Absolutely love this place!! As a Peruvian who has grown up on the most delicious food EVER, I'm always on the hunt for a little taste of Peru. I came here for a late lunch while in Carrollton, ready for some rotisserie chicken. "Pollo a la brasa" is like the Peruvian version of fast food, like our KFC. The chicken cooked this way is super juicy and flavorful, spiced to perfection. The order of chicken usually comes with a set of fries and a salad - which are the combos that Munay offers. So again - I was super stoked.
I came to treat my boyfriend (and myself) to a Peruvian lunch around 2 pm on a Sunday. There was ample parking, and I was pleased to see the simple and warm, colorful decor and several families scattered throughout the restaurant. The staff was super friendly, welcoming, and timely. Prices looked pretty affordable for the amount of food that I saw on the tables, so we ordered a little bit of everything - the whole chicken/fries combo, anticuchos, and a pitcher of fresh-made Chicha Morada (must, MUST get this). Sweets are my kryptonite, so I also preordered some picarones for dessert.
The chicken was so delicious! Super juicy, as expected. Perhaps it was the hunger that makes my memory hazy or perhaps it's that I reverted back to a 4-year-old version of myself, but when I finally looked up from my food, I'd devoured half a chicken, even the white meat - that's right, I said white meat (it's that good) - and the anticuchos came in. I thought about slowing down, but then ravenously consumed those as well. These came with some potatoes, since we Peruvians love our potatoes. In case you haven't tried them before, anitcuchos are beef heart skewers that are marinated in aji panca and other seasonings. They're a staple of Peruvian street food! The ones at Munay taste JUST like the ones I used to buy on the streets of Lima as a child. Don't be shy, try one!
The Chicha Morada was incredible. Definitely not from a bottle, and I ended up taking a jar home because my boyfriend enjoyed it so much! He was amazed when I told him that it was made from purple corn! Just be careful - it'll stain your clothes if you spill. Last but not least - the picarones. Now, beware: these were the reason I was a chubby child. They're a type of doughnut made of squash and sweet potato, and when they're hot, they're the kind of airy and crunchy that you can only dream of. The anise seeds within the doughnut deepened the flavor of the actual dessert, and the fig dipping sauce was perfecccttt.
Basically, I had to be rolled out of this restaurant, and I took my many leftovers with me. Critics (e.g. my Columbian boyfriend) rave, and I even got him to admit that Peruvian food might be better than Columbian food. THIS IS A BIG DEAL, Latinos take a lot of pride in their food!! I still have dreams about this food and will go back whenever I have a chance! Definitely bring an appetite and some hungry friends - they'll thank you!!
