"This gallery is fairly isolated among nature and not easy to get to (you'd be better off driving there than catching public transport). The museum describes itself as a place where art and architecture harmonise with natural surroundings, with the slogan 'disconnect to connect'. It houses a range of works including James Turrell light installations. RM was pictured with work by abstract artist Kim Whan Ki."

An absolute masterpiece by Ando Tadao - a great experience to walk through every inch of this space. There are serene areas spread throughout the museum, worthwhile to take a day trip over from Seoul for this experience. The staff are all very knowledgeable when presenting each special exhibition space, such as the location specific James Terrell piece. I do wish that each session is longer (the tours are 30 min each), but given the limit imposed on each group's size, I understand the need for curbing time spent. Regardless, this is an absolute must see museum if you are ever in Korea!

Beautiful museum that's worth the trip from Seoul. If you enjoy architecture and design you will be in happy place. Surrounded by a golf course and beautiful mountain landscapes, the museum blends in with the area taking advantage of the surroundings instead of trying to stand out. You don't need to book ahead but on busy weekends I would recommend it. There is a wonderful cafe that you can sit outside and take in the gorgeous valley below while sipping on a coffee. We timed it just as the leaves were starting to change with the fall colours. I think everyone will take away something a little different from their experience at Museum SAN, the architecture, the scenery, the art or just the peacefulness of the exhibits. Definitely wear comfortable shoes as there is lots of walking involved. It is a bit of a journey from Seoul so make the day of it instead of rushing.

If given unlimited KRW and space, what experience would Japanese Architects come up with ? Tado Ando utilize the landscape well and created immersive experience guiding visitors through the space every step of the way. The Antony Gormley hall has intriguing acoustics, while James Turrell's hipnotic work is mind bending. Unfortunately the location is hard to navigate If you try to take the wonju tour bus (they don't stop at Manjong station anymore but the website still says it does) for foreigners. The museum offers 20% off the ticket if you come by the tour bus which is a nice touch given the jawing expensive, but not overpriced price tag. Still, compare to everything I've seen in Seoul, this is by far the best museum in Korea.

One of the, if not the top museum in South Korea. It occupys an expansive area with the mountains with all round breathtaking views. Admittedly, the architecture by Taodao Ando is so impressive that it over shadows much of its interior displays (the outdoor sculptures, especially the mega sized ones doesn't get shines out). The interior architecture is also really interesting with some special corners which are great for photos. At its back is the stone garden, which is a series of curious humps with meditative spaces below. Near it's entrance building is a paid exhibition (costs extra) in an semi underground building that you descends into that is acoustic when you stand in it. The artworks are sparse as one of the main highlight is the building built semi underground that feels like a bunker. Tip: Two of the best places inside the buildings are the cafe (with an outdoor patio that overlooks the mountain) and a triangle meditative space in the middle of a building that is filled with nothingness but rocks and raw cement wall, hence great for some mediation.

Absolutely stunning and worth a trip museum! Do yourself a favour and go for the signature ticket. It costs around 69000 won, pretty much, but it covers the entire complex, lets you visit the fabulous art works of James Turrell, Tadao Ando, others and includes a meditation session. We finished the visit with the signing bowl meditation and left the museum with a beautiful feeling. The only downside is the loud and disrespectful behaviour of some customers, but it seems that it’s limited to only these areas where you’re allowed to take photos (it’s pretty sad that so many people seem to visit the art galleries only for a few snaps and a cute cafe). There’s so much more beyond it in this museum!

What an amazing museum and experience. It’s a lovely place designed by an amazing architect, and the artwork is also special. I took part in a tour which I highly recommend doing in order to get an in depth explanation of the design.
