Savor Tokachi, Japan’s Most Bountiful Region

"Producing full-flavored milk starts with quality soil and grass, says Hirotaka Shinmura, the fourth-generation owner of Shinmura Farm. The ranch’s 120 cows, which are mainly Holsteins, are free to roam and graze on the 80-hectare farm that is made up of lush undulating hills." - Kenneth Goh

Went on a quiet weekday morning where we were the only group there. Both adults and kids had an enjoyable and memorable experience at the farm. We got to milk the cow, feed the calves and make butter. Despite missing the designated timing, they were kind to open a separate slot to accommodate my family of 14. The Japanese staff were not able to converse in English, but they used English signboards and hand signals to indicate what they were explaining. They were patient and courteous, even providing umbrellas to shelter us when it stared to drizzle slightly midway. The hand made butter was so soft and delicious, despite it being unsalted. We also sampled both low fat and full cream milk made freshly at the farm. Unfortunately we didn’t manage to buy any farm produce to take-away that day as the staff explained that it was not available for sale.

Very fun for families, especially for the kids! The cow milking and butter making experience was very fun! The host/facilitator also gives everybody bits of knowledge about the farm business and about the animals they take care of. Everybody gets their turn to have their pictures taken and milking the cow, you can pet/feed baby cows while waiting your turn. Note though that each person who are allowed into the cow-milking area are the ones who registered and paid(company who go there just to take pictures aren't allowed to enter) and they're quite strict with this policy. Also it's a farm so expect it to smell like a farm. There are plenty of other activities that can be done here like a tractor tour around the farm, bbq, camping and feeding/petting other farm animals aswell. Food is great too! The freshly made butter was so creamy and silky and the ice cream, milk sold at the cafe was mind-blowing and fresh! Coming here by car is best since the place is a bit far from the nearest train/bus station. Some come here by taxis too, going home wont be a problem since you can call a taxi from the cafe.

Murakami Farm, located approximately an hour drive from Sapporo, is a cute little farm that offers enjoyable farming experiences. We experienced milking the cow, feeding the farm animals, and churning the fresh milk to make butter - ¥2,000 including the entrance fees. There are additional activities you can add, e.g., ice cream making at additional costs. It’s a good family and couple activities spot, located 15-minute drive away from Ecorin Village. The staffs are able to communicate in English and present entertaining workshops. We were pleasantly surprised with the menu from the small cafe. The dishes looked very good and homemade. Be sure to try out the soft serves - they’re definitely a hidden gem and exceeded our expectations. Highly recommended if you’re looking for a farming experience nearby Sapporo. Please extend our regards to Tori-chan if you’re making the trip!

Quite a long drive here to a small farm. We decided not to do the workshop, had an ice cream and left.

We visited this farm in May 2023 and it was an incredible experience! The highlights for us was making our own Hokkaido butter and milking the glorious Hime-chan <3 And of course, trying the delicious ice cream at the on-site shop! I was a little apprehensive when making the reservation as I wasn't sure if they would be able to accommodate English-speaking guests, but that turned out to not be an issue at all. Everything is extremely clear and we even had a lovely member of staff translate/explain everything to us and guide us through the farm, and even the non-English speaking staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming. It was definitely a highlight of our trip to Hokkaido!

Wonderful place for kids. The online booking system was easy and user-friendly. Although their tour is guided in Japanese, hussle-free for english speaking visitors as they would show you a booklet with translation. Wonderful experience. You can also feed the animal at the farm next to restaurant. Wonderful experience for kids.
