friendly and didn't feel rushed.

Yelp
We celebrated our anniversary tonight and Mr. Paul's did not disappoint. Chris made our Caesar and it was perfect. Oysters were so big! Thank you Mr. Paul!

Yelp
Mr. Paul's never disappoints. The food is always consistently delicious. If you haven't had their Caesar salad made at the table, it's a must! All of their food is incredibly fresh. The staff are very friendly and attentive. We love coming here for celebrations.

Yelp
This place is such a vibe! It is so cute and aesthetic on the inside. The food was spectacular, the live music was amazing. We went in on a Tuesday night and were able to be seated right away. The service was very quick. It wasn't over crowded; overall extremely enjoyable experience. I would definitely recommend!

Yelp
Had the Lamb Chops and everything was delicious. The French Onion soup was to die for as well as the Chops.

Yelp
Hands down the best place on the eastside to go for a nice meal. Their steaks and seafood is amazing. I recommend getting the table side Cesar salad. It's the best I've ever had and the dressing is phenomenal. I usually get the scallops, salmon, or you can't go wrong with any steaks on the menu. The French onion soup is amazing. Frog legs are always a hit too. The service is great. Mary is always our waitress and is wonderful. The vibe of the restaurant is very old school 80s fancy steakhouse. If you haven't been you need to check out this hidden gem that's Eastside's best steak and seafood house around.

Nancy H.

Yelp
Best steak I've ever had ! Why I waited so long to go there .... Service was on point .... It was packed for a Thursday night... which made it a little loud. I didn't mind the food and service made up for it. Hope to go back soon !

Yelp
Updates: Let me be clear, I should have added more to my initial review to provide more clarity on the rating. We had to request water multiple times before it arrived. Ordered a cocktail and it also took forever to be delivered and when it was it also was WRONG! Bread was delivered to the tables surrounding us but not to us even after requests were made. I did share my concerns about my order and the response was apathetic at best. So to the owners response to this review, you clearly don't get it. When someone spends the sum of money that is necessary to dine at your restaurant, mediocrity is simply not acceptable. You do not get a chance for an off day without refunding or compensating your customer for not getting what they paid for. The last line to the owner's response should tell you all you need to know. You might have been around 50 years, but certainly you may not be 50 years more with this lack of humility and failure to own mistakes or when you missed the mark.

Yelp
Lunch was busy and our meal was good. Not outstanding but no complaints. Started with escargot which was tasty and tender. Served in the old style aluminum divot dish and alongside some bread roll halves that had a really flavorful cheesy butter crust. Tossed salad with blue for me and ranch for my guest. Kind of dull salad with standard mix and should have asked for dressing on the side. It was a bit Heavy and wet. I ordered the regular cut filet MR and guest had prime rib, which was a very generous cut. Filet was cooked correctly and prime rib was ordered medium well and fully consumed by my cattle farming friend. I'll be back and not wait so long this time.

Mary L.

Yelp
The best meal we have had at a Michigan restaurant in a long time! Our new favorite!

Yelp
Always wonderful service. The service alone brings you back. Caesar Salad is made fresh at table side. Classic. If you haven't put this on you foodie bucket list your missing out.

Yelp
I recommend Mr. Paul's Chop house because for the pat 17 years this has been my go to meeting and date spot. They do not take reservations so make sure you anticipate on waiting well over a hour for peak times and holidays! This was probably my first choice for good high end dining for years! My recommendations are as follows,...

Karen F.

Yelp
I can't say enough about this place. For me, the food is exceptional. The service, well let me just say there are no slackers in that department. They used to have a piano player that would play anything you asked for. He was the nicest man. He did retire, now when I go I don't stay long enough to see who's playing. It's my all time favorite restaurant in Michigan.

Yelp
LOVE.LOVE. LOVE. This place is nothing but fantastic. The inside is so beautiful and relaxing. In this photo I posted, is the owner of the facility actually getting his hands dirty and making one of their famous salads. Peter is such a wonderful host and genuinely has a smile on his face working side by side his wait staff. I cant even begin to describe how delicious and delightful the food is. This is me and my partner's favorite place to dine in and we have made it our anniversary place because it certainly just gets better and better each time we go there. If there were more stars to give to a business regarding their food, service and ambiance...this is the one that deserves em ALL.

Yelp
The outside had me a bit nervous but once we entered everything was splendid. Friendly welcome. Prompt service. The table side preparation of the Caesar Salad was incredible and beyond scrumptious!! A bit disappointed in my walleye with crusted macadamia nuts as it wasn't as tasty as I had hoped.

Amber B.

Yelp
Best place for a romantic date night. Customer service is always TOP NOTCH! Family owned & the food is HANDS DOWN ALWAYS AMAZING! Everything on the menu is fresh & delicious. If you like a Cesar salad, please try the table side Cesar! You won't be disappointed.
google avatar

Yelp
Steaks and sides top notch. Decent wine selection. Staff fantastic. Decor pretty dated could use freshen up!

Yelp
Food is excellent. Classic old school steak house. Table side Caesar salads are on point. Great wi e list! The owners, the Gogos are such a wonderful family and one of them are usually always floating around there!

Barbara D.

Yelp
This place has gone downhill! The Caesar salad used to be fantastic. Now it's just bland. You can make better at home. Service is slooowww. Food was skimpy. Not a fan and won't return. I wanted to leave no stars but it made me leave one.
google avatar

Kim N.

Yelp
My husband and I have been here a couple of times and they have the most amazing atmosphere and delicious food. Everyone is so friendly and helpful. (Erica was our waitress and she was phenomenal). Also, Benjamin made our Ceaser salad and was great. We'll definitely be back.

Yelp
Always an amazing meal when dining at Paul's. I have been coming here for years and love all the staff members. Everyone is very friendly and you feel very comfortable from the moment you walk in. Table side Caesar salad is a must ... made to perfection!! You can't go wrong ordering any item off the menu. Around the holidays the dining room is decorated with beautiful lights. If you're looking for a restaurant to have a holiday party I would highly recommend making reservations here.
google avatar

Yelp
Frog legs are so awesome 10/10, clean, friendly staff. Will be returning. Food 10/10 Owners came to our table to check on us

Yelp
So my babe decides to bring me here for Mother's Day and it doesn't look like much from outside BUT OH MY! We walk in and are seated immediately. Definitely wasn't expecting that because it was packed for sure. Once we are seated, the attention we received was top notch. I know that I typically take photos but this place wasn't that type of establishment. For appetizers we decided to go with the calamari. It was DELICIOUS! Blew my mind! It was served with a lemon butter sauce that was so good. I've never had anything like it before. I was stunned at how good it was as I was very skeptical about the sauce. We ordered a bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon by Barnard Griffin which was a decent wine. It wasn't Sonoma or Napa Valley but it was still good. It had a 13.7% alcohol percentage. For our main courses I had the petite filet mignon with a baked potato. Michael had the T-bone steak with red skin potatoes. He had the side salad and I had the white New England clam chowder. MY GOD! My palate was not ready! When the clam chowder came out and I took the first bite I was taken aback. I've had clam chowder in multiple places including Boston MA and I haven't had anything in comparison. It was absolutely delicious and I believe that was an understatement. Michael enjoyed his salad but he really out I believe lol. Main dish arrived and I almost cried. No lie. It brought tears to my eyes how good the filet mignon was. It was cooked to PERFECTION! I like my steaks medium and I was just too excited to try this out and I was not disappointed. I wish I took photos because me just talking about it doesn't give it justice. Michael raved to everyone who came to our table about how it was the best Porterhouse steak he has every had and that speaks volumes coming from him. Needless to say Paul's is definitely worth your time and money. For all of this we managed to stay under $150 for our meal and that doesn't include tip. Lastly our waitress name was Dorothy and she was absolutely incredible! She made us laugh while also being very attentive and making sure our experience was above standard. Definitely recommend!!!

Yelp
What a grand lunch was had at this old school spot; now in its 50th year! We were seated immediately on this early mid-week afternoon. While the bar area filled with patrons, our patient server gave my companion and me time to luxuriate over our meals and beverages. The grilled swordfish was excellent, as were the house salad and steamed Broccoli sides. I finished with a hot, fresh cup of coffee and a shared slice of moist, double chocolate layer cake, cut in two so we each had our own piece. Wow!! Since Pandemic, so few restaurants are staffed and financially secure enough to open for lunch. What a treat to find Mr Paul's is among them!
google avatar

Yelp
I went here probably about a year ago for the first time and I enjoyed the food and the atmosphere there I definitely want to come back again soon

Yelp
Stopped by for lunch to check it out and was impressed. Service was top notch and food was excellent. Had the prime rib and it didn't disappoint. Definitely coming back for dinner sometime. Classic steakhouse vibe.

Yelp
We dined at Mr. Paul's Chophouse for the first time recently. I cannot wait to go back! The food was incredible, but I would say that the service was even better. Every person in there treated us like family. We were told they don't take reservations for two people. We showed up around 8 o'clock, and only had to wait about 15 minutes for a table. Not bad at all for a Saturday night... Pictured: Bottle of Malbec (I recommend this one!) Tableside Cesar (yes get it with anchovies- you won't even realize you're eating them, but it makes the dressing amazing) Pork chops Filet (ordered blue)- their steaks are served charbroiled, with a button mushroom and au jus. Different, and very good! Redskin potatoes I also ordered a French onion soup to go. Yum!

Stanthony A.

Yelp
The family vibe, the food, drinks, atmosphere, exceptional! I love how owners will come over and say hi and check on you, seated right away

Alicia F.

Yelp
Food and service was great! The table side Caesar salad was delicious. Had the filet and twice baked potato, would go back. A great date night place.
google avatar

Yelp
From the moment I walked in, I felt at home. This place was spectacular and made my birthday so special!! The ambiance is charming. The table side Caesar salad making was fun to watch. Everything we ordered was delicious. The filets were cooked to perfection. Pretty sure you could cut it with a fork!. The special baked potato was loaded with all the good stuff that makes your mouth water! Service was top notch. Never once felt like I needed anything or nor did I ever have to ask. The perfect night out compliments of Me Paul's Chop House!!!
google avatar

Jenna B.

Yelp
This was my first visit to Mr Paul's chop house and I love it! What a classic cozy place that served delicious food and played live music. This was amazing and the service was incredible. I definitely recommend the brie appetizer as well as the calamari and French onion soup! We had the chateaubriand for the entree and the meat was extremely flavorful and tender. Also, highly suggest the Duckhorn red wine.
google avatar

Dom M.

Yelp
High quality food! Best steakhouse on the Eastside. Good pricing too!! What to get, hmmm, let me get as an appetizer baked Brie cheese with some hot garlic toast. Then I'll have the Fettuccine with tenderloin tips and he'll have bone-in American waygu New York with golf shrimp added. For the sides he'll have a special baked potato no bacon and asparagus. Don't say I didn't help ya!!

Yelp
Old school east side restaurant, been coming here for 35years. Parents used bring me as a kid. Thought I'd drop in on the old haunt after a 25 year absence. Nothing has changed in a good way , still very dim and filled w/ nostalgia. Food and service are as good as always. I visited (3) times in the 2 weeks I was visiting my brother and friends. Kept reordering the tempura shrimp , with a Caesar salad, was excellent. Huge lightly fried prawns and had them broiled on my last visit. Cocktails and wines were excellent , had a bottle of duckhorn cab 4 last meal. Perfect bottle and a great year. Wonderful repasts ! Hard to go wrong for lunch or dinner.

Yelp
Old school throw back steakhouse. A one service, the table side Ceasar is a must! Unbelievable atmosphere
google avatar

Nicole W.

Yelp
I appreciate that Mr. Paul's has kept things original. Why fix something that isn't broken, right? We ordered the calamari to start and it was good. It would have been better if brought to the table hot and crispy, but it was only warm and slightly chewy. I can tell it would be very good fresh. The portion size and price were great. We will try it again and hope for hot and fresh. We also got the table side Caesar salad at $17.00 for a plate. I would have liked to see a bit more on the plate for $17.00. The table side prep is a nice touch. In the moment I thought it needed more lemon, garlic, or salt - anything to give it more of a pop, as it was quite subtle. We didn't see our waitress to ask for lemon, so I salted and peppered it a bit and it was more enjoyable. Despite saying all that, I've actually been craving it since we went!!! We also both got the dry aged ribeye. They were prepared as requested and these would probably be my go-to order. Very good! Both came with a potato option, so we got the garlic mashed and paid extra for the loaded potato. The loaded potato was awesome. Next time I would try something other than their garlic mashed. I would choose Mr. Paul's any day over the historic lumber baron's mansion turned restaurant with sub par prix fixe offerings and ridiculous prices.

Amanda P.

Yelp
Erica was the best server EVER!!! This is coming from someone who also works in service. She was very educated on the menu and restaurants history. She pointed us in the right direction for food and overall just went above and beyond. The food was all phenomenal especially for the price. we got the mahi mahi, porterhouse, perch, frog legs, calamari and more!

Yelp
We've been here on two separate occasions. The first time for Valentine's Day in 2018/19, we felt like they were trying to be extra special because it was Valentine's Day but it was almost to much like them putting the napkins on our laps for us?. My wife's food was fine but I ordered a port house steak. I eat steak at least once a week and it was probably the worst steak I've had. I asked for medium rare and it was well done, it had almost no flavor to it and when I asked the waitress for some steak sauce (I usually don't even use steak sauce) she gave me a blatantly dirty look. I hardly ate any of the steak and I didn't even want it to go. The second time I've been here was this year for my birthday with a good friend who has never been here but wanted to go. I told him about my previous experience which was years prior and we thought hopefully things had changed. Me and this friend have been to more steak houses and restaurants together than I can remember. After looking at the menu I was nervous to even order a steak but someone next to us ordered a French dip sandwich which I thought looked very good so I ordered that as well and so did my friend. Needless to say it looked much better than it tasted. The only good part of the sand which was the bread looked to be homemade, the meat itself was over cooked and tough. Everyone I've ever talked to about Mr Paul's always has such good things to say but I must've been very unlucky both times because I don't think I'll ever go back. Also they need an interior remodel badly.
google avatar

Jeremy K.

Yelp
What can I say other than AMAZING! Love this establishment and all those who work there. We go for most every special occasion, even if that occasion is Friday. The food? Top notch, I have never had a bad meal. The steak is always cooked to perfection and the cuts of beef are superb. If you prefer seafood, can't go wrong with the crab legs. The staff? Wonderful people who seem to genuinely care and want to provide for an enjoyable evening. Even if this is just to garner a bigger tip, that's what tipping is for, to reward professionalism and these folks are the best! If you haven't been, do yourself and your tastebuds a favor and give them a try!

Yelp
Mr. Paul's Chop House was fantastic. I was in Warren for a business trip and decided to check out this place as it was near my hotel. Indeed, I made a good choice. Everyone was very nice and kind. Food was for the most part was amazing. I got the caesar salad, French onion, escargot, and dry aged rib eye. Definitely, best caesar salad I've ever had which they personally make for you by the table. French onion also very good which I got because of a recommendation from waiter. Escargot was as you would expect at a nice restaurant. The steak good for the most part but was a bit unevenly cooked. Parts were perfect and the areas closer to middle were noticeably rarer. Another thing that was that the food came out a bit slow. I went on a normal weekday too which was surprising. 4.5/5

Yelp
Had dinner there last night, and it was a great experience. This place has never historically taken reservations, so we went early, to avoid any kind of lengthy wait. We Started with onion soup, which was good, but not great. We then ordered the Caesar salad for two, which is made table-side. It's a must, with the caution that you must like garlic! You should also note that, while side salads come with many entrées, if you opt for this it will be an additional $12. Our main course was the Chateaubriand, which is only made for two. It is 20 oz. of beef, accompanied by plentiful carrots, potatoes, broccoli, cauliflower, and tomato topped with cheese and mushroom. The dish is plated table-side, and the beef was very tender and done just as we ordered. We opted not to try to finish it, instead taking some home, in favor of having dessert. We split a slice of chocolate cake, which was excellent. The service was excellent. Our waitress was attentive and responsive to any request. The meal came out in a timely fashion, despite the fact that there wasn't an empty chair in the restaurant. Overall, a great experience!

Yelp
I went to Mr. Paul's upon reading many favorible reviews.I was, however, disapointed. I had a glass of merlot, the Henry IV dinner and a piece of strawberry cake for desert. My wife had a fish dinner. While my Henry IV meal looked good upon arrival, it was served lukewarm at best. The bussers were constantly watching every bite I took so they could remove my plate instantly. That make me uncomfortable. In short what should have been at least a 4 star experience only rates 3 stars in my book. P.S. dinner for two was $135 plus gratuity. Has the experience been better it would have been worth it.

Gena L.

Yelp
Great food! The owner is so very nice and welcoming. The ambiance was perfect. Perfect place to propose marriage

Yelp
There is just something about an old school steakhouse for me, they are awesome and Mr. Paul's is up there! From the moment of pulling in to hopping on my bike to leave all was good. We had to change reservations many times because of life and they were very accommodating, I think I spoke with Patrick and he was cool. Our waitress was great even though i forgot her name and it was not on the receipt. The food was awesome. The french onion soup was old school but not in a salty way like some old school onion soups are, this had a rich flavor to it and plenty of cheese. The bone in filet as prepared perfect and very flavorful.
google avatar

James T.

Yelp
Old school chophouse in the middle of an industrial strip. Out of place and time, and that's a good thing. Try the table side Caeser salad, it's excellent. Everything is great here, but it's for memorable occasions due to it being pricey but reasonable.

Charles B.

Yelp
Best prime rib in town. Good, attentive staff and great food. Came in around 6 on a Thursday with no reservation and even though the place was busy, no trouble getting a table. If you're still reading, you're probably interested. Just come here.
google avatar

Julie B.

Yelp
Service was just ok. I guess for Michigan standards this place is good. The prime rib was tough. The ribeye had been sawed in half- worst I ever seen. The sides were even subpar. The place is always busy- viva la mediocrity..

Yelp
Amazing steak and the salad is to die for! Waitress are great Easy to parking, prices are respectable.
