"I am going to ask you a series of questions. This is important, so take your time and think hard before you answer. Do you love ramen? Is Ippudo your favorite place to eat ramen? Do you sometimes wonder what the effects of eating ramen several times a week would have on your well being? If you found yourself responding in the affirmative to any of those three queries, you should plan to pick up the phone at 3pm today and make a reservation for dinner tonight at Mu Ramen. Which probably leads you to some questions for me, like: Really? Another ramen joint? And I have to call at 3pm to get a same-day reservation? Why not just hit up any one of the 30 other ramen restaurants currently in my rotation? Will there be a test? These are all valid concerns, and I can address them all with one simple statement. Mu Ramen is one of the best ramen spots in New York City. We’d actually go as far as to say we like it almost as much as we like Ippudo, and we f*cking love Ippudo. In fact, the Tonkotsu Ramen on Mu’s menu was modeled after Ippudo’s famous Akamaru Modern, and it does a pretty damn good job of emulating that bowl of all bowls. But you shouldn’t come here just for that. If you want a bowl of Akamaru Modern, you know where to get one. You should come to Mu Ramen for everything else, from the excellent vibe in the 22 seat room, to friendly staff, to the incredibly creative and delicious dishes they call “Treats.” The soup is also excellent, and it is actually different than the other stuff out there right now. Mu Ramen takes the fat out of their broth after it cools down and rises to the top. The ramen here is also lighter on the salt, leaving the high-quality ingredients to stand up on their own. We appreciate that concern for our health, but what we appreciate most about Mu Ramen is just that it’s fun and different. The hype surrounding the place might have you believe otherwise, but this is really just a neighborhood restaurant that happens to be so good it’s worth traveling for. The question then becomes, when is the best time to go in hopes of landing a seat? Good question. Food Rundown U & I Sushi rice, spicy tuna, and salmon roe, topped with uni. Do you really need to know anything else about this? Didn’t think so. Okonomiyaki Okonomiyaki, a sweet and savory Japanese pancake, is often a big glob of bacon and spicy mayo and probably some octopus. That’s not a bad thing, but Mu Ramen’s take on the dish is infinitely better. A light pancake is topped with smoked trout, maple syrup, tobiko, and even some tiny flower petals. You want this. Mu Ramen The namesake ramen is a beef-based broth with delicious brisket (or sometimes house made corned beef), half sour pickle, and some cabbage. It’s definitely a Jewish influenced bowl of soup, and it’s definitely very good. Just know that this won’t have that porky flavor of tonkotsu ramen. Tonkotsu Ramen Inspired by Ippudo’s Akamaru Modern and very similar except that it feels a little bit less irresponsible. Thanks to the removal of fat from the broth, this one is lighter and more restrained, but still excellent. A must order. Spicy Miso Ramen Now that we’re making comparisons, this spicy ramen is somewhat similar to the one you’ll find at Ivan Ramen. But again, restraint is the key here. The spiciness is dialed back a bit, just kicking you a bit at the end of each bite. And the broth doesn’t feel so much like bright red sludge. Order with confidence. Tebasaki Gyoza I have no idea how to explain this creation to you other than to say that they stuffed a boneless chicken wing with foie gras and brioche and then fried it. Why? WHO KNOWS. But it’s an interesting and surprisingly good thing. Try it." - Chris Stang

"Mu Ramen is on the same street as The Creek And The Cave, and it’s where we go for really good ramen in LIC. The broth here is on the lighter side, which means that later on you’ll be able to pay attention to the person on stage talking about their daddy issues, rather than your impending urge to lie down. The only catch is that this restaurant is pretty small, so there’s a chance it’ll be busy." - Hannah Albertine

Interesting and delicious appetizers, tasty ramen! It was crowded on a Friday night and we were lucky to be seated without a reservation - I'd make one of those if going on a busy night! One star off for being cash only (there's an ATM inside, so not hugely inconvenient), and having really nothing for a vegetarian to eat, that's a bummer. With a vegetarian partner, I won't be back as often as I'd like!

The decor and ambiance is delightful inside but I’m afraid the place is a bit overpriced for what you get and the main entree is trickily priced in my opinion. The Mu Ramen is $19 which they ran out of and a “substitute” was made for $15 according to the menu but the price ended up being $34 not $15 as suggested by the menu. I though that was a bit tricky. The actual ramen was a bit bland for $34 and it kinda felt like they just threw some noodles in there with hot water and called it a day. The edamame I must say was delicious and very well seasoned. I loved it and it was probably some of the best edamame I’ve ever had. The bottle of sake was $27 but finished rather quickly. I really didn’t think the service was great.. our server didn’t take the time to check up on us even once after our food came out but we still tipped well. All in all just a Subpar experience.. it’s a trendy place and I wish them the best but I probably won’t be dining here again.

Small place but very warm and well-decorated. Worth the wait. The soup of the ramen is just perfect. Even when you finish all the soup, you won’t feel heavy or greasy. The appetizers are very special also.

Went here for wife’s birthday...we had the Tonkotsu Ramen, Spicy Miso Ramen and OKONOMIYAKI appetizer. Ramen was top notch. Just amazing and the portions were very solid. Mu, owner is the place was there managing the joint well. She really made my wife’s birthday w the cake coordination. Never felt rushed and had such great care with Nikki also. Very grateful for the service and even happier with the quality of ramen. Top top notch restaurant. Cash only and there is ATM in the restaurant— so it’s no big deal

We were very lucky to be the first ones in the restaurant... I had made reservations on open table just in case though. Let me tell you... I think this is the best ramen I've had in NYC so far. Even though this is a ramen shop. Many of the dishes have a heavy French influence. For appetizers we had tuna carpaccio, the okonomiyaki, the dry aged Wagyu making hand roll (served raw), and 4 tebasaki gyoza. We had two bowls of the tonkotsu ramen and one of the I'll shoyu ramen. We had nitamago (seasoned egg) for each bowl. I had extra serving of noodles for my bowl. The tuna carpaccio had a nice clean flavor with straight forward taste. The dry aged Wagyu hand roll was good but you are making the rolls yourself. Okonomiyaki was fantastic and highly recommended. The tebasaki gyoza is something else. I loved it. This is not a transitional gyoza... It's a chicken wing that has been mostly deboned inside and the meat stuffed with fois gras. I believe the wing is cooked sous vide style because the chicken meat had a bit of pink. The whole wing is then quickly deep fried for a crispy outer texture. I haven't had a better tonkotsu ramen bowl in the city. Deep flavored porky broth. The pork is ever so tender. The seasoned egg is cooked perfectly with that nice soft liquid yolk. Some may consider the bowl small but with the seasoned egg and extra noodles... It's about $21.50. $17.00 for the tonkotsu, $2 for the egg, and $2.50 for the extra noodles. The shoyu ramen was good although I expected a stronger duck taste. For me the tonkotsu was a much better choice. For some reason, the mu ramen wasn't available. This is a cash only place. ATM is available in the restaurant. Regardless I'll come back here for more.

I'm a big foodie person. I travel all around the world trying restaurants that are recommended. So here are key food and hospitality things about this place. Positives Noodles have good texture Broth is good Pancakes are very good Fried chicken is ok Service well we will get to that. Negatives Way too expensive. Manhattan has better prices and better Ramen at numerous places. Seats are all stools. This should be mixed up. Stools and back rest chairs. The Fried Chicken does not have the strawberry jam anymore. Chicken is not good its just okay. They do not allow modifications. So this is how it works you can add whatever you want to your order but you cannot minus out anything. I asked for no onions and I was told that they can not do that. There are certain medical conditions that people have such as Crohn's disease and certain foods do not sit well with people. This is not the place for that. So no modifications. They do not do take out or delivery. And if you want to have your food to go they give you horrible to go containers without any bags to put them in. The MU Ramen bowl is ok. For beef Ramen the corn beef is way too hard should be tender. Beef broth is very good. Noodles are good too. Chewy noodles. As for the Duck broth it is good. But thats about it. Small menu. Out of everything the pancakes where the best tasting thing that I've tried at Mu Ramen. But I don't think a bill for around $100 justifies pancakes. They can brush up on the hospitality. Service is bad. They won't last at these prices and bad service. Also it's a cash only location with a atm inside. Talk about gotcha. I recommend Minca Ramen, Ivan Ramen or Momofuku noodle bar if you want Ramen. These places have far better Ramen for a better cost for the amount of food you are getting. Also the quality is superb at these locations. Sorry Mu Ramen fortunately you guys are the only Ramen place in the area for the locals. People that travel will benefit from the far superior restaurants. As for me. I don't see myself visiting again.

Cash only. Recommend reservations. People do start lining up 10 to 15 min before opening. Sit at the bar if you want to see the chefs work. I didn't have the ramen so this is an appetizer only review. The uni app was delicious and refreshing. Uni flown in from Hokkaido. Mussels were cooked perfectly with a delicious broth. Didn't care for the bread as it's not the kind to sopp up the broth. The raw/rare steak of sushi rice was really, really good as a self tataki. I didn't love the gyoza. It's good but just not my cup of tea. Its serves or is fried chicken? Weird concept. Wish they had some dessert options. UPDATE: Service felt a bit rushed this time. Had the shoyu ramen and it was winning! Also had a bite of the burger. Delicious and juicy! Really, great flavors. Bathroom is a bit of a mess and we were seated with the first wave so not sure what the problem is.
