Mr. West Cafe Bar - Review - Madrona - Seattle - The Infatuation

"Mr. West has locations Downtown and at University Village, but the crowded chaos involved with a trip to either of those can be risky if you want some peace and quiet. Enter their Madrona outpost, which has the same coffee and chic atmosphere (hello, vertical seafoam subway tile) as the others—only it has clearly swallowed a massive chill pill. Plus, they have soft serve, which is great for grabbing to-go for a stroll down 34th Ave." - Aimee Rizzo

Best Restaurants, Bars, and Breweries Along the Burke-Gilman Trail | Eater Seattle

"A sister restaurant to the downtown location and Madrona’s Bottlehouse, this all-day café is easily accessible from the Burke-Gilman. There’s a little bit of everything on the menu, with drinks including coconut cream lattes and cardamom tonics, and snacks such as curried avocado toast and a tuna melt with gouda and Mama Lil’s peppers. Open for takeout, as well as limited onsite seating, including a patio." - Kelly Knickerbocker

The U Village’s New Mr. West Opens July 4 - Eater Seattle

"The University Village shopping mall is scoring the second location for downtown’s popular all-day cafe, Mr. West, which will open on July 4. The combination bar and cafe, from the owners of Madrona’s Bottlehouse wine bar, is setting up shop in the former home of the Mrs. Cook’s kitchen supplies store. Like the downtown location, owners Soni Davé-Schock and Henri Shock will encourage diners to bring a laptop and order an espresso, or share a bottle of wine and a charcuterie plate with friends. Other menu selections will include coffee cocktails, egg sandwiches, wine-based spirits, curried avocado toast, salads, and beer. The cafe is building several seating options, including a patio with a fireplace and plants aplenty. Inside, there will be bistro tables and a wine bar. If the ambience at the downtown location is any indication, this new outpost will serve as a charming, plant-filled respite from the busy shopping center." - Megan Hill

This location is okay! Mainly more coffee/drink focused and less food like the one in u village. Super aesthetically pleasing and you could study/work here. Came on Mother’s Day and we wanted a cold brew and hisbiscus tea which they both were sold out of pretty early in the day (11 am). Was no trouble as we ordered something else but was a bummer! The strawberry rhubarb coffee cake is delicious.

Late writing this review just had a busy week. Went in here Monday around 10:30 after finishing some other errands in the area. Loved my chai it was fantastic but as someone who also works in customer service, the barista I got could be better. There was no one inside so not busy at all. I came in said hello, no response back just a stare. I don’t mind that, still waking up-I get it. It was my first time in so I needed a second to browse the menu. After I said that, I could see the barista roll her eyes and heard a slight groan. I just ordered a plain iced chai so I could get out quickly. I said thank you on my way out to try to kill the awkwardness of her staring at me from a afar trying to get the lid on my drink, also to no response. The barista gave a vibe like I was naturally inconveniencing her by being there, and it was a very unwelcoming atmosphere. In my experience working customer service, I’ve always been told to leave your attitude at the door. I don’t expect loud peppiness or anything, but simply being kind and not visualizing your displeasure in a situation where the customer truly did nothing wrong, goes a long way.

Really good coffee and great food. The location is awesome!

I stopped by for an espresso and it was delish. It came with soda water that hit the spot. The staff were kind and responsive. Inside was quiet enough that I felt more comfortable making a phone call outside, where there is one table and a small seat.

Google
Mr. West has been consistently good across all the locations I’ve visited. I really love their coffee and cafe offerings. The marionberry biscuit was very good. Their Madrona location is much smaller than the University Village and Downtown locations, so keep in mind during busy times that seating is very limited at this one. The staff was friendly as well.

Got their seasonal special - an orange cardamom latte which was very well made and warming. The croissant egg sandwich was fine too. The ambiance was nice, bright interiors and lots of indoor potted plants. While taking a look at the pastry case, I saw a small bug (or possibly an ant?) crawling near one of the pastries, which was a little off-putting in trying one. And then as soon as our coffee and sandwich was brought to our table, there were these tiny fruit fly-like bugs flying around our plate for a couple minutes, before we swatted them away. Probably due to so many indoor plants? I hope they can do something about this issue.

Google
Coffee is solid and decor is real nice but man is the service here rough. I’m pretty easygoing but it seems like staff really just doesn’t want me there. Ive also asked about allergens for seasonal drinks a few times (girlfriend has some allergies), and have been told “I don’t know and there is no way for me to find out” every time except one, when I was given actively incorrect information. I know food service is a tough biz but this place manages it much worse than most.

Yelp
Cute coffee shop! Here you'll find lots of Madrona locals looking to drink coffee, work remotely and in true Seattleite fashion, not say a word to anyone else. But that's why we love it! Coffee was good, service was speedy and the vibes were cozy. I got their root beer + espresso drink - call me crazy, but it was actually so good. I'll be back!

Yelp
Excellent strong coffee (I had an oat latte). Decent seating (I counted eight 2-seat tables inside, and there are a couple more outside). Good music (LCD Soundsystem was in the mix). Busy but not overwhelmingly (I went Tuesday mid-morning).

Yelp
Glad we tried it despite the average reviews. The coffee special with orange something was delicious and hot and actually served in a mug. Yeah, since the pandemic I've had to specially request mugs!! The breakfast Sammy was also delicious, the egg cooked like a frittata and the croissant hot and spot on. I'd come back again! Friendly staff as well.

Yelp
First and last visit. Long wait (with no one else in line) while the server had her back to the counter, typing away on her phone. She was aware we were there, so I gave her the benefit of the doubt...maybe she was dealing with an emergency. However, when she finally could be bothered to take my order, it became clear that she just had zero customer service interest or skills. The latte was decent, but have had better.

Yelp
I absolutely love th8s place. Drinks are fab, good is delightful ~customer service is wonderful. Repeat customer

Yelp
Mixed up coffee order. Rather rude, stressed barista who is not in sync with the person taking orders. Cold croissant sandwich that is grossly overpriced for what you get. We had hoped this would be a neighborhood go-to, but it won't be.

Yelp
This place doesn't look like much from the outside (we almost missed it), but it is quite lovely inside! The menu is very inventive (there are egg creams and tonics in addition to coffee). The baristas were quite personable and knowledgeable about the menu. We decided on the cardamom tonic and got decaf (because it was after 2pm). The espresso floated on the tonic and looked incredible. And when mixed together, it was so refreshing!

Yelp
There's good coffee, there's plants and plant gear FOR SALE, and the baristas play punk. New favorite place!

Tang K.

Yelp
Staffs were all so kindly and respectful. The food and coffee are bad and relatively too expensive to its plain flavors and simple processes. Bathroom was very smelly and dirty with so many flies.

Yelp
I thought this was a good co-working space. The tables are individual circles though so if you like to chat with your friends or spread out your papers, it might be tough here. I got two savory pastries (I think one was a cheese danish), they were both delish. I got a cookie as well and it was harder than I wanted it to be.

Yelp
Thrilled to have this new spot in the neighborhood. I've read the other reviews grousing about the fact that they do not have a full menu. Hey, it is what it is. A small, lovely coffee shop with a delicious (albeit limited) pastry selection. Let's just celebrate that, shall we? Service is fast and friendly...pastries are dangerously delicious. Welcome to Downtown Madrona, Mr. West.

Yelp
Food and drinks are great but I visited today with the two little boys I nanny, saw flies buzzing in their pastry display case and found a hair baked into the croissant that I shared with the two year old boys :(

Yelp
Similar to other reviews I think the largest mr wests are better! Their website online is deceiving as it shows they offer a full menu of food, this location offers 3 food options and coffee and that's it. I thought they would have much more as their website shows that they do. This one also was very VERY small, like 5 tables that comfortably sit 1. Two people could not work on one table with two laptops very easily. It was very expensive (but not surprised) about $23 after tax & tip for a croissant sandwich and an almond milk vanilla latte. Parking in the area isn't super great either bc it's a busy area & it's all 2-hour parking (just for those curious, that does not affect my review.) The staff were all really nice tho! But I came with 2 friends to work for like 4-5 hours & we had to use 3 tables unfortunately bc they were so small. We likely won't come back to this location, but will stick with the UVil! But that's because we came to work; if I was in the area and not planning on hanging out I would probably come back to grab a coffee.

Yelp
Mr. west's u vill location has been my go to for perfection - both in terms of the quality of the food and drinks as well as service. The U vill location is like a well-oiled machine with personable service. The new Madrona branch, if it doesn't up its game to match that of its predecessor branches, will just hurt the U vill name/brand. With the exception of a blonde woman taking drink orders (who is lovely), the rest of the staff is zoned out and disinterested. First, this branch does NOT have the regular food menu. It just has baked goods and a couple simple toast options. Of the things we ordered, one was a Seattle Fog. After seeing about 10 customers who ordered after us receive their drink orders, I asked a brunette barista behind the counter about the status of our Seattle Fog. She replies, "oh I guess I could make you a Seattle fog but I don't know that I have enough ingredients left for that." I let her know that I already ordered that about 15 minutes ago. Another brunette with long hair (who may be the manager?) hears our convo but doesn't bother to help and just looks annoyed. Barista #1 proceeds to then make my London fog even though she just said that they barely had any ingredients left for that. Not a surprise that the London fog didn't taste like the normal London fog that I've gotten at other mr west locations. The place is also filthy as chunks of food dropped by customers were lying there on the floor beneath the tables and none of the four employees did anything about it the entire time we were there. The brunette with long hair who looks to be the manager (?) as she signed for a delivery instead decides to perch at one of the customer tables while sipping on some drink and typing on a laptop. One would expect the manager to take ownership and roll up her sleeves to do what's needed instead of ignoring the grunt work. Poor management. If the owners read this, as a loyal customer, my advice would be to get in there asap and get the managers and staff up to speed in whatever way you've done at the other locations. Also, a couple of other customers were also giving each other looks as a reaction to lackluster service and whispering about the shortfalls.

Yelp
Wanted to love this spot. Not one to ever bash a spot for a bad day, but after 4 consecutive horrible experiences felt compelled to share my experience. When it opened, cool place and experience. Morning crew was great made good coffee, Greeted you when you walked and pulled great shots. All the things. Not sure when things went bad. Took a couple weeks off and the place is not the same. First questionable experience was after ordering an Americano, I watched four other people get drinks in front of me, with a "oh my bad" response to any guestimation of when my drink might be ready. The drink i received was a cup of boiling water and a trash pull on my shot. Guess I was a burden. And chalk it up to a bad day. 2nd time was even stranger. Do not drink milk, never have I ever ordered a latte, and that doesn't sound like Americano at all. When I pointed out that's not what I ordered, the fella giggles I got you next time . If you dropped the ball that bad, ain't no way I'm letting you mess up twice. Rain check works for me. 3rd time was just flat out you ain't welcome here type vibe. Ordered a drip. Sit and wait, and wait - was clock watching because was curious as to how long I'd have to wait - 8 minutes - with baby in stroller. Uhm excuse me can I get that drip - reply was oh didn't see you there - probably right, because she turned around had back to customer's as we all waited for her to check her phone before she attempted to even push the button for the drip to fall into the cup, laborious task for sure. But today was the day I tapped out. Took over 10 minutes to get a drink with no one in front of us. Folgers in a Mr.Coffee cooking on a burner for 8hours was a far more superior cup of coffee than the absolute trash I received today after waiting for this extensive time, was sure I'd get that flavorful cup of coffee. Single origin coffees are some of the most flavorful flower fruity nutty chocolaty berry tasting epic coffee drinks to order. This Americano tasted like the underside a wet kitchen garbage smells. Rancid not even acidic in flavor, almost like they reused old spent grounds from Starbucks. Sad part is this dope amazing little spot, with some great roasters as partners, can provide amazing coffee, but the training lacks to provide that great coffee experience consistently. Wish them the best. Go here for the "likes" but recommendation is don't go here for the coffee.

Yelp
Tucked away in Madrona, Mr. West is a place to visit if you want good pastries and decent coffee. There are so many great coffee shops in the CD and Madrona. The best part of this one is the decor and the DELICIOUS maple bacon scone! Yum! Sweet and salty, part maple donut glaze and bacon chunks. My son devoured it! We also tried the Poppy Drop which was a better alternative to any poppy seed muffin. The americano and cortado were decent. I the customer service a plus- kind and considerate people!

Yelp
It's just so dang crowded! And the menu is...interesting. But the coffee was great. And our food came out quick.

Yelp
I absolutely love the Seattle Fog (their take on a London fog) at Mr. West, and try to get them whenever I am in town, especially at the U Village location. Recently I went to UVillage and the line was out the door and moving incredibly slow, as it usually is. I finally left after waiting forever and thought that my hour long trip to Seattle was wasted. I went to run errands elsewhere and was so happy to discover this Madrona Mr. West, I even drove by twice because I couldn't believe it! I was in and out in seconds, no line and fast service. The staff were friendly (I find them to be very snobby at the other locations) and my drink was perfect. Everyone inside was smiling which just feels so rare in Seattle anymore I had to note it. This little outpost is the best of all the Mr. Wests, I do declare.

Yelp
Stopped by on my walk in the neighborhood. Ordered a coffee with soy to go. No soy. And when it came no lid or offer of one. Had to walk to back of store to get my own. Coffee was barely warm and very bland. I'll give them awhile and try again.
google avatar

Britt H.

Yelp
Good service however unlike the downtown Seattle and U-village locations there isn't a big food selection at this location. This being I'll probably go to either of those locations instead of this one.

Stacey L.

Yelp
Food and coffees are fine but the baristas here seem to think customers are a TOTAL inconvenience. Teenagers who are the bottom of the barrel in terms of people they could have hired.

Leslee M.

Yelp
Great coffee, pastries uninviting! Would love to see scones and some savory items. Not much to pick from if you come 10:30/11:00am.ł
