"Mrs. Johnson’s Bakery has been a staple in Austin’s late night donut scene since the 1940s, in that time amassing a dedicated fan base of UT students and bar goers in search of sustenance after a long night of partying and/or studying (but probably not both). They’ve undergone some ownership changes and renovations in more recent times, but most fan favorites have remained untouched." - Nicolai McCrary

Google
I had heard some buzz about this place being the best place in austin for donuts, so I finally went to go try. Truthfully though, round rock donuts is a million times better. The apple fritter barely even has apple???? I'm super disappointed. Bought these to take home to my family and I feel like I could've done better going to heb. :/

Google
These are hands down the best donuts I have had to date! Just no frills, classic doughey goodness! I had a classic yeast glazed and a blueberry cake donut. They were both amazing! Even after 10pm they were super fresh and melted in my mouth. They definitely keep that old fashioned flavor and are not nearly as sweet as more popular options these days. It reminds me of my hometown donut shoppe in the best way! It is now a must stop for anytime I'm in Austin.

Google
They're open again! Woohoo. Out of plain glazed when we went at 10:30p. Bummer. Strawberry glazed, apple fritters, and blueberry cake donuts were delicious. One suggestion—keep donuts warm if possible. :) Thanks, AJ! We'll be back.

Natalie Tran

Google
I love their donuts! I especially love that not only can you purchase donuts in the morning but you can also get them in the evenings starting at 7:30pm when they start their production. I’m a fan of their blueberry, it’s got a nice crispness with a tasty flavor. It’s a family operated business and they are sweet hardworking people. Support local y’all!

Kim Reid

Google
The blueberry cake donut is really good. The apple fritter is also really good. The strawberry glazed yeast donut is both unusual and excellent. The regular glazed yeast is fine. I would recommend going and trying a variety. The hours are little bit odd for me. But the donuts are worth the effort.

Google
Boston cream filled was amazing. Strawberry glazed taste good and fluffy but I’d love it if there was more icing. A bit disappointed. Cake donut was fluffy and not too sweet I prefer different shape though. It’s also pretty pricy I got 3 pieces for $5.82

Google
This place is a charming hole-in-the-wall bakery staple of Austin. I think the donut quality was similar or better since the remodel and omg the ability to get fresh donuts at 1:30am on a Saturday night? Or 3am for that matter. The low reviews don’t…get it? The cake donuts were light and fluffy and the vanilla one was a surprise favorite. Plus we had leftovers for the next morning! To clarify quality: My donuts were room temp or a bit warmer than that (not cold!)

An Austin staple. Best old skool donut spot in the city. Sooo many options. Sooo much deliciousness. Donuts: Blueberry Cake - 5/5 Chocolate Cake - 5/5 Cookies: Chocolate Chip - 5/5 Cinnamon Roll - 4/5 The cake donuts are my absolute favorites. The cookies are really delicious too. Such an incredible value for the amount of food. This is a must do spot in Austin.

Yelp
I drive by often and finally got half a dozen after a couple of margs at Vamonos down the road. They're open late which is great for that late night sweet fix or craving. Staff offered us samples and were super friendly upon walking in. You can smell all the fresh doughnuts, and when you snack on some samples you get to peruse the glass case. We got a variety: 2 Boston cream doughnuts 1 strawberry filled 1 raspberry filled 1 cinnamon 1 chocolate glazed The doughnuts are not too sweet, perfect with a cup of coffee. Im eager to come back to try blueberry and chocolate cake doughnuts. They open at 7pm, and close at 9am so you know you'll have somewhere that's open for when you finish dinner!

Kim H.

Yelp
Massive delicious cinnamon rolls. Don't skip on those. Got a variety box of doughnuts for my coworkers. Doughnuts looked good but didn't eat any. They must of been good bc the box didn't last 10 min and they were gone. Fair price and quick service at the window.

Karlyn K.

Yelp
They were closed despite having open hours. So be careful as hours may not be accurate. Maybe next time we can try them.

Connie L.

Yelp
They are BACK open. Looks so fresh & clean. Drive-thru/walk-up window is on the otherside of the building. But great and friendly staff.

Joe M.

Yelp
Donuts are wonderful but I fo t know if this is open anymore. It has had about 4-5 different owners and the last revamp of the place seemed to be going well but then it closed down

john l.

Yelp
It appears they are closed for good thank God!, let me assure you they were absolutely horrible . I have been going to Mrs. Johnson's since I was a boy which has been for more than 50 years. So I can't tell you how excited I was to see they were open under new management (Tyson's Taco). Well that excitement was short lived, first off the doughnuts were so bad on so many levels it's hard to know where to start but I'll try. To start with the Icing on the glazed donuts was barley present, but that turned out to be a good thing because the icing itself tasted off and low quality. The donut itself was as thick and heavy as modeling clay. It was worse than an HEB donut and that my friend took some real effort to accomplish! The price for a half dozen donuts was almost 12 dollars and if that's not bad enough they had no chocolate milk, white milk or coffee???. It was so depressing on so many levels. Mrs Johnson must be turning over in her grave at this very moment, but I'm sure she feels better than I did after I ate that first donut. My previous review 5 years ago was when the place was owned by another proprietor and as bad and unsanitary as they were, they were worlds above Tysons Tacos version. -J. Latimer

Yelp
Got some of these and I honestly could not finish and threw out. Donuts were extremely dry, did not taste like anything else but stale bread, and I had a fritter that was pretty much stale bread also. Too many better donut options in Austin.... I'd even prefer Walmarts donuts over these....

Melissa G.

Yelp
In my 20 years of L-I-V-I-N in Austin I have been LOVING Mrs. Johnson's Bakery delicious donuts and their drive-thru service. I used to live right behind the bakery and I can contest that around 2-3am you can smell the best smells in the neighborhood coming from Mrs. Johnson's! This is our favorite late night "let's go grab a late night donut" spot as we always know we are going to get the freshest batch of donuts to satisfy our deepest donut cravings. We typically come over after 8pm as they run their business at night to early morning. Highly recommend ordering a dozen mixed box and be sure to get some filled donuts too as they are fantastic. Cash or card works here and I want to say they are allowing people to go inside now that capacities for food establishments have loosened up in this pandemic age. Oh and don't sleep on those kolaches! They are a great price and easily warm up nicely the next morning in the 'wave.

Jasmine C.

Yelp
Donuts are literally TRASH. Nothing "HOT" about these donuts at all. They're hard and cold!!! Idk wth kinda of strawberry glazed they eat, but sorry these are NOT it. A huge disappointment growing up right down the street 20+ years from this place, to go back and have these kind of donuts. A waste of $20 straight up.

Paola L.

Yelp
I REALLY missed this late night donut shop while it was closed for new ownership and reconstruction and am thrilled to have it back. The menu has changed and there's no longer kolaches but we move forth and I am glad the donuts have remained delicious. They now have a larger selection of coffee items and y'all.. horchata and dirty horchata! Which I haven't had but I will return with that answer because I love tacorridos equinox (dirty horchata) and I would love to have another favorite. So I've had the chocolate/strawberry glazed, apple fritter, lemon filled, and strawberry filled and they're almost up to the original Mrs. Johnson's standards. I love that the Apple fritter is so big you can eat half and save half for your coffee in the morning.. it's usually our 12am treat. One thing to know is their order speaker box is usually down and there's never signs so people end up waiting there for a long time, but if they don't answer or say anything I'd just pull up.

Justin A.

Yelp
These donuts are a an absolute pile of hot garbage. COMBO Donuts off Lamar are the best donuts in Austin and it's not even close.

Emmett M.

Yelp
Grew up going to this place as kid and it was always my favorite. I guess I'm happy they kept it around but other than that it's a flat out disappointment gave it a few try's and it's was cold everytime(might as well take ur new sign down) or they don't have the simplest donuts??? 7-11 donuts are better and it's sad knowing this place will never be like it was :/

Erin P.

Yelp
Apparently the new owners bought the bakery but the recipes weren't included in that deal :(

Brittney B.

Yelp
If you are a fan of the original Mrs. Johnson's this is not the place for you!!! The donuts will never be "Hot", I repeat they do not have HOT donuts l!! During my visit' "I question the guy at the window regarding "Hot donuts" and he told me that the the original owners microwaved the donuts and that's why there is a "Hot Donut Sign" Ummm sir, that is not true. Please know the history of the establishment you work at. Just as others have stated, the donuts taste greasy warmed up in a microwave but are decent cold. I will not return :(

Natalie R.

Yelp
Not the same. I've been going here for years and was so disappointed when I finally decided to try since the new owners took over. Donuts are cold and not fresh at all. Sadly, I won't be going back.

Michael F.

Yelp
They are back open, but it isn't every day, I think it's Thursday night through Sunday right now. I'm glad they're back. As someone who has eaten Mrs. Johnson's donuts since the 1960s, I can tell you that they are getting some things right with the reopen. It's bright and clean, new equipment installed, new paint, and an outside table area that is covered took the place of the old drive-through lane. The new lane snakes around the back of the building and comes up the other side. Mrs. Johnson's used a different type of vanilla in their recipe to give it their signature flavor. I don't know if this new incarnation is using the same, but the flavor is close to the original I remember. So far I have only had the glazed and the chocolate iced, but - and again, this is early, they're still finding their footing - the donuts are way off. The chocolate icing is far too bitter and it's very thin and gummy. The traditional icing was almost like a fudge, it was much lighter in color, thick, and when it cooled it would actually break off of the donut into chunks of candy/icing. No more, it's just a black, sticky goo that is bitter and probably some "artisan cacao" type of icing. The worst culprit though is that the donuts are not as fluffy and airy as they were, not by a long shot. I'd estimate that these are half as high as the old ones, and they're tough and chewy. Chewy when they're hot, resisting pulling apart when you bite them. When they're cold they're still chewy and tough, but they break off into chunks when bitten. I don't know if they've not been proofed long enough or if there is a yeast problem, but these are small, dense, and really not satisfying at all even when they are hot. Since we're talking about the base donut here, it means that it will affect all of their products. I hope they figure this out soon. If they don't, that flashing neon sign won't be a promise, it'll just be another trick of memory.

Mason Q.

Yelp
So first I would like to say that I am a huge fan of Mrs. Johnson's and I applaud the new owners for keeping an Austin institution open. On many occasions, I would stop by on the way home from a night out in college and hope that I could get fresh and hot glazed donuts. Even if they were not hot, they were always available. That brings me to my review of the current store. I have been twice and tried to order glazed donuts only to be told that they are out. There are plenty of other offerings but as DKR always said, "Dance with who bring ya!" IMO, there should always be glazed donuts at Mrs. Johnson's. Full stop! I'll keep trying. That is all.

James M.

Yelp
Boring menu and the whole ordering experience is just so terrible. Looks like it is closed all the time... better off just dealing with the drunk people on 6th and going to Voodoo

Steven M.

Yelp
Donuts are one of the most simple pleasures on earth and sometimes you want donuts without any bells and whistles, you just want some simple donuts and that's exactly where a place like Mrs. Johnson's Bakery comes in to make the save. I came here last night super late with some friends and was told that this was the go-to spot for stripped down donuts. The place was dead last night when we came in around 11:30PM. The gentleman working the counter helped us super quick and before I knew it I was walking out with a glaze donuts and a chocolate donut and let me tell you, it was exactly what I wanted in every way. The glaze donut was warm and tasted like heaven. The chocolate donut was equally as good and tasted like the donuts I used to get in Connecticut as a little kid, simple and good. Overall, this place was awesome and I can't forget to mention that both donuts came to only $1.66 total.....for 2 donuts?!?! Yeah, so come on down and enjoy some donuts!

Scott G.

Yelp
I feel lied too... the doughnuts are not "hot" like the sign indicates. Also the customer service & overall experience is garbage,. it took way too long to fulfill my order, given there was just one person in front of me. I guess Austin is officially in ruin these days. Best of luck. Flavor is meh... I finally tried the reopen... oh well

Dean S.

Yelp
Not good. Cold donuts even though the "hot donuts" sign was on. Creme filled donuts weren't good either.

Joshua M.

Yelp
These are not The mrs johnson donuts anymore! These donuts are terrible.. Boston crème donut filling was extremely runny.. The original glazed was super dense.. quality is no longer the same on these donuts! Really disappointed!

Eric B.

Yelp
Not the same place as it used to be. The donuts aren't hot. But the guy working the counter was telling everyone to just warm them up at home. From reading other comments it appears they have new owners. They should change the name. And the sign. Cold Round Rock donuts are better.

Max H.

Yelp
Yo! They're back!! Check out their new hours and hit up the drive through! Promise y'all won't be disappointed!

Fred T.

Yelp
I Drove past Mrs. Johnson's Bakery today. Looks like it is either back open, or opening soon.

JohnPaul H.

Yelp
Ever since they re did the place it hasn't been the same. The doughnuts are never fresh. They rarely have any options available. Doughnuts just aren't what they used to be. I doubt it's ran by the same people. I grew up going to this place & up until they closed for renovations it was always the same but now nothing seems the same.

Jodi H.

Yelp
Still on the prowl for my favorite local donut spot. I love the fact that Mrs. Johnson's has a drive-through. DRIVE THRU FOR DONUTS...yes! However, the donuts that I had had this strange oily aftertaste to it. I had a dozen of the donut holes, three regular glazed, and two cake donuts--one plain and one chocolate. My favorite would probably be the cake donut. The donut holes were on the smaller size, but they gave me more than a dozen which is always nice. The glazed donuts were pretty yummy and fluffy, but again with that aftertaste that was left in my mouth...it reminded me of animal fat. The cake donuts tasted the best in my opinion...probably because there wasn't any glaze on it, but the oils were definitely thick at this spot. The price is very cheap, and everything came out to under $5 I believe. But I'd rather pay a little more for better quality and less soaked-in-oil donuts. I'm sad to say that Mrs. Johnson's won't be my local donut spot. They still have great service and lots of customers, so I'm happy for them. Oh, and there is a small private plaza for parking, but it is sparse and I have seen people do street parking. Let me know if you've found a donut spot that is your go-to.

Veronica H.

Yelp
The smell of donuts wafting over brought us in while we were waiting for our tacos next door. Lucky for us, the glazed donuts that just came out were freshly baked! I asked for a maple donut and they even dipped it fresh for me since they didn't have any sitting out. The guys that run the place are super friendly and happy to chat (as much as they can while it's busy). The donuts are a little on the smaller side, but I would definitely say it's quality over quantity. For me, one is enough, but these might be the same size as Krispy Kreme's donuts. so delicious and definitely stopping in again soon and bringing all of my visiting friends here.

Adam H.

Yelp
Use to be the best donuts in town. Now they are trash nothing like before thick heavy glaze just like crispy cream, chewy donuts which is a first. The real Mrs Johnsons donuts were soft and light, i use to describe them by saying its like eating delicious air.Eat three or four without even realizing it.Sad to see Mrs Johnsons Donuts being replaced with this show some respect and change the name.Gave one star because couldn't post without doing so.

Cal K.

Yelp
Yes this place is open, under new management. Again, It's not the same donuts we use to enjoy. Tried last night, the donuts are chewy and really really bad. Who care about the renovated new place! So if you are the original Mrs Johnson's donuts lover, stay away!

Web N.

Yelp
This isn't Mrs Jonhson,s Bakery. They using the name buy the donuts are bad. They are cold and not hot like the old Bakery use to be. Bring back the old owners!

Ashley S.

Yelp
Went there to get some good ol' hot fresh Mrs. Johnson's donuts. I have been going here since I was little. Horrrible. Stale. Greasy. They no longer make them fresh at 9pm. I would never go here again. Sucks that the newer owners don't make them like they have always been made. Why do things have to change!! Anyways, go somewhere else. If you know of a good place that has good old school donuts please let me know!! Thx.

Sam S.

Yelp
I ordered $80 worth of donuts for pickup. They sent me an order confirmation that it was about to be ready. I showed up 30 minutes later, at my assigned time. Store closed. No one there, no one answering the phones. Took my money and ran.

Robert C.

Yelp
Eat local, always eat local cause it's better. This donut shop is the best in Austin and from all other donut shops. They open at 7pm and the donuts are soft and chewy with the perfect glaze over the donut. It's not over sugared like most donut shops too. Please support local restaurants they make our city taste good.

Matthew D.

Yelp
Complete trash. They were open for 2 hours on a Sunday and I arrived 38 minutes before they closed. A sign was already put on the window stated that they were done for the day. I was coming in to buy 3 dozen of whatever they had left. Employee didn't even have the hospitality to come to the door to explain. He just waved me off and basically insinuated that we don't need your business. Never going to attempt to try this place and most definitely going to tell you everyone. Trash.

Shao-Lon Y.

Yelp
This place is extremely sketchy, but if you can get past that fact, then this place makes great donuts. The lady who helped me was pretty friendly despite me coming in at 11 pm and she even got me fresh apple fritters. I like how they have their donut making operation open to viewing, so you know that the donuts are being made fresh. The fruit loops strawberry frosted donut was great. The donut was nice and chewy and had a good sweetness from the strawberry glaze. The fruit loops added a nice crunch. The raspberry filled donut was also good. The filling had a nice tartness so the donut wasn't too sweet. I loved the apple fritters. It might be because I got a fresh one but it was amazing. It was bursting with apple and cinnamon flavors and had a delightfully soft texture. This place was also super cheap. Averaging around $.80 for a donut, this place is a great deal, especially considering the quality of the donuts.

Lydia H.

Yelp
My boyfriend hyped this place up for MONTHS and I finally got the chance to try some of their donuts. I don't know if it's due to my boyfriend's high praise, or if they had an off day, but these donuts were no different than your regular store-bought ones. I was expecting a mindblowing experience, but instead, I felt like I wasted calories. I had an apple fritter that tasted days old -- the dough was dry and while I was chewing, I tasted old oil. The place is filthy and as I was taking a picture of the donut racks, one of the people working there warned, "NO PICTURES". Soo that's kind of concerning. Although the items are relatively cheap, I'd prefer any other donut shop where it's a lot cleaner and has better tasting products.

Lindsey C.

Yelp
These donuts are actively bad. I'll eat anything and I threw these out. I went to mrs Johnson's back in the day and the old recipe was addicting. I can tell there is new ownership and it's a major bummer.

Manuel E.

Yelp
I have been going to this bakery since I was a young boy. I'm sixty now. It's always been at least a forty five minute drive if we wanted their donuts and normally very late or early morning hours if you wanted them warm. Nothing has changed over the years. The building is the same. The sign is still the same even the location has never changed. What has changed is the quality of the product. The donuts have gotten so small why even bother. Have the few ingredients you use gotten so expensive that you've resorted to making donuts half the size of a regular donut? There is no profit to be made on a person who doesn't return. I am now one of those people. It's very sad to see your standards slip away.

Dao T.

Yelp
Stumbled by this donut shop on my way to work because I was craving a kolache and a donut. It wasn't busy at all when I arrived, 7:30 a.m (unusual for a donut shop) however i was very disappointed! The kolache was cold and the breading was very dry. The hotdog inside tasted old and I couldn't even take another bite. The strawberry filling donut was a disappointment as well. I will not be coming here again.

Andrew C.

Yelp
On the corner of Airport and 49 1/2 - don't let the dingy rundown exterior of this place fool you - nor the dated drab interior with rickety machinery. Just watch the donuts being punched out, floating over a sea of oil, sliding down a slide to a conveyer where they ride under a waterfall of sugar. The plain donuts are so fresh, soft pillowy dough with just the right amount of glaze. Sweet but not too sweet and so so melty. Half a dozen of assorted with a couple of kolaches pit is about $10. Note - they discouraged any photos of the interior.

Lisa R.

Yelp
Solid donuts! We really liked the flavor of the chocolate glaze and the chocolate dough. The texture of the old-fashioned cake donuts and the yeast donuts was spot on, and none of the donuts seemed too oily. I'm surprised how good the donuts were even though we picked them up shortly before they closed at 9am.

Kristen W.

Yelp
Drove out there tonight. Not currently open "for a few weeks" for remodeling. Wish this was posted online somewhere. Love the nighttime hot donuts!

Irma S.

Yelp
This is an amazing place to go, especially when you have those late, sweet late cravings

Monica K.

Yelp
Stopped in an a whim after eating dinner at Tyson's tacos (right next door). I'm not sure if they were even actually open. According to the hours on yelp they weren't. If that's the case the owners were extremely generous to let us come in and buy doughnuts during their off hours. I only got two doughnuts to share with my boyfriend. One was a glazed doughnut, hot off the assembly line, and one was a strawberry frosted. The glazed was delicious. There truly is nothing like a fresh classic doughnut. And as a strawberry frosted doughnut connoisseur, this was honestly the best one I've had in my life. Not to mention the doughnuts are extremely reasonably priced! Do yourself a favor, get in on the goods and check this place out! You won't be disappointed.

Unknown N.

Yelp
Let's start with the how they misheard my order, i asked for powered donut holes and specifies that twice, got regular and asked for 6, but was told they're sold by the dozen, so I was like fine a dozen. Well she thought I meant 6 dozen, but we can chalk that to a miscommunication, fine. I was given a refund for the miscommunication. Then they don't carry basic donut flavors, which was disappointing. Then taste, I was pretty upset for my chocolate sprinkle donut, the bread was off but the icing was horrible, you could see it separating. It tasted so fake, I couldn't even finish it. The donut holes were mediocre, like tasty but definitely not great. This is not the Mrs. Johnson's bakery I grew up with, I believe they were bought out because it looks and tastes completely different. This place is trying to be different and fancy. It's no longer the homemade feel and taste with the amazing guys who used to own it and work it. They need to go back to the original Mrs. Johnson's.

Quyen D.

Yelp
What a nice little donut shop with the nicest couple! They are open throughout the night and I had stopped by after eating at Tyson's because I had just heard someone else saying it was so good! I got the strawberry iced donut with fruit loops of top. Pretty good! The strawberry icing tasted sweet and tart, not too tart though, it had a nice fruity flavor! The donut itself was well fried. Soft on the inside with a slight crisp on the outside from the frying and the glaze. The lady who gave me my donut was very sweet and her husband who was frying the donuts was nice. They are the cutest!

Hank R.

Yelp
What happened to mrs Johnson's bakery they never open anymore??? Hopefully this is just a set back but wasn't open today. Again today I went by there and closed

Bobbi I H.

Yelp
Greasy balls of dough, if you could even call it that. I've been going to Mrs Johnson's for 10+ years, and it was the best donut shop there is. However, on August 7th i received the yuckiest donut ever. It was sopped in grease and the donuts were puny--no rise in the dough at all. Like how do you sell this at all and think it's ok?? Like i want to see you eat it sir. Just so sad and disappointing. I feel like I'm going through the stages of grief all at once right now. Maybe it was just a fluke (i sure hope so), because it would be so sad it this place we're not the shining star it used to be. Just pain. I tried to even air fry them to get the grease out and it was an unfruitful attempt. I will give this beloved place a second shot but dang is this upsetting.
