Listen, Nostrand is always brimming with Caribbean energy but on today (Sept. 2) with the West Indian Day Parade days away, the energy was uncontainable.
I slow wined (okay, actually not) into Mr. P's Ice Cream excited to see an array of flavors that pay ode to the stomping grounds of the people in and around the neighborhood. Behind the ice cream case was Mr. P's son, Dwayne, who was super friendly and engaging with customers.
The menu displayed traditional flavors such as chocolate, butter pecan, and coffee; Caribbean flavors included mauby, grape nut, soursop and sorrel ginger among others.
Went with my absolute favorite -- cookies n cream. I know it's safe, considering all of the speciality flavors available here. But I love it and I enjoyed it. However, I didn't leave without a speciality flavor. I sampled the sorrel ginger and knew I had to order a cup ($6.00) for the road. The spice of the ginger complimented the sweetness of the hibiscus perfectly.
Mr. P's Ice Cream is among several other Black businesses, which is nice to see. Begin your work day at Lips Cafe; then immerse yourself in culture at I AM CARIBBEING; grab vegan lunch or dinner at Aunts et Uncles; scarf down baked pastries from Immaculee Bakery; close your day with an ice cream pint from Mr. P's. Sounds like a good day to me!
