The Mission Cantina Review - Hollywood - Los Angeles - The Infatuation

"Mission Cantina is one of most overlooked casual dinner spots in Hollywood. The tiny Mexican spot on Sunset doesn’t look like much from the outside, but they serve solid food at affordable prices in a mellow environment you actually want to hang out in. Also, Tuesdays are $1 taco night." - Brant Cox

Preservationists Cringe as Unpermitted Renovation Threatens Historic Pig ‘n Whistle Restaurant | Eater LA

"The incoming Mexican chain operator that has taken over the historic Hollywood space is reported to be undertaking visible renovations — including removal of much former furniture, replacement of the old signage with the new tenant's name, and installation of a large colorful interior mural — work that preservationists contend is occurring without proper permits. The operator is run by Jorge Cuevas, who also operates other Mexican concepts and a lifestyle brand; the chain has existing locations in Brea, Downey, and Anaheim and several other projects announced. Reporters sought comment from the operator about the scope and plans for the site but had not received a response." - Matthew Kang

It’s my first time at Mr. Tempo and it’s such a vibe! The food is great! I got The Tempo Wings and Steak tacos! Loved my whiskey sour and Mexican Candy shots! Our Host Fabian was amazing! Such wonderful service!

Google
My favorite place of all time to come to eat. Also Mr Fabian has phenomenal customer service he made sure we were ok and enjoying everything. The vibes were good. Food is excellent fresh and hot. I ordered steak tacos and seafood rice which are my favorite.

Google
Absolutely amazing experience! The owner Mario is very nice and the food is so delicious. When visiting Hollywood I would highly recommend coming here. The Margarita’s are top tier. Very affordable

Google
First time here and won’t be the last time. Came to bring a family member to see Hollywood and stumbled across this place. The service was amazing Manuela Y Louisa provided amazing service. The food was delicious and prices were reasonable. Happy hour all day you can’t beat that.

Google
There were only a couple waiters working during our visit, so it took a while to be served and order more drinks, but the drinks were great! I loved the michelada with tamarindo. The food was OK for snacking with the group, but not something I’d want to eat for a full meal. Overall the space was awesome for photos and great to watch the Dodgers play. I appreciated how many drink options they had - it took us forever to choose! Be sure to check the happy hour menu on the back of the FOOD menu (drinks and food are on this happy hour menu, but we missed it)

Google
We got the flight and some good food! The service was great and the staff super helpful. Wanted to go back another night but ran out of time 10/10

Google
Nice blend of Asian/mexican food. We got the street tacos and sushi. I can’t remember the name of the sushi but it had melted mozzarella over the top of it. Something we had to try. After we tried it, it’s not anything we’d ever try again. It’s not horrible but just doesn’t belong on sushi. The dishes themselves minus the mozzarella was delicious and the fresh salsa and home made chips were incredible!

Google
We were walking past when looking for somewhere to eat and loved the look and vibe of it. We had food and drinks and both were great, reasonably priced as well which was a bonus. Authentic Mexican food can't be beaten, would definitely recommend to anyone who's in the area!

Yelp
Came here for nachos & cervezas after a day of wandering around. My friend recommended we stop by before he took off to a Dodgers vs. Mets game. ;-) Mr. Tempo Cantina looks like the perfect amalgamation of an El Torito, TGI Fridays, and Hard Rock Cafe with lots of Hollywood glitz thrown in for good measure. We all got loaded up on beers, chips, & salsa before the nachos came out ... oops! Pretty sure I didn't eat anything else till breakfast the next day. Still, the food was solid and the beers were ICE COLD. I mean frostbite cold! Since we were there between lunch and dinner, there was a lull which meant service was notably slower. Not a problem, but my buddy had to get to Dodger Stadium in time to see the game. We eventually got out and he was able to make it. I'd like to come back here again and actually try some of their dishes.

Yelp
Obviously geared toward tourists and they get a lot of foot traffic, though there weren't many patrons inside on a Sunday night. I don't normally hang out in this area but this is a cool spot to check out once. Eye catching decor inside. Looks like a nice spot to catch a game. I got the Mia's Margarita which was delicious, I'm super into tajin. The menu is interesting and has a lot of options to appeal to the masses, I went with the Crunchy Roll which was very average. I wouldn't go out of my way but if you happen to be on the block, it's not a bad place to stop for a break.

Yelp
$10 for two Taquitos during happy hour? lol ya okay Tourists nor locals should visit Mr Tempo. I had time to kill and didn't want a full meal so I figured I stop in to get a drink and snack during happy hour. Although the hours and days are great, the actual deals suck. At least the Modelo was cold but the Taquitos were dry, bland, and you barely get a squirt of sour cream on the side. And all the wilted soggy lettuce underneath? Why? So pointless

Yelp
We wanted to grab a margarita for Cinco De Mayo and saw that they were having a few specials - margaritas $5, tequila shots $5. But normally they have happy hour all day from the opening to 6pm daily and Mon-Thur, they also have a late night happy our from 9-12am During the week day afternoon, it's pretty empty but I'm sure the evenings get much busier. The restaurant is HUGE and I love the decor. Even the long hall way walk down towards the restroom was beautiful. So vibrant. All our servers were fantastic - the hostess was adorable and sweet. The restaurant was empty so we got great service. Drinks were whatever. The margaritas were super sweet. I had the regular margarita which wasn't as sweet as my friends strawberry margarita but I wasn't a fan. They had taco specials and we enjoyed the chicken and beef but the pork wasn't all that great. The restaurant is a 5 min walk from the Ovation closer to Hollywood and Highland. I would definitely stop back if I'm in the area again.

Yelp
This is an inviting and beautiful restaurant right on Hollywood Bvld. Walking inside you instantly put behind you the crush of bodies outside on the Hollywood Walk. The server was friendly, informative, and quick. All of our food came quickly. Our kids had quesadillas and hamburgers with fries. The fries were awesome! We got the dirty fries and the pork belly bites. Delicious! My wife loved the Aguachile. Worth the stop if you are on the Hollywood Walk of Fame!

Yelp
I'm back and I wish I had a better experience. We were charged a $3 fee for this size of "extra sauce" I had ranch and my gf had spicy mayo Then when I said..oh! We didn't know, you should tell us it's an extra charge.. he..Manny said, it's happy hour and you are complaining? Wow! Umm it's principle and HH doesn't mean we get extra charged IMO Again, you have to advocate for yourself They also charged extra on the HH margarita without saying And we specifically asked

Sonia G.

Yelp
Hardly anyone in here and yet they took forever to take our order .Glass smelled dirty .Food is just okay nothing that stood out Nice presentation but not very tasty. Waitress was cordial.
google avatar

Yelp
STRIAGHT BUSSSIN! The taquitos were SOO good and chicken was juicy! Didn't even need the sauce, which was good as well. Ordered off the happy hour menu, great selection of drinks and food. I forgot the drink I ordered but it had egg whites and it was delicious

Yelp
Came here with my fiancé and his coworkers before going to a comedy show at Dolby theatre. They have happy hour from open to 6pm. They also have two menus (food and drink menu) which both have many options to choose from. We were lucky to get the metered street parking but I will say there is not much street parking available as it's in a busy area. My fiancé and I started off with the hot Cheeto fries and the dirty fries. I haven't had hot Cheetos in a long time so I really enjoyed my fries. They were really good for a starter. Next my fiancé and I ordered a strawberry margarita and an old fashioned. Both drinks were delicious, old fashioned drinks usually taste really strong for me but his had a really good flavor. For our meal I got the fajitas with chicken and steak. The fajitas had a lot of juice on them and was a different flavor than I'm used to but really good. The chicken especially was so tasty. The steak pieces though were honestly really tiny, I almost thought they forgot to include the double meat. I'd say maybe make the chunks bigger like the chicken. I also enjoyed the rice and the little bits of cheese in the guac. I will say though that the beans were too salty for me. I didn't end up finishing them. My fiancé got the bone marrow burger (I think that's the name) and he looked like he enjoyed his meal. The plate itself had a nice presentation. Overall a nice little spot, depending on what you order it can get pricey. The happy hour deal was worth it though, we both got two drinks each. I think the fajitas were worth the price as well. Fries were also a great appetizer. I'd definitely come back for the happy hour deal!

Yelp
i reeaally like tempo cantina, my favorite spot is the one located in the Santa Monica area. So when i saw that they had one in the Hollywood area my friend and i decided to come here since we were in the area. As we walked in, we were immediately greeted and seated at a table. our waitress was really nice and attentive. We were able to order our drinks first thing and tempo is one of the places that has the best drinks! i love the margarita flights, it's so good! After we placed our order to eat, while we were having our conversation waiting for our food, we kept getting interrupted by random sellers coming into the restaurant offering their products for us to buy or to take pictures. i understand it's a hustle, but getting interrupted 3x was starting to annoy me. that was the only negative thing I'd have to say. once our food arrived, it smelled and looked really good. my friend and i both got ourselves some tacos. i always get their birria tacos they are so good and fulfilling! we didn't wait that long for our food and besides the interruptions, we had a good time.

Yelp
Good spot for late night bites in Hollywood. The portions are enormous. I ordered a carne asada burrito and it came with fries. Which felt odd to get an order of fries as a side with a burrito. I took half my burrito and most of my fries home. The dipping sauces and ketchup that came with the food was odd, just did not work well. Plain ketchup and some good salsa would be been just fine. It took a while to get all our food and quite some time just to get to-go boxes and the check. Room for improvements. It's a vibrate feel in this restaurant, good for late night bites.

Yelp
The shrimp ceviche and birria tacos were delicious!! The ambiance was such a great vibe! Services was nice. For sure coming back soon!
google avatar

Nicholle C.

Yelp
We asked for waters three times, nothing. Their free chips and salsa is about 5 chips. Horrible service, we felt ignored. Then they charged us $8 for the "free chips and salsa!" We will not return!

Krys S.

Yelp
Had a girls' brunch here and unfortunately, it was a disappointing experience. We waited about 15 minutes before our server even came to the table, and it took a total of 30 minutes just to get chips and salsa and the restaurant wasn't even that busy. The food arrived cold and overall wasn't very impressive in terms of flavor or quality. Be aware that they charge for chips, salsa, and chili, which feels excessive given the underwhelming service and food. It seems like this place might be more popular for their drinks than the food itself. Wouldn't return for a meal, but maybe it's worth checking out if you're just here for the cocktails.
google avatar

Ernie M.

Yelp
Upon entrance, the hostess was very nice and respectful to our party. We were able to grab a table in less than 5 minutes, however the only downside was having the waiter come and take our orders as it took quite some time. Nevertheless, the food and drinks were excellent with no issues there. I would recommend this place to families or groups after a night out.
google avatar

Heavyn K.

Yelp
super expensive drinks but very good food (: - good vibes and kind waitresses. They got my order wrong, but it was still good.
google avatar

Nancy V.

Yelp
We did not dine in and only stopped by for a few drinks to kill time. We are familiar with the bar as we use to go often to the location in Downey. Fabian attended to us and was quick with our drinks and very friendly. He really wanted us to dine in we told him that we would give Downey another try in the future and he guaranteed service is much different. So.... future review coming soon.

Yelp
I tried to eat at a non chain restaurant around Hollywood Blvd. This Mexican place popped up. I had this plate called Duo Ceviche and Birria Tacos. There was a language barrier because I asked for both and she only brought a ceviche. After :20 minute wait I asked about tacos and was told I never ordered them. So there, lost in translation. Food ok. Ceviche well presented. In the medley of ingredients, not much actual fish. Tacos well presented too. Plenty of beef inside. Place well located on the boulevard. They had summer olimpiad soccer match on TVs which was good. Did not have any alcohol but imagine it is a good place to grab a margarita.

Yelp
Mr. Tempo's Cantina - A Latino Fiesta in the Heart of Hollywood! ¡Ay, Dios mío! This place is an absolute gem--a diamond in the rough --even with the whole Hollywood thing going on. But trust me, Mr. Tempo's Cantina is a VIBE. From the moment you walk in, the colors, the music, the lights--it's like stepping into a Mexican dream with a splash of modern swagger. Located in the historic Egyptian Theatre complex on Hollywood Blvd, this spot brings the party, the flavor, and the cultura! The walls? Vibrant! The music? Pure energy! The drinks? Ay ay ayyy... pure magic! And let's not forget our amazing waitress--she made us feel like VIPs from the second we sat down! Now, let's talk about the food We went all in, and every bite was a flavor explosion : Mexican-inspired sushi roll - Who knew sushi and Mexico could be best friends? Taco appetizers - Porque OBVIAMENTE. Delicious. Carne Asada plate - Juicy, tender, and full of that smoky grill flavor. Perfecto. Enchilada Trio - Three kinds of cheesy, saucy goodness. Can't pick a fave because they were all ! Margaritas - Fresh, strong, and dangerously good. And let's talk about that MASSIVE menu! So many things I still need to try! This place is an absolute must. If you're in Hollywood and you DON'T go, you're doing life wrong. We will 1000% be back for more comida, música, and drinks. GO. RIGHT. NOW.
google avatar

Cassandra C.

Yelp
Friendly and fast service! If I came again I'd get the Birria fries. Fun music and clean location.

Yelp
Great environment awesome pictures on the wall and the service is great. The food is amazing. Appreciate the Mexican vibe!!!

Yelp
I really enjoyed it here! I was going to an event right next door at the Egyptian and was early so decided to grab some drinks! I ate beforehand so I didn't try the food but I definitely be going back! I had their Guava margarita and Pomegranate margarita on their happy hour menu! Both were so tasty, but the Guava drink was my favorite! They both had a tajin rim. On Happy Hour these margaritas are only $7! Such a deal. The staff was so nice and attentive and I really enjoyed the unique decor inside as well. I'll definitely be back!

Yelp
This place is located in club central of LA. Perfect pit stop to load up on quality Mexican cuisine with a modern fun flair! The Bone Marrow tacos are my favorite. Manny suggested the Mexican Lollipop shot and it has fresh watermelon juice and was an excellent start to the night. Manny service really made the evening, the suggestions were everything we were looking for. The drinks are delicious and strong. The vibe is upbeat and the aesthetic is perfect for the pre party photo shoot!! Love stopping here before any event in LA.

Yelp
Nice place to eat down the strip. The food we ordered were between happy hour so prices were reasonable. We got the street tacos which came with three (asada, pastor, chicken), mini birria which came with 4, and the shrimp ceviche. The food was good, I would have just preferred to have more tostadas that came with the ceviche. It's 2$ extra for more and that was fine with me. The drinks were also good. Service was great, she checked in on us frequently and was very nice.
google avatar

Gina G.

Yelp
Fun food drinks clean on a Saturday morning not much people but the service was good and friendly

Yazmin L.

Yelp
Food was so good and service was amazing as well. Love Erika our server she was so sweet and nice

Yelp
Manuel our server really took care of us! Truly enjoyed the food and drinks! Will be back again!

Yelp
Took a couple of clients to lunch. First appearances, place is very large, kind of dated, but comfortable. Waiter promptly took order and brought us drinks. Food delivery was semi- quick for 1 of my guests, myself and the other guest, not so much, mine came next, and which I must admit was very good, I got the crab tostada and the avocado salad. We had ordered the chorizo fundido which although I didn't try my guest said it was very good, I can tell you it was extremely cheesy. My salad was mixed greens with grilled avocado and candied nuts, it was tossed in a vinaigrette, again, liked it very much. The crab was marinated in lemon with onions and cilantro, served with a tostada, very tasty. My guest finally got his food, he ordered a sushi roll, he was not impressed. All in all, not a bad experience and I think I'd go back of the opportunity presents itself.

Lucy R.

Yelp
The drinks were good and very cheap considering it was happy hour. Monday is Margarita Mondays and Wednesdays is ladies night! So these are good days to go if you are trying to have a few drinks. The food was good too but just very small portions for the price. But other than that the service and vibe were pleasant! Will I go back ! Yes!
google avatar

Nicole K.

Yelp
Wednesday evening I decided to go and have surf and turf tacos. When I got my food, it was not surfing turf, It was steak only.I advised the manager that I had the wrong food and he took it back to the kitchen. When he brought it back to me I noticed there were large whole shrimp on top of my steak, not cut up or blended with the meat and the same taco that I took a bite out of was back on my plate. I was expecting to get my meal re-made considering it was the wrong order. This was very disappointing considering the server was the manager that night because they were short staffed. This is no excuse to downgrade the service. I should have gone to Kings and Queens ....They would never give me eaten off food....

Jessica X.

Yelp
The service and food is excellent. The music was uncomfortably loud though. If they turn the music down a notch and it would be 5 stars. I'm not a fan of having to yell at the people at my table and the server. I went on a Saturday night and there was a DJ, but no one was dancing. Do people dance here?
google avatar

Chantal S.

Yelp
Underwhelmed with the service, the vegetables, chicken, and rice were good. Although, a small portion of my chicken was undercooked and hard to cut through. The drink "La Reina" was not presented as described and didn't taste good. I left behind most of it. The restaurant does have an upbeat atmosphere with music, lights and decorations. Asked for a to-go box by my waitress and the check and watched as she proceeded to check out several other tables, including those who asked after me. After that she was talking with the hostess and didn't check on me. I wasn't able to flag her down and had to request assistance from another gentleman who was very attentive to his tables. I wouldn't go back, but that's just me.

Yelp
Jassiel was super hospitalble and friendly with my company crew! We came out on a last minute ass work gathering and he was so accommodating and friendly with our tired and overworked ass. Appreciate you buddy! Give him a raise and all the tips!

Yelp
Service was quick n friendly Wide selection for taste in food even had vegan option The place is clean but the smells from the street swifts in from the breeze haha

Yelp
After the LA Pride we all went to eat here. Drinks are on the weak-side for the money. Food was alright but we are going to give this place another try outside of the LA Pride Parade crowd. Service was good considering how busy they were. Ambiance is fun and lively with music. NOTE: During the LA Pride Parade, Mr. Tempo allowed outside people to use their restrooms which is so rare these days. A BIG "appreciation goes out to the entire staff who openly allowed people to come in and use the restrooms. The experience alone is fantastic to see everything on the way to the restrooms with art, colors, neon and fun exciting things to look at. Mr. Tempo is a great experience and fun. Thanks again for their wonderful staff. Check this place out!

Yelp
I went here last night for my partners birthday and brought a couple friends. They were hosting a comedy show and I bought tickets online for $25 each. As soon as we got out of our Lyft there were two people outside who said "free comedy show!" We were like, wait, it's free because I paid $100 for tickets as a gift and the woman quickly changed her tone and said the show is not free and everyone needs to pay to come in. After we were seated she came over again and reassured me that it's not a free show and pretended to look at my tickets. The restaurant was pretty empty at that point and they kept bringing more people in who definitely did not buy tickets. I'm pretty sure we were the only people in there who paid for it and it felt very scammy. I am totally happy to support comedians, but I just really don't like that she lied to me about it. That being said, I don't really think it's the restaurants fault as much as the event hosts. I got the California burrito and it was huge and tasty and came with sweet potato fries. They had $5 margs all night and other good drink deals. Our waitress was also very nice! They brought us a big churro platter with ice cream for our birthday celebration. The design of the restaurant is also very unique - it looks like it might have been a church at some point but now there is neon spray paint all over the walls - very cool!

Yelp
Went here for the first time on Tuesday for happy hour. Drinks were strong and the food was good. We got asada nachos and ceviche. I want to note that it is very hard to find a restaurant that has good ceviche but theirs was pretty good!
google avatar

Yelp
Good service Cold beer Good prices Awesome happy hour The best ambiance Hi fi to Fabian the manager Very attentive dude.. Thanks we appreciate

Austin C.

Yelp
We went here on a date and were super excited. The food was good flavored but when I ordered a wet burrito I made it clear I don't like avocado. The waiter told me that the wet burrito was great and I went with it. The green sauce is avocado based and after literally just saying I didn't want any avocados it seemed like he shoulda said something. Then there is the girlfriends food... Birria Burrito. The birria burrito was pretty good had a off taste maybe cinnamon? Different but not bad! The SB Fries were gross!!! Raw garlic (I like garlic!) and soggy fries. We waited a LONG time for the bill until I eventually just got up to get it. Overall, it seems over priced and service is lacking despite very few patrons being there.

Victor M.

Yelp
Amelia and Ramón were great servers and the ambiance was just amazing for my cousins birthday celebration!! Food was amazing I got the birria chilaquiles and enjoyed every bite!

Maranda R.

Yelp
DONT GO TO EAT HERE. I got the worst food poisoning of my life from the birria tacos but aside from that, the music was so loud we couldn't hear each other, the chips that were with the chips and salsa were stale AND our drinks weren't blended right, we found nothing but gigantic chunks of ice. On top of all of that, the waiter seemed bothered about taking my order and the overall bill wasnt exactly the cheapest. Do yourself a favor and just choose something else.
google avatar

Adriana R.

Yelp
The food was amazing! The birria here is so great! We had Margarita flights, birria tacos, birria dirty fries, tacos, churros, & the butttttter dessert! Everything was AMAZING! The waiter made the whole service even better. VIRI was very attentive and fast, always checking in with us.

Yelp
If you ask for water, they give you bottled water and charge you for it. It should be illegal to purposefully create plastic waste so that you can deceptively charge your customers more. That is heinous. It's 2025, give a shit about the planet. I see you, Jorge, replying back to reviews that are months old saying you'll review this business practice. Get to it. Knock it off. Disgusting.

Yelp
Me and my friend came here for dinner and we had great service . Our server Manuel was great he made sure we had everything we needed and accommodated us when we needed something . We will come back again .

Yelp
I recommend making reservations, as I assume there are long wait times since it's in the middle of Hollywood Blvd. We made reservations for 8:45 and were seated right away. Giovanny was our sever and very attentive. It's a fun and loud atmosphere with great endless options of drinks. The food is great don't get me wrong but just be prepared to pay for overpriced Mexican food. I got the enchiladas and it comes with 3 for $18. Keep in mind dishes do not come with sides. The chips and salsa were $8 and they get stingy with the amount they give you. Also, if you ask for water it's $3. I'm not sure if there was any other option than having to pay for water but this isn't Coachella where we should be be forced to pay for water. Found that part so tacky. It's also a little hard to have a conversation across the table with the person you're with since the tables have these high little table top for the food but it's too high. It's definitely worth checking out 1x for the experience.

Yelp
I finally visited Mr. Tempo Cantina and was very disappointed. I've been to their restaurants in Brea, Downey, Santa Monica, San Diego and Valle de Guadalupe. Let me start with saying that our food was cold. Music was extremely loud (nightclub loud) I was there to enjoy food and drinks and we had to be screaming to be able to have a conversation. Lastly and the worse part was service. The waiter had the audacity to call me "guey" which I did not appreciate. I know to many this is not a big deal but at the end of the day they're supposed to keep a certain level of respect. Will never be back to this establishment.

Jose C.

Yelp
Besty was the best! Very attentive, and made the vibe extra fun! Bring all your friends here for your next special celebration!
